1. From the bearers of knowledge of past eras
Verily details have been gathered in sentences

2. United in the eminent youth, no wonder
If God unites all people in one man

3. The judge of judges whose exploits
Have walked unmatched but by parables

4. The beauty of the one whose excellences on earth
Did not cease to adorn its horizons, the beauty of religion and state

5. Who spread knowledge after collectiveness and who
Brought together heights while being forbearing like a camel

6. By whom times were set right and moderated
For people before the sun descended in Aries

7. If its rising graced his perfection with nobility
No adverse fortunes from Saturn would oppose him

8. As for Damascus, it has won what it hoped for
Of auspicious fortune or fulfilled hopes

9. So congratulations, for its ruler is vigilant
Through knowledge, ruling not through striving and cunning

10. If only Ibn Idris met Ibn al-Durus there
He would fill the heart of the mother with flowing tears

11. If only early judges returned to what they lost
Of fields for the grazing pen honored by the reed-pen

12. How clear is the rule through the imam, the guide
Learned, wearing forbearance, all-encompassing

13. Gentle to all creation, fierce in might, protecting him
As if he were honesty between easy and difficult

14. I wish if there was youthfulness in him from the crescent
It would never have risen with disconnected good fortune

15. With hands open, not concealed
And not distant from the noble traits

16. Entrusted with purifying matters, his will
Is lofty, neither wavering nor neglectful

17. Knowledge adorns his eyes; he carried all
Darkness and protected them from sleepiness in stillness

18. He never wore the garb of scholars, expanding it
Until it was like the expanse of whiteness in garments

19. He has traits at which pens bow down
As if they were pages in the early scripture

20. Ask his knowledge about veiled mysteries
And do not ask about encompassing qualities

21. If only al-Ta’i saw their theater of nobilities
He would say “neither my she-camel nor my supplies are here”

22. And logic, if al-Fakhr wanted its extremity
He would spend the night confused, complaining of cramps

23. And eloquence would cower before his humility
Even if meteors descended onto him, they would not reach

24. His conclusive words please the opponent’s ears
Until he would want a judgment not yet finished

25. His vigilant conscience and thought guiding it said
The authenticity of opinion protected me from error

26. And it recited, while Syria was its stage
“The highest kingdom is what is built on hills”

27. And it invalidated in religion heretical books
For every coat of mail is a book presented beforehand

28. It sealed the egg of Islam and ascertained
In the nest of its pens during the momentous event

29. How many seekers of knowledge it surpassed
Like the surpassing of effort by the guide over the young

30. If an account was narrated to a transmitter who knows him
He would make it sweeter with refinement or more fruitless with barrenness

31. When the voice of one healthy and praising him sang
It went in the morning while protecting him from intoxication like a drunkard

32. Oh why is the abode of poetry full of praise from me
When it was more desolate than ruins with owls

33. Oh you who saw his open generosity overflowing
And they turned the wood to be submerged in the sand

34. My poetry folded up its accustomed praise of you
For I did not begin with descriptions of youth or love poems

35. That is because I have an eye prepared for love
Created for passion when humans were created in haste

36. I perceive the lightning of the west of the lands when
Its gleams kindle embers in the darkness

37. And I gain consciousness with the inclination of youth
While bodies may gain health through illnesses

38. And I recall refined life and its conversations
When Egypt was my abode and my loved ones in it were my familiars

39. Alas! Your mention is sweeter in my mouth but neither
Your palms, nor the smooth-cheeked one are more precious to my kiss

40. People are busy in the pleasures of their worldly lives
While you are busy with virtue and all that is virtuous
