1. When you praise the noble one's virtues
Out of modesty he wishes you hadn't praised him
١. إِنّ الكَريمَ إِذا مَدحتَ خِصالَهُ
فَمِنَ الحَياءِ يودّ أَنْ لم يمدحِ
2. But when you criticize the ignoble one's faults
He casts off all shame, no longer bashful
٢. أَمّا اللّئيمُ إِذا ذَممتَ خِصالَهُ
خَلَعَ الحَياءَ وَلَم يَكُن بِالمُستَحي
