1. Allah has watered with unbelief the resting place of the Ibadi,
Who diffused camphor of eternity flowing freely.

2. The soil of Burdain smells sweet because of his perfume's breath,
As if the soil of Burdain was touched by the bracelets.

3. O you who were wrapped in a scabbard of steel plates and silk,
Which contained the sword, polished and Yemeni.

4. And we took refuge during tribulations in his absence,
Yet he was not frightened, nor were we frightened.

5. Whenever truth shakes, he protects its borders,
While the falsehood of the people withdraws, defeated.

6. A hand of death grasped him, not status protecting him
When it seized one day, nor wealth ransoming him.

7. Youths attain the prime of life through his company
And the dried, old wood comes alive in old age through him

8. And some deaths bring down honey in the earth
While mountains, the firm ones, crash into the soil.

9. They say I'm mourning the departed, so woe to them!
Did I hope to gain rewards from the departed?

10. They resented out of envy that I take the living as
An example for them and a model that may find an emulator.

11. So when I mourned the dead, fulfilling their rights,
I found envious people resenting the remnants and blaming me.

12. If you have not kept your covenant with one deceased,
Then you are not, for the living, a keeper and watcher of the covenant.

13. So let not death wrap up your pact made with a brother
And give him away through a valley other than yours, far away.

14. He stayed in a land where you will meet him in it
Even if you and he are far apart in the meeting.

15. I mourned a life virtuously with praise appropriate for it
And kept a pact with glories fitting for it.

16. And I consoled a house whose sky
Were chiefs, moons, and flowing rivers.

17. To Allah, Ismail, and descend in a plain
Shaded by dew all around and brooks.

18. You see great mercy behind its sky
Devotion rolls up in its captivity and disobedience.

19. In the presence of a King who does not prevent shade for a resorter
Nor pardon for a repentant nor amnesty for a hopeful.

20. And I swear you were a man who did not forget his religion
Nor was he distracted from it by the world and its vanity.

21. And you were, whenever needs were hard to fulfil,
A judge for the needy orphans and widows.

22. And you used to pray in congregation with kings
And you used to stand alone worshipping at night.

23. Whoever is given access through the glory of kings
Will not do good deeds unless he is given a lot.

24. And you were bold in blaming at every stance
Where truth was being twisted and found no protector.

25. I examined the morals of men but did not find—
Even if morals are majestic—any second to determination.

26. From determination what revives many glories
And presented the camphor of the eunuch Tawashi.

27. And he did not bring down, praising the Master of Odes,
The rank of poetry, outraging and mocking it.

28. Eloquence is not abuse if you are angry
Nor is it the falsity of praise if you are content.

29. But it is the generous guidance of Allah and His revelation
You carried the lantern among people, guiding.

30. It overflows upon the living with light and at times
Illuminates the roaming skulls of the dead.

31. The bodies perish while rhetoric is immortalized
Beware, that the emancipation of wine makes one forget the cups.

32. You have gone, Abu Abdul Hameed, exonerated
From blame, commended in all respects, pure.

33. Few equals in an era that sees sins as grandeur
And people who fabricate grandeur.

34. We wrapped you up like one wrapped by his scabbard
But you did not rest until we sent you off to what passed.

35. So you were to mouths a summarized story
And you were, to ears, a heightened discourse.

36. And you missed who brought you close in the kingdom for a period
So it was wondrous that people saw a fulfiller.

37. They stirred over the traces of your death a commotion
And provoked for us the memory and returned the nights.

38. Whoever preceded history is not safe from passion
Surfacing, nor from resentment of a critic.

39. When the living write the history of their generation
You recognize the sincere ones among them and the hypocrites.

40. When the constitution is unharmed, the departed one declines
And declines whatever events were upcoming.

41. Beware, every sin to the nights, for its sake,
We have overlooked, pardoned, and forgotten.
