1. It quenched your thirst and greeted you, O grave,
And its abundant tears flowed over your soil.

2. The pure clouds visited your grave, faithful,
Where the Pure One will gather with the pure.

3. The clouds rain down upon the tomb of the Exalted One,
Though within its precincts lies the land and sea.

4. A virtuous Imam whose wisdom guided the king,
A fount of knowledge obeyed by God in his command.

5. We lost him, his tireless efforts so valued,
Safe from sin though sin may claim the shrouded corpse.

6. I yearn for his principles-
To them the brown spears and the sweet yellow submit.

7. I yearn for his dark pens that saddened
The red swords and verdant boons.

8. Peace upon eloquence after his departure!
Peace to a man whose tears are now scattered!

9. Upon you O son of Fadlullah fell
Virtues spreading through countries near and far.

10. You journeyed on, so each traveller halted his mount
And ties were severed after you, O kindled ember!

11. Through you existence was morn and eve,
Now eve remains since you vanished; no morn in sight!

12. It’s not a wasteland where you once dwelled,
I see each habitation that lacks you is the waste.

13. You left independently, revered,
While religion and world still need you in destitution.

14. It’s as though you brought no benefit to a loyal friend
Nor harmed a foe. Yet you are thanked in times of voyage.

15. No army attacked with sheathed swords,
Led to victory by principles you held dear.

16. No books were composed, making clear
Ranks and lines of battalions in even rows.

17. A ruler’s secrets were not hidden from you when concealed
Nor was an open chest offered for your arrival.

18. You bore no burdens of authority, gave no order,
No shepherd submitted to your prohibition or command.

19. Rather, you protected people from fate’s trickery
So embittered mortality conspired, pulling your strings.

20. You were rewarded for Islam’s sake-
So often did your resolve dim its threatening sparks!

21. Darkness dawned mourning garb in grief over you
And stars in their rising places burned.

22. Why not, when you spent night vigils thus
And your so many fine qualities proliferated!

23. How many weep over you, how many
Find good news, and how many, reward!

24. May God not distance you from one who travels
Bearing sublime glory and aging wraps.

25. The enemies wish they achieved your triumphs
Or had but a tenth of your lifespan, not a half!

26. Condolences to him whose home today restores-
To Saladin consolation as solace suffices.

27. Lo, such are the days: acceptance, when fate judges one day,
And betrayal, such is their disposition!

28. People are but travellers, each trailing the one before,
One generation passes, the next appears.

29. Their tombs looked out over ruins
To show reasonable men: “You too shall travel!”

30. Marvels that exhaust beholders and wisdom
Impenetrable, which thoughts fall short of!

31. The utmost scholar’s knowledge:
Sustenance has its season, as does life!

32. For your sake, tell me, where is he whose fame took flight
To make every region his den?

33. Where is the son of Fadlullah, with high office
That outshone the sun or competes with the full moon?

34. He passed away- and it’s true to say he passed-
For his principles made their lasting mark.

35. His memorable legacy remains, no tomorrow
With meaning: neither weeping nor insignificant!

36. He honored with bounty the noted faster,
Devout servant who entered the Gardens to break his fast!
