I flee from His good pleasure,

وهارب من رضوان

1. I flee from His good pleasure,
And fall into fires,

١. وهارب من رضوان
أوقعني في النيران

2. Beauty is something tempting,
And sorrows have those who pine.

٢. والحسن شيء فتَّان
وللشجونِ أفنان

3. Perfect is the work of the Merciful,
Creator of the tall branches,

٣. جلَّ صنع الرحمن
خالق قدّ الأغصان

4. Bearing lote-trees,
The best of which has lote-tree pods,

٤. يحمل السوسبان
الجيد فيه السوسان

5. And in its trunk are pomegranates,
My eyes towards it are two springs,

٥. والصدر فيه الرمَّان
عيناي منه عينان

6. And the night for me is two nights,
Woe to my passionate heart,

٦. والليل عندِي ليلان
يا ويحَ قلبي الهيمان

7. Ensnared by gazelles,
Between the twists so enchanting,

٧. تصيدته الغزلان
بين اللوى فعسفان

8. And its words the eyelids,
Like what's in the eyelids,

٨. وكلمته الأجفان
بمثل ما في الأجفان

9. And it travels in litters,
Poetry is a tempting rope,

٩. واقتاده بأرسان
الشعر حبلٌ فتان

10. And the difference in it is clear,
Like guidance among error,

١٠. والفرق فيه قد بان
مثل الهدى في الطغيان

11. Where is the path of tranquility?
Shall I pursue the mounts of Riyan?

١١. أين طريق السلوان
ألردف عبل ريان

12. In it are naqah and nu'man trees,
And a slender waist thirsty,

١٢. فيه النَّقا والنعمان
والخصر واهٍ ظمآن

13. Eyes disappear in it,
As if it were in the sand dunes,

١٣. تغيب فيه العينان
كأنه في الأعكان

14. A secret covered by oblivion,
And a slender figure of delight,

١٤. سرّ طواه نسيان
والقدّ لدن نشوان

15. Soft and in it is twisting,
How strange O slender-waisted!

١٥. لين وفيه ليَّان
واعجباً يا غطفان

16. Sweet like sugarcane,
Who will save my infatuated heart?

١٦. حلون مثل المرَّان
مَنْ لفؤادِي الولهان

17. Deprived of my sleep and tooth,
Robbing the sleep of those awake,

١٧. أرق جفني وسنان
ينهب نوم السهران

18. Solitary in times,
Like Ahmad among people,

١٨. منفرد في الأزمان
كأحمد في الأعيان

19. Judge of judges, helper,
When time passes away,

١٩. قاضي القضاة المعوان
على الزمان إذا مان

20. Yes, refuge for those who pine,
Dazzlingly pure and open,

٢٠. نعم ملاذ اللهفان
أبلج طهر الأردان

21. From the filth of streams,
No milking or complaint,

٢١. من دنس الأدران
لا ضرع ولا وان

22. Exhausted by the eminent,
In generosity and benevolence,

٢٢. أتعبه ذو الشان
في الكرم والإحسان

23. Indeed the chief is tired,
For giving me comfort are two seas,

٢٣. إن الرئيس تعبان
لراحتيه بحران

24. And he said against the register,
The clouds frown,

٢٤. وقال ضدّ سجلان
جم الغمام الهتَّان

25. Other than that Omnipotent,
So the hanging clouds drizzled,

٢٥. من دون ذاك الإمكان
فالطّلّ رشح البحران

26. And the lightning is the fire of kindling,
O worker in the bow-curves!

٢٦. والبرق نار الشنان
يا معملاً بالقيعان

27. Every pillar claims,
Cutting the thread of darkness,

٢٧. كل أمون مدعان
تقطع خيط الظلمان

28. So he protected with his armor,
And floated around those domains,

٢٨. لذ بحماه القصَّان
وطفْ بتلك الأركان

29. And dwelled in the branches of Tuhla,
And call upon the generous awake,

٢٩. واسكن فروع ثهلان
وادْع كريماً يقظان

30. From blame the lazy,
And to the destitute hastening,

٣٠. عن الملام كسلان
وللعفاة عجلان

31. And with praise satisfied,
While towards it hungry,

٣١. وبالثناء شبعان
وهو إليه جوعان

32. Singing while causing poverty to the beautiful,
Like a sinner in April,

٣٢. يغني ويضني الجوان
كفاجر في نيسان

33. His words and clouds,
And his wisdom that of Luqman,

٣٣. ألفاظه وسحبان
وحكمه ولقمان

34. And his glory that of Keywan,
Among the stars brought together,

٣٤. ومجده وكيوان
بين النجوم إلفان

35. None differed in this pair,
And his wealth is declining,

٣٥. لم يختلف في ذا اثنان
وماله في خذلان

36. His two hands have killed him,
His purses like shrouds,

٣٦. قد قتلَته كفان
أكياسه كالأكفان

37. These are his good gifts,
No narrowness in purpose,

٣٧. هذي العطايا الحسان
لا جفنة في عنان

38. Surpassing loyalty of the two
lovers,

٣٨. فاق وفاء القينان
شيوخهم والشبان

39. Elders and youth alike,
Like the sea between gulfs,

٣٩. كالبحر بين الخلجان
والليث بين الذئبان

40. And the lion between two wolves,
The two are equal in horsemanship,

٤٠. سيَّان شأو الفرسان
حيث العلوم ميدان

41. Where knowledge is a field,
None run its like in falsehood,

٤١. جريُ سواه بهتان
والعدوُ معه عدوان

42. And the enemy with it is aggression,
Of a pen in eloquence,

٤٢. ذو قلم في التبيان
بادِي السنا والبرهان

43. Showing the brilliance and proof,
From it the devil flees,

٤٣. يفرُّ عنه الشيطان
معلّم من خَفَّان

44. Taught by Khefaf,
Fierceness of Hazbar Gouthan,

٤٤. بأس هزبر غوثان
وجود غيم ملآن

45. And generosity of a rain-filled cloud,
Whether harsh or soft,

٤٥. إذا قسا وإذا لان
وكلّ شيء إدمان

46. And everything is habitual,
Its songbirds like betrayers,

٤٦. طروسه كالغدران
وخطه كالريحان

47. And its writing like basil,
And its words like coral,

٤٧. ولفظه كالمرجان
لفظ عليّ التبيان

48. The words of the eloquent Ali,
Not exhausted by minds,

٤٨. ما ظمئته الأذهان
لا إنسها ولا الجان

49. Neither humans nor jinn,
Were it not for piety and faith,

٤٩. لولا التقى والإيمان
لقيل فيه قرآن

50. It would be said about him Quran,
Woe to that man!

٥٠. إيهٍ فذاك الإنسان
إنسان كل إنسان

51. A man like every man,
Verily, the soft clouds

٥١. إنَّ الغمام المنَّان
يجودنا في الأحيان

52. Reward us sometimes,
While your face frowns,

٥٢. ووجهه كالغضبان
وأنتَ دون إبَّان

53. Without discrimination,
Always facing Judham,

٥٣. دائم صوب جذلان
ما المنعمان سيَّان

54. The two bountiful are not equal,
Almost overwhelmed us is that flood,

٥٤. كادَ نداك الطوفان
يعطي العطا من لا كان

55. He gives gifts to those who have nothing,
All people are two guests,

٥٥. كل الأنام ضيفان
نزَّاعهم والقطَّان

56. Their quarrel is that of the weaver,
What is it to you, O eminent one?

٥٦. ما لثراك أكنان
رفقاً لشدّ ما هان

57. Gently, for the sake of the degraded,
Yours is the caroled praise,

٥٧. لكَ الثناء المرنان
بين حداة الركبان

58. Among the outstanding riders,
Ma'n grows white hair,

٥٨. يشيب معن شيبان
ويجدع ابن جدعان

59. And Ibn Jad'an becomes bald,
Were it not for your heavy downpour,

٥٩. لولا عطاك الطنان
به دمشق تزدان

60. With which Damascus is adorned,
It would be like some of the towns,

٦٠. كانت كبعض البلدان
لا عَلمٌ ولا بان

61. No banner or structure,
Though in it are inhabitants,

٦١. مع أنَّ فيها سكان
مرعى ولا كالسعدان

62. Pasture but not like as-Sa'dan,
Surrounded by as-Sa'dan,

٦٢. يكتنفاه السعدان
سرّ زكا وإعلان

63. Source of purity and declaration,
Not a secret we conceal,

٦٣. ما لسناه كتمان
صبح أضاء الأكوان

64. A morning that illuminated the cosmos,
The two ages praise him,

٦٤. يثني عليه العصران
من معشر ذوي شان

65. From the group of eminent figures,
A perfumer of turned up noses,

٦٥. شمّ الأنوف غرَّان
مجتمعين وحدان

66. Gathered together as one,
They took the place of the Jinn,

٦٦. حلوا محلّ الجان
من الكرام الشجعان

67. Among the brave nobles,
They prospered and the two roots thrived,

٦٧. طابوا وطابَ الأصلان
مخاثراً وألبان

68. Vying in glory and whiteness,
Their children and boys,

٦٨. أبناؤهم والولدان
مثل كعوب العيدان

69. Like stars of astrology,
Their destinies in lands,

٦٩. أقدارهم في أوطان
لها البروج جدران

70. For which the celestial spheres are walls,
And rivers are neighbors,

٧٠. والنيرات جيران
يكاد يأتي العطشان

71. The thirsty almost climbs
Pegs to reach the clouds,

٧١. إلى السحاب أشطان
يا شارباً بأثمان

72. O you who drinks for prices,
From one who knew and knew him well,

٧٢. من عرفه والعرفان
مدحاً يحلّي الآذان

73. Praise that adorns the ears,
When time is treacherous,

٧٣. حيث الزمان خوَّان
ووجهه كالصوَّان

74. And his face frowns,
Selling ones like me for free,

٧٤. يبيع مثليَ مجَّان
والشعر بين الخلان

75. And poetry between the two is
Like the sun between the blind,

٧٥. كالشمس بين العميان
تمل مدحاً قد زان

76. You have tired of praised embellished,
The garden of the Exalted with universes,

٧٦. روض العلى بأكوان
شقائِقاً وحوذان

77. With poppies and lilies,
What can the eloquent poet say?

٧٧. ما لفصيح ذبيان
شقيقه في النعمان

78. Whose companion is luxury,
Serving some youths,

٧٨. خدمة بعض الغلمان
نظّم فيك ديوان

79. Composed about you a diwan,
In every excellent letter,

٧٩. في كلِّ حرفٍ حسَّان
وكلّ بيتٍ سلمان

80. And every verse of well-being,
And congratulated the Feast of Satisfaction,

٨٠. واهنأ بعيد الرضوان
وانْحر ضحاياكَ الآن

81. And slaughter your offerings now,
Enemies and a sacrifice,

٨١. أعادِياً وقربان
وابْقَ فكلُّنا فان

82. And remain for we all will perish,
Of power and authority,

٨٢. ذا قوّة وسلطان
لا تخش ضدّ معيان

83. Do not fear opposing groups,
Scheming like foxes,

٨٣. يكيد كيد السَّرحان
إنَّ النجوم أعوان

84. Verily the stars are allies,
For you are the most high and victorious,

٨٤. لك العلى والرجحان
وللأنام النقصان

85. And for the people is loss,
As long as in it is a scale,

٨٥. ما دام فيها ميزان
