بقلب الشجى نار الغرام تلهبت
With the heart burning in grief, the fire of love ignited
إن شيخي قد حاز حسن فعال
My elder has attained excellence in deeds
لي دعوى على الحبيب بأني
I have a claim against the beloved that
أشد على الصب سهم الملام
The shafts of blame sting sharper than spears or swords
لم يخل قوم من وجيه له
No nation lacks a paragon
على خده الخيلان منها ثلاثة
On his cheek three moles
وذي بهاء به أذني لقد سمعت

قد جيء لي من نعال الحب يا حزني
The sandals of love have brought me, O my grief,
وغزال صادني وهو نافر
A gazelle approached while still shy
بروحي جميل لا يحاكى جماله
My spirit has a beauty that cannot be matched
يا حبذا الخال يبدو وسط وجنته
O how fine the uncle appears amidst his cheek
بروحي وجهه للحسن يحوي
With my soul his face contains beauty
عشقت غزالا يحب النفار
I fell for a gazelle who loves to run away
قيل لي ظبي الفيافي حسن
They said a gazelle's beauty was superb
أنا حبر الهوى حبيبين أهوى
I am the ink of passion, loving two sweethearts
أتتك على المجد بنت سعيدة
A girl of good fortune came to you
أفدي الغزال الذي في طرفه دعج

أبو الخيرات شيد سلسبيلا

سوء الظنون يقلل الإخوانا

طروب طلاه الحب والوجد قرقفه

على ورد خديه ونرجس لحظه

ها أحمد الاسم عاداني ومشيختي

لك البشر عمّ منك الفضائل
You are the epitome of all virtues
خلد الله عدل هذا الزمان
May God make eternal the justice of this time,
ألا اثن على أهل المكارم والفخر
Extol the people of virtues and pride
قد زان جيد الروض ثغر الأنهر
The cheeks of the garden's branches are adorned
أجود الناس منفق كل شيء
The most generous of men spends everything
باكر شرابك أحلى الشرب باكره
Drink your wine early, for the early drink is sweetest.
أعيس الحجاز حملت امكراما
The carrier camels of Hejaz bore honors,
قدوم به الأفراح تحلو وتعذب
An arrival in which joys come sweet and tormenting,
بربة الخال والخلخال والحلل
With the mole and the anklet and the ornaments
يا من إذا عقد الهجران ما حلا
Oh Lord to whom, when the bonds of estrangement bind us fast
قم ساهر الليل بين البدر والزهر

الفخر يرقص كالمسرور والطرب

يا أيها الشهم الولي النعم

I am a youth whom desire has made drunk,

في خده الورد مع آس العذار لقد

إن الكرام وأهل المجد قد ذهبوا
The generous souls and people of glory are all gone
جدت يا بحر بالدواءة فضلا
Oh generous sea, your kindness overflows
تهلل الكون ووجه الزمان
The universe rejoiced and time's face shone bright,
زاحم بمنكبك الثريا واجهد
Crowd with your shoulder the Pleiades and strive,
بضوء البدر قد أبصرت ظبيا
By the light of the moon I saw a gazelle
وليس اختلاس المرء شعرا بشعره

إن عذالي أخبروني فقالوا
My censors told me they said:
كنزت دماء القلب في القلب حافظا
I treasured the heart's blood in the heart, preserving it
بكيت دما من فرط هجران فاتني
I wept blood from the intensity of my beloved's abandonment
بي شفتاها فوق ثغر بدا
Her lips above a mouth appeared
يا طيب هذا الحوض في نفحاته
O goodness, this basin in its exhalations
وددت سقام جسمي في غرامي
I wished my body sick in my passion
وقائلة مات الكرام فمن لنا
And saying, the generous died, so who do we have
زارت بليل شديد الغيم مظلمه
She visited in a night of heavy clouded darkness,
عبدك يا ليث الشرى شوقه
Your servant, o lion of valor, his longing
تحجب عن عيني فزاد بي الجوى
He hid from my eyes, so my passion grew
وعانقتها فاهتز قدي بميسها
I embraced her and my shoulders shook from her playfulness
صاح من للحديث والآثار
O you who are knowledgeable of hadith and stories
وشادن زارني والليل في غسق
The nightly shadows wept for me when light
إن الكريم إذا مدحت خصاله
When you praise the noble one's virtues
الفقر خير من الشح المضر به
Poverty is better than harmful stinginess
أنا عبد لكم في كل وقت
I am your servant at all times
يا يوسف الحسن في عشقك شغفني الحب
O Yusuf, your beauty made me crazed with love
وساق هو الشمس المضيئة في الضحى
And legs, he is the shining sun at dawn
بشراك نجل أتى
Good tidings, a son is born
وكل بني الصواف لا شك كامل
All the sons of Sawwaf are no doubt perfect,
يا دار زينب بالعقيق تبسمي
O home of Zainab with red carnelians, smile
يا باردا أفرطت فيه برودته
Oh cold one, excessive is your frigidity
يا حسن ذا سلسبيل زها
O beauty with soft flowing hair
اخضر شاربه وريقته غدت
Its drinker's mouth and saliva turned green,
أيا سائلي عمن مدحت فإنه
O asker of whom I praised, he is
علي النفس رفقا ثم رفقا
Be gentle with yourself, then gentle again
أحبة قلبي قد قطعتم رسائلا
My beloveds, you have cut off connections
قوس السماء به السحاب مطوق
The sky's arc is ringed with clouds
ويا زهرة من نرجس شمتها زهت
And O narcissus flower I smelled its fragrance
ووردي خد نرجسي لواحظ
With his narcissus-hued cheek and roseate complexion
وبي وجهه قد صفا حسنه
His face shone bright with beauty
لما هويت لكي أقبله سطا
When I leaned down to kiss it chastely
بروحي الخال في ياقوت وجنته
With my spirit the mole on his cheek of ruby and garden
لا تعتبوا قط شخصا بات مستحيا
Never blame someone who has become bashful
وأشجار آس بدا حبها
The trees of Unayzah began to love,
ظلموه في تشبيههم شمس الضحى
They wronged him by comparing his fair cheeks
نزه الطرف عند مقعد صدق
Brighten the gaze in the abode of truthfulness
خير الأمور إذا حققت أوسطها
The best of matters is the middle course
الجهل عذر وليس العلم معذرة
Ignorance is an excuse, but knowledge is no justification
قد ظن أن علو الدار فيه له
He thought the height of his abode gave him dignity,
إن التغابي في اللبيب فطانة
Ingenuity in the sensible is wisdom
أنا المحتاج للغفران دوما
I am always in need of forgiveness,
عامنا قد أتى بكل سرور
Our year has brought all happiness
روحي الفداء لخده القاني الذي
My soul is ransom for his supple cheek
بيروتنا مقبرة
Beirut, grave of
وشرفني من المولى كتاب
The Master honored me with a book
أهنيك يا ابن الكرام بعرس
I congratulate you, son of honor, on a wedding
أتيت إلى الندب الرشيدي راجيا
I came to the wise lament seeking
أسبل الروض برقع التوريد
The garden shed its green attire
أنا الفتح فتح الله لي نسبة علت
I am Al-Fath, Allah’s opening bestowed upon me
أرى الفحم في الكانون ذا لهب غدا
I see embers in the hearth glowing with flames
لقد أطلتم جفاكم
You've been cruel in your long estrangement
لنا معشر الإسلام أشرف سؤدد
We have the finest honor among all religions
إذا نصحت امرأ فاحرص على حسن
If you advise a man be careful of decorum
وقائلة ما بال دمعك أحمر
And she asks, "Why are your tears crimson red?
بنيت سليمان الزمان أخا الندى
You built Solomon the era, brother of dew
الشريف الشباك حاوي المعالي
The noble youth, repository of virtues,
إن تصر سيدا وجيه أناس
If you seek to be a leader of repute among people,
أهديتني منك شاشا
You have gifted me a joy
تنفست إذ قبلت وجنة فاتني
When I kissed the cheek of a charming lady
أرى قرب إقبال الحبيب لمغرم
I see my beloved drawing near a lovesick one
بدر المعالي في دمشق شارق
The full moon of glories shining in Damascus
الشام دار مشرقه
Sham is a bright abode
لا تغترر بالذي أوليت من منن
Do not be deceived by the favors you have been granted
فإن كنت تأتي بالذي قد أريده
If you bring what I desire
لا يأكل اللحم بغضا من حماقته
He does not eat meat out of foolishness
الحكم لله العلي الكبير
The judgment is for Allah, the Most High, the Greatest
دمشق لك البشرى بعود المحاسني
Damascus, good tidings to you of the return of virtues
أمولاي بحر العلم من غير ساحل
My wealth, an ocean of knowledge without shores
إن المعالي لا حرمت حلولها
The heights were not denied your blessed arrival
يا حسن أيامنا البيض التي سلفت
Oh beauty of our white days now past
قد نام منبطحا ورافع رأسه
Lying prone, his head held high,
لا غصن قد يبدو لقدك مشبها
No branch may seem to your stature resembling,
قالت لدى نقل السوار لخصرها
When she moved the bracelet to her wrist,
أنا الكئيب الذي ليلا يراعي النجم
I am the melancholic one who at night tends the star,
جزيت علي بن أسعد خيرا
Ali ibn Asaad, you have been rewarded with good
محياه شمس الحسن أضحى منازلا
Where the wandering eyes once traveled
أيا قبحه في الناس من رجل غدا
How ugly among the people is a man who tomorrow
ولئن ذهبت لمشرق من مغرب
Though I depart for some far eastern land
أبشر محمد والبشرى لمن منح
Rejoice, O Muhammad, and glad tidings to the one who bestows favors,
سليمان الزمان بنيت حوضا
O Suleiman, you built a fountain in your time
وإني ضنين بالذي قد هويته
I am so jealous of the one I love
أي صبر لمغرم معروف
What patience for a lover well-known
عذولي قد قال لا عرق يبدو
My friend said there's no sweat that shows
أبد الله حسن هذا الزمان
God made this era beautiful
الورد قد قال إذ قمنا نقطره
The rose said, as we plucked it:
بكف حبيبي وردتان تبدتا
In my beloved's hand were two roses
وشاد رخيم الصوت كالبدر وجهه
With a melodious voice like the full moon is his face
تغنى على المزمار فاستلب الحجى
He played the flute and stole the heart
شكا الحب من بعض أسنانه
Love complained of some of its teeth
أوجه يا محمود نحوك مقصدي
Toward you, O Mahmoud, I direct my purpose
ألحظ ما تكحل أم حسام
Is it a glance that has been darkened with kohl, or a sword?
لئن ذم حسادي كرام طبائعي
If my envious detractors blame my noble nature,
روض الشقائق بالشقائق مزده
The meadow of anemones with anemones adorned
مشوق كساه البين ثم التباعد
Separation clad me in the garments of emaciation, then estrangement,
أكرم بعثمان والأنوار ساطعة
Honour Othman while the lights shine bright
قد طال عمر عذولي
Long has been the life of the wretched one
وليل به زارني والنجوم
And a night it was when you visited me, and the stars
إن السماء بدت تشتد زرقتها
The sky appears to intensify its blueness
غنى على القانون إذ رصد الصبا
Singing of law when north wind blew
بدا البدر في الظلماء والحب زائري
The moon rose in the darkness, and you, my love, came to visit me.
إن ذا الحوض محكم ببناء
Indeed this basin is firmly constructed
أليس عيش الزهد عيشا هني
Is not the life of asceticism a happy life
سليمان شمس الوزارة فردا
Solomon, the sun of ministry, unique
بي عذار الحب قد بان لنا
My love's excuse has been revealed to us
لك الله ما هذا التواني بلا جد
By God! Why this procrastination without effort
الشيب شمس بيضت بشعاعها
The gray hair is a sun whose rays have whitened
أرخت ذوائبها تموج وراءها
She let down her tresses, they wave behind,
إذا بدا قوس السما في
When the rainbow appears in the sky
طلع العذار بوجهه
The full moon rose with its face,
أكرمت عاذلتي وإن تك في الهوى
I honored my reproacher, though she be
مر الشباب وهو عذب وحال
Youth passed, and it was pleasurable and fine
يا أظرف الناس شكلا
O most graceful in appearance
سقتني سلافا من مدامة ثغرها
She gave me a draught from the wine of her mouth
يا رحمة الله سحي
O Mercy of Allah, spread
لقد ذاق قلبي في الهوى طعم حبها
My heart has truly tasted the flavor of her love,
عذاره الآسي في خده
His alluring beauty in his cheek
عليك عبدك غزالي قد غدا كلا
Upon you, my servant Ghazali has become altogether worn down
لماه لظى الأحشاء لا شك مطفئ
When his fervor inflamed my inmost being, no doubt
صليني سواد العين يا مهجة الصب
The darkness of my eyes longs for you, O tormentress of passion!
ابنة الحسن بها الحسن سما
The beauty's daughter, in whom beauty thrives
قد قمت لله لا تبقي على المهج
You stood up for Allah, leaving no tyrants
جسمي غدا باليا مثل الردى خلقا
My body has become tired like ruins in creation
مذ ذقت صهباء الهوى
Since I tasted the wine of love
عقلي به لعب العذار الآسي
My mind was toyed with by hopeless love
وعقاب جور كاسر يسطو على
The unjust falcon's claw preys
بدا عند صدغيه لطيف عذاره
The charming blush upon his cheek revealed itself
اترك غمومك فالحياة غرور
Leave your worries, for life is but illusion
أنت غصن ولم يملك كلامي
You are a branch and my speech does not have power over you
ما أعدل الأفلاك في دورانها
How just are the orbits in their rotation!
نظرت إليها فاستحلت بنظرة
I looked at her, so she was made lawful with a glance,
ما لاح بريق من العذيب على البان
No glimmer shone from pure wine on the goblet
الحمد لله مولي الخير والنعم
Praise be to Allah, Lord of bounty and favors
محاسن حبي من رآها اهتوى بها
The beauties of my love, he who sees them falls in love
يا حسن روض غدا يهديك نرجسه
O beauty of a garden, tomorrow it will offer you its narcissus
وما الخال إلا البدر في صحن خدها
The mole on her cheek is but the full moon in the hollow of her face
وأهلا خليل الفضل والمجد والعلى
Welcome, O friend of merit, glory and nobility
يا ليت حبي لا يدريه من أحد
Oh, how I wish none knew of my love
قد مر بي وأنا المولع حبه
He passed me by while I was so enamored of his love
يا شرف الورد ويا فخره
Oh you rose's noble one, pride of all,
جميل تود الشمس مثل جماله
Beautiful as the sun, his grace
عجبا لأهيف لا عدمت وصاله
How strange is the one I never cease to love
بشراك طير الهنا من فوق أغصان
Your bird of bliss sings joyously above the branches
كن يا ابن ودي صموتا
Be silent, my dear son,
ذا ضريح يسقيه غيث حنان
A shrine watered by the rain of tenderness,
وظالم جائر بالجور يظلمنا
By an unjust oppressor who wrongs us
فما بال الوشاة لقد لحوني
So why do the fault finders blame me
يا من بكل حميد من خصائله
Oh one through whom all praiseworthy traits make
سرقت عيني لما أن بدا
When his cheek appeared in view
هذا الضريح لمصطفى العلياء من
This tomb belongs to Mustafa the Sublime one
ورب جدار قد بناه أميرنا
Many a wall was built by our Prince
بروحي أنف بين خديه فاصل
With my soul, a nose between its cheeks a separator
على خصره والردف قد ماج شعره
His long hair falling on his waist,
يا حسن عين من زلال ماؤها
O beauty of an eye whose water is pure
لصبك في العشق حال غريب
Your passion has a strange state,
قد ضاع عمري في الهوى وصبابتي
My life was wasted in love and my youth
قلت بيني وبينه
Between us something of his servant has vanished
وطائية غازلتها بتلطف
A gentle soul she was when I began to woo her
غزال تقي وضوء الجمال
A graceful gazelle of beauty's purity
إن شمي لمسك خال حبيبي
The scent of musk on my beloved's cheek
يا قاري العلم أضحى
O reader of knowledge, it is morning
سواد عيون العاشقين عذاره
The blackness of lovers' eyes is their excuse
تصارع القوم بقرب دارها
The people fought near her abode
مال عني إلى الجفاء حبيبي
My beloved has turned away from me to harshness
على وجهه سار نمل العذار
On his face went the procession of excuses
تناحل جسمي بالهوى وقد اختفى
My body melted away in passionate love and disappeared
بالروح وجنة الحبيب التي
With spirit and garden of the beloved which
لا تعترضني بالذي
Do not oppose what I intend
قد زارني الحب في تموز يا فرحي
Love visited me in July, O my joy
وسائل يسألني
Questions ask of me,
كسب السيادة بالمروءة والتقى
He gained supremacy through virtue and piety
محياه روض من الحسن زاه
A garden it is, from beauty overflowing,
يوم النوى شر يوم
The day of parting is an evil day
تطفلت مذ كنت للحسن جنة
I have been longing for you since you were a garden of beauty
بدا في خده مسك العذار
Musk began to show on his cheek,
وإن اقتران الجنس في غير جنسه
For the joining of unlike kinds is painful doom
وبي لحظه الوسنان أبرع ساحر
His glance, so alluring, is a master sorcerer
مذ قابل البدر وجه الحب بينهما
Ever since the full moon met the face of love between them
يا در ثغر الحب ته متلامعا
O ruby of love's lips, shining brightly
للكريم ابن الأسعد الشهم صيت
For the generous son of As'ad the valiant is a far-reaching fame
أثنى سواك الحبيب ممتدحا
My friend praised someone else besides you,
هذا كتابك مثل المسك في الورق
This book of yours is like musk in the pages,
من ذا رأى الياقوت من مبسمه
Who has seen carnelian from its smile,
روحي الفداء لخال تحت مقلته
My soul is a ransom for a mole under his eye
رأس سواك الحب صار جوهرا
The head of your toothbrush has become a gem
عذار حبي أرى من حسنه
The torment of my love, I see from his beauty
الظرف فيك كثير
There's much good in you
ما أحسن السودان وما أسناهم
How beautiful are the black people, and how good they are!
استاك بالمسواك رب البها
The lips sipped rosedew from the brushwood-twigs,
لم اسودت الدنيا ولم يك غاسق
Why has the world turned dark without any darkness?
ولقد ذكرتك والصوارم قطعت
I remembered you as the swords were slashing
ولست بمن قد كان للراح شاربا
I am not one who was a drinker of spirits
يا رب شخص جاء يمضغ أكله
O Lord, someone came chewing his food
ومهفهف سحر العقول قوامه
Softly enchanting is his face's grace
هذا زمان سيئ
This is an evil time
أهديتني منك صابونا غسلت به
You gave me soap from you with which I washed
هذا ضريح العالم
This is the tomb of the scholar Nizami
يا ربما فرس إن رمت أمدحه
O Lord, perhaps a horse, if I praise it
بدا العذار وإن الحسن يشمله
The excuse has become apparent, and indeed beauty encompasses it
يطالع في لوح الجمال محاسنا
He gazes on the tablet of beauty at charms
أفدي غزالا قد بدا مسكه
I ransom a gazelle whose musk has appeared
نجوم السماء عيون تفيض
The stars are eyes overflowing
لقد تعشقته أذنا ولم أره
I fell in love with him through hearing, without seeing
الأديب القطان صنو كمال
The writer Al-Qattan is the epitome of perfection
إن غبت عني أو حضرت فإنني
Whether you are absent from me or present, I indeed
يحيى حفيد علوم
Yaḥyá the grandson of knowledge
بروحي عينه الوطفاء ترنو
With my soul his gentle eyes yearn
قف على ذا الضريح ثم ترحم
Stand by this tomb and offer a prayer,
دار العذار بوجهه فكأنه
The face of the one who denied passion is like
خط الجمال على مياه خدوده
The camels traced upon the water of his cheeks
يا حبذا الآس يزهو في الرياض وقد
Oh beloved, how the myrtle blossoms in the gardens
قد أسفر البدر الظريف
The bright full moon has risen
عليك بما به الشعراء ترضى
Follow what pleases poets,
بي محياه والعذار عليه
With life on his cheek, doubt questioning still,
عاذلي لما رآني عاشقا
When my censor saw me in love
ولما تركت الياس في صحبة الورى
And when I left Elias in the company of mortals
في ذا الزمان من الخلان أصدقهم
In this age of insincere friends, the truest of them all
ماء سماء الخد لما حلا
The cheek's sky water when it descended
نحن قوم تصيدنا الأعين السود
We are a people whose eyes hunt the black
أنا صب قد جفاني
I am a youth who has dried up,
تركت أهل زماني دون تجربة
I left the people of my time without trying,
لقد ولى الشباب فلهف قلبي
Youth has passed and my heart burns with longing
أكلت أكلا وافرا
I ate bountifully
فوبدر غرته وشمس جبينه
By the full moon of his cheek and the sun on his brow
أيا رب حسن التخلص مما
O Lord, grant me the beauty of deliverance
إذا وعدت فبادر بالوفاء ولا
When you make a promise, fulfill it without delay
إن سدت قومك فانفع
If you prevent your people, then benefit
روينا مزاياك نقلا وسمعا
We heard of your virtues, told and heard,
أيا حبذا المنثور في الروض والربى
O scattered in the garden and pasture
وروض به الأزهار بين منظم
With it the flowers tidy up their beds
جفاني حبيبي فالغرام به نما
My beloved abandoned me, yet love for him grew
قيل لي تب من غرام
They said repent from loving,
بشراك أفصح غاية الإفصاح
Your good news is the most eloquent utterance,
بي خال بخده قد تبدى
With his cheek revealed he drew near,
نسيم الصبا مرت بأذيال فاتني
The breeze of morning passed by the train of a beauty
لعمرك ما القامات إلا أسنة
Your life, the tears are but rain drops
وما شربه للتبغ إلا لحكمة
And his drinking of tobacco is but for wisdom
لقد أطلقت كفا وقد خضبت كفا
She freed a hand though it was stained with henna
فه بالمراد عن الغرام وأعرب
Speak openly of passion, explain it,
وروض أرانا حسان الزهور
A garden showed us flowers of all kinds
قد طاب ماء الحياة في فمه
The water of life is sweet in his mouth,
أقبلت بالجمال ذات البهاء
She came with beauty, the radiant one,
فؤاد المعنى بالتباعد متلف
The heart of meaning is refined through separation
ألا يا أجل الرسل والأنبياء
O the most eminent of messengers and prophets
أحيا العديم سخاؤه
His generosity enlivens the destitute
سقاها بلا ضر بغيث هطول
My beloved's abode was watered without harm by pouring rain,
وعانقته مثل المسلم قائما
I embraced him like a Muslim standing
حلو الشمائل ذو المحاسن وجهه
Sweet of countenance, he of perfect qualities
بأبي ثغره تحالي لماه
By my father's smiling mouth, when he smiles
بدر حسن في كفه شمت مسكا
The full moon of beauty held musk in its palm,
تبدى العذار فقال الحبيب
The charm appeared and the lover said
من أَولياء إلهِنا العلما
Among the saints of our God are scholars,
أنا أهوى قهوة
I love coffee
قالوا علمت بحمى الحب قلت لهم
They said, "You are feverish with love," I said to them,
أعني الكرى منعته النجوم
The stars denied my lover to me
إخش النميمة واتئد
Avoid gossip and abstain
أرى هذه الدنيا من الإنس ما بها
I see in this world of people naught
أراها كقرص الشمس قد طلعت لنا
I see it like the sun disk that rose for us
وتخت على نهر لقد رق ماؤه
A bed upon a river whose waters have run dry
هلم لشرب خمر ذات سكر
Come drink some intoxicating wine
ويوم رأيت السحب فيه تراكمت
The day I saw the clouds accumulating
لما أسال دمي بصارم لحظه
When my blood was shed by the keenness of his glance,
بصارم لحظيه يصول على الورى
With his piercing eyes he charges at the land
سرى برق الحما فأضاء نورا
The dawn lightening flashed and illuminated light
من قاسه بالبدر أخطأ فكره
He who compares it to the full moon is mistaken
شمس الكمال كسا بيروتنا حللا
The sun of perfection adorned our Beirut
بلبل الدوح عليه صدحا
The nightingale warbled upon the branches
يا حسن نارنجة قد زانها ثمر
O beauty of an orange tree adorned with fruit
جفاه أذاب قلبي
His indifference melted my heart,
رجل السوء لا اعتلاه سرور
The evil man is not made happy
رجل الخير لا أصيب بسوء
A good man is not struck by harm
هذي الربوع وما بها من منزل
These gardens and the dwellings in them
سلوا الأسود الضواري إذ تعاديه
Ask the fierce lions when they are opposed in war,
وإني قد رضيت به حبيبا
I have loved him and chosen him as a friend
استر عيوبك إن الناس تبصرها
Hide your flaws, for people see them
ضيعت حقك في لفظ أتيت به
You have lost your right in an utterance you have made
صدق إذا حدثت من ثقة
Believe if told by one you trust
للسحر تأثير أضر ذوي الحجا
The charm of looks has baneful power on me;
ذا أدهم الليل ولى هارب الغسق
When the dark night departed fleeing the twilight,
إن محسوبك الذي بك يسمو
He who is exalted due to his tie with you
لا ذنب للناقل الراوي لكم خبرا
The messenger bears no blame for the news he relates,
ما بين منكسر الأجفان والدعج
Between the drooping eyelids and the sleepy fog,
لقد بدا ينثني في أخضر الحلل
He seemed to bend as branches in verdant adornment
ولا يفتخر من قد خلا من مكارم
Let no man glory in virtues that are not his own,
ومدع للفهم من فهمه
And one who pretends to understand from his understanding
ترجو الفرار من الهموم ولم يكن
You wish to flee from worries, but there is not
إذا سئلت فلا تترك مراجعة
When questioned, do not neglect to review,
ما كان رأي محب فيك ذا خطأ
The opinion of a lover about you, if wrong,
سلام يفوق الروض فيه الأزاهر
Peace that surpasses the garden, wherein flowers blossom,
تبسم زهر الروض حين بكى الطل
The garden's flower smiled when the youth wept,
ولبسنا الهوى دروعا ولاما
We donned passion as armor and abandon,
ولئن عزمت على الذهاب لبلدة
And if you're determined to go to a town
هلا من الساحل البحري أنباء
News from the seashore may reach
ذرها جهارا ولا تخش الهلاك بها
Let it cry out loud and fear not its ruin
صيرت دمعي مثل خدك أحمرا
You made my tears the color of your cheeks, red
هذا محياه إذ دار العذار به
This is his greeting as reproach circulated about him
ترنم حمام الدوح في أحسن الصدح
The dove coos melodiously in the most beautiful valley
ما أحسن عكا من بلد
How beautiful is Acre, the land
أحسن بهذا السلسبيل الذي
Drink from this sweet brook whose
يا حسنها من بركة يحلو بها
O, what a blessing is her beauty, sweetened by it
تأمل بذا الحوض حسنا وماء
Behold this basin, beautiful and watered,
بنى سليمان سلسبيلا
Solomon built Salwa,
فؤادي ملؤه لهب
My heart's aflame with passion's fire
قلت للغصين قامة واعتدالا
I said to the branch, standing tall and upright,
علي نحت القوافي حين أنظمها وإنها
The rhyming rests on me when I compose it
علي نحت القوافي حين أنظمها
When I compose rhymes, it's up to me
بروحي نجل الخد ورد خدوده
With my spirit the rose is the son of cheeks
الله قلد أهل العلم شرعته
God has entrusted the scholars with His law
على وجناته قد لاح آس
Upon his cheeks appeared a trace of love sickness
بشارة خير بالسعود مصاحب
Good tidings heralding prosperity accompany well-being,
زنت مقلتي لما رأت شمس وجهه
My eyelids flirted when they saw the sun of his face,
يا درة وضعت في وسط وجنته
O pearl placed in the center of his garden
من يعل ذاتا حوى العليا بلا طلب
Who has attained the heights without desire

I looked into the eye of the sun near its setting
تزايد وجدي وولى الشباب
My passion grew, and youth took wing and fled,
أبغي زيارتها والنفس طالبة
I yearn to visit her, though my soul desires,
أشمس ما رأيت بلا كسوف
Suns that I have not seen without eclipse,
أراقب النجم طول الليل من ولهي
I gaze upon the star all through the night enthralled
ولا بدع أن قد غاب من حسن زينب
Without a doubt, there has disappeared from Zaynab's beauty
أنت ذاتي ولا أحب لذاتي
You are my essential self, I love nothing for myself
وما كان حالي مثل حال حمامة
My state is not like a dove's state
ومن عجبي أن الصوارم والقنا
And of my wonders is that swords and spears
نعماك بحر الندى بحر غرقت به
Your blessings are an ocean of dew, an ocean in which I drowned
قد كستني بحلة الأوصاب
She clothed me in the garb of passionate love,
وبارد طبع قد تقلد صارما
With an icy and austere disposition he bears
إن حبي مذ تبدى
Since his face appeared
ولست بمن نعماك قد كان جاحدا
I'm not one who denies blessings you've given,
أفديك يا أيها المسكي في مهج
I offer myself for your sake, oh musky one with perfumed interior
نعم كلما التفت الحب خلفا
Yes, whenever love looked back
بنيت حمام عشق
You built a bathhouse of love
ما كنت أجحد نعمة أوليتها
I do not deny a blessing bestowed on me,
إن السماء غدت تزهو بزرقتها
The sky now glows with its blueness
قال الثقيل أراك تكره رؤيتي
The heavy one said, "I see you despise seeing me,
روحي الفداء لبدر لاح مبتسما
My soul is ransom for a full moon that rose smiling,
لينا قسي بحال عبدك
Gentle to your servant in my state,
لحلاقه إذ جاء يحلق رأسه
When his barber came to cut his hair
ترامى شعاع الشمس عنها نيابة
The sun's rays extend in her stead
عذولي دع عنك لومي بوجدي
My blamer, cease blaming my passion;
دام سهد الصب والدمع يسح
The sleeplessness of dawn persists as tears flow,
فلا تطلبوا غير الحبيب بقتلتي
Do not seek my murderer but the beloved
الجفن بالفتح ولكن كسره
The eyelid opens, but breaks it
ولما ذكت نار الغرام بمهجتي
When the fire of passion flared up in my innermost being,
لقد ذهب الحبيب وغاب عني
My beloved has gone and vanished from me
وذي جمال كأن الشمس وجنته
With beauty like the sun, her cheeks so fair
نفس العقاب يهرب البازات
The breath of the falcon smuggles the ducks,
ضممت حبيبي للهوى واعتنقته
I embraced my beloved in passion and held him close,
لقد أنحل الهجران جسمي في الهوى
The pangs of longing wasted me away,
همت في القفر بالهوى وغرامي
I fell into the grave with passion and love,
تبدى عند صدغيه عذار
Upon his cheeks bloomed a rose
يا خاله أنت قلبي حل وجنته
O my mole, you are my heart's solace and its paradise
تزايد بي وجدي بحسن شقيقة
My longing grows with every cup my darling pours
أخا العلم والعرفان من لا يشارك
Brother of knowledge and understanding, few in this age can match you
إن العيون من الملاح قواضب
Eyes that slay with a glance like skiffs riding the flood-tide of sweet water,
إن قلبي بغرامي طفحا
My heart overflowed with passion
علي بليمون كرمت أخا الندى
You have gifted me a lemon, brother of dew
علمته حكما حتى يوقرني
I taught him wisdom so he would respect me
ويوم ثلج به قوس السحاب رمى
A day of snow, when the rainbow of clouds cast
للروض بادر تمنح التكريما
To reach the garden, hasten, you will be granted honor
سلوا لي نجوم الليل فورا بلا إبطا
Ask quickly for me the stars of the night without delay
أبدر العلى أهلا وسهلا ومرحبا
The sublime have arrived, welcome, at ease, greeted
قد غرد القمري فوق الفنن
The moon has sung over the branches,
ألا يا مصطفى شلبي
O Mustafa Shalabi, my brother
لك الله من شهم عزيز ومكرم
You, with your valor and generosity, are nobly honored,
تشببت حتى قيل لي أنت عاشق
I pretended until it was said to me, “You are a lover!”
على خده القاني لقد كتب البها
Upon his cheek the critic wrote reproach,
ذا جامع على التقى بنيانه
This mosque built on piety,
أحمد الله إلهي
I praise Allah, my God
أهيم وما قلبي من البين خائف
I yearn while my heart fears separation
وقاض تولى الشرع والشرع عينه
A judge assumed control of the law, and the law was his eye,
وليل به زار والكون ضاء
A night with him has visited, and the universe shone
جرى مدمعي واعوج كالسيف مصلتا
My tears flowed and bent like a sword slashing
أيا شمس الوزارة بدر عز
O sun of ministry, full moon of glory
وظبي من الأتراك قان محاسن
My gazelle from the Turks has exquisite beauty
يا من يجيب الداعيا
O You who answers the supplicant
عافاك ربي وأرجو الله يشفيكا
May my Lord grant you well-being, and I hope Allah will heal you,
القلب من الجوى كليم
The heart is sick with passion
روض حسن في كفه شمت وردا
A garden of beauty in his palm, he plucked a rose
قد خالط الود روحي ثم مازجها
Love has penetrated my soul and then pervaded it
لقد تبدى الصبح من شرقه
The dawn has clearly appeared from its east
بي كعبة الحسن البديعة وجهه
His face is like the Kaaba of sublime beauty
حبات مسك تبدت وسط وجنته
Musk pearls scattered amidst his cheeks,
إنما الدنيا فناء
This world is fleeting,
وإذا قصدت إلى الكرام بحاجة
When you approach the generous with a need
سليمان الزمان جزيت خيرا
O Solomon of the age, you have been rewarded well,
وأغيد تحكي الخيزرانة قامة
The slender fig tree tells of swaying
الغرب يهوى الصوم بل لم يزل
The West loves to fast, but never ceased
كم مدع فضل علم
How many a boaster claims knowledge
يا حسن نهر والزهور تناثرت
Oh beauty of a river as flowers are scattered
قيد النعمة في شكر لها
Bind gratitude with thanks for it
أنا الذي للواحي حيث قابلهم
I am the one who met them where the valleys lie
نهيت أخا العرفان والزهد والتقى
You forbade the brother of knowledge, asceticism, and piety
بالروح خداه ثم الأنف بينهما
With spirit he caressed his cheek, then the nose between them
كل شيء أردت أو تبتغيه
Everything you wish for or desire
النطق فخ وقل النفع فيه لنا
Speech is a trap, and little benefit lies therein for us,
ولى الشباب وجاء الشيب يتبعه
Youth has passed and old age has come following it
الصبر أليق نعم أجر الصابر
Patience is best, the reward of the patient is bountiful
نحوي التفت يا حبيبي
Turn to me my beloved
ولقد ذكرتك حين جدت بمهجتي
I remembered you when I was gripped with anguish,
إذا أبصرتكم أبصرت موتي
When I see you, I see my death
مر النسيم على الأغصان ساكنة
The breeze passed by the still branches
بمهجتي ثغرها المعسول مرشفه
With her mouth my pearl necklace moist, dripping
لما بدت بين أهل الحسن قد سلبوا
When among people of beauty they seemed to lose
الشمس لم ترتعد من قبل رؤيتها
The sun had never trembled ere she saw his face,
شمس حسن لقد زها
The sun of beauty has indeed set
يا من بحب الإله بالوجد فيه تاه
O you who in love of God has lost yourself
وشت خدها بالياسمين تزينا
Her cheek adorned with jasmine
فمن شبه البحري بالبحر مخطئ
Whoever compares the sailor to the sea is wrong;
تأمل بدار تسر الحشا
Behold a house that pleases the nobles
وبي محل عذار الحب ضمخه
My abode where lovesickness was nurtured
يشوب بصالح أفعال سوء
Good deeds intermix with evil acts
دب نمل العذار في خد بدري
The ant of blame crawled on my full moon's cheek
لقد ذاب جسمي بنار الغرام
My body melted in the flames of passion
لما نظمت الشعر ممتدحا به
When I composed poetry praising
تذكر أيام اللوى فبكى وجدا
He recalled the days of passion, so he wept intensely,
وباقة ورد يدهش العقل نظمها
A bouquet of roses, their arrangement astounds the mind
أنا في المحبة قد أطبت غراسي
In love, I have tended my saplings,
طلع البدر والظلام تولى
The full moon rose and the darkness fled away,
أحييت روحي بالصوت الرخيم وما
You revived my soul with your gentle voice though
له جبهة كالشمس شعشع ضوؤها
His brow is like the sun whose brilliance shone
فذي نعمة جلت وأحيت متيما
A blessing it was that exalted and revived Mutayyam,
ولما سرى نمل العذار بخده
When the ants of Udhara crawled on his cheek
زرع السهاد بمقلتي في حبه
With my eyelashes his meadow was sown
بدا على نار خديه ندى عرق
The dew of sweat appeared on his blushing cheeks,
التقى زاد العارف المستقيم
The provision of the righteous knower merged,
وقبلت فاه راشفا لرضابه
I kissed his mouth passionately for his pleasure
أقول للصاحب النائي أعاتبه
I say to my distant friend, reproaching him:
أبصرت قلبي قد أقام بخده
I saw my heart dwelling in his cheek
جس نبض القانون إذ كان ميتا
My pulse quickened when law was dead
من لم يكن صدره يخفي سريرته
He whose bosom hides not his secret
أهدي سلاما يزدري العقودا
I send greetings that scorn the ages
ألا إن فضل الورد بالحسن ظاهر
Behold, the rose's merit for its beauty is clear
وعدت بتشريفي وأنس منازلي
You promised to honor me and delight my home,
قد زارني ليلة غابت كواكبها
Night visited me, its stars were veiled
وجنة الحب تلك آية حسن
The garden of love, that sign of beauty
نور الكمال عليك باد ظاهر
The light of perfection upon you is shining bright
يا للّه بجاه الخضر أبو العباس
O Allah, for the sake of al-Khidr Abu al-'Abbas
بروحي ولي الحسن يبدي كرامة
With my spirit and the guardian of beauty, he shows generosity
يا أيها البحر الذي ملأت جلا
O sea that has filled my eyes and heart
العفو من شيم الكرام
Forgiveness is a trait of the generous
عينها الزرقاء الكحيلة يبدو
Her blue kohl-lined eyes appear
كريم مضاهيه عديم وجوده
A generous man, none can match him, his like is nowhere to be found
نبية حسن دعت للهوى
A beauty of prophesy called to passion
هميا دموعي هميا
My tears flowing grievingly
يا غزالا يرق خصرا وطبعا
Oh gazelle with the slender waist and gentle nature
يا لحظه السيف أضحى السحر جوهره
Oh moment when the sword's magic lies in its blade
جاء الربيع وقد ولى الشتا هربا
Spring has come and winter has fled away
إن الجهول برأيه استغناؤه
The ignorant man is self-sufficient with his opinion,
يا دار مجد على العلياء قد بنيت
O abode of glory built on the heights
أكرمت عبد الله بالشرف العلي
You have honored Abdullah's servant with highest honor
ألا إن للأستاذ ذي النفع شاكر
Behold, the learned mentor of benefit deserves praise
إذا رمت منهم ودادا فقدم
If you seek their love, go to them with speed,
كنوز البها والحسن منك تلوح لي
The treasures of beauty and charm are apparent to me from you
العفو من شيم الكبار وخلقهم
Forgiveness is a trait of the great and mature,
يا زايد الوجد يا من للشهود اشتاق
O Zayed of yearning, O you who longs for the witnesses
وثقيل ذات جاءني
With a heavy self it came to me
يا شمس مجد بها للمجد تأبيد
O sun of glory, by which glory is made eternal,
ألا إن شمس الدين شمس معارف
Behold, the sun of religion is the sun of knowledge
تملك لبي والفؤاد مهفهف
My heart and mind are possessed
هذا ضريح علي
This is Ali's tomb
بروحي الخال فوق الثغر موطنه
Upon my soul, the mole above the lips makes its home
السعد وافى وهذا اليوم مسعود
Good fortune is present and this is a blessed day
ثق بالذي يولي المنن
Trust in Him who grants favors,
بنى الوزير سليمان الزمان لنا
Suleiman the vizier built for us in this era
رعى الله وقتا كان للأنس حائزا
God blessed a time that brought joy to mankind
جبلت على أني إذا شمت باردا
I was created such that whenever I sense the cold
جرى ماء النعيم على سعير
The water of bliss flowed over hellfire
وقعت على ثغر المهفهف نحلة
A bee fell on the lips of the feverish one
وعام كسانا ثياب السرور
A year has dressed us in robes of joy,
لا يلجئن غزال المسك ذو حور
The deer's musk-scent, though pure, cannot make
وروضة نرجس غض نضير
A garden of narcissus, fresh and bright,
أيا رب إن العمر ولى كثيره
Oh Lord, indeed much of life has passed
يفاخرنا بكثرتهم عديدا
They boast to us of their numbers, many
أزورها أي وقت لم أبال بما
I visit her whenever, heedless of what
كتمت هواه حيث البعد نار
I hid my love where distance is fire
ومدعي الوزن في الأقوال يزعمها
The one who claims precise meter in speech
نبي حسن لتوحيد الغرام به
A prophet of beautiful monotheism
قصباته ممتدة قدامه
Its chimneys stand tall before it
وروضة زيتون أقمت بظلها
And in an olive grove I dwelt beneath its shade
وأوقعت تقبيلي بوسط خدودها
I placed my kiss upon her cheeks' center
سماء الدنى حيث الثريا مقارن
The sky of the world where Pleiades shine
رماني بسهم اللحظ من هدب جفنه
He shot me with the arrow of his glance from the bow of his eyelids
أكني بليلى عن حبيبي قاصدا
I call my beloved Layla, intending
أيا رب قد أولعت قلبي بأغيد
Oh Lord, you've set my heart aflame with love
يا حسن مروحة بديع نظمها
Oh beauty of a fan, exquisite in composition
وبي محياه ما أسنى محاسنه
My soul is enraptured by his beauty's splendor,
وجه العزم واسع خير المساعي
Direct your determination and exert great effort
يا بحر علم له في فضله اعترفت
O sea of knowledge, in your excellence all virtues acknowledge
داس الحبيب شعاع الشمس حين مشى
The beloved trod upon the sunbeam when he walked
يا هاجر الصب
Oh Hajar of youth
تعجبت أن أعلمت يا صاحب الحجى
I'm amazed you told my flaw, O eloquent friend,
خصر الحبيب بلطف قال معتذرا
The beloved's waist gently complained
المنايا قواطع الآجال
Death's strokes sever lifespans,
ذا السلسبيل بناؤه
Its aqueduct built with utmost perfection
في الروض قد أزهرت قرنفلة
In the garden a carnation has blossomed
لقد اكتسى زرق الثياب فلم يبن
He has clothed himself in the blueness of garments, yet nothing shows
واعدني الحب بوصلي ساعة
Love promised me a reunion one day
إذا رآني حبيبي كان يكرهني
When my beloved saw me, he would abhor me
عامنا القابل الذي قد أتانا
Our coming year that has come upon us
يا ويل صب للذكور اهتوى
Oh what misery for males who are inclined
ذا شهيد لثراه
This is a martyr in his grave
نبت العذار على محيا فاتني
The wildflowers have blossomed on the cheeks of a beautiful maiden
رب اجز بالخير سليماننا
O Lord, reward our Solomon with goodness,
لحبها كل حسن
For her love all beauty
تكامل في كل المحاسن وازدهى
Blessed with every charm, she shines more bright,
ما كنت من يهوى التيوس
You were not one who adored the monsters
هذا الزمان الذي كنا نحاذره
This is the age we feared
وإن الثريا والكواكب حولها
The Pleiades and stars around her
شرفت بيروت لما أن حللت بها
You honored Beirut when you arrived
شقائق الروض من نسج الربيع غدت
The anemones of the garden, woven from the fabric of spring,
فبئس الذي يعطي بمن وبالأذى
Wretched is he who gives with reproach and harm,
تبدى بثوب أحمر فسألته
He appeared in a red robe, so I asked him
إن ذا السلسبيل خير عظيم
Indeed this aqueduct is greatly good
ومن يزرع المعروف يجن به الثنا
Whoever sows good deeds will reap praise,
يا بركة يد النظام أتقنت
Oh Blessed be the hand of order that
أعلمتني يا حبر أنك بادئ
You taught me, O ink, that you were the initiator
جاءت لداري فحل الدار زلزلة
My home shook when you came to visit
الطير يا صاح
The bird, O friend
شابت عوارضه وابيض أسودها
Her cheeks grew rosy and her black hair whitened,
عين الملاح من تعشقته
The sailor's eye whom I've fallen for
إن السماء وقد تزهو كواكبها
Though the sky shines bright with stars
ذا ضريح الشريف سعد المعاني
This is the tomb of the noble master of meanings, Sa'd al-Ma'ani
يا آس عارضه حملت بنفسجا
O breeze passing by, carrying the violet,
انظر إلى الزنبق القزي حين بدا
Behold the purple iris when it appeared
إن الحمار حمار لست أمدحه
A donkey is a donkey, I do not praise him,
روحي فداء عذار حل وجنة من
My soul is a ransom for the radiance that adorns a cheek,
لقد بدا ثملا مالته نشوته
His intoxication has clearly appeared, his joy has declined
تحملي ريحهم ريح الصبا لشفا
Bear their scent, O breeze of the morn, that their air may heal
من رام أن يركب العلياء تخدمه
Whoever wishes to mount the heights is served
رأيت أخا جاه فلذت بجاهه
I saw an ignorant brother so I sought refuge in his ignorance
إذا قد سهرنا لنا بارد
When we stayed up late
حبذا زهر النرجس الغض يزهو
The fresh narcissus flower blooms beautifully
ما خاله غير إنسان بوجنته
None but a human being could boast
بني العشق شمس الجمال هوت
The sun of beauty set in the land of love
ألا أيها الجوهر الفرد حقا
O you who are truly unique essence
يا حسن هذا السلسبيل إنه
O beauty, this aqueduct
محيا شقيق الشمس روض محاسن
Greetings, O brother of the sun, garden of beauties,
ألا إنما الأستاذ في الفضل صالح
Indeed, the teacher excels in virtue
بمثلك العيد قد أضحى لنا عيدا
With one like you, the feast for us is like a feast
وأقبح به لم يحو غير قبائح
He has not attempted anything but disgraceful affairs
بشائر السعد لاحت توجب الرشدا
The good tidings of joy have appeared, bringing guidance,
ثنائي غريب امحمد في أبلغ امشكر
My strange praise of Muhammad is most eloquent in gratitude
يا لحد شمس العلى فيها بنور رضا
O Lahad, in it is the light of the Most High's pleasure
أيا حسن الذات باسم حميد
O you of beautiful essence, of a praised name,
سلام من مشوق ذاب وجدا
Greetings sent from a lover melted with passion
إن قلبي مستهام
My heart is burning with passion,
وكل من يستحي في غير موضعه
Whoever feels bashful when bashfulness misplaced,
جاءت بليل طويل وهي زائرة
She came in a long night, a visitor,
تصوفت في زمن الصبابة والصبا
You turned ascetic in the era of youth and adolescence
وليلة قمت أحييها بهم فرحا
And one night when I stayed up to greet them with joy
تبدى عذار الحب والبدر وجهه
The radiance of love and the full moon appeared
تصبر فإن الصبر أجمل بالحر
Be patient, for patience is most beautiful in hardship
تهني دمشق الشام في عدل حاكم
Damascus rejoices in the justice of its ruler
سهرت في الحب ليلا
I stayed up all night in love
جز على ذي سلم واقر السلاما
Journey to one of peace and bid the greetings,
سفينة بسعد بناها أمير
A ship built with good fortune by a prince
تقلد بالبيض المواضي وسلها
He adorned himself with eggs, scattering them about,
مقلة لم تذق من الهجر غمضا
A beloved who has not tasted the bitterness of separation,
تدوس شديد الدوس في الترب واطئا
You trample heavily on the soil walking low
برقت محاسن وجهها وسرى به
Her face's luster flashed, and travelled through
يا أيها الشهم مجدا
Oh bright star, so full of glory
يا حسن هذا السلسبيل ألا انقلن
O beauty of this flowing stream, convey
أتظن البقا بدار الهوان
Do you think to remain in the abode of disgrace,
قد حطه غاسلوه فوق مغتسل
They laid him down to wash him on the bier
وإني لحي إن شهدت جماله
Though I see his beauty's attestation grants me life
نظرت في الروض تبدو لي شقائقه
I looked upon the meadow, its anemones appeared to me
مغمض الجفن على لحظ أحد
The eyelids closed for an instant from a lethal sword that kills all
بدا قوس السماء بكل حسن
فضل على الأرض بدا للسما
قد صفت لي كدور دهري العنيف
وما لطف النسيم سوى الكتاب
لقد غلط الحبيب فجاء يوما
بي عذار الحب يبدو
في وجهه شرف الجمال قد اعتلى
لكل محب عذول ولكن
بكيت دما أحرق العشب في الفلا
وروض أضحت الأزهار فيه
وبدر جمال كالرديني قده
قنعت بأني كل عام أزورها
تقول لظبي المسك ذات محاسن
لما نظرت بعيني شمس جبهته
قد همت فيه جوى ووجدا
طلعت كشمس الأفق غير محجب
فوق آس العذار در بدا من
قد كان لي إبل لكنها مسخت
بدا عذار حبيبي
وقفت تمر بي الغيد يوما
بروحي محياها وفي وسطه غدت
بي محيا الحب يحوي طرة
لقد قال لي عاذلي دع هواه
وما سحر هاروت ببابل محكما
ومكسورة الأجفان وطفي تكحلت
لا تمتدحه فإن الشح شيمته
دمعي جرى مثل الدماء فقال لي
بالوصل جد فأنا المحب المخلص
أنا الذي في الهوى بعت الحبيب جاني
رأتني حنيت الظهر للقوس مشبها
قاض يرى قدر الشريعة عاليا
ألا صلني وأنت بلا عذار
بروحي محياه وروحي قليلة
لما بدا العذار في وجهه
سلام هو الشمس ضوءا وحسنا
أثني عليك كأني العندليب إذا
وما شربه للتبغ إلا دلالة
في خده مذ بدا عذار
قد كنت ممن يميز الليل يعرفه
حمدت إله الناس للحمد مكثرا
لم يخل شخص من هوى
حنانيك ما ذا الهجر يا أم قاسم
كصحن من الياقوت قد خلت وجهه
استاك بالمسواك خالي اللمى
فاضت قريحته فيما له وزنت
رآني عدوي فانفعلت وقد بدا
عليك بالقهوة السوداء تشربها
يا شمعة ليست تشابهني
يا شمعة حالتي في العشق حالتها
لعمرك ذا السلسبيل بناه
يا حسنها من بركة موضوعة
تناثر من بعد النبات عذاره
طقطق الفانوس لما أن أضا
النوى نار لقلبي أحرقت
أيا حسن يوم في الربيع مغيم
ما صمم صب على المحبة أو تاب
بي وجهها أرخت عليه سوالفا
تولعت الأغصان بالريح والصبا
يا حبذا در ثغر الحب منشؤه
مديحي من يهجى ولم يك أهله
ساق هو الشمس المضيئة في الضحى
إن طال شخص لحية
روض به الأزهار مسن نواضرا
أقول لروض الزهر والورد رأسه
وما أحسن الأغصان في الروض والربى
وروض غدا يزهو رقيق هواؤه
ما عاشق يبدو بغير علامة
يا حسنها سنة بدت
إن رمتموا أن تنصحوا
يا ليت نصحي من أبغي نصيحته
ظلمت وإن الظلم في النفس كامن
هوى كوكب من أنجم العلم نير
جميل بدا مثل العذار بخده
من لم يبع روحه في الحب مغبون
هل صدكم عن منزلي عزولنا
وضع اللآلئ فوق أس عذاره
شاورتكم في أمور كنت أطلبها
سلام هو المسك الشذي شذاؤه
المجد أوصى بأني لا أصون دمي
وفي قده كالرمح يطعن مهجتي
يا حبذا النرجس من حسنه
ومختضب اليدين بدا بقد
في ذاته حسن التناسب ظاهر
بماذا أضاء الكون حتى المشارق
عجبت له لما تقلد صارما
وشقيقة في كف أهيف قلبت
وظبي قسا قلبا ولان معاطفا
نبي حسن إلى دين الغرام دعا
مكاتبتي للبعد أضحت شكاية
بيض القرنفل الذي
نسب الفساد إلى الزمان
قد زارني منا حبيبي
هذي الثريا وهذا البدر قارنها

ما لي بكسب سوى المعالي مطمع
كم من صديق أراني حسن صحبته
وبي ناعس الأجفان من خمرة الكرى
ذات الجمال قد درت

أحسن بوجنته البيضاء خالطها
محبي لساني وهو عني مترجم
أيا حسن ثغر الحب يأخذ بالحجى
بوجنته اليمنى لصيق عذاره
أقسمت بالسحر بين الكحل والوسن
جفاني الحب ليس يريد ذكري
وليل به زارت وقد طال رقة

يا غصن بالقد
وعاتبتها باللطف في طول هجرها
من موجبات الهوى
هذا المقام المؤنس

دخلت حمام صيدا
لقد زارني ليلا فقمت ضممته
خبأتك في قلبي مخافة أن ترى
رمى كبدي الحرى بنبل جفونه
بإجازة غراء قد شرفت من
كل يوم أروم أن أتملى
وذي محاسن في لألاء وجنته
يا كامل الحسن لم توجد محاسنه

إن المساجد للعظيم جلاله

أيا لحد بحر العلم نعمان وقته

وبي العذار بقرب صدغي فاتني
إن هذا القبر قد حل به
بحر العلوم فحدث عنه لا تقف
يا أيها الأستاذ للأساتذه
يا أحنف الحلم الذي
ذا الكلب من مشرع البهتان قد ولغا
يا ربنا أنت المجيب
يا ربنا أنت القدير
هذه حجرة بناها محب
لك يا مولاي بسطت يدي
أخا الفضل في إتقانه لن تشاركا

وبي الخال مسودا على ذقن التي
