1. Dark-skinned beauty unrelated to the dove,
Nor coveting the field of generosity,
١. سوداءُ لم تَنتسِب لِحَامِ
ولم ترُمْ ساحةَ الكِرامِ
2. As if beneath her three maidservants -
Drawers of water from the cistern.
٢. كأنما تحتَها ثَلاثٌ
مُقرِّباتٌ من الحِمامِ
3. In her body a flame plays,
Like the flash of lightning in the dark.
٣. يلعبُ في جِسمها لَهيبٌ
لِعْبَ سَنا البَرقِ في الظَّلامِ
4. Her speech, when it grows faint,
Is ineloquent as speech goes.
٤. لها كلامٌ إذا تَناهَت
غيرُ فصيحٍ من الكَلامِ
5. Though she taste no food,
Her belly is filled with food.
٥. وهي وإن لم تَذُق طَعاماً
مملوءةُ البَطنِ من طَعامِ
6. No friend of hers has failed
To visit, drunk or sober.
٦. لم يخلُ من رِفدِها نَديمٌ
يومَ خُمارٍ ولا نِدامِ
7. And whenever a guest returns,
Studded are the carpets around her.
٧. وَلي إذا الضيفُ عادَ أُخرَى
مُصرَّعٌ حولها سوامي
8. Mighty, when she boils with rage
She melts the dried-out bones in her boiling.
٨. عظيمةٌ إن غلَت أَذَابت
بِغَلْيِها يابسَ العِظامِ
9. As if the jinn had mounted her
Upon three solid pillars.
٩. كأنما الجِنُّ ركَّبَتها
على ثَلاثً من الإِكامِ
10. She has a smoke that confuses
The swooping vultures.
١٠. لها دُخانٌ تَضِلُّ فيه
عَجاجةُ الجحفَلِ اللُّهَامِ
11. As if fire had clothed her
In yellowed coats of mail.
١١. كأنما النارُ ألبَسَتها
مُعَصفَراتٍ من الضِّرامِ
12. Our property has always been free
Without shame or reluctance;
١٢. ولم يَزل مالُنا مُباحاً
من غيرِ ذُلٍّ ولا اهتِضامِ
13. She takes from it a share for food
And the rest for gifts.
١٣. تأخذُ للقُوتِ منه سَهماً
وللنَّدَى سائرَ السِّهامِ
