1. Man is deceived by his desires,
And time hastens his ruin.

2. O you who are led astray, do not be
One whose passion enslaves him.

3. Know that man will surely be disgraced
By what his hands have earned.

4. How many a brother you do not see
Has power over who you see!

5. One who yesterday was your neighbor
Now lies under the earth covered over.

6. He was blinded by his days,
Until death came to him.

7. People are heedless,
And death’s circling is their pasture.

8. So praise be to God, who remains
While all else perishes.
