1. Your conquests restored the joy of eternal rule,
You are God's sword, so ruin befell the foe.

2. Al-Musharrifi extols you with eloquence unleashed,
And Al-Samhari praises you in verses straightforward.

3. The opening revealed in you its wonted marvels,
The clashing of arms proceeding as was customary.

4. It rained on Roman land blood of its people,
A cloud which when it watered the ground yielded praise.

5. Unlike the rain, whenever the stake showed green,
It bent it, giving it a glancing blow.

6. You attacked with a faith in God that incited fervor,
Guarding Islam until you were revived.

7. You split the ample breastplates and what they contained,
And you tore through the linked coats of mail.

8. What a day on which you made them burn,
Refreshing the true faith, cooling and chilling!

9. Many a bejeweled palace you charged on horseback,
So it vanished - you made it disappear for good!

10. He gave you what you wished and commissioned you
To rule, like stars set in a necklace.

11. You exemplified for Him pillars of His mansion,
And you implanted in it rugged immobile mountains.

12. A chest behind the cuirasses you cleaved,
So the spear-thrust made them shake when they clashed.

13. The white slit coats of mail, their openings
Gleamed until the atmosphere turned cold.

14. Every bird in succession warbles above it
When the palm-branches caress it, trilling.

15. In the sheen of dawn it shone, as though
The sun sported with a towering palace.

16. It pours stars whose light is not prevented
By the gloom of black night from glowing red.

17. When the Patarics saw it they deemed it baleful,
But the Pataric conqueror saw it as auspicious.

18. With the lightning of white blades you split the chest
Of a raven, and destiny flashed and rumbled within it.

19. You refused though you had dyed its courtyard blood,
As if you caused the flames of hell to blaze.

20. The East and West were clad by the sword
Of Ibn Abdallah in an extended shadow.

21. It swung the horses from Euphrates water thirstily,
So it was as if they made the two gulfs their watering place.

22. It flies over the litters of Khurasan in them
Passionate women rending cloaks that clothe them.

23. A conflagration overwhelming the abodes until
They seemed to wear the chestnut dye doubly or singly.

24. When the target set up spent the night yellowed
By the birds of arrows from it, it woke up blackened.

25. It passed the night overlooking the lofty tower
As if observing the Pleiades appear then disappear.

26. It dispatched cavalry around it, so they scattered
As the wind disperses clouds turning them to shreds.

27. It passed the night provisioning arms, inciting,
Raiding the lands, and aiding the beleaguered.

28. Every fierce lion with piercing eyes keeps it company
Baring its teeth, glowering, awesome.

29. As though the shafts of writing were rose bushes around their homes
On the plains of horses scattered about.

30. You paraded their dark ones before the white slender ones
And you brought the wave roaring to them insistently.

31. You straightened some of them into beating their flanks
And you ennobled them with al-Musharrafiyyah chanting.

32. You brought the sword’s edge to the summit of Lu’lu’
To mix in it the surah “Strife” with softness.

33. Terror shaking his body parts comes to you
As it shook the unsheathed sword yesterday.

34. Fear lowers its eyelids before you,
And if it tries to dart a glance, it thunders.

35. By the Lord of steely discourse and glances,
You exemplified it, so it recoiled mute and blind.

36. You routed them in a sudden raid, so they became
Far off, the dove of aridity and prostrate.

37. They supposed the western clouds to be a troop
Flashing while the eastern lightning bolted.

38. When the Radiant State named you its sword,
To delight, your summoner to right guidance named you.

39. So the Romans' pride was humbled,
And its subjects through your might became more loyal.

40. When it is said "the State's sword," her throne quaked,
And before that it knelt in worship and prostration.
