يا نفس ما هو إلا صبر أيام

1. O soul, this is nothing but the patience of days
As if their pleasures are worthless dreams

١. يا نَفسُ ما هُوَ إِلّا صَبرُ أَيّامِ
كَأَنَّ لَذَّتَها أَضغاثُ أَحلامِ

2. O soul, why can't I stop being ambitious
My eyes are quickly desirous and high-aspiring

٢. يا نَفسُ ما لِيَ لا أَنفَكُّ مِن طَمَعٍ
طَرفي إِلَيهِ سَريعٌ طامِحٌ سامِ

3. O soul, distance yourself from this world
And leave it behind, for truth is ahead of me

٣. يا نَفسُ كوني عَنِ الدُنيا مُباعِدَةً
وَخَلِّفيها فَإِنَّ الحَقَّ قُدّامي

O soul, what provisions I have except what benefits me

٤. يا نَفسِ ما الذُخرُ إِلّا ما اِنتَفَعتُ بِهِ
في القَبرِ يَومَ يَكونُ الدَفنُ إِكرامي

5. In the grave, the day my burial is my honor
Time has its turns in how it passes

٥. وَلِلزَمانِ وَعيدٌ في تَصَرُّفِهِ
إِنَّ الزَمانَ لَذو نَقضٍ وَإِبرامِ

6. Indeed, time is prone to breaking and mending
As for old age, it has shown its deterioration

٦. أَمّا المَشيبُ فَقَد أَدّى نَذارَتَهُ
وَقَد قَضى ما عَلَيهِ مُنذُ أَعوامِ

7. And it has fulfilled what was required of it since years ago

٧. إِنّي لَأَستَكثِرُ الدُنيا وَأُعظِمُها
جَهلاً وَلَم أَرَها أَهلاً لِإِعظامِ

8. I exaggerate the value of worldly life and esteem it
Ignorantly, and I did not see it as worthy of esteem

٨. يا ذا الَّذي يَومُهُ آتٍ بِساعَتِهِ
وَإِن تَأَخَّرَ عَن عامٍ إِلى عامِ

9. O you whose day is coming in its hour
Even if it is delayed from year to year

٩. فَلَو عَلا بِكَ أَقوامٌ مَناكِبَهُم
حَثّوا بِنَعشِكَ إِسراعاً بِأَقدامِ

10. If people carried your bier on their shoulders
Rushing your coffin quickly on foot

١٠. في يَومِ آخِرِ تَوديعٍ تُوَدَّعُهُ
تُهدى إِلى حَيثُ لا فادٍ وَلا حامِ

11. On the last day of farewells, when you bid it farewell
You will be gifted to where there is no redemption or protector

١١. ما الناسُ إِلّا كَنَفسٍ في تَقارُبِهِم
لَولا تَفاوُتُ أَرزاقٍ وَأَقسامِ

12. People are but like breaths in their nearness
If not for differences of provisions and fates

١٢. كَم لِاِبنِ آدَمَ مِن لَهوٍ وَمِن لَعِبٍ
وَلِلحَوادِثِ مِن شَدٍّ وَإِقدامِ

13. How much vain play and nonsense for the children of Adam
And how much firmness and resoluteness from incidents

١٣. كَم قَد نَعَت لَهُمُ الدُنيا الحُلولَ بِها
لَو أَنَّهُم سَمِعوا مِنها بِأَفهامِ

14. How much has worldly life lured them with its comforts
If only they had listened with understanding

١٤. وَكَم تَخَرَّمَتِ الأَيّامُ مِن بَشَرٍ
كانوا ذَوي قُوَّةٍ فيها وَأَجسامِ

15. And how many days have worn out people
Who were strong in it with bodies and power

١٥. يا ساكِنَ الدارَ تَبنيها وَتَعمُرُها
وَالدارُ دارُ مَنِيّاتٍ وَأَسقامِ

16. O dweller of the house, you build it and inhabit it
While the house is the home of perishments and illnesses

١٦. لا تَلعَبَنَّ بِكَ الدُنيا وَخُدعَتُها
فَكَم تَلاعَبَتِ الدُنيا بِأَقوامِ

17. Do not be fooled by this deceitful world
For how many nations has the world toyed with

١٧. يا رُبَّ مُقتَصِدٍ عَن غَيرِ تَجرِبَةٍ
وَمُعتَدٍ بَعدَ تَجريبٍ وَإِحكامِ

18. O Lord of the moderately abstemious without experience
And the excessively indulgent after trial and examination

١٨. وَرُبَّ مُكتَسِبٍ بِالحِلمِ واقِيَةً
وَرُبَّ مُستَهدِفٍ بِالبَغيِ لِلرامي
