Many a morning I walked the road to Damascus

أرى الحسن مجموعا بجامع جلق

I see beauty assembled in Jami' Jalaq

وبأيمن طالع عقد سني

With auspicious stars my years are strung

بروحي هيفاء المعاطف حلوة

With a gentle cloak my soul is clad

أفديه لاعب شطرنج قد اجتمعت

I offer my soul to a chess player who combines

هنئت بالعيد السعيد وحبذا

I congratulate you on this blessed Feast Day

هنأ الله حسبة بك حلت

God bless those scales of yours that settled,

لقد أصبحت ذا عمر عجيب

I have reached a strange age

ولاعب يعرب شطرنجه

A player moves his chess pieces

أقول لدباب على المردفي الدجى

I say to the tank in the dusk's gloom

أعجب لها ناعورة قلبها

Her heart's fountain astounds me

يا سيد الوزرا إهنأ بها خلعا

O master of ministers, I congratulate you

وأغيد يشكو خصره جور ردفه

The camel complains of the burden upon its back,

ايا ملكا من بعض أوصاف مجده

O king endowed with glory’s attributes,

إذا سألوني عن هوى قد كتمته

If they ask me of a love I have concealed

خليلي لا نوم لنا عند من له

My beloved, with those whose hearts are astir, we find no rest

بهاء دين الله حكمت في

The splendor of God’s faith I made the judge

شكرا لها يا سيدي منحة

Thank her for me, my lord, as a gift

ولما بعثت المال عفوا مهنأ

When I sent the money as a gift of congratulations

يا سيدي ذكر بحالي صاحبا

ظننا طوله يجدي

يا من زهت عن أن تماشي شخصها

O you who walked away from walking like her

يا غائبا عن مجلس قد شاتمت

O absent from a gathering where you were blamed

يا جاعل الجامع المعمور منتظرا

O maker of the crowded mosque an expectant one,

هنئت بالأعوام تلبس بردها

I congratulate you on years that clothe you

ينسى الفتى إحسانه فيما مضى

The youth forgets his kindness of the past

فديت مؤذنا تصبو إليه

I congratulated the hall of favors and virtues

من معيني على دقيقة خصر

The one who is my support in my delicate waist,

جاءت إلي الشوربا فحبذا

Roses are red, violets are blue

وذي عذل لما رآني عاشقا

When the one I desire saw me a lover,

يا مليكا تنظر الشهب له

O king who watches the stars as

وراهن قلبي خفوق البروق

My pounding heart offered its wager

سكنت وابني بدار قوم

I dwelt with my sons in the home of a people

نعاه للفضل والعلياء والنسب

They eulogized him for his nobility, excellence and lineage

يا فاضلا حمدت منه مودته

O virtuous one, I praise his affection

جلوسنا ما بين أيديكم

Our sitting before you

إن في نائب الشام اعتبارا

In the wilderness of Damascus there are lessons

كنت في ظلمة من الحال لكن

I was in darkness of state but

إذا البلغاء نحوا غاية

When eloquent men seek the ultimate goal

وصاحبي ساءني تعشقته

My companion saddened me, I fell in love with him

قال لي خلي تزوج تسترح

He said to me, "Get married, you'll find rest

جفاني الدرهم من بعدكم

My purse ran dry when you were gone,

سيدي أصبحت مقروح الحشا

My friend, I have become wounded prey

سيدي شكرا لنعماك التي

My master, thank you for your blessings that

أمولانا الوزير دعاء عبد

Our Minister, Duaa Abd

لعمري لقد أفحمت بالفضل منطقي

By my life, you have overcome my reason with merit

عش يا ولي الوقت تنعش في الورى

Live, O Master of time, you give life to the world

شدا شدو الحمام وماس غصنا

The doves have cooed intensely, and leaned on a branch,

قالت ووفرة شعري

She said, my hair has turned gray

سألت الحلال فأعطى وقد

I asked the righteous one, and he gave though

علي ديون من ثنا لم أقم بها

I owe debts from praise I did not fulfill

شهاب الدين يا غوث الموالي

O Leader of the faithful, worthy of praise,

لا رأي لي في الشام بعد ما دعى

I have no desire left for Damascus after

أتاني علي الباسلي بشعره

The valiant Al-Basali brought me his poetry

يا كاتب الخاص ويا شاعرا

O writer of the private and O poet

يا رب ليل بته متنعما

O Lord of the night when I was enjoying myself

خليلي والأشواق تروي حديثها

My beloved, and yearnings relate their tale,

أقول لقلبي العاني تصبر

I say to my troubled heart, have patience,

فديت بليغا أهلتني سطوره

I was enchanted by an eloquent one whose lines prepared me

بيت امتداحي ثم بيت ممدحي

A verse of praise, then a verse for the praised one

لو ساعدتني حالة كان لي

If circumstances helped me gain

أشكو إلى الله لا إلى أحد

I complain to God, not to anyone

أهلا بمنداك السعيد وحبذا

Welcome your happy dawn and blessed be

مولاي ما اسم لناحل دنف

My Master, what is the name of a wasp's sting?

أبن لي بيضاء حلت لواطئ

Tell me of a radiant white one who came to the shores

تصبر فإن الأجر أسنى وأعظم

Have patience, for the reward is better and greater,

بلغا القاصدين أن الليالي

Convey to the seekers that the nights

أقبلت يا ملك الشجاعة والندى

O king of valor and glory, you approached

وغادة أنحل جسمي خصرها

With a swaying gait my body melted for her waist

لقد خفقت منا القلوب تشوقا

Our hearts have fluttered with yearning

يا سيدي قل لي ما طائفة

O my master, tell me what sect

نعتوك حقا بالإمام لما حوت

They rightly call you the Imam, for you possess

هنئت شهرا بالسعادة مقبلا

You have congratulated a month arriving with happiness,

بأبي نقي الردف يصعب تارة

By the one whose runner I ride at times with difficulty

يا وزيرا شمل الآفاق

O minister whose generosity encompasses all,

وهائم بالجواري الخود قلبي من

My heart is obsessed with the dark-eyed maidens

تعشقته غصنا ناضرا

I fell in love with him, a blooming branch,

شرعت يدا قاضي القضاة محمد

The hand of the Judge of Judges, Muhammad, began

شكرا لأنعم مولانا التي فضلت

Thankful for the blessings of our Master who graced

قولا لنور الدين عن خله

Say to Nur ad-Din about his abandonment

قاضي قضاة الدين دم في على

Judge of the judges of religion, a tear on a cheek

تنهدت لما أذكرتني النواهد

I sighed when the trysts reminded me

الحمد لله كم عطاء له

Praise be to God, how generous is He

وبديع الجمال زين بخال

With perfect beauty adorned, aloof

تحمل حيث كنت صداع قصدي

Wherever you bear my headache intentionally

وصديق أنشدته لي بي

A friend recited to me poetry

تفترس الناس في هواها

People are prey to their passions

يا منزل ابن علي حيتك الصبا

O dwelling of Ibn Ali's son, morn visited you,

لم أسع للعليا بخطو قاصر

I did not strive for the heights with faltering steps,

وزير الشام فدتك النفوس

I ransom you, minister of Syria, with my soul

إذا الله كافى محسنا عن مقصر

When God suffices the doer for the delinquent one,

يا حبذا في الحسن ناعورة

O you who is excellent in beauty like a fountain

قدم الحبيب من السفر

The beloved has returned from travel

يا سيدي نفحات جو

O my master, the breezes of air

يا صاحبا أسعى إلى بابه

O friend, I hasten to his door

قلت إذ عم علي بالندى

When Ali was covered with dew,

فديتك من كل ما تختشي

I ransom you from all you fear

تهنى مدى الأيام بالخلع التي

The days are delighted by the robes

قل للإمام الذي لولا عواطفه

Tell the Imam who, were it not for his kindness,

عش يا محمد في الدارين متصلا

Live, O Muhammad, in both abodes connected

لاح الإمام لطلاب اللهى علما

The Imam shone for the students seeking divine knowledge

مولاي دعوة معجب

My Master, the supplication of an admirer

مولاي لا هدت الليالي

My Master, neither have the nights turned

يا من بإمداحه اشترينا

O you whose praises we bought

إني لمن معشر للمرد قد ركضوا

I am of a people who charged their steeds

هنئت صوما ترتجي أو تختشي

You wish for a fast, hoping or fearing,

تركت المال والجاه

I left wealth and status

كان لي مال ولبس

I had wealth and clothes,

عرج على حرم المحبوب منتصبا

I climbed to the sanctuary of the beloved upright

رأيت في قار رشا فاتنا

I saw in a settled land a charming young woman

يقول لي امرؤ كتاب مصر

A scribe from Egypt said to me,

يا غادرا بي ولم أغدر بصحبته

O betrayer of me, though I did not betray his company,

يا سائلي عن رتبة الحلي في

O you who ask about the rank of necklaces in

عمري لقد زهت الأمصار حين محى

My life, I became weary of cities when their

وقالع من جنتي خده

With cheeks that are like lush gardens

وأغيد ينهب أرواحنا

He sings, plundering our souls,

أرسلت نضوا حقيرا

I sent a humble gift

بروحي تياه يحلل أدمعي

My spirit wanders lost, dissolving my tears,

يا حسن كتاب الحساب وخلفهم

O you who excel at arithmetic and those who follow,

أمولاي لا زالت مساعيك للعلى

My hopes still aspire to what is sublime

يا كريما قد طابق الإسم بالفع

O generous one whose name matches the deed

إذا نظرت كتابا

When I looked upon a book,

قلم العذار بوجنتيك جرى

The pen of chastity flowed in your hands,

أشكو لأنعمك التي

I complain of your blessings

عش يا رفيع الذكر والشان

Live on, O noble renown and stature

بات أنفي يشكو زكاما وقد كا

My nose complains of a cold though complaining of events would suffice

مولاي قاضي القضاة ما فعلت

My master, judge of judges, what have you done

ومصاحب تلقاه عند عيوبه

And a companion you find with his flaws

قاضي القضاة بيمنى حكمه القلم

The supreme judge rules with his right hand

دنوت إليها وهو كالفرخ عاجز

I approached her while helpless as a chick

يا سيدي إن طاب وقت ولائنا

O my lord, if our allegiance pleased you,

أهلا بمقدم صاحب العلم الذي

Welcome, O master of knowledge, who

ولما انقضى عهد النوى جئت بالندى

When the date syrup was done, I came with the dew

سكندري قلت لما بدا

An Alexandrian, I said when he appeared

وأصهار سوء ذو الدراسة بينهم

And in-laws of ill-repute, the learned among them,

لا تقيسوا ابن سنانا في الندى

Do not compare Ibn Sinan in generosity

يا من تبينت السيادة أنه

O you whose sovereignty sees that among people

يا ناسيا عهدي ولست بناسي

O you who forget my covenant though I do not forget,

يقول لي الحاسب المنجم ما

The computer astrologer tells me,

هنئت بالنعم الجميله

You have been blessed with beautiful bounty,

يا أميرا زادت يداه لعاف

O prince whose generous hands increase in bounty

قل للإمام محمد

Tell Imam Muhammad,

قالوا وقد زدتني برا وتكرمة

They said, as you've been so kind and generous to me,

جاءت العاذلات شيئا فريا

The reproachers came lightly

شهدنا بأن إله السماء

We testify that the God of the heavens

تبسم عن حلو الرضاب شهيه

He smiled, revealing his radiant satisfaction,

طوقت جيدي بالعطاء ومدحتي

You have adorned my neck with gifts and praise

شكرا لقاضي القضاة نجم علا

Thanks to the Judge of judges, the star Ali

أشكو إليك حالة قد أوقعت

I complain to you of a state that has befallen

قلب بمصر وقالب بالشام

My heart is in Egypt, my body in Damascus

بروحي من أضحى له الحسن عسكرا

My soul has become an army for the one whose beauty conquered me

تبدت وقد أخفاني السقم وانبرت

My sickness hid me, though it seemed to lift.

مولاي دعوة من رمته عداته

My Master, a call from one who missed his aim

كذا أبدا تزهى العلى بجلالها

Thus the sublime always shines in its majesty

لك مقلة إنسانها

You have a pair of human eyes

عيد تعود بالهناء سعوده

A celebration returns with its prosperity

تنسك في شهر الصيام معذبي

You practice asceticism during the fasting month while tormenting me

أما حمى قاضي القضاة فإنني

The fever of the chief judge, I do tell

بانت سعاد حقيقة

Happiness became real

منع اتضاعك أن تقبل مبسمي

Your humility prevented you from accepting my smile,

أهلا بمقدمك السعيد وحبذا

Welcome your happy arrival and how wonderful

رأينا تواقيع تاج العلوم

We saw the signatures of the crown of knowledge

دامت صلاة الحمى الزيني واصلة

May the blessed prayer of Zeiniyyah endure

سار الأمير علي في كفالته

Prince Ali walked in his protection

يا حبذا يومي بوادي جلق

O what a fine day in the valley of Jallaq

سبحان من وكل بي مشفعا

Glory to Him who appointed as my intercessor

قالت وفي صدر نار القلب منزلها

She said, while in her breast was the abode of burning passion:

لباب الحمى العزي وجهت مقصدي

The spring of ambition turned me to its course,

رب ليل ترى المجرة فيه

Lord of a night in which you see the galaxy

لا تنس يا مولاي قمحية

Do not forget, O my Master, Qumhaiyyah

ولي صاحب قد غيرته سعادة

I had a friend whom fortune did transform,

على أنكم آنستموني بذكركم

Though your memory brings me solace

أعتقت رقي من الخطوب فما

You have freed me from hardship, so how

يا من يطالع سقط الزند دونك من

O you who read the falling of the flames, within you

لنا من وزير الشام بر يحثه

The minister of Syria has been good to us

يا ويح من أصبح محت

Oh woe to him who has become in need

كانت لنظمي رقة

My poems once held such tenderness

إني إذا آنست هما طارقا

When I sense a worry approaching,

مولاي ما متعب يلوح على الس

My Master, no weary pilgrim who treks upon the plain

هددني بالدين في جلق

He threatened me with debt in public

غرس أياديك في هديته

Your hands planted in his gift

أسفي للدراهم الحلبيا

I grieve for the lost coins, their absence brings me grief and sorrow

أحاجيك ما حلو اللسان وأنه

I challenge you, though eloquent in speech, yet dumb,

سكنت بالنيل لو لم تكن

If you lived by the Nile, you would not be

ولائط ألثغ قلنا له

A broke man we met and said

بروحي مهاة تفضل الشمس مطلعا

My soul inclines toward the rising sun

ما انقطع المملوك عن ترداده

The slave does not cease his supplication,

جواب أتاني في ساعة

An answer came to me in an hour

سيدي إن الذي أوصل لي

My master, he who brought it to me

أكرم بأوقات لنا شمسية

Honor us with sunlit times,

أيا ملكا فاق الكرام وفاتهم

Oh king who surpasses all others in generosity

أيا ملك الشجاعة والمعالي

O king of valor and glory

حاكيت عرقوب الوعود

Promises flowed from your tongue like honey,

وبروحي المشروط في الحد يقرأ

With my soul conditioned on the covenant, he reads

لقد جددت يا خجلي ذكري

You have renewed, O my shyness, my memory

مولاي قم للمعالي

My Master, rise to the heights

يا لاعب النرد الذي وصفه

O player of backgammon described

لا عيب في بر مولانا سوى

No fault in our teacher's virtue but that

يا سائلي في وظيفتي عن

O you who ask about my occupation

يا واصف الخيل بالكميت وبال

O you who describe horses in abundance and elegance

إن الوزير أدام الله نعمته

The minister, may God prolong his favor,

لو أنها الزوجة أهديتها

If she were my wife, I would gift her

ماذا لقيت بمن أعشت روائحها

What did I find in the one whose scent I lived

لقد كنت في لذات ثغرك هائما

I was captivated by the pleasures of your lips

بروحي جيرة أبقوا دموعي

With my soul as their neighbor, they left my tears behind

وأبيض شعره طويل

His hair white and long

جادت صفات علي في الورى رتبا

The attributes of Ali shone ranks in the world,

أصبحت يا مالكي بغيض ندى

O Malik, your praise has become hateful dew to me,

يا ذا الندى السعدي دمت مهنئا

O you of blessed dew, may you remain congratulated

قل للأمير الذي في

Tell the prince in whose

قل لابن نعلان الذي أصبحت

Say to the son of Na'lan, who lost

مليح جلا من خطه لي رقعة

Beautiful is his handwriting to me a note

أقبل عند القوم يسألني

He came asking amidst the people,

وأغيد كلما تجنى

Whenever the springtime comes around

أما والله قد شرفت شعري

By God, you have honored my poetry,

تهن به عيدا أجل كبيرا

With it you celebrated a great and noble feast

ذكرتك والأسماء تذكر بالكنى

I remembered you, though names are called by nicknames,

أولاد مولانا بهم

The sons of our master - with them

بشراك إن السرى والعود مبرور

With your companionship, the journey and the lute are blessed,

يا عذولي خلني أغنم عمري

Oh my beloved, let me enjoy my life

أفدي قمر

I ransom the moon of my mind

أهدي إلى القرم الشريف هدية

I gift Crimea a present

جنيت بالتقبيل من خده

I reaped roses from his cheek with kisses,

لم أنس موقفنا بكاظمة

I have not forgotten our stance in Kazima

رب أديب رأى كتابا

O Lord of literature, saw a book

لي في الأصادق خائن

Among friends I have a traitor,

قم هاتها في الليل راحا كما

Arise in the night now going as

أفديه أعمى مغمدا لحظه

I would sacrifice a blind man for the sake of his cheek

اسكنت قلبي لحدك

You have settled in my heart completely

لا ورشف اللمى ولثم الخدود

No, not the soft cheeks or the wine's sweet flush,

رب مليح بأسه فاتك

A wondrous lord whose wrath was unleashed

مولاي محيي الدين دعوة مسمع

My Master Reviver of the Faith, your call be heard

أقول لمعشر جلدوا ولاطوا

I say to a group that endured and persevered

أقاضي قضاة الدين فضلك مسفر

I seek justice from the judges of religion, your grace is apparent

ضيعتكم قد أشبهت ليلتي

Your loss has resembled my night

نسيت ولست أنسى حسن بكر

I forgot, though I'll not forget, the beauty of an early dawn,

أترضى يا وزير الشام أني

Are you pleased, O minister of Syria, that I

كن كيف شئت فلا براح

Be as you wish, for there is no blame,

يا من غدت ألفاظه حلوة

O you whose words have become sweet

لعمري لقد حفت بأمن وصحة

For my life, nights of union for permitted happiness

هل بعد وجهك للرجاء نجاح

Is there after your face any hope of success,

أفدي الذي جبينه في شعره

I sacrifice myself for the one whose forehead in his hair

وأهيف القد فتان العيون قضى

He sways with grace, enchanting all eyes, decreeing

يا لائمي في رشيق القد معتدل

O you who blame me for falling in love with a graceful, well-proportioned one,

أشكو السقام وتشكو مثله امرأتي

I complain of illness and so does my wife

وافى إلي بمدحة قد أخبرت

He came to me with verses of praise, claiming

ليهنك يا عين الزمان وأهله

Rejoice, O eye of time and its people,

دامت بسعدك للعداة مهالك

May your generosity bring destruction upon the enemies,

شيخ إسلام الورى دم للورى

Leader of Islam, your blood is for the world

يا شهد لا والله اق

O lips, no, by God, I will not

دم يا أخي الدين والدنيا معا

My brother, religion and life alike

أهلا وسهلا بوافي الفضل كم شهدت

Welcome, O worthy Wafi, how much have I seen

جاء هلال العام عام الهنا

The new year's crescent moon arrived

يا خيل كتاب مضوا لبيوتهم

O horses of writers who have gone to their homes

عد مدنف القلب صبه

My heart has poured out its grief

بالغت في شجني وفي تعذيبي

You have exceeded in my passion and in tormenting me,

ما ضر من لم يجد في الحب تعذيبي

No harm from one who finds no torment in love,

أقول إذا استكتبت صدر رسالة

When I begin to write the opening of a letter

يا سراة الشام أشكو إليكم

O maidens of Syria, I complain to you

شكوت وبالشكوى إلى غير راحم

I complained to one with no mercy,

لا ونعماك لم يكن سبب التأ

No, I swear it was not to delay

أمولاي فخر الدين شكرا لأنعم

My Master Fakhr al-Din, thanks for blessings

ليل وصل معطر الأرجاء

The night of reunion has fragrant breezes,

وآنسة قد فرق الدهر بيننا

The days have separated me from my beloved

بستان حسن لا عدمت قطافه

A garden of beauty, may its harvest never cease

ترك الأسى إنسان عيني بعدكم

After you left, sorrow never departed from my eyes

طوق جود الوزير جيدي

The minister's generosity adorned my neck,

وحقكم لا مر بي الصبر عنكم

I swear by your right, patience has not passed me by because of you

قد أمكنت فرص اللذات فانتهز

The chances for pleasures are made possible, so seize them,

أفنى التي تاجها وقامتها

She who wasted her crown and stature

يا أهل فضل الله إن لبيتكم

O people of Allah's grace, your house

الكأس في كف غادة رود

The cup in Gada's graceful hand

تهن بها خلعة قدمت

She was adorned with a robe that foretold

تهن بعوده عيدا سعيدا

Rejoice at his return, a happy feast

مولاي أرجعني لبيت المال في

My Master, return me to the treasury's abode

يا تاركين للمحب أدمعا

O you who left tears for the lover

فديتك للندى والعلم بحرا

I sacrifice myself for the dew and the vast sea of knowledge,

حللت بمصر عن الحاكمين

I analyzed the rulers of Egypt

تبسم الشيب بذقن الفتى

The old man's beard smiles at the young man's chin

يا صاحب الأقلام والسيف قد

O owner of pens and sword, you have

جسم سقيم لا يرام شفاؤه

A sick body beyond cure

أفدي حبيبا ليس لي

I ransom a beloved who is not mine

لامني الفتح إذا عزمت على النأي

Do not blame me when I decide to complain,

أما ابن يعقوب فأندى الورى

The son of Jacob is the brightest of mankind

وحقك ما أخرت عنك لجفوة

By your truth I have not abandoned you out of aloofness

على اليمن كانت عزمة فاضلية

On Yemen was a virtuous determination

طمعت بالعدل والإحسان منك معا

I hoped for justice and kindness together from you

واوحشتي لمقام منك محمود

I long for the dwelling where you once stayed

مرحبا بالنظم يأتي

Welcome to poetry's rhythm

سائلي اليوم كيف حالي في القس

My questioner today, how fare I in prison

في أمان الله أنى سرت يا

Wherever you go, God's protection upon you,

مولاي مولاي نجم الدين دعوة من

My Master, my Master, star of faith, a call from

كان لابن الوكيل بالشعر علم

The overseer's son had skill in poetry

متعوني عنكم بمسموع وعد

Delight me with a promise I can hear,

وشاهد أعجبني حسنه

His beauty amazed me

يا مولعا بملامي حسبك الله

O you who blame me, enough!

ما لظبي الحمى إليه التفاته

What care has the thirsty gazelle for his life

قالوا فلان قد جفت أفكاره

They said so-and-so's thoughts had dried up

حبذا للدين والدنيا فتى

Blessed for religion and life a young man

يا سائلي بدمشق عن أحوالي

O you who ask about me in Damascus,

ما لي إلى السلوان عنك سبيل

I have no way to you without longing

رب عيش واصلتنا فيه غيد

My Lord, may we live in prosperity

لعمري لقد جردت في القدس عزمة

By my life, in Jerusalem you have shown resolve

بنوا وسكنا ثم نبني ويسكنوا

We built and settled, then they build and settle

تصدق برفد على السائلي

Give to the beggar though but little it be

وأدهم رهوال بقرية أربد

And Ahdam is disabled in a village of Arbid

أهوى بمرشفه الشهي وقال ها

He sipped the exhilarating wine and said "Woe to him who obeys and says it!"

حلا ثنائي على علي

A beautiful duet on an elevated one

شب الحشا قول الكواعب شابا

The muttering of the love-sick is the speech of gazelles,

أذات الحجى إن الحجاب ليمنع

The words of eulogy, though the veil prevents

قل لخليلي الذي رجوت به

Tell my friend, who I hoped

سلوت لكن قلبي يا سعاد سلي

Peace be upon you, but my heart, oh Saad, bid farewell

عجبت لحاسد أضناه أمري

I am amazed at an envier whose affair has weakened him

لك يا نديمي في التألف خطوة

My friend, take a step towards harmony

يا سيدي يا فلان الدين لا برحت

O my master, O So-and-so of the religion, I have not moved

لله نظمك للطروس لقد

Your composition for the roosters, it has

يا سيد الوزراء العادلين لقد

O just vizier, I have been

تؤخرني سادات دهري وقد دروا

My peers in status keep me back though they know

يا خاتم الوزراء الأكرمين ويا

O seal of the most generous ministers, and O

غاب ذو الفضل في حمى مصر عنا

The one of great merit has left for Egypt's fever,

مولاي قد جئنا لنحمل قصة

My lord, we have come to convey a story

دعاه لذكر الحمى مذهب

A longing for the memories of love called him,

قال العذول فزاد قلبا شيقا

The love-lorn said, and made my heart more ardent

هجرت بديع القول هجر المباين

I abandoned the eloquent words, abandoned the eyewitnesses

تقول المعالي لابن يحيى عليها

The virtues say to the son of Yahya concerning her,

أجبت منادي الحب من قبل ما دعا

I answered the caller of love before he called

سأسعى إلى أبوابكم ولو أنني

I will seek your doors even if

سقا زمان الصبا يا منزل الهرم

The youthful era watered you, O abode of ruins,

أفدي غزالا من الأتراك مقلته

I ransom a gazelle from the Turks, whose glance

يا متقنا علم الشريعة والندى

O you well-versed in Sharia and wisdom bright

بالنصر والإقبال والبركات

With victory, prosperity, and blessings

عش تهنا بك أعياد لها

I have lived blissful holidays with you

رب عيش نصبت كأس مدامه

The chieftain set up a cup of wine

يا خير من ينبي على جوده

O best of those whose kindness grows

شربت مدامة الندمان يوما

One day I drank the wine of regret,

حلفت لها بالعاديات دموعي

I swore to her by the routed adversaries, my tears,

أشبعت أكباد أولادي وأعينهم

I filled the hearts and eyes of my children

أحاشيك يا نجل الوزارة من أذى

I shield you, son of the minister, from harm

عش مهنا بألف عام وعيد

Live a thousand years in constant work and holiday

بروحي خطيبا جاور الترب فاغتدى

With my soul, a lover lived near the dust and found joy,

صب بمصر حيث أولاده

He shed tears in Egypt, where his children are,

فتانة الصب تجلى في حماه فيا

The charm of youth shone in its protector so

طلبت ري الغليل منها

I asked the one who quenches my thirst for a drink

A garment of love has destroyed me, its sword

عود ببيت على الأفلاك معمور

A dynasty in a home built high in the heavens

تسلسلت في خدي الأدمع

Tears flowed down my cheeks

وسواس حلا لا كوسواس

Obsession is no solution, not obsession

هنئتها إمرة مجددة

I congratulated her, a princess renewed,

لي صاحب ترك المليح وعاد في

I have a friend who left the beautiful one and returned to

من كلن من هفواته متنصلا

I come to you, replete with my transgressions,

يا صاحبا نرجو به النفع في

O companion from whom we hope for benefit

أهلا بمقدمك السعيد فإنه

Welcome, your happy arrival, for it is,

شكرا لها نعمى يد من سيد

Thanks to her, bounty from a generous lord

يا لهف قلبي على لقا رشاء

My heart longs to meet a beloved

عشت للآداب تحمي سرحها

I lived for literature, protecting its expanse

يا سيد الوزراء دعوة لائذ

O minister supreme, I implore your aid

وراهبة طرقناها بليل

A cloistered nun we passed at night,

رعى الله من جاورت في مصر بابه

May God tend to him whose door in Egypt I visited,

بكيت بأجفان المحب المتيم

I cried with the eyelids of the enamored lover,

يا بروقا على ربى يبرين

O lightnings upon my Lord stunning

نشرت لك الأعراب فيما طويته

The Bedouins spread for you, in what they folded,

هب أنها الظبي لكن غير ملتفت

Even if she is a gazelle, she pays me no heed,

وأغيد جارت في القلوب فعاله

Her songs stirred hearts with what they did evoke,

واحيلتي بظلام الطرة الداجي

My nights darkened by the gloom of sorrow,

رسمت عوادي السحر من ألحاظه

The magic drew its habits from his glances,

دعاني صديق لحمامه

A friend invited me to his bath

يا عجبا لي بعد عصر الصبا

Oh, how strange I’ve become after my youth

وغانية يوافقني إذا ما

When I lament, the wise approve my tears

إليك مدير الكأس عني إنني

To you, the cupbearer, from me if I am

كتبت وقد وجدت من التشكي

I wrote when I was full of doubt

عجبت لها مدحة ضاع لي

I was amazed by her praise that was lost to me

ومليح يقول حسن حلاه

With beauty he says, Hasan adorned his garment

حيت حمى حلب أنفاس غادية

The breaths of the fever of Aleppo have greeted

يا رسولي لصبي

O my messenger to my beloved

سقى وواعدني وصلا ألذ به

He promised me a sweet union at nightfall

تتوارد المداح في أوصافكم

The poets abound in describing your virtues,

شكت وقد سارقتها قبلة

I complained of her having stolen a kiss before,

شكرا لأقلامك اللاتي جرت لمدى

Thanks to your pens that have flowed for so long

أرجو اللقاء الصاحبي كما

I hope for a meeting with my friend

تناومت فابتدرت كعثمها

I slumbered, and she assailed me

قلت ولي في هوى حبيبي

I said: For my love's sake,

أيا واحدا بالمن منه وبالثنا

Whether with favours or with praise thou art arrayed,

قال لي الصحب ما نباتك يا

My friends asked, "What is your status, O one who claims descent?"

شاب فود الصب حزنا مثل ما

A young man bid farewell to his beloved in sorrow

وأزهر وضاح الصفات عليها

The most radiant of virtues shine upon him,

قل للرئيس جمال الدين لا برحت

Tell the president Jamal al-Din, I will not rest

وناعورة كانت قضيبا فأصبحت

A fountain once erect like a rod

إن حرمت القليل من مال بيرو

If you denied me but little of what’s mine in Beyrouth

قاضي القضاة أعز الله جانبه

The chief justice, may God strengthen his side,

بصالح حمص نستعين على الثنا

With the goodness of Homs we seek aid against adversity

نقطة خال ووجنة فعلا

A dot is empty, yet glorious indeed

ونشيطة الأعطاف إلا أنها

With lithe limbs yet her eyelids

تجني لواحظه علي وتعتب

My darling reproaches me and complains

مولاي كم من شذرة نظمت في

My Master, how many pieces of poetry I composed

يا سيدي عطفا على عصبة

O my lord have mercy on a league

عذبوني في هواها عذلي

They torment me for loving her, yet blame me,

أمستخبرا بالشام عن كنه حالتي

I asked a questioner in Damascus about the essence of my state

نقب على ود الجميل

My beloved's fire burns my wretched heart

ناعورة نشأت على عهد الأسى

A fountain built in days of woe like mine

وكنت أظن في كبري صلاحا

I thought in my old age I had attained righteousness

تقول لي الغيداء تحتاج رافقا

The morning said to me, you need a companion

أكتم أخبار الهوى عن عواذلي

I conceal the secrets of love from my critics

يلوم العذول على أعين

The blamer blames my eyes

قل للرفيقين اللذين كلاهما

Tell those two friends, both of whom

يا قارعا باب هجراني ولا سبب

O you who knocks on my door of estrangement without cause

يا سادة قد ظفرت عندهمو

O masters, I have attained success

قديمة راح في يمين حديثة

An old man walking with a young one on his right,

ألا يا حسنها فرجية من

O you, her beauty brings hope

للعبد عندكم رسوم مكارم

The servant has etiquette prescribed by you

لبست من المدائح ثوب مجد

I wore the robe of glory of eulogies

سيدي دعوة شاك

My master, a doubting call

حلا دمعي لخدي في هواكم

My tear flow sweetly down my cheek for love of thee,

نادى الهنا قلبا قد كن في حذر

The zeal called a heart that was on its guard

لآل في سلوك قد جلاها

With eloquence in every line portrayed

وغيداء يعزى طرفها لكنانة

Her cheek is attributed to the redness of the rose

بقلت وجنة المليح وقد ول

The garden of beauty has withered and faded away,

من شؤم حظي أنني عاشق

My misfortune is that I am a lover

ألا في سبيل الله فرع كتابة

Behold! In the path of God a branch of writing

يا طرس قبل امرئ فطن

O star, kiss a wise man

ووعد بعض الناس وعد كما

Some people make promises as though

إن أخرتني عن مديحك فترة

If you delayed me from praising you for a while

لي سيد رقى إلى

I have a master who has truly

شغل القرائح بالدعاء الصالح

Occupy your time with sincere prayers,

يا ملاذي الغوث من عائلة

O my refuge, salvation from a family

يا من أعاد وداد وا

O you who returned affection

تهن تشاريف السعود تواصلت

The glories of Saud have continued to grow

حمى الله من ريب الحوادث سادة

May God protect noble ones from ill fate's harm

قالوا وقد ملكت رقي غلام

They said, and you have enslaved my reason, boy

عين حواجبها ترمي بأقواس

Eyes, whose brows shoot arrows

ولي رقيب إذا ما الحب واصلني

I have a companion when love visits me

يا كاتب الملك تهنأ به

O writer of the king's decree, congratulate him

جدت وأفحمتني بما قد

I found you, and confounded me with what

ودف أشجار سمعنا به

The trees swayed and we heard

أمستنقذي باللطف من قبضة الردى

Save me gently from the grip of ruin

بقيت ابن فضل الله في الفضلِ مفردا

I remain the son of Al Fadl in excellence unmatched

تداينت من عمرو فلما صرفته

I borrowed from Amr, but when I repaid him

يا غائبين تعللنا لغيبتهم

O absent ones, we made excuses for their absence

يا إير لا تركن لعلق ولا

O friend, do not lean on an unreliable one,

رشقتني من اللحاظ بغمزه

She glanced at me flirtatiously

أفدي جمالا مذ عرفت جميله

Since I knew his beauty, I would sacrifice for charm

يقول الإمام الفاضل ابن دريهم

The virtuous imam Ibn Darayhim says,

حدثتني يوم اللقا فتصا

The day we met, her words were so sweet,

حبسوه لا بجريمة لكنهم

They imprisoned him, not for a crime, but they

يا سيدي شكرا لها

My master, thank you

يا ملاذ الأنام هناك الل

O refuge of mankind over there, prosper

بعث الرئيس لرزقه البابا

The president sent for his sustenance from the Pope

أقسمت ما رزءك مما يهون

I swear you are not harmed by what saddens you,

في دعة الله سر وعد في

In God's tranquility lies a promise

عسى لعليل الجسم طيفك عائد

May your frail body's specter return,

ونظم يجاري الناظمين جواده

His poetry flows smoothly like a generous steed

هنيئا لأفق الفضل إنك بدره

Congratulations to the horizon of virtue, you are its full moon

يا ساكني مصر تبت للفراق يد

O dwellers of Egypt, my hand has become accustomed to separation,

كل يوم سعادة مستهله

Every day begins with joy

أفي كل يوم أنت حامل مدحة

Do you bear praise every day

إذا كان أوفى سادتي وأبرهم

If the most faithful and dutiful of my masters,

يا سيدا ما زال لي من منه

O master, I still have from your favor

أرسلت نجلي واثقا بمكارم

I sent my son confident in virtues

عين البرايا جملت مملكة

The eyes of the wild adorned a kingdom

قاضي القضاة بعثت لي شهب السما

O Judge of judges, you have sent me the shooting stars of the sky,

رشأ رشفت رضابه أو ثعلب

Whether it's a young gazelle or a fox,

دم يا علاء الدين في رفعة

Blood O Alaa al-Din in elevation

يا سيدي عطفا فإني ميت

O my master, have mercy, for I am dying

سرت لحسنك في العشاق أمثال

Your beauty has spread stories amongst lovers,

كذا أبدا يا آل أيوب ملككم

Forever thus, O Ayyub's kin, your rule

يا سيدي يا صلاح الدين لا صلحت

O my master, O Salah ad-Din, no peace have I,

كيف الهناء بعيد النحر عندكم

How is joy away from sacrifice with you

ملوز الطرف أهلا

Greetings my adorned friend

سألتني مثيلة القمرين

The one with two moons asked me,

لي في ندى ومحاسن

I have in the dew and beauty

أترى يا سادة لي كلما

Do you see, O lords, whenever

وأدهم اللون حندسي

My complexion is dark and my physique lean

أفدي مليحا لي إلى

I would ransom my life for he who his mirror

أخا اللوم لا تتعب لسانا ولا ذهنا

O brother, do not blame a tongue or mind,

حاشا لوعدك أن يلويه نسيان

Never shall your promise be twisted by forgetfulness,

قالوا وصولات الورى حصلت لهم

They said that the attainments of hopes were granted to them

أفدي صحابا مذ عرفت ولاءهم

I would sacrifice myself for companions whose loyalty I know

يا مذكري بيت السعيد بأنعم

O reminder of the happy home with its bounties

نفثت بنو الشام الدما وتتابعوا

The people of Sham shed blood and followed one another

في شعر مولانا السنا العالي وفي

In Maulana's poetry lies exalted meaning

أشار علي الزين بالمرد لا النسا

Al-Zain advised me against women, not life itself,

ماذا على ذي الحسن لو

What might the handsome do

تناسبت فيهن تعشقته

Her three features made me love her madly,

قد آثر القوم من بيروت همهم

The people of Beirut have chosen their concerns

يا لائمي في خادم لي سيد

O you who blame me for serving a noble lord,

للصاحب العلمي الذكر نور ثنا

For the scholarly friend, praise's light burns

تجلدت كتب التاريخ ثم شكت

The books of history were bound, then complained

إلى مدح ابن فضل الله أفضت

I overflow with praise for Ibn Fadlallah

ليس يخشى من نجم سعد سقوطا

He who has seen Ali, the judge of all judges,

صحبنا أناسا عاطفين فغيروا

We befriended emotional people so they changed

سقى صوب الغمام زمان وصل

He watered the time of union towards the clouds

بكيت على لقيا أناس وددتهم

I wept for people I loved when we parted

أما حماة فعيش ساكنها

The dwellers of Hama live a tranquil life

دانت لك الدنيا وملت لأرغد

The world has surrendered to you, and two abodes in one day you wed

تركت للفظ الحاجبية رونقا

I left the rhyming prose a special charm

عندي استفاد ذوو التأدب والذكى

The cultured and the wise benefitted from my saying,

ما لي نديم سوى ورقاء ساجعة

I have no companions but mute pages

قل للوزير ابن تاج الدين يا سندا

Say to the minister, son of Taj Al-Din - support!

خلفت بالقلب بيتا منك معمورا

You left behind in my heart an inhabited home

ألا ليتني حملت ما بك من ضنا

Oh, would that I could bear what troubles you,

بروحي من في وجنتيه إذا بدا

With my soul, when he who has two cheeks appears,

بث المشيب على الشجي بزاته

The grey hair spread over the brisk young man

قضيت العمر مداحا

I lived my life as a flatterer,

حمى ثغرا بخال عنبري

The fever inflamed a cheek of ambergris fragrance

أخط سؤالي بالرقاع ولا أرى

I scribble my question on scraps but I see

روت عيني التسهد عن قتاده

My eyes have wept away their kohl

كل فعال العلاء يعجبني

I admire every noble deed of the exalted one

برغمي أن أهاديكم بمعنى

Though I wish to guide you to the meaning

تذكر جرعاء الحمى فتجرعا

Remember the fevered thirsting for water, so they took

كم أقاسي من الغرام وأخفي

How much I suffer from love's pangs, yet hide

شكرت لابن المحسني الندى

I thanked the son of al-Muhsini for his generosity

كم قلت باللثم وبرد اللمى

How often with a kiss and the chill of union

لا أترك الحب والعذال وعاظ

I do not abandon love and reproaches of censurers

فديتك أيها الرامي بقوس

I sacrifice myself for you, o archer with a bow

تأوب كالبدر في جنحه

He rose like the full moon in its glory,

تفهمه قلبي الشجي فهاما

My understanding heart comprehended him,

قل للكرام الكاتبين من الورى

Tell the generous writers of the world

أتاركة بالحسن قلبي مقيدا

A beauty has captured my heart, binding it

يا سيدي جاءتك في صدرها

My master, she came to you with

قالوا سررت زائرا بقادم

They said you visited as a guest arrived

يا سيدي يا ملاذ الطالبين ومن

O my Lord, refuge of seekers, from whose

تأملت من بعد الصبا حال وجنة

After youth, I beheld a garden, once blossoming,

وقفت على سفح الثنية باكيا

I stood weeping on the slope of the hill

قمرا نراه أم مليحا أمردا

Is it a full moon that we see, or a handsome beloved,

يممت بابك وهي مني عادة

I approached your door, as I often do,

لأنف حاسدك الرغم الطويل فقد

Despite the envy of those who disparage you,

دع هلالا لاح أو غصنا تثنى

Let a crescent moon shine or a branch bend,

تعشقتها في الحلي غصناء منثورا

I fell in love with her, a blossoming branch,

يا إماما في مدح علياه صدق

O Imam, truthfully praising Ali

تفدي كرام الحمى منكم كرائمه

The best of protectors ransom their honor with generosity

خير عيد بكل خير يعود

May every goodness return with every feast,

شكرا لها من أنعم قد شادها

Thanks to her from a bounty she has built

حوى فلكي عند الوزير وطالما

The stars guided me to the minister, and often

ملي الحسن حالي الوجنتين

My cheeks are filled with joy, radiant

عتبت ابن الوكيل وشك ظني

I reproached Ibn al-Wakil and doubted my belief

لهفي على غادة إذا أسفرت

My longing for Ghada when dawn breaks

نبي الهدى في موقف الحشر شافعي

The prophet of guidance will intercede for me on the Day of Resurrection

تركت التغزل من أول

I abandoned flirtation from the start

كم مدحة قد أجدتها غزلا

How many poems of praise I have rendered as romance

ومليح إذا نظرت إليه

Handsome when you look at him

نزهت وعدك أن أذكرك الوفا

I promised to remind you of loyalty

لئن جرحت خدي فلانة مقلتي

If Lana has wounded my cheek, my eyelids have wounded hers

إن الإمامين مد الله ظلهما

The two Imams, may God extend their shade,

إلى مقرك تسري همة الساري

Towards your abode strides the zeal of the young man

أحبتي في دمشق ما ترك الن

My loved ones in Damascus, longing

أقوادتي إني فرغت عن النسا

My love, I am done with other women,

وأغن في الفقهاء رمت تسليا

I sang of the jurists as a solace

لا آخذ الله غزال النقا

I do not take God's gazelle of purity

سيدي عش أبدا في أنعم

My master, live forever in prosperity

كذا أبدا تلقى الأهلة طالعا

The new moon always rises upon you

شكت من شيبتي عين الفتاة

The eye of the young woman complained of my gray hair

لي قلم بين دجى خطه

I have a pen whose lines in the dark night

ماذا من الشوق جناي والأرق

What agony of longing and sleeplessness

ألحب مفروض علي لغادة

Love is imposed upon me for Ghada

مننت بحل اللغز معنى وصورة

You gave meaning and image in solving the riddle

يا حبذا ملك حث الجيوش إلى

O how splendid a king who urged armies to

أحبتنا لا عين سلوان عنكم

Our loved ones, no eye tires of you

قسما بمجدك يا إمام زماننا

I swear by your glory, O Imam of our time,

سيج ورد الخدود بالآس

The blush has fenced his cheeks with sadness,

تناسبت المحاسن يا لبينا

The beauties have corresponded, O beloved of us

لفلان في الديوان صورة حاضر

His image in the gathering is present

مدت إليك المعالي طرف مبتهج

You extended to me the heights of glory

مشاهد القدس حيى

Jerusalem's sights revived me

صب تغنى وجنح الليل معتكر

The night poured its melodies and folded its wings.

شكرا لنعماك يا غوث العفاة ولا

I thank you for your gifts, O savior of the weak, and still

يا بارقا من نحو بشر باسمه

O lightening from the good tidings of his name,

لنجم هلال الدولة الحسن عسكر

To the crescent moon of the state, Al-Hasan the soldier

خذ العدس المشتهى مأكلا

Take the desired lentils as food,

يا مجزل الرفد للنزيل به

O shelter of the guest within,

حيت سفرتي من نداك المديد

When my journey took me far from your outstretched hand

يا مديد النوال دعوة راج

O generous host, I implore you,

كذا أبدا نلتقي كل عيد

Thus we always meet, every Eid

زادت شجوني فيه عن حد السرف

My passions for him exceeded all bounds,

رأى الغصن أعطاف الغزال المقرطق

The branch saw the gazelle's swaying sides

يا أيها العالم الفرد الوزير ومن

O you the singular wise minister and from whom

كلفت بشائب لا عذل يثني

The locks of hair that reproach me not swayed me,

عجزت عن راتبي الأدنى فوا حربا

I could not afford my meager salary, what a war!

قاضي القضاة عليها وتقيها

O Judge of judges, may He protect and guard her

نزحت لبين النازحين مدامعي

My tears migrated to the place of the migrants

بأبي على عين الحبيبة حاجب

By my father's life, on the eye of the beloved is an eyebrow

قل ليراع الإمام شيخ الشيوخ الو

Tell the shepherd, the Imam, the elder of elders

مزجت بتذكار العقيق بكائي

I mixed my tears with memories of 'Uqayq,

قف بباب العلا وقل يا كتابي

Stand at the door of knowledge, and say, "O my soul,

أسائله يوم النوى كيف حاله

I ask him on the day of parting, how is he?

شكرا وأجرا لما أوليت من نعم

Thanks and reward for the blessings you have bestowed

قف بالحمى بعد البدور وناد

Stand at Al-Hima after the tents, and call out,

كل الجوانح قلب فيك مشغوف

My heart is passionately in love with you

لقد قنعت رجواي من قبل ما رأت

My wish has been satisfied before it saw

يا صاحبا صحبت معارفه الورى

O friend, whose acquaintance adorns existence

ما زلت أقلع شيبة نسخت بها

I still pluck out each gray hair imprinted

هنئت بالعيد يا من يستضيء به

I congratulate you on Eid, O you who are illuminated by it

يا آل أيوب سقتكم

O house of Ayyub, the clouds of contentment watered you

لئن عذر الصاحب المرتجى

If the hoped-for friend excuses

سقت بجوار الدمع عني جواريا

I shed tears copiously near her abode

البرق في كانونه قد نفخ

The lightning in its fireplace has blown,

رب إن ابن عامر هائم الف

My Lord, Aamer's son is obsessed

يا طائرا بالحمى يشدو على فتن

O bird singing of passions to the feverish,

يا روضة الحسن إن النفس خضراء

O garden of beauty, my soul is verdant,

وكاتبة في خدها بدموعها

She writes on her cheek with her tears

يوم صحو فاجعله لي يوم سكر

A morning of sobriety, make it for me a morning of intoxication

استنشدوني لطيف شعري

They asked me for my gentle poetry

أسفت لشاشي الذي قد مضى

I regret my television that is now gone

لولا معاني السحر من لحظاتها

Had it not been for the magical meanings in its moments

عن خده منع الرقيب

The chaperone forbade his cheek

لقد نفر الحسناء شيبي فأصبحت

My gray hair has repelled the beauty, so that

أتى الملبس الصوف الذي قد بعثته

The woolen garment I sent has come

مولاي هنئت فردا في الشهور كما

My Master, you are unique among the months as you are

أيا جنة الحسن التي قد تبرجت

O garden of beauty that has adorned itself

غازلتني سمراء في حلية المر

A dark-skinned beauty courted me in the garb of the full moon

ألا في سبيل الحب حال مسهد

Alas! For the path of love holds a smooth resting place

شغل الكبار من الرعية فكرهم

The affairs of the leaders preoccupy the minds of the people

على مثلها فلتهم أعيننا العبرى

On the likes of her, let our tearful eyes weep

وكنت أظن العشق يترك مهجتي

Once I thought that love would leave my heart

من مبلغ الأدباء أن يدي

The literati have informed that my hand

جرى دمعي إلى والدي وأهلي

My tears flowed to my parents and family

أرأيت نهج الحق كيف يبين

How clear the path of truth appears

يا إماما له مقام سني

O Imam who has a sublime station

جمال دين الإله أنقذني

The beauty of God's faith has saved me

ما للعذول على هواك وما لي

What is with avoiding my love, and what is with me?

ثغر عليه من الملاحة سكر

A mouth that is filled with sweetness when it speaks

سر على اليمن والهنا حيثما سر

Travel to the right, my love, wherever you travel,

عذلوني في هوى أغيد قد

They blamed me for loving one whose love

حاشاك من وحشة تحت الثرى وجلا

Far from you is the loneliness beneath the soil, O you who became an example for my sorrow as you traveled.

كفاني المؤيد عتب الزمان

The support of the Omnipotent sufficed me the blame of time,

بقيت بقا الأيام للفضل خالدا

The days of generosity and benevolence remain eternal,

أف لعبد الدينار لو رضيت

Alas, if only the servant of money would be content

قل لوزير الملك يا من له

Tell the king’s minister, O you whose

سل عن مقامي والرؤوس حوائم

Ask about my abode, and skulls are circular

جل الإمام عن الأشعار يعرضها

The Imam refrained from poems which expose him

حشى من نار صدك ذائبة

My longing burns like fire from your abandonment

ما لمن لام فيكمو من جواب

What can I say to those who blame me - nothing

تخيلت في إنشاء لفظي نجعة

I imagined in my poetic words an oasis

سقى عهد ليلى مدمع وسحائب

The covenant with Laila watered a weeping one, and clouds

أشعت حبي في القاصي وفي الداني

My love shone in the far and near

ليت شعري كم ذا يكابد حالي

Oh how I wish I knew how much my state is suffering

سر بنا عن دمشق يا طالب العي

Journey with us to Damascus, seeker of life,

أرى لصواب يا إيري صفات

I see the qualities of righteousness in you, Eri,

إن اللديغ هو السليم كما رووا

The unbitten are indeed safe, as they say

حيتك غادية الحيا يا دار من

Your life passing by, O home of those I love

لا وخمر بابليه

No wine or Babylon crystals

هل لك يا أرفع البرايا

O most exalted of highlands

يفدي كرام الحمى منكم كرائمه

The nobles sacrifice their souls for you, and the meadows scent when your banners pass.

أيا سائلي عن مذهب العتب والولا

O questioner about the doctrine of reproach and affection

مبلبل أصداغ أثارت بلابلي

My nightingales have stirred up yearning in me,

حويت ذرا المجد لما حويت

You embraced the glory when you embraced

جيوش حسنك يا ذا الحسن متفقه

Armies of your beauty, O you of beauty agreed

العبد يهدى على مقداره وعلى

The servant is guided according to his measure, and according to

ماذا أقول اليوم إن أكثر الع

What can I say today if the world

يا سعد دين الله أين الذي

يا سيدي قل لي ما اسم وإن

هنئت مقدمك الذي هنئته

قسما بفضلك إنه الفضل الذي

وفارقني من طار بي قبل فرخه
