1. I seek Allah's forgiveness, I have no money or children
I grieve for him when the soil covers my body

2. I eschewed staying in this world even if my state improved
How could that be when my lot is nothing but misery?

3. My sword has rusted while I have strips of land under the soil
Truly the soil strips all rusty swords

4. No shame in my manners if I don't attain office
Rather the shame is in my time and my country

5. These are my words and this is my lot, how wonderful
That I have a wealth of words and poverty of hands

6. The human being's eyes, suffering raised him
Yet man was created to endure adversity

7. I do not wonder at a time from which I suffered agony
But I wonder at a rival who melted from envy

8. His feelings boil with rage at me yet
By God, he does not cross my mind or my thoughts

9. Who will provide me company in the bitterness of calamity
A generous Lord who will suffice me the company of my repulsion

10. The life of each man is a prison of his afflictions
So I wonder at the seeker of lengthy imprisonment and suppression

11. As for worries, it is a sea whose abundant foam I traversed
Do you not see the excessive foam above my head?

12. And I lived between the days alone
And there is much benefit in living alone

13. I will leave alone in the dust tomorrow
Even if my number amongst mankind multiplies

14. Of no use to me is abundance in living or hardship
If my Lord the Unique, the Absolute does not shelter me

15. O gatherer of money, life is fleeting
So be miserly with your money however you want or be generous

16. And o mighty one, wonder weaves its web around his sight
Remember your humiliation under the soil and comply

17. They said so-and-so has risen in rank today
I said it will bring him down to meet tomorrow

18. How many have spread their carpets relying on nights
To their hopes, but the turtledoves called, enough

19. And ones extending their hands authoritatively and all-powerfully
While the arrival of death is closer than the water they drink

20. How much the days have changed buildings and their inhabitants
With no pillar for aid and no pillar for support

21. What used to have support of the highest is gone
And the house of the highest is gone, even the support

22. Blessed is God―how many times its traps are encountered
By these stars against those who are distant and remote

23. The stars run to meet our turtledoves faster
And they hasten from meeting them for a period of time

24. The divine decree must dip its bucket
Into the essence of the stalwart from it or the lion's guts

25. I wondered at one hopeful for longevity though
That which makes one hopeless has made him hopeless

26. The night and dawn pull our souls
To the soil forcibly like no ropes made of palm fiber can pull

27. These are perplexing wonders that confuse the soul
And idle the mind from awareness into unconsciousness

28. I have no secret on a day whose pleasures I attained
And part of the body has melted away with it

29. I have become unable to endure the living of the indolent
Nor do I cast an ambitious glance to high ranks

30. My body is willingly inclining to my grave
So why would its willful incline to elevation please me?

31. Do not be deceived by the sweet nectar of life you sip
For what poison did that sweet nectar contain?

32. Do not consider a worldly brother who is at ease with it
And do not blame a destitute depressed brother

33. If you find the people swindling in a country
Then say, “You are in the right, away from the country”

34. I will advise you advice―if you follow it―
What a path to the heights it will reveal

35. Angering yourself over what you are doing
Is pleasing your Master―so anger it and do not transgress
