1. Yes, his passionate love arose with longing
And found in longing ecstatic madness for it

2. And the fire of youth and passion blazed in him
And the embers of ardour in his heart increased his affliction

3. It left no heart or ribs for him
Nor any infatuation that lasted, for that was his desire

4. It unleashed the tears from his eyes pouring down his cheek
And remained constant on his cheeks was its harmony

5. So neither a shower resembles it nor other than it
And if not for it, its absence is unimaginable

6. If people were to be rained upon with a shower, they would know
That the eyes of a lover weep its clouds

7. It flows unendingly on his cheeks
Circling continuously, not hiding its density

8. And if the eyes of a lover were to unleash the like of it
And multiples of it until its continuity was impossible

9. It would have unleashed what it unleashed and his eyes poured out
With generosity of tears that its nobility did not describe

10. And his eyelids were exhausted from crying
So where is pleasure for him in love and sleep?

11. And alas sights for him were only a chance for it
The place where the lover’s eyelids resided

12. And that abode of sights is now unseen
So where can sights remain when their place is gone?

13. In it now resides sleepiness, and sleepiness is its opposite
And sights cannot harmoniously join with sleepiness

14. Sights even divorced it in love
And deemed being deprived of it as unlawful

15. And sights are not the way of lovers in passion
And the cheek of passion for one who does not sleep at night

16. And indeed sights in love are a prohibited religion
And wakefulness being obligatory then adhering to it

17. So oh wakefulness that attends to their eyes
And treats it well, its fasting and vigilance

18. You judge what you watch over – sleep and sights
For the rule of sleep is not lasting and its arbitration

19. And you are the lover's companion at the time of union
And at the time of separation, truthfully it is preoccupied with you

20. With you the lover spends the night conversing with the stars
So he dictates the conversations of love in his speech

21. He links them with tears about the anguished love
And about his wounded heart sane was its passion

22. And he recalls throughout the night the states of his love
Until dawn brings out its smile

23. And he observes the horizons in every long night
Because obscurity in it hides its darkness

24. So Suhayl appears fluttering like his heart
When it is stirred within him, overtaken by infatuation and ecstasy

25. And Suhayl sometimes appears and sometimes hides like a lover
Whose sickness makes him like the new moon

26. He yearns to the caravan of Hijaz from Najd
With the passing of cool breeze for his tents are in Iraq

27. He yearns to the memory of the Protected City and its people
With a longing that guides his worries

28. And the bulbuls sing to him from it with warbling throats
As turtledoves had sung loudly in the meadow, their cooing

29. He wanders without heart or mind or consciousness
And from love his bones were crushed

30. He melted away and his back hunched
And he almost stumbled with his legs and his resolve

31. He blazed crazily and was deeply obsessed
And was passionate as an infant before being weaned

32. So he has no sense to distinguish in love and passion
For sense upright under it ceased to exist

33. Days pass him by unaware of counting them
And his life was lost, nearing its end

34. As if he only had a day of life that went by
Otherwise a month passed or a year

35. He dies of love not consenting to live
And for ages sends greetings to it

36. My friend, may God protect you from passion
And intoxication did not jest in you with its cups

37. With the mention of love to reproach me intensely
So the blame from you on me is sweet

38. For the seeker of nectar tolerates harm
From bees as he reaps harvest, for that is his desire

39. And I cannot quit what you blame me for
So leave what would make me sin, for that is prohibited

40. And how can I abstain while passion is my creed?
And the religion of passion, I uprightly lead

41. I was suckled by it as an infant, its milk I drank
And one who suckles from it, impossible became weaning him

42. My body is passion then ribs built me
My liver is ardour and from me is its fervor my heart

43. My mind is my rapture then my self is my youth
My spirit, ecstasy and life, its harmony

44. I hung the possessor of beauty in procession of splendor
With a crown of beauty that did not resemble an organization

45. In a dress of beauty upon the throne of charms
Upon a seat of grace with perfection its structure

46. For the sun is but a servant in its presence
And the moon is to it but a boy in beauty

47. Its forehead and cheeks, and between them
Its brow where beauty then resides its position

48. Three suns then the dawn shone organized like pearls
Sweet is its arrangement

49. They rose in the horizons of all beauty
So darkness was removed from every horizon by it

50. And its amorous glance is intoxicated with sights
By which the eyelids break, therein is its wine

51. An eye that aids the misery to gush forth hastily
Snatching the minds of people when embedded in it was its drawing

52. Its glance arrows continuously without an end
And its continuity did not cease nor ending what was upright its duration

53. As if the arrows of its glancing were by its command
And in its words “Be” and by it is its authority

54. But from it the glance unleashed bare swords
And by that the human was pulled its swords

55. Its glance then the two eyelashes above them
And from there for the lover, his destruction existed

56. Four unsheathed swords fell thick
So what meaning was absent from it, its sanctuary?

57. And between the blush of its cheeks, chaste to it
By it, its musky moles were protected clinging

58. Like a dish made of ruby inscribed with splendor
In the surroundings of its frame from musk, not effaced its markings

59. So when the narcissus of the glance revealed its sword
The musk markings of its cheeks appeared

60. And between its dewy lips, guarding beauty
Upon it from ruby was its seal

61. From it, its sweet saliva flows smoothly
By which the sickness is healed from the heart of the lover

62. The bending of its downy hair like the curve of a shining sword
And what is spear but its length and constitution?

63. My beloved possessor of beauty, hearing and obeying
Your command in great agony is regarded

64. I consented to your judgement, patient for separation
Perhaps by pleasing the lover, his anger may be erased

65. So order me for forgiveness to kill me by my crime
For fulfilling your displeasure is the purpose

66. And whoever disobeys it would be contrary
And from it the lead rope of passion is lost

67. The beautiful people in the religion of love, killing their lovers
Is permitted for them, its lawfulness and prohibition

68. So here I aid publicly with beauty and splendor
My heart until the end of time has cast off its reins to you

69. With it decree as you wish, I am praising
And no blame upon you, condemn it

70. And return to kill me for your return is best
And be the best one whose care for my murder appears

71. And I upon my praise persist in my stand
And praise the one sublime became his position

72. Brother of knowledge, Lord of virtue, sun of sciences
And full moon of perfection, therein was its completeness

73. Cheeks of brilliance, to problems with his skill
His exceptional understanding and comprehension sublimated

74. He is the virtuous author, he said with his merit
The superior of this age even including its pillars

75. An imam solely of the times, and it is his concerns
And no sole one of the age but it is its concerns

76. He is the impenetrable pearl and essence
By which the precedent eras, seizing them surpassed

77. He is composed of honour and glory incarnated
Thus singular without his division being possible

78. And the judge of truth by truth his judgement
And to the word of truth his commitment existed

79. And in the doctrine of Nu'man established warning
And supporting truth by it rose his position

80. Sincere in the word of truth, not ashamed
And seemly his brilliant composed dignity

81. His position as judge ascended with his piety
And therein ascended to the highest rank his resolve

82. In it the cases wander hearing him
And appears his care to rule by the truth in them

83. And I heard praise of him that
If he says a word it is said his wisdom decreed it

84. So he rules in it no blame of critic
And how so when God's rope his clinging?

85. So the futile words returns from it prevented
And rises by truth defeating its adversary

86. And if son of Maqala had witnessed goodness of his handwriting
He would say oh if only I was his boy

87. By it the pens humble to his purpose
And he rules what swords cannot rule

88. So if he etched on papers one day observing him
Upon its chest immediately flows his speech

89. Lines that become strings of gems
Like engraving a bride in her hands its drawing

90. Eloquent, the horizon of eloquence he fully grasped
At its highest peak structured its system

91. The water of rhetoric flows streaming by it
Floats upon it aesthetic composition and harmony

92. The perspective of poetry presents itself obedient
And none but him holds its bridle

93. Meter and prosody travel humbly toward him
Each controlled by him its bridle

94. And it gallops by talent active upon it
Venturing strange expressions appears his attempt

95. And hunts in it every innovative splendor
By which the confusion of rhetoric upright became its body

96. And of that he gifted me a young bride
The essence of beauty becoming divided is impossible

97. The light of rhetoric upon her face is apparent
Shining and her veil did not hide it from us

98. And I gift her one an old spinster
And if I am blamed all the blame is upon me

99. By that I show my excuse to preserve my sanctity
And one who shows stinginess from it respect lessened

100. From it for her I wish acceptance and consent
And nature of its brilliant smile is beaming

101. And may the prominence persist in good living
Everlasting extensive shade does not cease its duration

102. As long as the gentle breeze blows upon the hillside
And sings upon the branch of the meadow, its turtle-doves cooing

103. The talent composed the prose of poetry
And by beauty of precision composing sweet is its structure

104. Pleasant by will of Allah was its beginning
Complete by goodness of praise was its end
