من احس لي أهل القبور ومن رأى
O who feels for me the inhabitants of the graves, and sees them
بكى شجوه الإسلام من علمائه

لعمرك ما الدنيا بدار بقاء
By Your life, this world is no abode to stay
كل حياة إلى ممات
Every life leads to death
يا خليلي لا أذم زماني
My friend, I do not resent time
ولم أر ما يدوم له اجتماع
I have not seen an assembly last forever
تظل تفرح بالأيام تقطعها
Roses still smile when days pass by
وما الموت إلا رحلة غير أنها
Death is but a journey, except that it is
حلقت لحية موسى باسمه
Brothers in name, yet apart
الصمت في غير فكرة سهو
Silence without thought is error
حيل البلى تأتي على المحتال
The tricks of fate befall the trickster,
لقد هان على الناس
He who needs mankind is disdained
يا ابن عم النبي خير البريه
O son of the Prophet's cousin, best of creation
تولت جدة الدنيا
The world has become old
وكما تبلى وجوه في الثرى
As faces fade away inside the dust
لا تخضعن لمخلوق على طمع
Do not submit to any creature in greed
هو الله هو الله
He is Allah, He is Allah
وليس لمثلي بالملوك يدان
I chose to bear some humiliation for fear of all of it
يا رب أنت خلقتني
O Lord, You created me
لا زلت من غنم إلى راحة
Still you move from hardship to comfort
أرى قوما وجوههم حسان
I see a people whose faces are beautiful
أيا ذوي الوخامة
Oh censurers abounding in blame!
حجبوها عن الرياح لأني
They veiled her from the winds because I
فتا ما استفاد المال إلا أفاده
Never once has money benefited a youth
لئن عدت بعد اليوم إني لظالم
If I return after today, I will be unjust
موالينا إذا احتاجوا إلينا
When our loved ones need us
كل شيء فيه موعظة
Everything has lessons
لا تفخرن بلحية
Do not boast of a beard
فديتك تجميش العجوز بلية
Your folly is the torment of the aged woman
الحمد والنعمة لك
Praise and bounty are for You
أضحت قبورهم من بعد عزهم
Their graves after their glory
قد كنت صنت دموعي قبل فرقته
I used to restrain my tears before we parted
أأخي من عشق الرئاسة خفت أن
Shall I call him my brother, he who loves supremacy? I fear
فقصر ما ترى بالصبر حقا
So be patient, for patience dispels all that seems long
وما زلت تنعى برجم الظنون
Still you are decried by the casting of suspicions,
ولما استقلوا بأثقالهم
When they shouldered their burdens
ألا يا عتبة الساعه
Oh Utba, this moment
قد دعوناه نائيا فوجدنا
We called to him from afar, and found
للمنون دائرات
The circle of death
إني أعوذ من التي شعفت
I seek refuge from her who has made
إذا ما استجزت الشك في بعض ما ترى
When doubt afflicts you about some of what you see,
بكت عيني على عيسى بن جعفر
My eyes weep for Isa son of Ja'far
وإذا واش وشى بي عندها
Roses are red, violets are blue, I will not translate, so nothing to you.
تفديك نفسي من كل ما كرهت
My soul redeems you from all that your soul detests
ألا إن ظبيا للخليفة صادني
Indeed, a gazelle belonging to the Caliph confronted me
مرت اليوم شاطرة
Passed today, a clever one
فاجسر فإن أخا اللذات من جسرا
So dare! for the brother of joys is he who dares
لا ترقدن لعينك السهر
Do not sleep for your eyes' wakefulness
اصبر لدهر نال من
Be patient with time that has passed
عاذلي في المدام غير نصيح
Rebuke me not for the wine, though no advice-giver be I
أبيت مسهدا قلقا وسادي
I stayed awake restless on my pillow
شيم فتحت من المجد ما قد
Roses have opened from glory what was
الشيب كره وكره أن يفارقني
Gray hair is a nuisance but leaving me would be worse
أرى الأمس قد فاتني رده
I see that yesterday has passed me by
هن ينتقيننا
One by one
يا عجبا ما عجبت يا عجبا
Oh, how strange, I'm amazed, oh how strange
عذب الماء وطابا
Sweet is the water, and delight
ولقد طربت إليك
I longed for you until I was in pain
بينا الفتى مرح الخطى فرحا بها
While the youth walked with joyous steps
ولا خير فيمن لا يوطن نفسه
No good is he who does not make his soul
ألا من لي بأنسك يا أخيا
Oh who will give me your company, my brother
نام الخلي لأنه خلو
The deserted abode is named so because it is devoid
رب باك للموت يبكى عليه
Many weep for death while mourners weep o’er them;
إنما الذنب على من جناه
The sin is only upon he who commits it
إذا ما الشيء فات فخل عنه
When a thing is past and away from thee
أيا من بين باطية ودن
O you who are between youthfulness and maturity

You leaned towards this world as you saw it

الهرص داء قد أضربمن
Greed is an affliction that has spread
هم القاضي بيت يطرب
The judge's worries disturb his home
أيا عجبا للناس في طول ما سهوا
Oh, the wonder of people and their heedlessness,
الموت لا والدا يبقي ولا ولدا
Death spares no father, nor son
من سابق الدهر كبا كبوة
He who races too fast ahead of fate

Fear and hope are stirred when
ضربتني بكفها بنت معن
The daughter of Ma'n struck me with her palm
إن المليك رآك أحسن
The King saw you as the finest
يا ابن عم النبي سمعا وطاعه
O cousin of the Prophet, hearing and obedience,
حتى متى ذو التيه في تيهه
How long, O lost in bewilderment, in bewilderment of yours
خبروني أن من ضرب السنه
They told me that as the years pass by
سقيت الغيث يا قصر السلام
You were watered with rain, O palace of peace
المرء دنيا نفسه
A man's world is his soul;
ولربما حذر الفتى
Sometimes the young man is wary
هو التنقل من يوم إلى يوم
It is the passage from one day to the next
إن قدر الله أمرا كان مفعولا
If Allah decrees a matter, it is made so,
حب الرئاسة أطغى من على الأرض
The love of leadership has overwhelmed those on earth
لاتك في كل هوا تنهمك
Do not despair for every passion that consumes you
ستباشر الأجداث وحدك
You will face hardships alone,

إذا قل مال المرء قل صديقه

O accumulator of wealth, time deceives him,
لا تعجبن من الأيام والدول

يقول أناس لو نعت لنا الهوى
Some say, if only love's pain I could portray!

The nights and days urged us on insistently

لله در أبيك أية ليلة
Oh God, how precious is your father's home on the night
الليل شيب والنهار كلاهما
The night grew gray and the day, too, grew old,

Your longing reached me from the land of Iraq
نسيت منيتي وخدعت نفسي
I forgot my mortality and fooled myself
لك الحمد يا ذا العرش يا خير معبود
You deserve all praise, O Lord of the Throne, O Best One to Worship
ألا نادت هرقلة بالخراب
Alas Hiraqlah cries out with ruin
أكثر موسى غيظ حساده

The clothes of one who died are for his heir

You've lost all sense of what is good and fair,
عليك بأوساط كل الأمور
Stick with moderation in all affairs,

Behold! A gazelle of the Caliph assailed me,
يا من تبغى زمنا صالحا
O you who yearn for righteous times,
قولا لمن يرتجي الحياة أما
Tell those who hope for life, surely
من لعبد أذله مولاه
What can the lowly servant do when rejected by his Master?
نفسي بشيء من الدنيا معلقة
My soul is attached to something of this world
يا خاطب الدنيا إلى نفسها
O suitor of this world for yourself,
صحا قلبي وراع إلي عقلي
My heart is awake, my mind is attentive to me,
عتب ما للخيال
Reproach not the phantom of fantasy
وما الفضل في هذا الزمان لأهله
The virtuous in this age get no regard,
إني أتيتك للسلام
I came to you seeking peace
إسمع إلى الأحكام تحملها
Listen to the judgments carried
الناس إخوة نعمة
People are brothers in God's blessing
ألا شافع عند الخليفة يشفع
Is there no intercessor with the Caliph who might intercede
ما طار طير فارتفع
No bird has flown and risen high
يا بني النقص والغير
O children of imperfection and defect
أمسي وأصبح من تذكركم
Daybreak and dusk I'm reminded of you all
أنعى يزيد بن منصور إلى البشر
I lament for Yazid ibn Mansur among humankind
من صدق الحب لأحبابه
He who is true in his love for his loved ones
يا خاضب الشيب بالحناء تستره
O you who dye your grey hair with henna to conceal it
بدني ناحل وصبري بدين
My body is frail, my patience weak
إحذر من الدنيا مغبتها
Beware the world and its deceit,
قد صار يحسدني من كان يعذرني
Those who used to excuse me now envy me,
نعل بعثت بها لتلبسها
A sandal I sent for you to wear
أكل طول الزمان أنت إذا
Ever since time began when I come to you in need, you say "tomorrow."
يعمر بيت بخراب بيت
A house lives on while another decays
على سرعة الشمس في مرها
Like the swift course of the sun in its glory,
إذا ما رأيتم ميتين جزعتم
When you see two dead ones, you are sad
صفحت برغمي عنك صفح ضرورة
I forgave you against my will, a forgiveness of necessity
والله لا أرجو سوا
By Allah, I hope for none but You,
إن السلامة أن ترضى بما قضيا
To be safe is to accept what's been decreed
أسعداني بالدمع يا عينيا
My eyes have brought me joy with tears,
أيا نفس مهما لم يدم فذريه
O soul, no matter how short life is, so leave it,
إن كنت تبصر ما عليك وما لكا
If you see what is upon you and what is for you
لشتان ما بين المخافة والأمن
How different is fear from safety,
يا للمنايا ويا للبين والحين
O death, O separation, O the present moment!
تزود من الدنيا مسرا ومعلنا
He prepared for life with ease and ostentation
يا أيها المتسمن
O you who are absorbed in worldly pleasures
أبنيت دون الموت حصنا
You built a fortress against death,
سبق القضاء بكل ما هو كائن
Destiny has ordained all that will be
طال شغلي بغير ما يعنيني
My occupation with what does not concern me has lasted long,
كأني بالتراب عليك ردما
As though with dust I see you heaped,
يا نفس ما هو إلا صبر أيام
O soul, this is nothing but the patience of days
أيا رب يا ذا العرش أنت رحيم
O Lord, O Owner of the Throne, You are Merciful
من سالم الناس سلم
Whoever greets people stays safe
سميت نفسك بالكلام حكيما
You name yourself wise in words
ما حال من سكن الثرى ما حاله
What is the state of one who dwells in the earth? What is his state?
الحمد لله كل زائل بال
Praise be to Allah, everything perishes
ألا يا أيها البشر
O people!
قطعت منك حبائل الآمال
I have severed the ropes of hope from you
الموت بين الخلق مشترك
Death amongst people is common
لا تنس واذكر سبيل من هلكا
Do not forget, and remember the path of those who perished
ألا رب أحزان شجاني طروقها
Oh, how many sorrows have saddened me, their beginnings have pained me,
خليلي إن الهم قد يتفرج
My friend, worries will surely subside,
خير الرجال رفيقها
The best of men are her companion,
متى تتقضى حاجة المتكلف
When will the needy ostentatious one be satisfied,
الشيء محروص عليه إذا امتنع
The coveted thing is guarded, when it is denied
أتجمع مالا لا تقدم بعضه
You hoard wealth without spending some
نسأل الله بما يقضي الرضى
We ask Allah for what brings satisfaction
سترى بعد ما ترى
You will see after what you see
الله يحفظ لا الحراسه
God protects, not guards
اشتد بغي الناس في الأرض
The people's wrongdoing intensified on earth
يا أيهذا الذي ستنقله
O you who will be carried away from your family and children by the days,
كل حي إلى الممات يصير
Every living being will come to death
إن للدهر فاعلمن عثارا
Know that fate ever plays tricks and ruin brings,
لا تفرحن بما ظفرت به
Do not rejoice in what you have gained
كل يوم يأتي برزق جديد
Each day brings sustenance anew
لا والد خالد ولا ولد
No immortal father, no undying son
قل للجليد المنيع لست من الدنيا
Tell the impervious ice, you have no real firmness or strength,
المرء في تأخير مدته
A man's procrastination
كم غافل أودى به الموت
How many a heedless man has death destroyed,
قد رأيت القرون قبل تفانت
You've seen eras before this fade away
إذا أنت لاينت التي خشنت لانت
If you are gentle to one who was harsh, he will become gentle.
إلى كم إذا ما غبت ترجى سلامتي
How long when I am absent is my safety hoped for,
من يعش يكبر ومن يكبر يمت

عجبت للنار نام راهبها

لعظيم من الأمور خلقنا
We were created for a grand purpose
هو الموت فاصنع كلما أنت صانع
It is death, so do all that you can do
من لم يعظه التجريب والأدب
He who is not admonished by experience and literature
عتابة النفس كاعب شكله
Complaining soul is like a clown
على رسول الله مني السلام
Peace be upon the Messenger of Allah from me,
رحلت عن الربع المحيل قعودي
I left behind the unenduring abode to one with armies and hosts,
ألا قل لابن معن ذا
Oh say to the son of Ma'n, he who
يا عتب هجرك مورث الأدواء
O reproach, your abandonment inherits illnesses,
بكيت على الشباب بدمع عيني
With tears from my eyes, I wept for my youth
بليت بنفسي شر نفس رأيتها
I was afflicted by my own soul, the evilest of souls I saw,
هززتك هزة السيف المحلى
I shook you like the drawing of a glittering sword,
فما الدار فيما بيننا ببعيدة
The house between us is not far
حتى متى أنا في حل وترحال
How long will I wander aimlessly
ليس للمتعب الكادح من دن
The weary toiler has no luxury in life
خذ من يقينك ما تجلو الظنون به
Take from your certainty what dispels doubts,
تصبر عن الدنيا ودع كل تائه
Turn away from this world and leave behind all that misleads you,
لم تنتقصني إذ أسأت وزدتني
When I did wrong, You did not lessen me,
يا قرة العين كيف أمسيت
O comfort of my eyes, how have you become
اتق الله بجهدك
Fear God with all your might
من لقلب متيم مشتاق
Who is there for a yearning heart that longs
ما يدفع الموت أرصاد ولا حرس
What wards off death, no guards nor armaments,
بنى معن ويهدمه يزيد
Ma'an builds and Yazid demolishes
ألا كل مولود فللموت يولد
Alas! Every being that is born is destined to die
ألا إن لي يوما أدان كما دنت
Alas! I have a day when I will be judged as I have judged
ما لي رأيتك راكبا لهواكا
I've never seen you riding your whims,
إذا اغتاظ لم يقلق وإن صل لم يحم
When angered, he was not flustered, and when wronged, he bore no grudge.
ستنقطع الدنيا بنقصان ناقص
The world will cease with the loss of one who is lost
ألا في سبيل الله ما فات من عمري
Alas! Of my life what's passed in God's cause
خليلي إن الهم قد يتفرج
My friend, worries will surely pass
لكل أمر جرى فيه القضا سبب
For every matter whose fate has run its course, there is a cause,
مات والله سعيد بن وهب
Sa'eed ibn Wahb died, by Allah
أحمد الله على كل حال
I praise God in every state
ألا نحن في دار قليل بقائها
Are we not in an abode, short is its duration,
دار وعورة سهلها
My land of steep hills
خير أيام الفتى يوم نفع
The best of a young man's days is the day he benefits others,
هل الدهر إلا ليلة ثم يومها
Is time anything but a night then a day following it,
ما لِلمَقابِرِ لا تُجيب
What ails the graves, they answer not
ما أقطع الآجال للآمال
How the days cut short all hopes,
ألا رب ذي أجل قد حضر
Alas! Many are those whose time is up
ألا إن أبقى الذخر خير تنيله
Behold! The best provision is lasting piety
يا رب رزق قد أتى من سبب
O Lord of provision that came from a cause
اهرب بنفسك من دنيا مضللة
Flee with yourself from a deluded world
إن القريرة عينه عبد
The servant with enlightened eyes is Abd,
قل لذي الوجه الطرر
Say to the one of sullen face
كسلني اليأس منك عنك فما
Despair has made me languid about you, so no more
يا أحسن الناس ريقا غير مختبر
O fairest of people in appearance, not tested
في عداد الموتى وفي ساكني الدن
Among the dead and among the living of this world,
وإنما العلم من قياس
Knowledge comes from inference, evidence and report
أعلمت عتبة أنني
I made Utbah aware that I
يا ذا الذي يقرء في كتبه
O you who reads in his books
كل حياة فلها مدة
Every life has an end,
لن تقوم الدنيا بمر الأهله
The world will not be set right by the passing of the crescents,
يا خليلي من بني شيبان
Oh my friend from the tribe of gray hair
أذل الحرص والطمع الرقابا
Greed and desire humble mankind,
لطرفها وهو مصروف كموقعه
Her gaze, though aimed away, strikes my heart
لقد طال يا دنيا إليك ركوني
For long, O world, my repose in you persisted
أغرك أني صرت في زي مسكين
Did it make you arrogant that I became dressed in the garb of a pauper
ما أغفل الناس عن بلائي
How the people neglect my afflictions,
ماذا يفوز الصالحون به
What do the righteous gain
قل لأهل القبور كيف وجدتم
Say to the people of the graves, how did you find
يا راكب الغي غير متئد
O rider of folly, not guided aright
وإذا صفى ودي له
When my affection for him is pure
الحرص لؤم ومثله الطمع
Greed is malice and so is covetousness
إذا ما كنت متخذا خليلا
If you seek a friend, then seek one of noble virtue,
سهوت وغرني أملي
I was deluded by my hopes,
بخ بخ يا عتب من مثلكم
Oh reproach, oh shame, who is like you
عامل الناس برأي رفيق
Treat people gently
وكلفتني ما حلت بيني وبينه
You commanded me with what stood between me and it
المرء منظور إليه
A man is regarded
كم نعمة لا يستقل بشكرها
How many blessings, for which thanks cannot suffice,
ولا زوردية تزهو بزرقتها
Without turquoise's pride of hue
أيا غمي لغمك يا خليلي
Oh my sorrow, for your sorrow, oh my friend
ألا إنما الإخوان عند الحقائق
Alas! Brothers are only during adversities,
الله هون عندك الدنيا
God made this world contemptible to you
هدايا الناس بعضهم لبعض
Gifts from one person to another
تخفف من الدنيا لعلك أن تنجو
Lighten your burden of worldly things, perhaps you may be saved
والله والله ما أبالي متى
By God, by God, I care not when
سأصبر جهدي لما أسمع
I will be patient to the utmost of my ability
أخ طالما سرني ذكره
A brother whose memory oft brought me delight
يا علي بن ثابت أين أنتا
O Ali son of Thabit, where are you
كفاك عن الدنيا الذميمة مخبرا
Enough of telling me about this base world,
ليس يرجو الله إلا خائف
None hopes in God except one who fears
من كان يزعم أن سيكتم حبه
Whoever claims that he can conceal his love
رأيتك فيما يخطئ الناس تنظر
I saw you looking where people err
وإني لمعذور على طول حبحا
I'm excused for loving her so long
أن بالله وحده وإليه
I believe in God alone, and to Him
يا ناسي الموت ولم ينسه
O you who forget death though death forgets you not,
قد مات خلي وإنسي
My friend and companion are dead
لأبكين على نفسي وحق ليه
I will weep for myself, and I have the right to do so,
رزأتك يا هذا فهنت عليكا
I despised you, Oh you, so you weakened me,
أشهد بالله وآياته
I bear witness to God and His signs
رويدك يا إنسان لا أنت تقفز
Slow down, o human, you do not jump
إن دارا نحن فيها لدار
Indeed it is a house we are in
نسيت الموت فيما قد نسيت
I forgot death in what I forgot
رأيت الشيب يعدوكا
I saw old age rushing at you
أنت محتاج فقير أبدا
You are forever needy and poor
جمعت من الدنيا وحزت ومنيتا
You have amassed from this life and hoarded greedily,
جمعوا فما أكلوا الذي جمعوا
They gathered but enjoyed not what they gathered
زاد حبي لقرب أهل المعاصي
My love for the sinners has grown
يا نفس أنى تؤفكينا
O soul, how long will you misguide me?
قل لمن ضن بوده
Tell the one who was stingy with his love
أصبحتُ والله في مضيق
I swear by God I'm in dire straits
قل للظباء بذي الأراك
Tell the gazelles in the land of Dhi al-Arayk
إن المحب إذا ترادف همه
When the lover is overwhelmed by cares,
كأنك قد جاورت أهل المقابر
You seem as though you've dwelt with those who lie in graves
ألا إنما الدنيا متاع غرور
Alas! Verily this world is but a fleeting delight,
إنا لفي دار تنغيص وتنكيد
We are in an abode of distress and affliction,
أشرب فؤادك بغضة اللذات
Imbibe your heart with hatred of pleasures,
غنيت عن الود القديم غنيتا
You have become independent of the old affection
لكم فجع الدهر من والد
How many a father has time aggrieved,
أجداده علموه في طفولته
His ancestors taught him in his childhood
أيا عجب الدنيا لعين تعجبت
Oh what a wonder the world is for an astonished eye!
أصبحت في دار بليات
I have come to dwell in the abode of woes
أرقيك أرقيك باسم الله أرقيكا
I heal you, I heal you in God's name, I heal you
كل على الدنيا له حرص
Everyone desires the life of this world
لو علم الناس كيف أنت لهم
If people knew how good you are to them
أرى الدنيا لمن هي في يديه
I see this world for whoever possesses it
ومن لي أن أبشك ما لدي
Oh, who will comfort me, my brother,
طول التعاشر بين الناس مملول
The length of socializing amongst people becomes burdensome
ما للفتى مانع من القدر
What can stop the fate of a young man,
قد رأيت الدنيا إلى ما تصير
I have seen the life and where it leads
يا طالب الحكمة من أهلها
O seeker of wisdom from its people
سبحان ربك ما أراك تتوب
Glory to your Lord, how long will you refuse to repent
عجبت لعمر الله من جار جارة
I'm amazed at the neighbor of a neighbor
أراك تراع حين ترى خيالي
I see you startled when you see my phantom
لله عاقبة الأمور جميعا
To Allah belong the outcomes of all affairs
ألا للموت كأس أي كاس
Alas, what a cup death is!
قل لليل والنهار اكتراثي
I care little for night or day,
الخير أفضل ما لزمتا
Good is best when you adhere
إذا نحن صدقناك
If we are truthful with you
لا يهنأ الأعداء عزل ابن هاشم
The foes rejoice not at the isolation of Hashim's son
لله در ذوي العقول المشعبات
Praise be to God, Lord of insightful minds
قد سمعنا الوعظ لوينفعنا
We've heard the sermons, if only they'd help us,
يا نفس أين أبي وأين أبو أبي
O soul, where is my father and where is my father's father
لو قيل للعباس يا ابن محمد
If it were said to al-Abbas, O son of Muhammad
هي النفس لا أعتاض عنها بغيرها
It is the soul I yearn for, nothing else
أرى الموت لي حيث اعتمدت كمينا
I see death lying in wait for me as an ambush
كفتني العناية من ثابت
Providence sufficed me from Thabit
خير سبيل المال تفريقه
The best way to spend money is to give it
أيها المبصر الصحيح السميع
O you who see clearly and hear perfectly
يا نفس إن الحق ديني
O soul, verily truth is my religion
داو بالرفق جراحات الخرق
Heal with gentleness the wounds of rupture,
قد شاب رأسي ورأس الحرص لم يشب
My hair has turned grey, yet greed's head shows no sign of grey
تبارك من فخري بأني له عبد
Blessed is He who boasts that I am His servant
قل لمن لست أسمي
Tell whoever asks my name
أين المفر من القضاء
Where can one flee from fate
إياك أعني يا ابن آدم فاستمع
I warn you, O son of Adam, so listen
إن أسوا يوم يمر عليا
The most miserable day that passes me by
النفس بالشيء الممنع مولعه
The soul craves forbidden things,
عاد لي من ذكرها نصب
The memory of her has brought me grief,
ما أنا إلا لمن بغاني
I am but for he who loves me
نموت جميعا كلنا غير ما شك
We all die, every one of us, without doubt
الناس يخدع بعضهم بعضا
People deceive each other
ما يرتجى بالشيء ليس بنافع
What is hoped for is not made useful by the thing itself
حلاوة عيشك ممزوجة
The sweetness of your living is mixed
أصابت علينا جودك العين يا عمر
Your generosity has been afflicted by the evil eye, O Omar
إنما الدنيا هبات
The world is but borrowed joys,
مؤاخاة الفتى البطر البطين
The friendship of an impetuous youth
من جعل الدهر على باله
Who made time the concern of his mind
أوالب أنت في العرب
Owalib, you are an Arab
إكره لغيرك ما لنفسك تكره
Do not impose on others what you dislike for yourself,
أبا غانم أما ذراك فواسع
O Abu Ghanim, though your abode is spacious,
عجبا عجبت لغفلة الباقينا
I'm amazed at the heedlessness of those remaining
ما أحسن الدنيا وإقبالها
How beautiful this life is and its prosperity,
لخير إمام قام من خير معشر
For the best imam who stood from the best tribe
لولا يزيد ابن منصور لما عشت
Were it not for Yazid son of Mansur, I would not have lived,
مسكين من غرت الدنيا بآماله
Wretched is he whom the life of this world has deceived with its hopes!
مات الخليفة أيها الثقلان
The caliph has died, O burdened ones
يا نفس قد مثلت حالى
Oh soul, for long have I portrayed to you
تمسكت بآمال
You clung to hopes
شغل المسكين عن تلك المحن
The poor man was distracted from those afflictions,
كم للحوادث من صروف عجائب
How many surprising events occur,
لطائر كل حادثة وقوع
For every bird an accident's occurrence is destined
سلام على أهل القبور الدوارس
Greetings to the dwellers of the whirling graves
أصبحت مغلوبا على عقلي
I have become overwhelmed by my own mind,
نعى نفسي إلي من الليالي
My soul mourned for me as the nights went by
أسرع في نقص امرئ تمامه
He hastens to expose a person's faults, though his own perfection is far away.
نغص الموت كل لذة عيش
Death has embittered every sweet life
من أجاب الهوى إلى كل ما يد
Whoever responds to passion in whatever
الله أكرم من يناجى
God honors whoever whispers to Him,
لهفي على الزمن القصير
My yearning for the fleeting time
هل على نفسه امرؤ محزون
Does a man grieve for his soul, knowing he'll soon be buried?
أنلهو وأيامنا تذهب
I play, yet our days pass away,
أهل التخلق لو يدوم تخلق
The noble who practice benevolence - if their benevolence were lasting -
لو أن عبدا له خزائن ما
If a slave had treasures all over
أين القرون بنو القرون
Where are the generations, sons of the generations,
تفكر قبل أن تندم
Think before you regret,
لكم فلتة لي قد وقى الله شرها
How many trials have I faced, but Allah protected me from their evil!
أنت المقابل والمدابر
You are the counterpart and the equal
بلوت إخاء الناس يا عمر كلهم
I have tested people's brotherhood, O my life, all of them
إن كان يعجبك السكوت فإنه
If silence pleases you, it has
سلم يا سلم ليس دونك ستر
O peace, there is no veil except you
أرقت وطار عن عيني النعاس
I was awake while the eyelids of others fell heavy with sleep,
ولقد تنسمت الرياح لحاجتي
I have breathed the winds for my needs,
من لم يذق لصبابة طعما
Whoever has not tasted the sweetness of youth
لله أنت على جفائك
For God's sake, you are unforgiving to me
طالما احلولى معاشي وطابا
For long my living was bliss and joy,
في كل أرض ترى من منطقي أثرا
In every land you see a trace of my rhetoric
أما والذي يحيى به ويمات
By Him who gives life and death
إن الحوادث لا محالة آتيه
The events will inevitably come
سلام على قبر النبي محمد
Peace be upon the grave of Prophet Muhammad
نهنه دموعك كل حي فان
Stop your tears, for all that lives must pass away
إياك والبغي والبهتان والغيبة
Beware of transgression, slander, gossip,
كم من سفيه غاظني سفها
How many a fool has vexed me with folly,
امهد لنفسك واذكر ساعة الأجل
Prepare yourself and remember the hour of death
بالله يا حلوة العينين زوريني
In God's name, O beauty of eyes, visit me
ألا ما لسيدتي ما لها
Oh, what is with my lady, what ails her?
ألم تر أن للأيام وقعا
Have you not seen that days have impact?
أنساك محياك المماتا
You forgot me, death erased you
رضيت لنفسك سوءاتها
You have accepted for yourself her wrongs,
كأن الموت قد نزلا
It is as if death has come down
عند البلى هجر الضجيع ضجيعه
When misfortune strikes, the sleeper is forsaken by his companion
قلب الزمان سواد رأسك أبيضا
Time has turned the blackness of your hair to white
المرء يخدعه مناه
Man is deceived by his desires,
جاء المشمر والأفراس يقدمها
The one with sleeves rolled up came, and his swift horses
يا عتب ما شاني وما شانك
O Beauty, what is my state and what is yours?
إمام الهدى أصبحت بالدين معنيا
You have become the imam of guidance through religion, O meaningful one,
عجبا لأرباب العقول
How strange are those with sharp minds
لجت عتيبة في هجري فقلت لها
Utaybah turned away from me, so I said to her,
آمنت بالله وأيقنت
I have believed in God and become certain,
ماذا يصير إليك يا أرض
What will happen to you, O land
إلى الله كل الأمر في الخلق كله
To God belongs all command in all creation
كأن قد عجل الأقوام غسلك
It seems the people hastened your burial
ألا أرى للمرء أن يأمن الدهرا
Alas, should man feel safe from fate for long?
وكأن من دفنته أيد في الثرى
As if the one his hands buried in the dust
ليس للإنسان إلا ما رزق
Man has naught but what he is given,
قل لأهل الإكثار والإقلال
Tell those who hoard and those who squander,
ليبك رسول الله من كان باكيا
Let the Prophet of Allah be mourned by whoever mourns,
يا عمود الإسلام خير عمود
O pillar of Islam, best of pillars,
يا عتب سيدتي أما لك دين
O my reproachful beloved, have you no religion
ألم تر هذا الموت يستعرض الخلقا
Have you not seen how death parades all creatures?
إني أرقت وذكر الموت أرقني
I stay awake, death's memory deprives me of sleep
الحمد لله على ما نرى
المرء آفته هوى الدنيا
أما من الموت لحي نجا
نصبت لنا دون التفكر يا دنيا
أشد الجهاد جهاد الهوى
ستمضي مع الأيام كل مصيبة
لا تغضبن على امرئ
من شرف الفقر ومن فضله
خذ الدنيا بأيسرها عليكا
إنما الدهر أرقم لين المسس
لم تبق مني إلا القليل وما
للموت أبناء بهم
عزة الحب أرته ذلتي
حزنت لموت زائدة بن معن
راكب الأيام يجري عليها
والله ربك إنني
ما لعذالي ومالي
أجاب الله داعيك
ألا يا عتب يا قمر الرصافه
نطقت بنو أسد ولم تجهر
صد عني محمد ابن سعيد
فلا أنا راجع ما قد مضى لي
مات ابن نطاح أبو وائل
ولي فؤاد إذا طال العذاب به
ولست بمفراح إذا الدهر سرني
ألم يك في وجدي وبرح تلددي
سبحان جبار السماء
ألا يا بني آدم استنبهوا
أغض عن المرء وعما لديه
يا رب ساكن حفرة
يا نفس ما أوضح قصد السبيل
سكرت بإمرة السلطان جدا
ما أغفل الناس والخطوب بهم
جزعت ولكن ما يرد لي الجزع
خليلي إن لم يغتفر كل واحد
إذا المرء لم يربع على نفسه طاشا
الموت باب وكل الناس داخله
أيا للمنايا ويحها ما أجدها
أراعك نقص منك لما وجدته
نعت نفسها الدنيا إلينا فأسمعت
كأن المنايا قد قصدن إليكما
ما لي أرى الأبصار بي جافية
أخلاي بي شجو وليس بكم شجو
قد نغص الموت علي الحياة
أما تنفك باكية بعين
حتى متى ليت شعري يا ابن يقطين
وتقى المرء له واقية
أبلغ سلمت أبا الوليد سلامي
إنما أنت رحمة وسلامه
وإذا الجبان رأى الأسنة شرعا
يذا الذي في الحب يلحى أما
خليل لي أكاتمه
إذا هم النديم له بلحظ
مددت لمعرض حبلا طويلا
أحييت ذكرا طيبا نشره
يا إخوتي إن الهوى قاتلي
أأخي من لك من بني الدنيا
أزف أبكار أشعاري إليك فما
مؤنس كان لي هلك
إنما الفضل لسلم وحده
يا عتب ما لي ولك
لجت عتيبة في هجري فقلت لها
ما من صديق وإن تمت مودته
ألا يا ذوات السحق في الغرب والشرق
كم يكون الشتاء ثم المصيف
فررت من الفقر الذي هو مدركي
أبا جعفر هلا اقتطعت مودتي
تعصي الإله وأنت تظهر حبه
لعن الإله سواحق الرأس
يا ابن العلاء ويا ابن القرم مرداس
كأن عتابة من حسنها
أهل القبور أتيتكم أتحسس
ألا إن حزب الله ليس بمعجز
يا ويح نفسي لو أنه أقصر
أسرى إليه الردى في حلبة القدر
ليت شعري ما عندكم ليت شعري
جرى لك من هارون بالسعد طائره
هي الأيام والعبر
بدني ناحل وصبري بدين
أنا اليوم لي والحمد لله أشهر
شهدت قريش والقبائل كلها
وأحببت من حبها الباخلين
يا رشيد الأمر أرشدني إلى
أأخي لا تنس القبور
ألا إن ريب الدهر يدني ويبعد
الله بيني وبين مولاتي
إذا جازيت بالإحسان قوما
راعني يا يزيد صوت الغراب
آه من غمي وكربي
ولهني حبها وصيرني
أصبحت بالبصرة ذا غربة
إذا اشتد دوني حجاب امرأ
الصدق إيمان وربتما
نموت وننسى غير أن ذنوبنا
وما ذاك إلا أنني واثق بما
جزى الله عني صالحا بوفائهن
أين القرون الماضيه
إيها إليك أخي إيها
ألم يأن لي يا نفس أن أتنبها
يا واعظ الناس قد أصبحت مهتما
الدهر ذو دول والموت ذو علل
من أحب الدنيا تحير فيها
إذا ما سألت المرء هنت عليه
أيا جامعي الدنيا لمن تجمعونها
لا تكذبن فإنني
المرء نحو من خدينه
ألا من لمهموم الفؤاد حزينه
غلب اليقين علي شكي في الردى
لاعيب في جفوة إخواني
لتجدعن المنايا كل عرنين
عجبا ما ينقضي مني لمن
كن عند أحسن ظن من ظنا
كل رزق أرجوه من مخلوق
أمنت الزمان والزمان خؤون
الحد لله اللطيف بنا
إلهي لا تعذبني فإني
كل امرئ فكما يدين يدان
أين من كان قبلنا أين أينا
كم من أخ لك نال سلطانا
سكن يبقى له سكن
الجود لا ينفك حامده
الخير خير كاسمه
شحطت عن ذوي المودات داري
ألست ترى للدهر نقضا وإبراما
سل القصر أودى أهله أين أهله
مضى النهار ويمضي الليل في مهل
اصبر لكل مصيبة وتجلد
أتدري أي ذل في السؤال
ما لي أفرط فيما ينبغي مالي
يا نفس قد أزف الرحيل
ألا هل إلى طول الحياة سبيل
غفلت وليس الموت عني بغافل
أتطمع أن تخلد لا أبا لك
يا رب شهوة ساعة قد أعقبت
أفنيت عمرك إدبارا وإقبالا
يا ساكن القبر عن قليل
تعالى الواحد الصمد الجليل
شرهت فلست أرضى بالقليل
تنكبت جهلي فاستراح ذوو عذلي
ما للجديدين لا يبلى اختلافهما
إياك من كذب الكذوب وإفكه
كأن يقيننا بالموت شك
إنما أنت بحسك
ليبك على نفسه من بكى
يا رب أرجوك لا سواك
ألا أيها القلب الكثير علائقه
انظر إلى نفسك يا شقي
طلبت أخا في الله في الغرب والشرق
الله كاف فمالي دونه كاف
إن كان لا بد من موت فما كلفي
شدة الحرص ما علمت وضاعه
إنقطاع الأيام عني سريع
ألا إن وهن الشيب فيك لمسرع
أما بيوتك في الدنيا فواسعة
ربما ضاق الفتى ثم اتسع
لعمري لقد نوديت لو كنت تسمع
رضيت لنفسي بغير الرضا
ننسى المنايا على أنا لها غرض
للمرء يوم يحتمى قربه
أفنى شبابك كر الطرف والنفس
خذ الناس أو دع إنما الناس بالناس
يخوض أناس في الكلام ليوجزوا
أفنيت عمرك باغترارك
إذا المرء كانت له فكره
ماذا يريك الزمان من عبره
إني سألت القبر ما فعلت
الله أعلى يدا وأكبر
ألا إلى الله تصير الأمور
إن البخيل وإن أفاد غنى
ليت شعري فإنني لست أدري
المرء يشقى بكل أمر
الله ينجي من المكروه لا حذري
هل عند أهل القبور من خبر
لأمر ما خلقت فما الغرور
ألا يا نفس ما أرجو بدار
ما أشد الموت جدا ولكن
لا يأمن الدهر إلا الخائن البطر
يا عجبا للناس لو فكروا
لعمر أبي لو أنني أتفكر
عيب ابن آدم ما علمت كثير
إن ذا الموت ما عليه مجير
كأنا وإن كنا نياما عن الردى
ايأس من الناس وارج الواحد الصمدا

جدوا فإن الأمر جد
أضيع من العمر ما في يدي
ألا إن ربي قوي مجيد
لاح شيب الرأس مني فاتضح
ألم تر أن الحق أبلج لائح
ذهب الحرص بأصحاب الدلج
لا يعجبنك يا ذا حسن منظرة
نريد بقاء والخطوب تكيد
تخفف من الدنيا لعلك تفلت
تمسك بالتقى حتى تموتا
إيت القبور فنادها أصواتا
أحب من الإخوان كل مؤات
دار بليت بحبها خوانة لمحبها
ننافس في الدنيا ونحن نعيبها
سبحان علام الغيوب
ما استعبد الحرص من له أدب
ألا لله أنت متى تتوب
