1. They have broken the cord of love, so it was severed
And they ordered the hearts to harden, so they hardened

2. They called out for the separation of the lovers, so
Our tears began to flow for their separation in streams

3. Peace be upon him who went to his beloved wholeheartedly
Yet did not return back safe and submitted

4. A beloved who bid farewell in an ardent embrace
The eve the living one departed from the abode of fever

5. He unties the necklaces of pearls with tears and words
And threads them as jewelry upon himself with a smile

6. He unveiled the sweet lipped beauty from her veil
So she returned veiled in the brocade of shyness

7. And he spoke to me secretly with his tearful eyelids
So the craving of passion thought to converse

8. It is a separation in which we drank death in its cup undiluted
Oh, if only it was wine diluted with pure water

9. A soft and delicate woman who praises his perfect form
If he sways in grace or stands upright

10. She invited me to drink merry tipple after
I reclined, troubled, on pillows of roses

11. So I said, “Pass me the permitted or the forbidden”
“Nothing forbidden comes from your hand”

12. We drank to kindness and beauty a night
In which we saw kindness and beauty as twins

13. The saliva of her sweet mouth smiled at him
As if the lightning of the clouds had smiled

14. He lingered under the raindrops until
The raindrops seemed to feed him the finest wine

15. And he turned towards the downpour as if
It were the drink of Abu Ishaq pouring in streams

16. The bravest man people see as daring in their time
If he were the darkest of creatures, still undaunted

17. A steed whose drink of youth’s waters, if you invoked it
Would chant wishes of bounty upon you insistently

18. When his right hand feeds him drink and is kissed
You’d think his right hand the Black Stone or Zamzam

19. He charges solo when the nights change capriciously
As if a swarming army in disarray

20. When his opinions lightly provoke sedition
His inclination is corrected and destroyed

21. Do the two fools who robbed my poetry’s beauties know
What plunder they divided and seized?

22. What necklaces did I string across seven seas
For their scattered pearls until they were threaded?

I refused him the surrender of praise if he disrobed

24. And the war of denial if he was wrong and confessed
From him comes the taste of pure thought as if

25. He sips a goblet of wine when enjoying its flavor
But when he became angry, polished and weakened,

26. Dejected and wounded in spirit, destined
And pierced linked pearls around necks

27. And spread marked calico on chests

28. Two wolves attacked him; they saw no loyal brother
To protect him from being torn apart

29. Two brigands, if they circled by surprise
Around the Sacred House, would violate its sanctity

30. Their hands have long been too short to reach him
Yet they have now made sacrilege a ladder

31. If a stronghold enclosed him within its pillars
And the army defended him there, he'd not escape them

If Hell prevented him from being damned

33. They would plunge ahead, straight into Hell
They have wronged every free and noble woman

34. With words, if words allowed, would complain
Chaste women - one enamored with her husband

35. Yearning for him, and undefiled

36. One who, if she saw a suspicious glance,
Would veil her eyes and wrist

If her new husband possessed her on their wedding night

38. They would mourn the abandoned husband in grief
Captive women taken by force against their will

39. It was hard for them to be with one unlawful
The deluded one did not touch a scorpion's sting

40. Rather recklessly, he grasped the snake's tail
With a hand that cannot restrain itself from filth

41. From grabbing flesh and bone
A young man's right hand is a dignified limb

42. Do not demean what you should dignity
Perhaps the king’s minister will judge between us

43. And become knowledgeable of the confusing matter
I hope he brings a morn that rips apart

44. The cloak of darkness woven from doubts
When I tested the judgment of the wise

45. I found two groups - one forgiving and one condemning
Clouds of goodness when times are prosperous

46. And moons when affairs are gloomy
Scribes of a king whose arrows do not err
