As if poison itself were steeped in them

6. O you made blissful by a phantom after their separation
Spare your mockery, where are the sleeping eyes

7. You tasked me with the inheritance of those who passed away
From passion, so can there be a return to union?

8. And to the critic among you, wearied, I said
If I am blind, I am not deaf

9. It deceives the hearing and intestines when she says
Others are more often deceived than these people

The clouds of tears and the flowing of blood

23. The dark-lipped said: Whomever of us attends to him
Spends her night, as they say, thunderstruck

24. The authority of pens flourished with his support
So they came to excel in every good thing

25. Darkening falsehood and clarifying every confusion
Is it the night that is murky or is it the lamp?

26. O noblest of creatures in purified morals
And best of people whether they fly or fall

27. The masses have bowed their necks down
To your perfection, overtaken by awe

28. Do not listen to people's talk of nobility
The words of others are lies and worthless

29. A band claims knowledge though ignorant
Splitting their noses as the misguided do

30. They portrayed you while depicting no wisdom
The mosques tell of their own function

31. An army whose garments expose their ankles
As if they follow in your footsteps

32. His prayers turned away the arrows of those who opposed
Not white, mourning, nor sanctioned

33. O son of the foremost nobility in every honorable deed
Whether they boast or clash, they clash

34. They have no keys to generosity when they reach
The pinnacle of glory, nor in times of distress

35. However much their efforts attained seriousness, they have not triumphed
In it, and however much time brought them down, they did not yield

36. For him is the finest eloquence of pens in his hand
And piercing through the tumult in times of peace

37. Its blade increases as the spear pierces his side
As if another rib were added to his ribs

38. And the refuge of knowledge in his homeland is for a lad
Of generosity, and in it are the honey and the sting

39. Let the kinfolk who avoided me know
That I am residing with you, neither poverty nor distress

40. Collared with gifts, sounding poetry without match
Forgetting the ancients, their generosity, and rhymes

41. I have comfort in your delightful gathering
And in the copious drink, relaxed and seated

42. Excellent is the lad you are, not tiring of a youth
His day sufficed him, neither keeping nor leaving

43. You restored my state without hearing my complaint
After people resented me, though they heard

44. My thoughts flowed freely in some praises of him
And to the poor also, with drink and passion

45. I searched for your brilliant traits but its attainment is denied
Safekeeping it and keeping your loftiness from reach

I will not cease restoring favor to me though

47. My youth expires, there can be no restoring it

48. And I said to al-Khatib, praise him mentioning the munificence
Of others, though most people are thereby deceived
