صليني سواد العين يا مهجة الصب

1. The darkness of my eyes longs for you, O tormentress of passion!
For you are the life of the soul, the basil plant of the heart.

١. صِليني سَوادَ العَينِ يا مُهجَةَ الصبِّ
فَأَنتِ حَياةُ الرّوحِ رَيحانةُ القَلبِ

2. You have stolen the fervor of passion from it, robbing it of ardor,
Oh, the yearning of the passionate heart for that theft!

٢. سَلَبتِ حشاءَ الصبِّ مِنهُ صَبابَةً
فَيا لَهفَ قَلبِ الصبِّ مِن ذلكَ السّلبِ

3. You have captured my reason, and it is no injustice, for
I was created to be captured, and you were meant to capture.

٣. سَبيت الحجى مِنّي وَلا جَور أَنّهُ
خُلِقتُ لِأَنْ أُسبَى وَكنتِ لأنْ تسبِي

4. I loved you with a heart brimming with passion,
With what the universe from east to west cannot contain.

٤. عَشِقتُك مَملوءَ الفُؤادِ مِنَ الهَوى
بِما ضاقَ عَنهُ الكونُ شَرقاً إِلى غَربِ

5. I rave for you with fervor, ardor and madness,
And in my eyes, the states of distance and closeness are equal.

٥. أَهيمُ بِك الولهان وَجداً وَصَبوةً
وَسيّان عِندي حالَتا البعدِ وَالقُربِ

6. I feed my fervor on the most delicious food,
And drink the wine of passion, the sweetest drink.

٦. وَأطعمُ فيك الوَجدَ أَطيبَ مَطعَمٍ
وَأَشرب خَمرَ الوَجدِ مِن أَعذَبِ الشّربِ

7. I burned with the fire of your cheek, though your cheek is paradise,
It seared my ribs, my entrails, and all that settled in my side.

٧. حرقت بِنارِ الخدِّ وَالخدُّ جَنّةٌ
ضُلوعي وَأَحشائي وَما حَلَّ في جَنبي

8. Yet I sensed that fire sprouting a rose,
Watered by the perfection of beauty from its sweet water.

٨. وَقَد شمت تِلكَ النّارَ تنبتُ وَردةً
سَقاها كَمالَ الحُسنِ مِن مائِهِ العَذبِ

9. Rightfully that fire burned my inner self,
And sprouted a rose that wanders in wonder.

٩. وَحَقّ لِتِلكَ النّارِ في حَرقِ مُهجَتي
وَإِنباتُها وَرداً تَتيهُ مِنَ العجبِ

10. You lowered over your cheeks finest cascading tresses,
So they became chains that shackled the passionate.

١٠. سَدَلْتِ عَلى الخدّينِ أَسنى سَوالِفٍ
فَكنَّ لأَسرِ الصبِّ سلسلةَ الصبِّ

11. With a glance of your eye when you shot it,
You melted the hearts of lions with that glance.

١١. وَصلتِ بِعَضبِ اللّحظِ حينَ سللتِهِ
فَذابَت قُلوب الأُسدِ مِن ذلكِ العضبِ

12. With it you melted spears in the scabbard's core,
Yet lions' hearts are not harder than spears.

١٢. وَفيهِ أَذبتِ القُضْبَ في جَوفِ غمدها
وَلَيسَت قُلوبُ الأسدِ أَقسى مِنَ القضبِ

13. The smoldering of your glance cast a spell you awakened,
Sending it as a messenger to people's minds, captivating and pulling.

١٣. وَفاضَ اِحورار اللّحظِ سحراً بَعَثْتِهِ
رَسولاً لِعَقلِ النّاسِ بِالخطفِ وَالجذبِ

14. It thus revealed among its signs a sign for us,
That is, your captivation of the mind from within the heart.

١٤. فَأَظهَرَ مِن آياتِهِ آيةً لَنا
وَهاتيكَ خطف العَقلِ مِن داخِلِ القَلبِ

15. So I believed your spell, sincerely acknowledging it,
And I refrained from calling it a lie or slander.

١٥. فَآمنتُ في ذا السّحرِ مِنك مُصدّقاً
وَحدتُ عَنِ التّكذيبِ وَالرّمي بِالكذبِ

16. The arrows of love glanced at your eyelids, which
Had shot me with love's arrow from the bent bow.

١٦. وَراشَت سِهام الحبّ أَجفانَكَ الّتي
رَمَتني بِسَهمِ العشقِ مِن وطف الهدبِ

17. So they wandered deliriously, the lady of beauty and splendor,
For your beauty outshines the full moon and shooting stars.

١٧. فَتيهي دَلالاً رَبّةَ الحُسنِ وَالبها
فَحُسنك يَمحو دَولةَ البدرِ وَالشهبِ

18. Your face is the sun of beauty beneath the dome of splendor,
With the line of perfect beauty, not east and west.

١٨. وَوَجهكَ شَمس الحسنِ في قبّة البها
بِخَطّ اِستواءِ الحُسنِ لا الشّرقِ وَالغربِ

19. The full moon on the horizon was never considered in beauty as it,
How can the full moon be compared in that category?

١٩. وَما عُدَّ بَدرُ الأفقِ في الحُسنِ مثله
وَأَنَّى يُعَدُّ البدرُ في ذَلكَ الضربِ

20. By my soul, your juicy lips from your mouth that
Surpasses pearls, pure rubies, and fine sapphire's beauty.

٢٠. بِروحي الشّفاه اللعس مِن ثَغرِكِ الَّذي
قَدِ اِفتَرَّ عَن دُرٍّ وَعَن لُؤلُؤ رَطبِ

21. It revealed the honey's nectar to be the best drink,
Your straight, supple throat that the hands of youth have played with.

٢١. وَعَن حُسنِ ياقوتٍ بِدُرٍّ مُرَصَّعٍ
تَبَدّى لَهُ شَهدُ اللّمى أَفضَلَ الشربِ

22. So blame me not for my love, my fervor and my wonder,
Or for what my passion invites me to, my strange ways.

٢٢. وَتِلكَ الشّفاهُ اللّعس صِرنَ بِلا اِمتِرا
هِلالَيْ عَقيقٍ قَد أَضاءَ بلا حجبِ

23. Accepting my advice to forget my ardor is impossible,
Can the advice of the passionate be accepted by the rational?

٢٣. أَقاما عَلى فيك العذيب وَأَغرما
بِرَشفِ السّلافِ الصّرفِ مِن ريقك العذبِ

24. Blamer, do you not know that in passion I have reached
A destiny unattainable by striving or earning?

٢٤. وَبي قَدّك المَيّاد كالغصنِ مائِساً
بِهِ لَعِبَت أَيدي الصبا أَحسنَ اللّعبِ

25. For in it the lovers have attained high status,
The elders have risen, O you immersed in love!

٢٥. فَيا عاذِلي في الحبِّ دَعني وَصَبوتي
وَنَحوَ الّذي يَدعو لِنَحو الهَوى عُجْ بي

26. My master Ali - may God honor his face -
I bear him witness in my heart in recognition.

٢٦. فَنُصحِيَ عَن وَجدي مُحالٌ قَبولهُ
وَهَل حَلَّ نُصح الصبّ عِند ذَوي اللبِّ

27. Abu al-Hasan, pillar of knowledge and piety,
Beauty of perfect virtue in his inspired knowledge.

٢٧. عَذولي أَلَم تَعلَم بِأَنّيَ في الهَوى
تَسامَيتُ قَدراً لَيسَ يُدرَكُ بِالكسبِ

28. He who the flags of elevation were hoisted for,
Atop the banner of the highest in excellence.

٢٨. أَما فيهِ قَد نالَ المُحِبّونَ رِفعَةً
أَما عَلَتِ الأَشياخ يا غمرُ بِالحبِّ

29. He pioneered in guidance a star for the wayfarer,
Clarifying in his guidance the knowledge of the Lord.

٢٩. فَشَيخي عَليٌّ كَرَّم اللَّه وجههُ
وَأَشهَده العِرفانَ في حَضرَةِ القلبِ

30. Father of glory and the highest, glory of the eminent
And their famous honor among non-Arabs and Arabs.

٣٠. أَبو حَسن خدنِ المَعارِفِ وَالتّقى
جَمال كمالِ الفَضلِ في عِلمه الوَهبي

31. Peerless and unique in his time, singular in his age,
Compared to him, how many bygone ages lie vacant?

٣١. وَمَن نُصِبت لِلفَتحِ أَعلامُ رَفعِهِ
عَلى عَلمِ العَلياءِ مِن أَحسَنِ النّصبِ

32. Brave lion unafraid of any critic's blame,
Brandishing the sword of truth, fearing no blows.

٣٢. تَصَدَّرَ للإِرشادِ نَجماً لسالكٍ
فَأَوضَحَ بِالإِرشاد مَعرِفَة الربِّ

33. Noble traits, seal of generosity and munificence,
With a welcoming face and spacious chest.

٣٣. أَبو المَجدِ وَالعلياءِ مَجد بَني العُلى
وَعِزّهم المَشهورَ في العجمِ وَالعربِ

34. The one through whom the country gained its bride,
Protector, displaying through him the height of wonders.

٣٤. عَديم نَظيرٍ واحد الدّهرِ فَرده
فَعن مِثلهِ كَم قَد خَلا سالف الحقبِ

35. A noble kinsman, generous of soul, his origin is pure,
An honored lineage, lofty in earth and sky.

٣٥. هِزَبر الثّرى لَم يَخش لَومَة لائِمٍ
يَصولُ بِسَيفِ الحقِّ لَم يَخش في الضرِّب

36. He is the son of Yasin, Fathallah Muhammad,
Upon him the prayers of God, family, and companions.

٣٦. شَريف المَزايا حاتم الجودِ وَالنّدى
بِبِشرِ مُحيّاه وَمَع صَدرِهِ الرّحبِ

37. Thus his grandfather the sultan in every place,
And pole of the gnostics - needless to mention the pole.

٣٧. وَمَن فيهِ أَضحَت لِلبِلادِ عَروسَها
حماةُ الّتي أَبدت بِهِ غايَةَ العجبِ

38. This Shihāb al-Dīn without ignorance,
Transcended the world and its shooting stars.

٣٨. نَسيبٌ كَريمُ النّفسِ طابَ نِجارُهُ
حَسيبٌ فَخيمُ الأَصلِ في الأَرض والسحبِ

39. O my Master whom I am his servant,
And whose praise is found in the best books.

٣٩. هُوَ اِبنٌ لياسينٍ فطه مُحمَّد
عَليهِ صَلاةُ اللَّه وَالآلِ وَالصّحبِ

40. To you, O brother of the highest, a virgin comes needily,
Upon her the veil of beauty from the finest habits.

٤٠. كَذا جَدُّهُ السّلطانُ في كُلِّ مَوطن
وَقُطبِ ذَوي العرفانِ ناهيكَ مِن قُطبِ

41. Seeking your praise she has straightened up and softened,
And in her suppleness she has borne the branch of ripe dates.

٤١. وَذا أَشهَبُ البازاتِ مِن غَير مَجهل
تَسامى عَلى الدّنيا وَبازاتها الشهبِ

42. So grant her acceptance, O you called to help, perhaps
She may wander proudly among her Arabic peers.

٤٢. فَيا أَيّها المَولى الّذي أَنا عَبدُهُ
وَمَنْ مَدحُهُ قَد جاءَ في أَفضَلِ الكتبِ

43. Stay in God's security as long as meteors shine
And stars travel from east to west.

٤٣. إِلَيكَ أَخا العَلياءِ بِكراً يَتيمَة
عَلَيها نِقابُ الحُسنِ مِن أَحسَنِ النُّقبِ

44. Thus has spoken the son of Fathallah, fervently saying:
The darkness of my eyes longs for you, O tormentress of passion!

٤٤. بِمَدحِك قَد ماسَت قواماً وَتعطفا
وَفي مَيسِها أَزرَت بِغُصنِ الرّبى الرطبِ

٤٥. فَهَبها قَبولاً أَيّها النَّدب علَّها
تَتيهُ فَخاراً بَينَ أَترابِها العربِ

٤٦. وَدُم في أَمانِ اللَّهِ ما لاحَ بارقٌ
وَنَجمٌ سَرى مِن نَحوِ شَرقٍ إِلى غَربِ

٤٧. كَذا ما اِبنُ فَتحِ اللَّه قَد قالَ واجِداً
صليني سَواد العَينِ يا مُهجَةَ الصبِّ
