1. He turned away my eyelids with the downpour of tears that flowed
When I greeted him, and he responded most excellently

2. My sadness allowed me to do so, so I did not refrain
From shedding tears while the litters were being prepared

3. He is like the full moon - whenever we glimpse him for a moment
He grants the glance bounty and roses

4. He is like a wild animal - he does not show affection readily
And like a branch - he does not bend easily

5. If he departs or leaves in the mornings or evenings
In the cooing of doves or the warbling of ringdoves

6. O lightning - if you find a cloud
Then make it pour on Nejd and whoever seeks Nejd

7. And take care of those tents - for in them
Are gazelles who intentionally slay with passion

8. With the new rain, the garden creatures awaken
Renewed, fresh, and glistening

9. And a singing bird who hides the artistry of his white eggs
When he shows us the features of his nest

10. As if the lightning spreads light
Above it or misses it with coldness

11. The sea of joy has ebbed in old age
After it had flowed in youth

12. And time was unjust to us
When it gave little of it and was stingy

13. It was like lightning, ceasing suddenly
Before it could fully ignite for the eye and kindle

14. We could have done without the clouds, even if it was
A nectar between the water-drawers and honey

15. The meadow of Prince Abul-Haija has become the sweetest fruit
And most aromatic flowers

16. A lord who destroys wealth and builds
Encampments under the protection of the stars and glory

17. His gifts have overwhelmed us
Like the downpour of clouds that poured heavily

18. Gratitude is too weak to reward what he purposefully
Conferred and benevolently gave

19. If the watering places were counted, his hand would be
A watering place, continuously conferring gifts

20. He has blocked the way of afflictions, so he remains
Safe from the blows of fate that he dreaded

21. It is enough that the delegation urge on their steeds
With a downpour that overtakes the delegation itself

22. You are the blessed one of the destitute, O son of Sa'id
It is enough for them that you lengthen Sa'd

23. A raincloud that smiles with lightning
While it thunders in calamities

24. It began directing longing for seeing you to me
Heading joyfully to the meadow

25. And slow in pace, it hastens like
How fingers hasten in counting

26. So I remembered vividly your bounty when
The rain poured in the gardens and flowed heavily

27. I am strong in calamities, but I am not
In them as strong against your abandonment

28. I make the time spacious since you blamed me
After I used to make the time spacious with praise

29. So it is as if I see happiness as an enemy
That I avoid along with wine

30. If I were to sip the mouth of a beloved
With cold injustice, I would not feel its coldness

31. Estranged, bitter - and I committed no sin
To be repaid for it with distance and rejection

32. And discarded, spending the night creating patience
Among my intestines or renewing passion

33. When the fortunes of time turned against me
They do not accompany me when you travel with purpose

34. Flaws - if they climbed the rungs of pleasure
They would nearly slide down from them

35. They exposed me to the swords, so every
Part of me became a sheath for their sharpness

36. And they crowned my head with a turban of violence
Violet in its edges, glistening

37. A cloak of the handiwork of the wind, ragged
When worn, disgrace unravels

38. And if I measured your bitter estrangement and
What it reaped, it was the most severe

39. I am free when I claim ancestry, but
Your bounties have made me your slave

40. I do not say the clouds are like your hands
Or the sword like your resolute sharpness

41. You are more decisive than the swords and purer
Than the twisted strands of fiber, soft and bright
