1. Lighten your burden of worldly things, perhaps you may be saved
For in righteous conduct and piety lies the path and method
١. تَخَفَّف مِنَ الدُنيا لَعَلَّكَ أَن تَنجو
فَفي البِرِّ وَالتَقوى لَكَ المَسلَكُ النَهجُ
2. I have seen the ruin of the house recounted by its vanity
When the flute, lute and lyre gather
٢. رَأَيتُ خَرابَ الدارِ يَحكيهِ لَهوَها
إِذا اجتَمَعَ المِزمارُ وَالعودُ وَالصَنجُ
3. O deluded one, will you have an argument
With which to contend on the Day of Resurrection?
٣. أَلا أَيُّها المَغرورُ هَل لَكَ حُجَّةٌ
فَأَنتَ بِها يَومَ القِيامَةِ مُحتَجُّ
4. Contemplate the turns of events, for in every moment
They inflict sorrow upon your heart
٤. تَدَبَّر صُروفَ الحادِثاتِ فَإِنَّها
بِقَلبِكَ مِنها كُلَّ آوِنَةٍ سَحجُ
5. Do not assume conditions will remain for their people
For a situation may go straight then bend
٥. وَلا تَحسَبِ الحالاتِ تَبقى لِأَهلِها
فَقَد تَستَقيمُ الحالُ طَوراً وَتَعوَجُّ
6. Whoever enjoys something enjoys its subtleties
And whoever dislikes something finds fault in it
٦. مَنِ استَطرَفَ الشَيءَ استَلَذَّ اطِّرافَهُ
وَمَن مَلَّ شَيئاً كانَ فيهِ لَهُ مَجُّ
7. When the vile act rashly, their minds are distraught
Such is the contention of scoundrels when contending
٧. إِذا لَجَّ أَهلُ اللُؤمِ طاشَت عُقولُهُم
كَذاكَ لَجاجاتُ اللِئامِ إِذا لَجّوا
8. Blessed is He who alone cures worries
And who by Him alone fire and ice befriend
٨. تَبارَكَ مَن لَم تَشفِ إِلّا بِهِ الرُقى
وَلَم يَأتَلِف إِلّا بِهِ النارُ وَالثَلجُ
