1. The youthful era watered you, O abode of ruins,
With tears or blood from wounds still raw.

2. O Nile of Egypt, neither your nor my tears avail,
Since the covenants of loyalty are gone, neighbor and intimate.

3. When religion's standard, Prince al-Malik al-Kamil,
Meets adversity, he still smiles at men.

4. Possessor of wisdom, resolve, ready eloquence,
Knowledge, clemency, benevolence and generosity.

5. Horseman of the army, a title preceding him,
The line of verse, the standard preceding the flag.

6. Honor him and his father before him, for they
Have inherited noble traits—need I say more?

7. With them I gained victory in the war of my days.
So I dwell in a garden beneath the sword and the pen.
