1. The reproachers came lightly
And we thirsted to meet you quickly

2. O one near to the lover, yet far
And a torment to the lover, yet delightful

3. And a gazelle to its onlookers, yet languid
Leaving the heart like tinder, ablaze

4. Patience was overcome by the passion of its glance
And two weak ones overcome one strong

5. And upon his cheeks a fire I saw
If I distracted myself from his love, miserable

6. O my intimate, leave me with him
For I am most deserving of his cheeks, pray

7. I know that for me from his radiance
There is an auspicious moon on his forehead

8. I know not when the scorpion of his temple arrived
The heart's journey in his love backfires

9. By my father, a branch pleating his cloak
From afar it came, coveting and craving

10. An orphan from the pearl of his smile, sweet
Traveling in its likeness, the right-minded go astray

11. With a smile that dazzles, he blinded my eyes
Despite that I lined them with my pearl

12. Sometimes in the wares of beauty he comes
Precious, and other times sugary

13. The temptation of beauty above his cheeks does not depart
It confused Qays’ perspective, right or left

14. I compose poetry and he smiles in wonder
And so he came with it, of precious things

15. Flourishing in singing his praises
And after praise, Qurashi

16. Blessed among Quraysh in Syria a branch
Abu Taheeya, most generous of the Bahnasi

17. The sun of the eminent, its benefits encompassed people
Both near and far from the lands and distant

18. And the generous, pure lineage, we were shaken
By him for favors, a branch most pure

19. So if a messenger of hope calls
The plenty of his doors calls a Khazraji

20. And if his voice gives drink to my plants
My praise smells good in both states, well-watered

21. How we traversed for him piety and intimacy
And found in both states a guardian

22. How much praise and passion for his eminence in eulogy
Good among all people and a station most high

23. And insights that give life, and indeed
I was granted the judgment of pottery in them, childish

24. Ascending in the sublime, a minister we witnessed
For our hopes, faithful, protecting

25. His benevolence said: congratulate an intimacy
And purification from him, for he was devout

26. Blessed after that a sun followed us
Praising his days, great and splendid

27. His sermon the positions of religion and life
As we may see, thus he was sufficient

28. About his right hand’s separating, so ask the entirety
You ask, and the tongue of truth will say “Ali”

29. O for him among the people a Qurashi lad
Who has spread good, a unifier, Umayyad

30. And a chief the people of purpose survived
For when the kings brought them near, rescued

31. And they saw his resolve for faith and life
Healing, fulfilling, wealthy, replenished

32. The caravans of his pens the day he memorized
And gifting on the path made smooth

33. You see the truth radiant like the dawn
And you see good like the clouds, well-watered

34. And you see generosity flowing with munificence
And the eloquence of his Arab steed

35. He protected my face from the people with hands
And hands that changed my lowly state, pitiful

36. So today and time for me are good
As if the happy one had been miserable

37. A paradise from Damascus we enjoy
And for us provision morning and evening

38. O generous one who hides his hands, if only
The chosen musk and dawn were hidden

39. Reforming the inward was your visit, and the outward
When you were hungry and bare

40. So remain however you wish, as you wish, hoped for
With overflowing blessings, fortunate, confidential

41. Praise meets you and grows more beautiful
As the meadows meet the first rains

42. Your happy face prayed, it was not
A protector of Egypt through prayer, miserable

43. You between the nobles are like pure gold
No wonder an Egyptian sees you

44. You are most deserving as controller and advisor
The kings brought you near, rescued

45. You oversee affairs, and God looks after you
So you remain both shepherd and flock

46. Blessed from you for leadership is one worthy
Abundant in merit, praise, and loyalty

47. The king recognized in him ancient lineage
Between his homelands, and a branch most high

48. And drew from his summit a star of insight
Rising in fortune morning and evening

49. Observing, wakeful over the kingdom, he knows
How to guide its hidden desires for him

50. If we want piety from him or generosity
We find in both states a guardian

51. Dazzling the beholders in insight and perspective
Blessed, splendid merit, most splendid

52. Bearing in the arenas of peace and war a shepherd
Who makes the devious time upright

53. A sweeping pen, if it traces a letter
The people praise his calligrapher’s pen

54. Budding branch, whenever it is shaken
The country’s wealth falls from it, harvested

55. O chief, time called for him loyalty
And hope said: spur on the steed!

56. For seekers your person remains succor
And a cloud for visitors, well-watered

57. His benevolence said: congratulate an intimacy
And purification from him, for he was devout
