1. He smiled, revealing his radiant satisfaction,
We narrated the excellence of his beauty truthfully,

2. And the brilliant full-mooned one approached smiling,
Expressing his moon-like beauty.

3. He sang, intoxicated with the rapture of youth,
My companion gently swayed the branch in its silkiness,

4. I did not see a branch more beautiful than it, murmuring
Amidst the leaves of brocade and the folds of its adornment.

5. A full moon whose lineage among Arabs and Turks is nobility
That summoned me to the lover of passion and storytelling,

6. Brandishing his spear from an elevated place,
Upright in stance, launching arrows from his bow's curving,

7. Intoxicating my mind with his cheek's wine
Quenched from my rainclouds in Ina's valley,

8. What a gold coin his cheek, having gained
A beauty resembling Joseph's in its perfection!

9. I sought faithfulness in love, hoping for Eden,
But the hand of the reproacher flared up against me,

10. The wine makes his name clear to me
And my hearing is delighted by any mention of him,

11. I was patient with the slanderer - so excellent is one patient
Slain by the intoxicating glance's stalking,

12. How can patience be sweet without the mouth of the beloved
Whose mention moistened the dryness of my intoxication?

13. He avoided, and how could one unaccustomed to love be excused,
No apology exonerates the blame of passion and devotion!

14. If the water of life escaped me through his mouth,
How much trouble have I encountered beyond its reach!

15. How much wine we shared, rotated between us,
My intimate friend, quenching my thirst!

16. His cheek's whiteness and blush raided me
So woe to my Qaysian, Yemini soul!

17. Alas for the secret of youth in its darkness,
No greying hair exposed its purity,

18. No rhyme scheme restricted the poem of life,
Nor disabled its verses' composition.

19. I was enamored of the traces of its days,
And of the house of Virtue's bounty upon it,

20. Minister of kings, strengthening their resolve,
Seal of time, restraining the hands of enemies,

21. Master of two administrations, his superiority declared
The exalted spoke of it, and the best,

22. His hands made pens flow without boastfulness,
His opinions blazed, lacking falsity,

23. Of elevated lineage, raised to his beloved
Umar to whom I profess loyalty,

24. Whose eloquent pen, whether gently
Or strongly, is secretly practiced,

25. Guarding the sanctuary with letters' influence,
So the beginnings of victory came from his composition,

26. He laid down a limit amidst the fray and flourished in prosperity
By Allah, he branched out and bore fruit!

27. He crafted wonders, surrounding them with virtues,
Never devoid in either state of his golden touch,

28. At ease, granting every ease to the best of humanity
For the secrets of grace and clarity he relayed,

29. The fortunes of favor, generosity, and piety befriend him
Attributes that do not lack a guardian,

30. When eulogists employ his name, they eulogize
The most eloquent poetry purely for him,

31. Ibn Fadlallah ascends in merit to the utmost extent,
Fulfilling his task and honoring his companions,

32. What triumph for a people who believe under his care!
And woe to those who do not believe in his lightning!

33. He is the sea in its currents and bashfulness,
Or the torrent in its quenching and vigor.

34. If it is said "who is most majestic and of noblest lineage?"
We would swear by his traits upon our life,

35. If he traveled, victory traveled in his wake,
If he settled, virtue settled in his chest,

36. If he appeared among his people in the kingdom of glory
The full moon is not like his palm within the celestial abode!

37. You have been elevated by him, O family of Yahya, to the peak,
Gazing at the heavens from atop its heights,

38.
If you wish, the clouds will return to your horizon,

39. Extending the hopeful imagination to its pedestal,
O brother of knowledge and the learned, your rhetoric taught my logic

40. Wondrous subtleties of eloquent speech,
With your composition guiding the mind to rapture

41. Though it was of the purest speech already refined,
Our early poetry prophesied you

42. Until we almost called it prophetic verse!
With the miraculous ordering of pearly stars uncovered

43. And eliciting what exhausted minds could not produce,
You circulated my poems after they were folded away

44. Reviving them after their refusal was hardened,
My room's wall had preserved its inscription

45. It was a quarter - the tears of its inhabitants surrounded it -
Until affection returned your harshness to me

46. To my poetry, emerging with new meaning,
It smells of amber despite the hostility of foes

47. And informs of sincere opinions and probity,
There has come to you the most pure and sublime

48. So take from the choicest eulogy my gift,
And live, O son of Yahya, a happy life

49. Of delight, pure and pleasurable,
The years will come to you successively

50. With fortune and likewise with praise upon their passing,
As if the crescent moon of a new year were a ship

51. Bearing to you the owned gift of praise,
I congratulated it a thousand fold and more

52. Until minds lose count,
Good fortune belongs to all who befriend you
