1. These are the teachings from which we learned
So halt, perhaps the caravan will also halt

2. If the clouds' rain does not quench it, it has not withered
Its ruins weep with dripping tears

3. And if it complained of the injustice of time, it has certainly walked
Twisting separation into its borders

4. Our feet found shade under it
And happiness has often journeyed in it, overflowing

5. Days when the beloved promises loyalty
He fulfills, but when he threatens, he breaks his word

6. Like the sun, its light brings safety
Dispelling the darkness of night, or it bends

7. Like a staff, bestowing gifts on its lover
If it neglects, forgetting past kindnesses

8. As if it showed us, with its wine
And beauty, Joseph and the King's feast

9. Why do the slanderers attack me, when
I competed with it in generous vintages?

10. The night's dark forces weaken
So stars revolve in it with twinkling light

11. Until its dawn is unveiled, and I mistook it
For the radiant character of the noble prince revealed

12. A king whose essence is time and its changes
So by his actions time flows evenly

13. If the misers frown, he smiles
Or if they hoard, he spends freely

14. Bestowing his possessions, he rivals
The generous in nature, though the ignoble pretend

15. He unites the progeny of glory with fingers
That gathered the heights' kinship, reconciling them

16. If not for the hand of al-Ghadanfar
The platforms of this glory would be barren wastes

17. The patron glances, so he returns hopeful
The enemy attacks, so retreats defeated

18. A disposition gentler than the breeze, though at times
Its gusts blow fiercely back

19. How often in an arena his swords found no mark
Except on the corpses of the impaled

20. You charge in, shaking the dark spear
Snatching the souls of the foe

21. When his chest is pierced by a stab
He returns swiftly with another, well-prepared

22. Submit to each known virtue
Without you, the world would not know them

23. And don this strange raiment of praise I tailored
As if I tailored it into a cloak

24. From every couplet, if its words took form
You would see them, light upon you, layered

25. And if your palm paused from generosity, turning
Away from me, it was not pausing before

26. I remained deprived in your favor, and yet
I love that my gratitude still appears deprived
