1. I yearn while my heart fears separation
Where is the heart of youth and passionate love?
١. أَهيمُ وَما قَلبي مِنَ البينِ خائِف
وَأَينَ فُؤادُ الصبِّ وَالحبِّ خاطِفُ
2. I fell in love with passion and folly
I became distracted while my tears do not flow
٢. وَأَصبو غَراماً بِالهَوى وَصَبابَةً
وَأَلهو وَما مِنّي الدّموعُ ذَوارِفُ
3. How can I cry while love brings the youth joy?
While my brother's eye is dry of tears of joy
٣. وَكَيفَ بُكائي وَالهَوى فَرح الفَتى
وَطرف أَخي الأَفراحِ بِالدّمعِ ناشِفُ
4. I long for the beautiful gazelle while she is in my mind
And I am utterly obsessed with longing for her
٤. وَأَشتاقُ لِلغَيداءِ وَهيَ بِمُهجَتي
وَإِنّي عَلى التّهيامِ فيها لَعاكِفُ
5. She settled in my heart, my eye and my hearing
Is there anyone else I know besides her?
٥. أَقامَت بِأَحشائي وَعَيني وَمَسمَعي
فَهَل أَنا دارٍ مَنْ سِواها وَعارفُ
6. No limb of mine but she is its life
Each is obsessed with her and love is ardent
٦. وَلا عُضوَ إِلّا وَهيَ فيهِ حياتهُ
وَكُلٌّ بِها المشغوف وَالحبُّ شاغِفُ
7. I have no patience with or without her presence
Oh woe to my heart, my patience is exhausted
٧. فَلا صَبرَ لي عَنها حُضوراً وَغَيبَةً
وَيا وَيحَ قَلبي إِنّ صَبريَ تالِفُ
8. A girl of beauty and beauty is her beauty
In her presence all beauties are like motes
٨. فَتاةُ جَمالٍ وَالجَمالُ جَمالها
لَدَيها ذواتُ الحُسنِ طرّاً وَصائفُ
9. Describe her in the best depictions of beauty
But her beauty cannot be enumerated by any describer
٩. فَصِفها بِأَسنى الحُسنِ في وَصفِ حسنِها
وَهَيهات ذاكَ الحُسن يُحصيهِ واصِفُ
10. She who outshone the rising sun and moon
If she appears the moon and moonlight are eclipsed
١٠. وَتِلكَ اِزدَرت بِالشّمسِ وَالبدر طالعاً
وَإِن تبدُ غابَ البدرُ وَالبدرُ كاسِفُ
11. She wounded my tender cheek in my imagination
So a brilliant smile flashed across my eye
١١. جَرحت لَطيفَ الخَدِّ مِنها تَخيُّلاً
فَبانَ سَنا بَرق لِطرفِيَ خاطفُ
12. She made my heart bleed in retribution for her glance
And my heart's blood reddened as it gushed
١٢. فَأَدمَت فُؤادي لِلقصاصِ بِلَحظِها
وَمِن دَمِ قَلبي اِحمَرَّ إِذ هوَ راشفُ
13. By my soul that is slender like a twig
By which the fine fabric is embroidered
١٣. بِروحي الّتي كَالخيزرانِ قَوامها
وَمِنها بِميسِ الغصنِ تُزري المَعاطِفُ
14. The morning breeze tells of her gentle charms
And by God, subtleties are narrated about Salih
١٤. وَعَنها الصَّبا تَروي طَرائف لطفِها
وَعَن صالِح وَاللَّهِ تُروى اللَّطائِفُ
15. The brother of excellence, the master of literary skill
An eloquent tongue from which subtleties are harvested
١٥. أَخو الفَضلِ ربّ الحذقِ خِدن بَلاغَةٍ
فَصيحُ لِسانٍ مِنهُ تُجنى الطّرائِفُ
16. The father of verse and then prose, pearls and jewels
With the magic of his eloquence, beauty halts
١٦. أَبو النّظمِ ثمّ النّثرِ درّاً وَجَوهَراً
بِسِحرِ بَيانٍ عِندهُ الحُسنُ واقِفُ
17. Necklaces of pearls made of precious gems
Their style, delicate, exquisite subtleties
١٧. عُقودُ لآلٍ مِن ثَمينِ جَواهِرٍ
أَساليبُها غُرٌّ حِسان ظَرائفُ
18. The masters of eloquence all agreed upon their beauty
And none among them differs about that
١٨. عَلى حُسنِها أَهلُ البَلاغَةِ أَجمَعوا
وَما أَحدٌ مِنهم لِذاكَ مخالفُ
19. Sagacious, the jurist of the self at the height of wit
With an intellect from which knowledge is collected
١٩. نَبيهٌ فَقيهُ النّفسِ في فَرطِ فِطنة
بِفَهمٍ إِلَيه الدّهرَ تجبى المَعارِفُ
20. To me he gifted a wonderful gift, by his excellence
My excellent and knowledgeable brother acknowledges it
٢٠. إِلَيّ لَقَد أَهدى رَداحاً بِفَضلِها
يقرّ أَخو فَضل خَبير وَعارفُ
21. A bride of pearls, and she is a precious first purchase
In the intoxication of harmony, none can describe her
٢١. عَروس قَريض وَهيَ بكرُ خريدَةٍ
بِخدر اِنسِجامٍ لَيسَ يَدريهِ واصفُ
22. She has no defects, neither overt nor in thought
Though what the jealous claims in this world is defective
٢٢. فَلا فضّ فاها لا ولا خينَ فكرة
وَإِنّ الّذي يَشنوه في الدَّهرِ تالفُ
23. May she remain, by God's protection, in fertile life
And may honor's abundance be woven around her
٢٣. وَدامَ بِحِفظِ اللَّهِ في خصبِ عِيشةٍ
وَحِيكَت لَهُ بِالمَجدِ عزّاً مطارفُ
24. For as long as the days and epochs pass
With no winters that stirred branches in the meadow
٢٤. مَدى الدّهرِ وَالأيّامِ ما هَبَّ شَمْأَلٌ
وَما حَرَّك الأَغصان في الرّوضِ عاصفُ
25. Nor leaves that rustled on a bough
Nor any days in this life with criers crying out
٢٥. وَما صَدَحت وَرقاءُ في غُصنِ أَيكَةٍ
وَما هَتَفت في الدّهرِ يَوماً هواتِفُ
