1. O dwellers of the graves, peace be upon you from me
I speak to you though you cannot speak
١. أَهلَ القُبورِ عَلَيكُمُ مِنّي السَلام
إِنّي أُكَلِّمُكُم وَلَيسَ بِكُم كَلام
2. Think not beloved ones failed to pine
For you, with neither food nor drink
٢. لا تَحسَبوا أَنَّ الأَحِبَّةَ لَم يَسُغ
مِن بَعدِكُم لَهُمُ الشَرابُ وَلا الطَعام
3. Nay, they discarded and replaced you
And the dove parted them from you
٣. كَلّا لَقَد رَفَضوكُمُ وَاِستَبدَلوا
بِكُمُ وَفَرَّقَ ذاتَ بَينِكُمُ الحِمام
4. Thus all people alike, so whoever
Has died, has no claim on the living
٤. وَالخَلقُ كُلُّهُمُ كَذاكَ فَكُلُّ مَن
قَد ماتَ لَيسَ لَهُ عَلى حَيٍّ ذِمام
5. I asked the graves of kings, and they told me
That in them are but bones and worm
٥. ساءَلتُ أَجداثَ المُلوكِ فَأَخبَرَت
ني أَنَّهُم فيهِنَّ أَعضاءٌ وَهام
6. Naught remains of those bodies
That lived in ease except the bones
٦. لَم يَبقَ مِن أَجسادِهِم تِلكَ الَّتي
غُدِيَت بِأَنعَمِ عيشَةٍ إِلّا العِظام
7. By Allah, what the dust covers of loved ones
Were the generous when the generous are mentioned
٧. لِلَّهِ ما وارى التُرابُ مِنَ الأُلى
كانوا الكِرامَ هُمُ إِذا ذُكِرَ الكِرام
8. By Allah, what the dust covers of loved ones
Were those whose neighbor was unharmed
٨. لِلَّهِ ما وارى التُرابُ مِنَ الأُلى
كانوا وَجارُهُمُ مَنيعٌ لا يُضام
9. Destroyed them He Who destroys kings
And for destruction and decay humans were created
٩. أَفناهُمُ مَن لَم يَزَل يُفني المُلو
كَ وَلِلفَناءِ وَلِلبَلى خُلِقَ الأَنام
10. My friend, I forgot the house of my stay
And inhabited a house wherein I have no stay
١٠. يا صاحِبَيَّ نَسيتُ دارَ إِقامَتي
وَعَمَرتُ داراً لَيسَ لي فيها مُقام
11. A house whose people fate desires to move
As if they know not what is intended for them
١١. دارٌ يُريدُ الدَهرُ نُقلَةَ أَهلِها
وَكَأَنَّهُم عَمّا يُرادُ بِهِم نِيام
12. I gained no pleasure from it but what
Events refused to let last
١٢. ما نِلتُ مِنها لَذَّةً إِلّا وَقَد
أَبَتِ الحَوادِثُ أَن يَكونَ لَها دَوام
