1. When the twigs were adorned with dewdrops,
And the branches softly swayed,

2. His alluring glances stirred my soul -
Woe to the sane among the broken ones!

3. A gazelle with the beauty of a doe,
Veiled by bashfulness with a curtain.

4. His oppression pierced my heart -
Thus oppression wounds the captive.

5. He smiled, then spoke with charm,
Leaving me speechless and stupefied.

6. His glance intoxicated without tasting -
What an enchanting glance that was!

7. With feminine eyelids, yet
They confronted me with masculine swords.

8. On his cheek shined the image of my tears -
Tell this in the garden by the flowing stream.

9. His affection hurt me, though I know not why,
And he bent the boughs, so who is to blame?

10. In this long night of mine, who do I have
To endure it, with my short slumber?

11. May God curse the slanderers, for if they come close,
The gazelle distances itself in alienation.

12. And may our meeting be honoured while the land lies low,
As you saw the opening of the frontiers.

13. Many a dark night we had intimate embraces,
With necklaces plunging into bosoms.

14. The days of life have smiling cheeks,
And the face of company is joyful and delighted.

15. My union with the one torturing me is the Garden of Eden,
My garment in it is a soft silk.

16. My hands intend intimacy around his waist,
But the opportunity is too short for travel.

17. They refrain from a shameful stinginess,
So I raise them to a generous plenty.

18. And I conceal his mouth with a kiss, fearing
For my night from the shining dawn.

19. Those nights gave drink to the throat of life,
Though I compensated with copious tears.

20. The abode of bliss has distanced itself from us,
Though not touched by the short-lived.

21. A rising full moon, excelling in beauty,
Spurring the steed of superiority amid the full moons.

22. Poetry loves to flirt with him -
The delight of praising the son of the well-versed.

23. He is most generous when intimate and loving gifts -
I saw the torrent pouring forth from the clouds.

24. A brother to two days - a day of smiling joy,
And a day of frowning gloom.

25. He aims his glances with generosity and might,
Uprooting one lost or transgressing.

26. Thus glory is not complete
Except by blending dignity with condemnation.

27. I saw Ali like the son of Ali preceding -
A minister, elevated above the title of minister.

28. A king questions him about introduction,
So he asks a wise elder who is well-informed.

29. He sends his letters in every thought -
Battalions whose lines are shaped like curves,

30. Or bows, or arrows, or spears -
Of dāl, alif, and mīm.

31. As if his countenances amidst the enemies
Are a warning of old age with impending death.

32. As if his talk in every assembly
Is the talk of fire about kindling wood.

33. The leaders remain in his protection,
Seeking permission for attendance like commoners.

34. Meeting with people of requests,
The rich indistinguishable from the poor.

35. Until a face lifts the curtains,
Appearing solemn and veiled.

36. Bestowing upon the petitioner,
Enlightening the enlightened.

37. Leading the right to the truthful,
And benefit to the deserving.

38. Of noble temperament, surpassing requests,
Shaded as if the man were on the verge.

39. Retreating without gain after effort,
Save the cry of an angry lion.

40. Speaking of his ascent, an arrogant nose
Follows what it speaks with sniffing.

41. How can the goal of one so high
Be attained when sights recoil like glances?

42. He is thanked here and there,
And his excuses sprout like clover.

43. Noble virtues not denying requests,
As morning gleamed for the seeker.

44. Had the one making similes wished, he would have said
As fast as them in producing ideas.

45. He has a pen of hidden benefit and continuous flow
That spends the night watchful over kingdoms.

46. He learned in youth the traits of a lion,
Even in its roar.

47. Have you not seen him when matters interfered
And the steed intended, he declared with neighing?

48. Ink was the garb of a night upon him,
So he unveiled a shining brilliant morning.

49. And composed in volumes the Garden of Eden,
So his volumes contained the drinking of wines.

50. He neighbored the sweet life until
He dripped from it like ample dripping.

51. His wisdom ruled with the insight of a sage,
A watchful seer with medicines of ascension.

52. Of those who have an ascent
To the heights, swifter than the revolving sphere.

53. People sleep in peace and awake
To find him battling the evils of time.

54. In them are hearts concealing secrets for God -
Thus secrets are entrusted to hearts.

55. Their dreams have settled, and their delights have spread,
So he honored them with mountains and rocks.

56. I have gentle speech, substantial as
The flow of fresh water from the rocks.

57. My poetry ascended to their heights,
So we titled it the sphere of influence.

58. The finest composition is a delicate verse
Woven into great verses.

59. Most brilliant and beneficial of the worlds,
Bestower of well-being in the difficult times.

60. Our excuse in you has for ages increased affection
For your distinction over the ages.

61. If the weak attributes a sin to him,
Your generosity comes with pardoning favor.

62. The state of the sovereign sprouted branches,
So by your auspices you were its sharpest arrow.

63. You protected its porch and built within it,
By your influence, each line like a wall.

64. You settled Al-Basīṭah from commotion,
No branch shaking in the grove.

65. Nothing made you helpless in days
That you attempted, save the sight of an equal.

66. You are fortified by an evident argument, sweet
To remember over the course of time.

67. You have reaped every withered life,
Leaves fleeing before the hawks.

68. As if the earth were ruled by a sky
Illuminated with crescents and full moons.

69. Travel folded the plains with ease -
Excellent provision for the Day of Resurrection!

70. The sands of Mecca will say when you arrive,
What a large delegation this is!

71. Are you not the best of riders of steeds
And highest of newcomers in brilliance?

72. In it contentment revolves around you
Like your circulation around the Sacred House.

73. And a fragrance diffuses among you at the ritual,
As if musk were some of the sacrificial blood.

74. The torrents of provision remain in the Hejaz,
Never rushing to a rainy place of shelter.

75. When you honour human efforts, you spur
To give abundantly in gathering rewards.

76. So glad tidings to Egypt and its inhabitants!
Your journey towards it is the best outcome.

77. Your promise in the sky of governance is a full moon
Branching out from the rising of celestial spheres.

78. An eye for the times, manifesting expert opinion,
Which makes the corners of the frontiers smile.

79. I prolonged praising him, while finding in him
Generosity unparalleled by any equal.

80. I stood by his status complaining of the nights,
As the subjects complain to the prince.

81. I wonder how I thirst when around clouds,
While the majestic encompasses the lowly.

82. How can his shadows accommodate the wilds
When I stand amid the desolate ruins?

83. There is no dew in the clouds like his hands,
No gratitude in the land like me.

84. May God protect your home - the complaint of a servant
Clinging to you for equitable justice.

85. The like of you has rescued the ally of a house,
Reviving some inhabitants of graves.

86. Do not consider my right, but rather
What is in you of generosity and goodness.

87. I have come to you devoid of any skill -
So allow me, O Kaʿbah, refuge!

88. And gather in your era every age
As the year gathers its months.
