1. Who will bring back to me the conversations of past eras,
And aspirations that exhausted students' efforts,

2. I pursued them with the breath of a lover whose heart ached
For the parting of friends.

3. I pursued them with the gaze of a yearner whose sighs gathered
For the scattering of companions.

4. The gazelles protected their meadows from the mountain goats
And their does grazed among the dark forests.

5. Every bud of sweet glance yielded two kinds of roses and jasmine,
A meadow refreshed us from the thirst of passion,

6. With its endless promise like a mirage.
By God, a Bedouin woman deceived us,

7. For hypocrisy is the nature of Bedouins.
Her beauty was veiled by tents, and had she appeared,

8. Modesty would have been her finest veil.
Passion settled her in her lover's heart with its endless promise

9. Like the glimmer of a mirage.
Alas! The knots of her lineage did not unravel

10. From a burning agony, nor misfortunes.
Rather, it was a thought which, when pondered,

11. Would blossom into the flower of refinement.
It saddens the gazelles that youth has abandoned

12. The summit of glory and weakened companions.
The glance of the beauties - its secret, when found

13. Was pure modesty in radiant clothes.
How often did we say, when he stood in his shrine,

14. "You and the doll in the shrine are equal!"
O beauty, how the hands of youth adorned its shoulders,

15. And balanced its branches with boughs!
Threats distracted him from his opinions

16. Until he avoided refined manners.
Now hardships have been shortened, so they bite

17. With the prince's dew, like a night of fangs.
From his opinion and sword flashed for us

18. The light of a clear dawn and shooting star.
A king whose right hand is filled with praise

19. And whose left hand is filled with students’ hopes.
Dew interceded for his chastity with dew, as

20. Spring intercedes for a cloud with a cloud.
He forgave and sheathed the swords in their scabbards,

21. Moderated and dyed their blades with blood.
He distinguished between one who falls short of his stature

22. One who lags behind and another who is biased.
You have built your glory, so act with refinement

23. Among the tribes and eloquent peoples.
And you presented yourself to the Prophet and his family

24. Until you quenched their hopes.
So may your victory be honored by the remaining guidance

25. And may the rest of the factions be disgraced by it.
They came to you dyed red with honor,

26. Among the vastness of people and expanse.
It is as if they descended on Yathrib from it or

27. Encamped in Mecca among hills and flat lands.
So make peace, Abu al-Hasan, for a day of nobility,

28. With clouds as its army, and a day of reckoning.
The clothes of fasting did not wear out, emblazoned,

29. Until the Feast clothed you in the garb of reward.
So enjoy an Eid that has returned like its auspicious star,

30. With brilliant light and affirmed reasons.
And adorn it with eloquence of tongue, and yet

31. Eloquence of tongue is the pride of minds.
If it shook al-Walid's hearing he would bow to it -

32. Are they lines of verse or pages of a book?
Rather, if Ibn Aws contemplated it, he would not say,

33. "If only time brought back the return of my youth!"
