1. O Abu Isaac, the assault of words and subtle meanings has shaded you
And the resolute one with piercing insight has come to you, clinging to straps

2. A drop that if it were to dry up from a perfumed leather waterskin
After it the traditions of discord would be erased

3. So make your poetry a stronghold that protects
Against the assault of the deviant dissenters

4. Before the clashing of swords that spills blood
In the purity of its flowing liquid

5. The looting in the barren town became
Seated on Iraq’s throne

6. And violation of sanctuaries under the portico
Of the king while they are on the thrones of the portico

7. I was adorned with wealth of poetry
So I adorned myself with it without guile

8. O eyes, change your tears for this
For the loss of a loved one is not like parting

9. The mornings of dogs have destroyed my poetry
So it passed - or the evenings of barbers

10. A raid that was not with the reddish swords
When it was waged, nor the slender polished swords

11. Its horsemen charged me while seated
Their hips not made lighter by the saddles

12. The souls of kings were anguished, O father of commotion
Who came to war with the souls of noblemen

13. With meadows like gardens they walked
Among their lights the waters of irrigation canals

14. And meanings that you analyzed so they became
For the phrasing like powdered musk

15. Eloquent without peers, excellent in beauty
Watered by the natural elegance of the composer

16. Radiant, showing you word and meaning
Red cheeks in the whiteness of well-arranged pearls

17. O what a raid that causes confusion in the sanctuary
Between the doves and the circular fences

18. That renders the advancing horseman noble
While some of the daring are left disgraced

19. If you saw poetry thunder because of it
Between that rumbling and lightning

20. And the hearts of words flutter in fear
Beneath the fluttering banners

21. And the swords of misguidance that massacre
The chaste pages and sheets

22. And the tender faces bloodied by the red
Lips in the battle of chaste white faces

23. You would have breathed relief for the red
Cheeks from them, and the slender necks

24. And the meadows on which the rain of calamities with truthful
Burning and the liar downpour was insistent

25. And the stars that remain the stars of the
Sky, while their envious rivals watch their rising

26. After composing odes in the sky of glories
And spreading in horizons

27. And selecting their jewelry, no longer
The finest of necks and throats

28. And you plucked youth in it until
The cold of youth was tempted by morals

29. So it is like wine in purity
Radiance, bouquet and taste

30. A diction that shames spring when
The clouds conclude upon it the pact of assembly

31. An Arabian whose breaths are the smell of Artemisia and
Wormwood, and Artemisia flowers and chamomile

32. A questioner from the valleys of Thawr
Among its trunks and open spaces

33. So it is whatever you wish of the neighing of steeds
And it is whatever you wish of the moaning of she-camels

34. O crescent moon of literature, O son of Hilal
May God protect you from the course of destruction

35. You whom the glories are made smooth for
While among the companions of difficult paths

36. Merchandise that has no guardian against one who covets it
A serpent that has no charmer against one who wrangles with it

37. The sustenance was apportioned in talents among us
So we called its apportioner the sustenance-apportioner

38. I will gift you from the servants of glory
Maidens who shun the ugliness of immorality

39. All imprinted with your name in perishing
Its mark on their foreheads and hidden places

40. Truthful in affection, their tongues truthful
In praise, fulfilling in friendship

41. I and enemies over time are a draught
We take turns sipping destruction in a large cup

42. If our blood met in an abode
We would part from it after the meeting

43. And they are our old strings that do not
Take our strings out of tunefulness

44. In it is only the striking of lutes
And the piercing of throats and cheeks

45. Or you see other than what you have seen, for I am
One who reconciles from a pretentious deceiver

46. He falsified poetry and youth so he became
Morals of the face darkened

47. He almost drowned me, and many a drowned one
Waded into the depth of drowning

48. And when the enemy unmasks and shows
Injustice, or creeps in the darkness of hypocrisy

49. So I am wrath in the breasts of enemies
And my resolute self dwelling in the intestines
