1. You seem as though you've dwelt with those who lie in graves
It is death, O son of death, if you do not hasten
١. كَأَنَّكَ قَد جاوَرتَ أَهلَ المَقابِرِ
هُوَ المَوتُ يا ابنَ المَوتِ إِن لَم تُبادِرِ
2. Listen to the days if you are a listener
For you are between an advisor and one who commands
٢. تَسَمَّع مِنَ الأَيامِ إِن كُنتَ سامِعاً
فَإِنَّكَ فيها بَينَ ناهٍ وَآمِرِ
3. Do not cast news without knowledge
Nor carry the news from every talebearer
٣. وَلا تَرمِ بِالأَخبارِ مِن غَيرِ خِبرَةٍ
وَلا تَحمِلِ الأَخبارَ عَن كُلِّ خابِرِ
4. For how many a dear soul have we seen persist
Only for one of the spheres to turn against him
٤. فَكَم مِن عَزيزٍ قَد رَأَينا امتِناعَهُ
فَدارَت عَلَيهِ بَعدُ إِحدى الدَوائِرِ
5. And how many kings are now buried beneath the soil
When just yesterday they sat atop pulpits
٥. وَكَم مَلِكٍ قَد رُكِّمَ التُربُ فَوقَهُ
وَعَهدي بِهِ في الأَمسِ فَوقَ المَنابِرِ
6. And how many seek that which they cannot attain
And how many come but do not intend to stay
٦. وَكَم دائِبٍ يُعنى بِما لَيسَ مُدرِكاً
وَكَم وارِدٍ ما لَيسَ عَنهُ بِصادِرِ
7. I have not seen any so completely cut off
As the dead are to a neighbor right next door
٧. وَلَم أَرَ كَالأَمواتِ أَبعَدَ شُقَّةً
عَلى قُربِها مِن دارِ جارٍ مُجاوِرِ
8. A wise master has arranged this world
Subtle, Expert, Knowing of all secrets
٨. لَقَد دَبَّرَ الدُنيا حَكيمٌ مُدَبِّرٌ
لَطيفٌ خَبيرٌ عالِمٌ بِالسَرائِرِ
9. If the world leaves a man his faith
Then what he misses of it is no loss
٩. إِذا أَبقَتِ الدُنيا عَلى المَرءِ دينَهُ
فَمافاتَهُ مِنها فَلَيسَ بِضائِرِ
10. If for every blessing you are granted
You do not give thanks, you are ungrateful
١٠. إِذا أَنتَ لَم تَزدَد عَلى كُلِّ نِعمَةٍ
خُصِصتَ بِها شُكراً فَلَستَ بِشاكِرِ
11. If you do not prefer God's pleasure alone
Above all else you desire, you lack patience
١١. إِذا أَنتَ لَم تُؤثِر رِضى اللَهِ وَحدَهُ
عَلى كُلِّ ما تَهوى فَلَستَ بِصابِرِ
12. If you do not cleanse yourself of ignorance and sin
You are not pure, even if in the Euphrates you swim
١٢. إِذا أَنتَ لَم تَطهُر مِنَ الجَهلِ وَالخَنا
فَلَستَ عَلى عَومِ الفُراتِ بِطاهِرِ
13. If you hold no affection for a man
You cannot influence what is in his hand
١٣. إِذا لَم تَكُن لِلمَرءِ عِندَكَ رَغبَةٌ
فَلَستَ عَلى ما في يَدَيهِ بِقادِرِ
14. If you see through the world, then all
You will take from it is provision for a journey
١٤. إِذا كُنتَ بِالدُنيا بَصيراً فَإِنَّما
بَلاغُكَ مِنها مِثلُ زادِ المُسافِرِ
15. Wisdom is only what the noble prohibit
And people are either righteous or corrupt
١٥. وَما الحُكمُ إِلّا ما عَلَيهِ ذَوُ النُهى
وَما الناسُ إِلّا بَينَ بَرٍّ وَفاجِرِ
16. No morning comes but as a counselor
To the steadfast minds with keen insight
١٦. وَما مِن صَباحٍ مَرَّ إِلّا مُؤَدِّباً
لِأَهلِ العُقولِ الثابِتاتِ البَصائِرِ
17. I see you make light of grave sins in your youth
Yet you are a man, not a lad playing games
١٧. أَراكَ تُساوى بِالأَصاغِرِ في الصَبايا
وَأَنتَ كَبيرٌ مِن كِبارِ الكَبائِرِ
18. As if you've never buried a dear friend
Nor for him at the threshing floors of death stood guard
١٨. كَأَنَّكَ لَم تَدفِن حَميماً وَلَم تَكُن
لَهُ في حِياضِ المَوتِ يَوماً بِحاصِرِ
19. I have not seen any forget like death is forgotten
You see it, yet nothing deserves recollection more
١٩. وَلَم أَرَ مِثلَ المَوتِ أَكثَرَ ناسِياً
تَراهُ وَلا أَولى بِتَذكارِ ذاكِرِ
20. A man who sells his faith for some paltry gain
Will leave that deal a definite loser
٢٠. وَإِنَّ امرَأً يَبتاعُ ضُنيا بِدينِهِ
لَمُنقَلِبٌ مِنها بِصَفقَةِ خاسِرِ
21. And whoever does not set out with wares
To his other home is no trader
٢١. وَكُلُّ امرِئٍ لَم يَرتَحِل بِتِجارَةٍ
إِلى دارِهِ الأُخرى فَلَيسَ بِتاجِرِ
22. I am pleased to oppose for every stubborn soul
And all who would boast, my Lord's decree
٢٢. رَضيتُ بِذي الدُنيا لِكُلِّ مُكابِرِ
مُلِحٍّ عَلى الدُنيا وَكُلِّ مُفاخِرِ
23. Have you not seen him climb so high that when
He prospered, his throat was slit by a butcher's blade?
٢٣. أَلَم تَرَها تَرقيهِ حَتّى إِذا صَبا
فَرَت حَلقَهُ مِنها بِمُديَةِ جازِرِ
24. The world is not equal to a gnat's wing
In God's sight, nor the buzzing of a flying bug
٢٤. وَما تَعدِلُ الدُنيا جَناحَ بَعوضَةٍ
لَدى اللَهِ أَو مِقدارَ زَغبَةِ طائِرِ
25. No believer accepts the world as reward
Nor does any disbeliever see it as punishment
٢٥. فَلَم يَرضَ بِالدُنيا ثَواباً لِمُؤمِنٍ
وَلَم يَرضَ بِالدُنيا عِقاباً لِكافِرِ
