1. The tribe's chieftain passed away, and the people grieved for him
Thus every wise man has a funeral in his heart

2. Tomorrow, and tomorrow we shall meet, while life embraces us
And we wandered, and how many dead will not rise

3. Did the righteous speak their sorrows in the night?
And in the morning find joy and contentment

4. Know that the life is but a day and a night
That reveal what is hidden and concealed

5. Never in this existence did people learn a lesson
When the weeping laughs, the smiling cries

6. Oh Abu Yusuf, in every club there is lamentation
Widows crying, families slapping their faces

7. The place of kindness and generosity has changed
And gratitude and knowledge have lost their teacher

8. If man dies, he is bound to die
But people's sadness for the free is painful

9. No one lives unknown in obscurity
And no one dies with raised minaret in glory

10. Wealth is but sorrow upon sorrow
When fate gives man the destined bitter cup

11. In his life the youth works not for what he desires
And after him, he leaves no good deeds

12. What people had, people's tongues tell the tale
And what was God's, God grants the reward

13. Leader of the Egyptians, death has folded its tent
Has any of you replaced Hatim?

14. Take the good from him and act as he did
For in both abodes, good is beauty and profit

15. Has not the death of your lifeless counsel
Shaken the sides of Egypt and the people's sleep?

16. Is not your shepherd a bier containing that wealthy man
With no money or coins inside?

17. Oh Ahmad of virtues, I have improvised this
With my tears flowing at your bier

18. I wept for the honorable, brave man and his loss
And what power have I but crying and condolence?

19. Poetry is but the echo of emotion and thought
He whose conscience betrays his mind, his mouth also betrays

20. So take this elegy from a loyal grieved one
Whose heart dictates it to you

21. Great were the hopes placed upon you
And does God not fulfill hopes?

22. Your son is none but goodness from the loins of goodness
Why should not hope be expected of him?

23. Your memory shall rise above Ma'n and Hatim
Noble hands upon these people and blessings
