1. When we were together and the wine was forbidden to us,
We were restless and eager to remove the obstacles,
١. ولمَّا اصطَحَبْنا والخُمارُ يَصُدُّنا
عن الكأسِ عُجْنا والغَلائِلُ تُنزَعُ
2. To the expanse of a bathhouse whose ceiling was like
Agate studded with pearls from al-Lujjayn,
٢. إلى وُسْعِ حَمَّامٍ كأنَّ سَماءَهُ
عَقيقٌ بجَاماتِ اللُّجَينِ مُرَصَّعُ
3. With breasts and intoxicating drinks that delighted
The sights and hearing, nothing more,
٣. وفي الصَّدْرِ قَيْناتٌ وشُرْبُ مُدامَةٍ
يَلذُّ بها مَرآىً وما ثمَّ مَسمَعُ
4. On carpets from its land while its soldiers
Stood watch over its corners humbly,
٤. على سَبَجٍ من أرْضِهِ وجُيوشُه
قِيامٌ على أرجائِها وهي خُشَّعُ
5. We passed the morning there in bliss
And returned while the maidens were asleep.
٥. قَضَيْنا بهِ عندَ الصَّباحِ لُبانَةً
وعُجْنا إليها والعَواتقُ هُجَّعُ
