1. The youth refused to be silenced by a reproacher
Or to halt the sunset of overflowing tears

2. He recognized the stages through yearning, so he wept blood
For yearning has differing stages

3. Whenever he saw the traces of a departed loved one
He greeted and said, “You rode off on a swift camel”

4. He does not awaken as if the breath of lightning
Dawned on him or the flood of Babel

5. And his way is to face when he has seen
The garment of youth, prey to vanishing old age

6. He met the reproachers unemployed of his patience
So they turned away from my present state of separation

7. You were greeted from hills which gathered their ruins
On the day of initiation, by the question of streaming tears

8. We descend and camp though he is of utmost sanctity
To be disgraced by a rider or horseman

9. How sweet was his drinking place and its people
Between al-Udhayb and the wisdom of one reasonable

10. What we want is between a bare, quivering blade
And a sheathed, withered one

11. The chains of lightning that glanced at the soil
And clad its meadow with necklaces

12. You reminded us of cheer in the shadow of youth
And living in the heedless days of time

13. Days when I concealed my youth from a critic
Intentionally and stole my pleasures from a reproacher

14. Can a glance convey, if I continue it
To one whom no greeting of a connector reaches?

15. I hint about the distant land through another
And restrain the reins of a leaning heart

16. I wish the alive would act with its plains
As the prince acted with the hopeful

17. The Bestower of the necklaces that the gazelles donned
Commended by their chastity with earrings

18. The Giver of the precious soul to the spear
Nobly exceeded in that the limits of a giver

19. The hugging of Abdullah in the ways of elevation
As the bees hug his superiority in futility

20. He carried financial liabilities and pregnancies after him
While glory is the carrying of financial liabilities and pregnancies

21. So time wipes away the ignorance of a predecessor
Who met the earliest predecessors and ancients

22. When he reached maturity, our hopes were realized
Good news of quenching thirst saw the clarity of springs

23. Or like the blinking of lightning—its light kindled—
The flashing of a hillock to the clouds and rain

24. After the eyes of tribes overflowed with sorrow for him
And the patience of tribes was spent

25. Innocent, he tended to us while we were
Drowning in affliction, so he made us mount the coast

26. He came so good fortune was the first rising
With his rise and bad luck the last setting

27. Glories of Wā’il, are you the first master
Whose praise is amplified by the humps of Wā’il?

28. The sword is Allah’s sword—no futile stroke
Was known for it in the arena of heroes

29. The spear transgressed, unjustly, against the unjust
Stabbing and defeating the just from the just

30. The arrow, none faces it during its swiftness
In fright but the God-fearing with fighters

31. The enemies do not finish with you, for they are
Busy defending against your fighting, occupied

32. Their strongholds looked to you, but when
You advanced against them, it was no stronghold

33. You made its lofty, inaccessible peaks touch the ground
As if you had greeted them with earthquakes

34. How much tyranny you erased from the fang of a tyrant
And work of yours that roused one slumbering!

35. I was cured when I dwelled neighboring your abode,
As if I were a neighbor of arriving spring

36. I drank from your rain clouds five surrounding clouds
That poured upon me with five fingers

37. So my praise of you was continuous as if it were
The billows of the flowing, continuous flood

38. I am a horseman—my words substantiated—
So hear the speech of a horseman from a footman

39. And often your indirectness has successful directness
As the pouring cloud’s rain proves true

40. And whenever you obtain composition, I am
The lord of composition while you are the obtaining lord
