1. One day in the spring of March so sweet
We lost him before he reached his youth
١. ويوم من صَبا آذار حلوٍ
فقدناه وما بلغ الشبابا
2. He imagined the beauty of Niroz's adornments
And gathered their decorations in awe
٢. تَصَوَّر من حلى النيروز وجها
وَجمَّع من زخارفه إهابا
3. His morning departed healthy and delighted
And the edges of his days were pleasant
٣. فَرَاق صباحه صحوا وزهوا
ولذَّ ضحاه حاشية وطابا
4. Jewels were scattered in the valley and he was true
To the horizons where the hills were strung
٤. تناثر في البطاح حلى وأوفى
على الآفاق فانتظم الهضابا
5. His sun flowed in the sea as clear
As emerald when it melted
٥. وسالت شمسه في البحر تبرا
على مثل الزمرد حين ذابا
6. As if his breeze was the breath of virgins
Who tasted honey or sipped the hidden sips
٦. كأن نسيمه نفَس العذارى
طعمن الشهد أو ذقن الخبايا
7. Ibn Abbad wished for him in the mornings
When he stirred the flowers and drinks
٧. تمناه ابن عباد صبوحا
إذا حث المزاهر والشرابا
8. I did not intend he would become an evening
And resurrection was not a reckoning for me
٨. وما قدَّرت أن سيجنّ ظهرا
ولم تكن القيامة لي حسابا
9. Disheveled, dusty, his face darkened
And his sword dripping, unsheathed
٩. تشعَّث لِمة واغبر وجها
ودلَّى مِشفرا وأفترنابا
10. He changed that handsome form to ugliness
And types of bliss with it to torture
١٠. وبدَّل حسن ذاك السمت قبحا
وأصناف النعيم به عذابا
11. The sea roared as if Moses came
With his staff or the pharaoh brought his ships
١١. وضج البحر حتى خِيل موسى
أتى بعصاه أو فرعون آبا
12. Lightning flashed in the clouds as if an army
Of the peninsula marched with their tents
١٢. وأبرق في العباب كأن سرا
بأسطول الجزيرة قد أهابا
13. As if its rays amidst the snow were fire
And horsemen around struck their shelters
١٣. كأن شعاعها في الثلج نار
لفارس حولها ضربوا القبابا
14. Or the beautiful bride on her wedding day
Who tore her veils and face covers
١٤. أو الحسناء يوم العرس جنَّت
فمزقتِ الغلائل والنقابا
15. So whoever charmed the sky and rained on us
Pearls and gold poured down
١٥. فمن سَحَر السماء فأمطرتنا
فكان الدر والذهب الذهابا
16. The eye delights in his pure state
As the parchment was nurtured by ashes
١٦. تروق العين من بيضاء حال
كما تَرَّبتَ بالتِبر الكتابا
17. With the cotton it obtained, the spindle was blessed
And did not cease twisting and pulling
١٧. منادف عسجد ظفرت بقطن
فما تألوه ندفا وانتهابا
18. They cut through the snows to every meadow
And every lover's clothes there
١٨. وقطَّعن الثلوج لكل روض
وكل خميلة منها ثيابا
19. So whoever fashioned the furs
And the young lads robed in burdens
١٩. فمن صور مجللة فِراء
ووِلدان مسربلة جبايا
