1. The prince is generous and of noble descent
His rank in glory has surpassed all ranks

2. He gives and then the destitute settlers say
"Did his palms produce springs or clouds rain?"

3. A fierce lion who never hides his mane
Until the swords are dyed red with blood

4. Like a lion stripping the enemies of their courage
Yet you see their souls stripped in fright

5. His instincts know no deceit or betrayal
For loyalty, and if he pounces he shows no remorse

6. As for his enemies, his lady has named them
Cowardly, though they are called honorable men

7. A lion, if the land of enemies carried
Forests for the spears, he renders them firewood

8. When you set out to renew glories
You brought the envious grief and worries

9. You made it a home in the heart of the Tigris
Its gardens cannot be reached by traitors or spies

10. The air and water around it are clear
As if refined relations link them

11. The rain flows without cloaks
Not even cooling the snakes of summer

12. It shows you blossoms smiling out of season
And water flows without spring showers

13. And channels upon green banks you'd think
Were clad with green like outspread carpets

14. As if its course bent when a stranger longed
And bent towards his homeland out of yearning

15. The palms are tall and fruitful
Laughing with ripening dates in their clusters

16. Its bushes in the air mature
Either early fruit or fruits that redden late

17. You see in its shade slender branches
But if the sun saw them it would ignite them

18. And vines, intertwining, gather us
To marvel equally at their diverse yields

19. One vine drips sap from its branches
Another vines drips golden drops from its shoots

20. As if the green leaves around them
Are but gowns clothing them in brocade

21. The water meanders and winds through it
As if filled with awe inspiring serpents

22. And a pond whose surging waves cannot hide
What floats in it or sinks to its depths

23. The morning breeze sends it breezes so cold
That were it to still you'd see it solidify

24. Crowned with stars glittering in the dawn
But when night falls they become flaming meteors

25. You see geese frolicking in its playgrounds
As you’d see patterns on damask cloth

26. Lilies blossom over its waters then wither depressed
As lilies mounted above lilies do

27. Tame, while predator birds circle above
Snatching whatever flies off in the horizon and escapes

28. As if the panicked prey bird fears it
For no rapacious bird pays it gold

29. The arrows of its bustling hunter do not return
Until they take whatever prey they desire

30. Loyal, the wars of the North could not defeat it
Though it met them and battled in the skies

31. As if its blessings are reinforced armor
That decreases the piercing spears rising up

32. The palace smiles in the face of dawn
And you see the face of dawn when it reveals itself wan

33. At night above, it talks with Gemini
Draped in a gown of clouds all covered up

34. The throne room leans over when it ascends
Awed - so how can the Arabian steed compare?

35. When palaces trace their lineage back
It ascends to the highest most noble line

36. So renew it - no events have cut you off
And good fortune is endless within it

37. Land, sea and embroidered sand dunes
Where souls seek their wishes wandering between them

38. And an abode whose pillars the eras
Make ever new, when rain pours or plays

39. Its pebbles are scattered pearls and its soil
is fragrant musk - were it not for its guard it would be pillaged

40. And all its landscapes are emeralds
into which Lajeem poured a winding stream

41. If the thought of its banquet calls you
you were not brought up to behave thus before the noble!

42. And if its shade calls you to havens
you would wish your shade and wine to be there

43. Do not call me a liar, for in my praises of you
I speak the truth and do not approve lies

44. One who hopes for high regard in poetry spares no effort
And one who competes with Abu Tighlib is surely vanquished!
