ما سره أن ذاع من أسراره
What pleased him to spread his secrets

رفق الزمان بنا وكان عنيفا

أقصر الزاجر عنه فازدجر

خير أوقاتك في اللذات
The best of your times are times of pleasure
وجندبة تمشي بساق كأنه
A gerboa walks on legs as though they were

Bring me the wine with helping hands
يا رب جسم كله نواظر

وندمان دعوت إلى العقار

كيف خلاصي من العراق وقد
How can I escape from Iraq when I have chosen in it
هم صرموا حبل الهوى فتصرما
They have broken the cord of love, so it was severed
أؤنب الشوق فيهم وهو يضطرم

غراء تنشر للحيا أعلاما

ولما اصطحبنا والخمار يصدنا

هلم فقد بردت راحنا

مدحتكم فلم أدرك لديكم
I praised you, but found with you
رب منيف في ذرى منيف
Many a camp in the valley of camps
وروض كساه الغيث إذ جاد أرضه
A garden the rain has clothed when its land was generous
لنا مغن حسن الغناء
We have a fine singer
لم يشف بالدمع عليل الفراق
The lovesick is not cured by tears shed over separation
نفسي فداؤك هاديا
My soul is your ransom, O guide
أقطعتني روض الغنى كرما ولم

قد وفت المزن بميعادها

الله جارك ظاعنا ومقيما

ناديك من مطر الإحسان ممطور

خذا من العيش فالأعمار فانية

تلاف السهم أثبت في الشغاف

رأيت خيار بني مسهر

The night that we spent on the mountain slope,
حرق تمتري الدموع سجالا
Burning passion flows my tears in streams,
صبابة منك لجت في تماديها
A youthfulness from you insisted in its persistence,
تحية الغيث منهلا سحائبه
The rain's greeting is a spring whose clouds
أبا العمر خيم أم بالحشاء
O master of a lifetime pitched or amid the wilderness,
ظهر الهوى وتهنكت أستاره
Love has appeared and its veils have been lifted,
وكأنما الكانون ألهب جمره
As if embers were set ablaze by the brazier,
إن شيطانك في الظرف
Your devil is outwardly apparent
قد أغتدي نشوان من خمر الكرى
I have become intoxicated with the wine of distress,
لله آية ليلة أحييتها

لنا من الدهر خصم لا نغالبه

تجنبني حسن المدام وطيبها
The charm and sweetness of wine avoided me,
شوى أثوابه قشب
His clothes are tattered rags
هل للوزير أدام الله دولته
Does the minister, may God prolong his rule,
رب صاف رقرقته الريح
Many a pure stream the wind disturbs
سارية في الظلام مهدية
A guiding light in the darkness
لا تأخذني بجرم كاسات
Do not blame me for the sins of goblets,
وشمعة في يد الغلام حكت
A candle in a boy's hand traced
كأن تأجج كانوننا
As if our passion's flare
لو سالمته سجايا طرفك الساجي

الكأس تهدي إلى شرابها فرحا

قم بنا قبل غرة الإصباح

وحية في رأسها درة

I can overcome the currents of fleeting life,

نل من الأيام ثارا

وروضة بات طل الغيث ينسجها

عرض المشيب لعارضي فزادني
The sight of gray hair brought me disgrace
زارني في دجا الظلام البهيم
The moon visited me in the dark gloom
عفاء على اللذات من بعد فارس
Delight has lost its savor after the knight departed.
ذكرناه فانهلت مدامعنا تترى
We mentioned him, so our tears flowed
كستك الشبيبة ريعانها
Youth shed its blossoms upon you
وأغن كالرشإ الغرير
He sang like a young nightingale
دمي عليك حرام

تصرم شهر الصوم شهر الزلازل
The fasting month has passed, the month of tremors,
ومجرد كالنصل أسلم نفسه
Bare like a blade he surrendered himself
هذا أوان ثمار له
This is the time for its fruits,
غدت لذاتنا أمما
Our pleasures have become nations
لو تداركتني بوعد غرور
If you had deceived me with a false promise
أقول لسائق الأظعان رفقا
I say to the driver of sorrows, gently,
كان جليدا فخانه جلده
He was ice but his skin betrayed him
أيها المطلون بعدي حذار
O you who come after me, beware!
وروضة آذريون قد زر وسطها
The garden of Adhriyun has been adorned in its center
أنخت في حانة أترجة
I dwelled in a tavern of sweet grace,
أفي دمى أبكت العيون دما
In the tears my eyes shed profusely
نطقت بفضل أبي شجاع آية

وابنة بر لم تبن عن زهد

سارية في غسق الظلام
A caravan in the darkness of night
جاءك شهر السرور شوال
The month of joy, Shawwal, has come
ومعتدل يسعى إلي بكأسه
With one who strives towards me with his cup
من كان يبغي أن تضاهي كفه
Whoever wishes that his palm would rival
خليلي إن الغيث أوله قطر
My beloved, the first of rain is but a drop
آثار جودك في الخطوب تؤثر
The effects of your generosity in hardships have an impact
غذيت به طفلا وإن رمت تركه
I nurtured him as a child, though now you'd have me abandon him,
لامت قبلك يا أخي لا باخلا
I did not blame you before, my brother, out of stinginess,
إذا شئت أن تجتاح حقا بباطل
If you wish to vanquish truth with falsehood
غدوت بها مجنونة في اغتدائها
I became infatuated with her when she revealed herself
رأت شيئا يضاحكها فصدت

أقارع أعداء النبي وآله
I strike the enemies of the Prophet and his family
أبدر دجى غالته إحدى الغوائل
One of the maidens shed the light of her braids,
فما يبالي إذا ما الدهر أسعده
What does he care if fate makes him happy
هل لك يا ابن غاليه
Oh son of my dear one
إذا الشيب باعد بين القلوب
When gray hair has separated hearts,
خلالك ما اختل الصديق سحائب
Through you, my friend did not become estranged, even as clouds drifted
إني أرى في جدار دار
I see on a house's wall
ومارقة مرق السهام تضمها

The boughs of affection from nurturing and play
لقد نزعت من عقد ثغرك درة
You have plucked a pearl from the necklace of your smile,
تأبى الصبابة أن تصيخ لعاذل
The youth refused to be silenced by a reproacher
يا حسن لينوفر شغفت به
O beauty of a soft Nile, I am smitten with it,
سأحتج للملحي أقوم حجة
I will make the strongest case for the salty one
إن عاده بعد السلو غرامه
If his passion returns after separation
ألم ترني سطوت على الزمان
Did you not see me prevail over time,
جاءت هديتك التي
Your gift has arrived,
تصابى فأضحى بعد سلوته صبا
He resisted, but after his refusal became compliant
أتظن أن الدهر يسعف طالبا
Do you think fate assists the seeker
اصبر على مترادف الضراء
Be patient with the succession of misfortunes,
قد أمكن الطالب مطلوب
The student has attained what he desired
وجدول بين حديقتين
A stream between two gardens
فلقد حدا برق الغليل
The lightning of passion flashed
قبلت على الكره نيل البخيل
I kissed the hand of the miser to get a little from the little he had
يوم رذاذ ممسك الحجب
A day of misty spray, curtains drawn closed
أما آن للملحي أن ينشر الودا
Should the salt encroacher spread friendship
كيف يخشى الملحي رقة حال
How can the effeminate one fear the softness of a situation
أبدين وصلا إذ رحمن متيما
I show affection when Compassionate is forbearing
وبيت نشيده للمصيف
A summer house I composed verses for,
يا ابن فهد وأنت بدر تمام
O son of Fahd, you are the full moon,
شعر ابن أوس رياض جمة الطرف
The poetry of Ibn Awos is a beautiful garden,
أقبل يحدو الخصب في إقباله
The fertility strides forth in its advance
واصطبحناها على نهر
We found it by the bank
وصف ابن يوسف لي بكل فضيلة
Ibn Yusuf was described to me with every virtue,
على الرغم بدلت من رغم لاحي
Despite being turned from softness to coarseness,
شيم الأمير وفت لنا بعداتها
The prince's virtues have revealed to us his qualities,
عندي ضيف لم يزل مضيفا
My guest has been a host, eminent
فؤاد علي بالسماح علوق
Ali's heart is high with generosity,
قل للأمير الماجد السامى
Say to the noble prince, lofty among his peers,
أ أقحوانا أرته أم بردا
Is it a grazing deer that I saw, or just a mirage?
ألا حي مفقود الشمائل ماثلا
O absent of sublime traits though present,
قضب الهند والقنا أخدانك
The staffs of India and cane are your brothers,
تغير إخوان الصفاء فكلهم
The brothers of sincerity have changed, and all of them
هل للعليل سوى ابن قرة شافي
Is there for the sick but the son of Qurrah a healer
إلمامها أهدى إلى الصب لمم
Her knowledge led to perseverance against hardships,
أدرها ففقد اللوم إحدى الغنائم
Indulge her, for the absence of blame is one of the spoils,
هل الصبر مجد حين أدرع الصبرا
Is patience truly glorious when I don the armor of patience,
وأزهر وضاح يروق عيوننا
A blooming flower delights our eyes
فؤادي بك مشغوف
My heart is infatuated with you,
أقررت في شكرك بالتقصير
I have decided to fail in thanking you
صنم شغفت بحبه
An idol I fell in love with
قد أغتدي قبل وجوب الفرض
I may oversleep before the obligatory dawn prayer
أمقدم يا أبا المقدام أنت على
Are you advancing, O father of the advancements? You are
غدا تبدي مدامعنا الخفايا
Tomorrow our tears will reveal the secrets
وزنجية عرفت بالإباق
A black Zanjiyyah, known for her defiance
ومنزل يتحامى أهله الخفر
A home whose dwellers are guarded by modesty,
أنعته معصفر البردين
I describe him as wearing a yellow cloak,
وهواك لو كان الملام صلاحا
Your love, if blame was virtue
سوداء لم تنتسب لحام
Dark-skinned beauty unrelated to the dove,
قم فانتصف من صروف الدهر والنوب
Arise and take your chance while fate is kind,
يحيي اشتياقا بعضنا بك بعضنا
Some of us greet each other with longing
لما تنادى اليوم بالخفوف
When the call was made today gently
يا ابن الذي سيفه في السلم مسلول
O son of him whose sword in peace is drawn,
عش مدى الدهر يا أبا إسحاق
Live long, O Abu Ishaq
كبوة الهم بين كاس وكوب
The burden of worries between a cup and a goblet,
حمراء لم تكذب ولم تصدق
Red, who did not lie nor tell the truth
أسلم للأيام أم لا أسلم
Shall I submit to the days, or shall I not submit?
وقفت بها أبكي وترزم ناقتي
I stood there weeping, while my she-camel knelt,
أي قواف يعز مونقها
What rhyme schemes charm their composer
إلام يروم الحاسدون نضالي
Why do the envious plot against my struggle?
عذلت وهل عذل المتيم نافعه
I was blamed, but does blaming the bereaved benefit him?
ينافسني في الشعر والشعر كاسد
He competes with me in poetry, though poetry is dead,
لابد من نفثة مصدور
The sighs of a grieving heart must be let out
يا أبا إسحاق زاد الله
O Abu Ishaq, God has increased
لك في السفرجل منظر تحظى به
On a journey you have a sight to behold
مرحبا بالصبوح في الظلماء
Greet the dawn in the darkness
قمر تفرد بالمحاسن كلها
A moon that encompasses all beauties
لست بناف خمار مخمور
I am not one who drinks wine recklessly,
عذر العذول فراح فيك مساعدا
Excuses have departed, so passion came to help you,
صدودك علم النوم الصدودا
Your rejection taught sleep to reject
وسألت عنه فقيل مات لما به
I asked about him, and was told he had died because of what ailed him
أبا حسن إن وجه الربيع

لقد طمع البشري في ولم يكن
He was greedy for my praise, though no wise man
أخلق بغائب رشده أن يقدما
ليالينا بأحياء الغميم
قصاراك أن تلقى الزمان مسلما
اليوم يعذب ورد فيه تكدير
أمن العيون تروم فقد عنائه
وأعين تأنف من إغضائها
تناهى فاطمأن إلى العتاب
طلعت شموس الخدر كيما تغربا
إذا السحاب حداه البرق مجنونا
وباكية ليلها كله
باليمن ما رفع الأمير وشيدا
قليل لها أن يتبع الدمع غيرها
مرضت جفونك والحتوف شعارها
ثنت لك أعطافها والخصورا
أنظر إلى السوسن في نباته
ويوم كاد من قصر
ومبنية من خيزران مفضض
أهجرا كان صدك أم ملالا
قضى بوقوف الركب حق المواقف
قد عقلت اللسان دونك والخائن
أنى يعود من الصبابة مفرقا
طوى الشوق لولا بارق يتألق
لا يعرف العدل وهو معتدل
أجل هو الفتح لا فتح يشاكله
سحابك في السماح لها انسجام
ما ودع اللهو لما بان منصرما
ما تم وشك البين حتى تيما
وعارض مثل داره البدر
منازلنا التي لبست بلاها
أمير العلا لا زلت كهفا لآمل
قام مثل القمر الزا
وبركة حفة بنيلوفر
فإن تعف عني تعف عن غير جاحد
جوهري الأوصاف يقصر عنه
قم يا غلام فهاتها في كأسها
خفقت راية الصباح وللنار
ألا هل لعلوي الرياح هبوب
ألا جزعت بيض السيوف على فتى
أحوال مجدك في العلو سواء
ومنزل رق به الهواء
أحذركم أمواج دجلة إذ غدت
فتح أعز به الإسلام صاحبه
أخلت أن جنابا منك يجتنب
هذه الشمس أوشكت أن تغيبا
أهون علي بعبد الله إن غضبا
هفا طربا في أوان الطرب
أجزار باب الشام كيف وجدتني
جد لي بها للشرخ من نشابها
الكأس قطب السرور والطرب
لما رأينا خمار الكأس يعلقنا
لما مضى يومك في اللذات
أهدت على نأي المحل وقد
صرفت عن الكثير الوفر طرفي
رأيت الناس ذا جود ومنع
لمحة البارق من حيث لمح
قل للأمير الذي علا فغدا
لم ألق ريحانة ولا راحا
قامت تثنى بين أترابها
نفسي فداؤك كيف تصبر طائعا
قل لابن حرب قد جنيت
أعاد الحيا سكر النبات وقد صحا
إن عن لهو أو سنح
خطرات هي العلا وارتياح
صنائع الله لا نحصي لها عددا
أقبل كالذود رعت شوارده
سهادي فيك أعذب من رقادي
وقانا الله فيك منى الحسود
سواء علينا وعدها ووعيدها
أناشد دهري أن يعود كما بدا
إسمع مقالا من أخ ذي ود
صفر مدار تضمها شرف
أمير الندى إن الثناء خلود
أقول لحنان العشي المغرد
قصد الدهر فيك من بعد جور
لا سقيت حانة أترجة
تقربت من هذي القوارب راكبا
نوائب دهر مكثرات عنادها
لما مضى اليوم حميدا فانجرد
أعن الأهلة في الدياجر
أحل بعقوة الشرف التليد
شباب المرء ثوب مستعار
للخالديين جمال منظر
سيوفكم بحمد الله نفع
يا من أنامله كالعارض الساري
أعاد الله عيدك بالسرور
لنا غرفة حسنت منظرا
هل للمكارم من مجير
ينبيك عن صحة أخباري
وبديعة أضحى الجمال شعارها
أسعيد هل لك في زيارة منزل
لست أرجي انحطاط أوزاري
قصاراك في اللوم أن تقصرا
غنت تحاوره بطرف أحور
ومستدير بلا قطب يدور به
وعقفاء مثل هلال السما
فقدت أبا عمران عرسا شفيفة
من ذم إدريس في قيادته
قد تركت عرس أبي جعفر
وصفراء من ماء الكروم شربتها
إلف الخيال أراك إلفا شاسعا
يا من لديه العفاف والورع
أتكتم أسرار الهوى أم تذيعها
وأدهم يسفر عن ضده
أيها السيد الذي راحتاه
بنفسي من رد التحية ضاحكا
ومحجوبة بالماء عن كل ناظر
دعوت بالشعر على خده
لنا روضة في الدار صيغ لزهرها
ألا سقني الصهباء صرفا فإنني
أمعنفي إن زدت في التعنيف
هواء كالهوى حسنا وظرفا
أمحل صبوتنا دعاء مشوق
عذيري من الدين الذي راح عبؤه
وطيب النشر عبق
كشف الصباح قناعه فتألقا
أهلا وسهلا بطارق طرقا
ألبرق سرى بأعلى البراق
وريم رمتني ألحاظه
حلفت عنك يمينا غيرصادقة
يكفيك أن قنافا راعه غضبي
لله حسان فتى معرقا
طرقنا أبا عامر موهنا
وباكر لغيره ما يرزق
عقبى دوائك صحة تغشاكا
وضاحك الروض محلى المنزل
لنا مجلس لو لم تغب عنه كامل
تأبى المنازل أن تجيب مسائلا
حمى الأمير أمان الخائف الوجل
لي من عبيد الله خل ما أرى
هل سبيل إلى تقاصر ليل
بمن تسطو الصوارم والعوالي
أبا إسحاق يا جبلي
لما مضى اليوم حميدا فانصرم
برز إبراهيم في علمه
غالت بني مطر الأيام واكتأبت
أبا الصاب سقاك الله
أسمعتما أن الجبال تضام
ها إنها خطط العلياء والكرم
بلاني الحب فيك بما بلاني
أقررت يا ابن العصب العيونا
عصى الرشاد فقد ناداه من حين
أبا الحسين دعت نفسي أمانيها
أرق جفني حبش ونوب
أنعته قطا حديد الناب
أنكرته إذ رأيته وجنته
ونعرت بالماء ناعورة
درجني الحرف أي تدريج
لك يا ابن العصب
أبا الفتح رحت بوجه وقاح
كأن العقيق بكاساتها
سوداء مغبرة السواد فقل
حيا بك الله عاشقيك فقد
هاج لقلبي الشوق وجد طرقه
