سار بي للأمير يشكو اعتراضي
He went to complain about me to the prince,
قال من يعنى بأمري
He said, who will take care of my affairs
مولاي ثانية من ليلك انصرمت
My Master, another night of yours has passed
ألا حدثاها فهي أم العجائب
Tell it, for it is the mother of wonders,
حديث على رغم العلا غير كاذب
A truthful speech despite remoteness, not deceitful
أنتم من مناسب الأمجاد
You are the people of glorious occasions
أدارهم بين الأجارع فالسدر
He led them between rugged valleys and lote-trees
بحيث القباب البيض والأسل السمر
With white domes and brown horses
كن من صروف الردى على حذر
Be wary of the turns of fate,
الحق يعلو والأباطل تسفل
The truth rises while falsehoods sink,
العمر نوم والمنى أحلام
Life is but sleep, and death is a dream
أطاع لساني في مديحك إحساني
My tongue obeyed my kindness in praising you,
قسما بالليل وما وسقا
I swear by the night and all it envelops
لمن علم في هضبة الملك خفاق
Whose banner flutters in the plateau of royalty
عهد الشباب سقى أيامك الأولا
The days of your youth watered the early mornings
جادك الغيث إذا الغيث همى
When rain clouds gather, time of union in al-Andalus
قل لشمس الدين وقيت الردى
Say to the sun of religion, your time has cured affliction
إنما طاشور جعسوس
The blade of Ja'su's axe
مولاي أنت فدائي
My Master, you are my ransom
أرسلت عيني في حلاك بنظرة
I sent my eyes into your encampment with a glance
الحمد لله موصولا كما وجبا
Endless praise to Allah as is deserved
أبدى لداعي الفوز وجه منيب
He showed favor to the caller of success with a submissive face,
لك الحق الذي يجب
You have the right that must be fulfilled
قد كان قلبي مهما
My heart was always responsive
أنت فظ والعطف بالضضد
You're harsh yet gentleness becomes you
كنت آسى على زمان تقضى
I grieved for an era that had passed
يهنيك مقدم عبد الواحد ابنك عن
Your son Abd al-Wahid's arrival gladdens you after
بحق ما بيننا يا ساكني القصبة
By the right of what is between us, O dwellers of the village
لما علاني الشيب قال صواحبي
When age whitened my hair, my friends said to me
من لي بذكرى كلما أوجستها
Who will remind me whenever I miss her
نبه نديمك للصبوح وهاتها
Awaken your companion at dawn and bring her to me
وبيض كدود القز زاد اشتباهها
With pearls white as silk worm's cocoons her mistake grew
ما رأت عيني عجيبا
My eyes have never seen
هب النسيم معطر الأراج
The gentle breeze carries fragrant aromas,
أهلا بطيف زارني غسق الدجى
Greetings to a vision that visited me when the darkness of night fell,
قل للأشوني ولا تحتشم
Say to Ashsha'uniy and do not be ashamed,
هو النصر باد للعيون صباحه
It is victory whose morning is evident to all eyes
عبد العزيز خليفة الله الذي
Abdul Aziz, Caliph of Allah whose guidance attained triumph through his determination; hence the gift of his aspiration expressed his valor and leniency - hail it, O homeland of struggle - revealing covenants of his vigor and shelters; So the steeds represent his roots, the dates his morals, the fragrance his eulogies; its softness the stars of his night and its scripture the dawn of his morn; its weapons set with determination or fully clad preserving the integrity of his righteousness. You renewed your father’s covenant in supporting it when you drew light from his lantern; your strife for the Caliphate ever succeeds, drawing rain from the clouds of its winds; the banner of your victory sets out a cloud that strews the conquests with the strokes of its spears.
أنا من خالص الحديد غدير
I am of pure steel a flowing stream
ما على القلب بعدكم من جناح
After you all, my heart has no desire
هل كنت تعلم في هبوب الريح
Did you know, in the blowing wind’s breath
أهل سلا صاحت بهم صائحة
The people of Sala were struck by a cry
يا سيدي الأوحد الأسمى ومعتمدي
O my only supreme master and reliance
قفا فاسألا في ساحة الأجرع الفرد
Stop, and ask in the wilderness of Al-Ajraʿ Al-Fard
عجبا لوجد لا يلين شديده
How strange is the firmness of passion that burns unflinchingly,
الشكر يصغر والهبات تزيد
Gratitude grows small though gifts increase
ثنى الصعدة السمراء من لين قده
He bent his slender, dark ascent,
الصبر إلا في هواك حميد
Patience, except for your love, is praiseworthy
مقامك مرفوع على عمد السعد
Your station is raised on pillars of good fortune,
جاء العذار بظل غير ممدود
The cloud came with infinite beauty
قال لي صاحبي وقد بان زهدي
My friend said to me, when my indifference was revealed
لو لم يكن واديكم باردا
If your valley were not so cold
إنا بني نصر إذا ما أطلعت
We are the sons of victory, when there appears
أرقت فجنح الليل قيد خطوه
I was awake; the wings of night were folded
في غير حفظ الله من هامة
Without God's protection from anxiety
عندما لاحت بعيني برده
When her coldness caught my eye,
عذار كما دب الحباب على الورد
Persuasion crept over the rose like dew
يا قائدي نحو الغرام بمقلة
Oh my guide to love with a glance
منكانة الرمل فيها عبرة ونهى
From the abode of sand a lesson in transience we draw
أمط عنك مهما اسطعت كل إرادة
Cast off from yourself whatever strong will you display,
وكريمة شهد الخضاب شهادة
And a generous woman whose henna bore witness
كأني قرص الشمس عند طلوعها
As if I were the sun's disk at sunrise,
جنابك محفوظ وسعدك سافر
Your protection is guarded, and your happiness travels,
وقالوا الجزيرة قد صوحت
They said the island had called out
يحييك بالريحان والروح من قبر
He revives you with basil and spirit from a grave
هلم إليها فإنها دار
Come to it, for it is a house
جنى النسيم علي
The breeze gathered me in
يا فارس الأجواد بين سفينة
O knight of the generous steeds between a
أيا أهل هذا القطر ساعده القطر
O people of this land who the fate has helped
أوصيك بالشيخ أبي بكره
I advise you about Sheikh Abi Bakrah
وظبي لأوضاع المجال مدرس
A teacher well-versed in the ways of elegance
أقول والبدر يسمو في السما صعدا
I shine and the full moon rises in the sky
ولما اجتلينا من نجوم قبابنا
When we had dispelled the stars in our celestial sphere
ثعبان نهر راعنا قده
A serpent, lengthy, glided from his lair
لخير بني نصر صنعت محمد
For the best of Nasr's sons I was made, Muhammad,
إن بان منزله وشطت داره
If his abode appears and his house is demolished
سهرنا وفي سير النجوم اعتبارنا
We stayed up as the stars moved on
إذا نزع الأثواب جعسوس خلته
When J'esous doffs his rags, behold
النصر نصك والحسام دليله
Victory is your ally, the sword your guide
يا من تقلد للعلاء سلوكا
O you who has adopted the ways of the virtuous
السعد جندك والقضاء دليل
Good fortune is your army and destiny your guide
إن شمس الدين فخر الملوك
The sun of the faith, pride of kings,
أفل الألى كانوا نجو
Have the noble ones faded, they were
سلو عن فؤادي بعدكم كيف حاله
Ask how my heart is after you,
لا تهج بالذكر من جلدي
Do not stir with memory in my skin
ودعت منك فؤادي يوم ترحالي
I bade farewell to my heart the day I departed
ما أوبق الأنفس إلا الأمل
Nothing ruins souls like false hopes do,
قلت وقد ألبس جسمي الضنا
I said, though sorrow had clothed my body
بين السهام وبين كتبك نسبة
Between your arrows and your writings there is a proportion
هم أن ينتف ذقني
He thought to pluck my beard
لا أعدم الله دار الملك منك سنا
May God not deprive the abode of sovereignty of you for years to come
إذا فاتني ظل الحمى ونعيمه
When the shade and comfort of ardour evade me
رأيت بكفك اعتبارا
I saw in your palm such wonders
فتحت سعودك كل باب مبهم
Your good fortune opened every ambiguous door,
أما لو علمنا أنه ينطق الرسم
Should we but know that the drawing speaks,
إذا أنا لم أوثر هواي على عزمي
If I do not prefer my desire over my determination,
تعلم طيفوري خلال سميه
My bird learned in its cage's confinement
شيخ رباط إن أتى شادن
A Sufi hermit, should a giddy youth
علم الملوك أعني
The banner of kings do I mean
قلم المحاسن خط نون عذاره
The pen of beauty has drawn the N of his charm,
حيى ربوع الحي من نعمان
The splendor of life revived Na'man's meadows
ولما رأت عزمي حثيثا على السرى
When she saw my determination firmly set on parting
ذكروا العهود فهاج من أشجاني
They recalled the covenants so longing stirred in me,
أسائلكم هل من خبير بسلوان
I ask you, is there anyone well-versed in the affairs of Sulayman?
يعاهدني دمعي على كتم سره
My tears pledge to conceal their secret
حلفت لهم بأنك ذو يسار
You swore to them that you were generous, trustworthy and honest
أفقد جفني لذيذ الوسن
Sweet sleep has left my eyes
وذي زوجة تشكو فقلت له اسقها
And one whose wife complained, so I said give her
وقالوا بدت منكم على الجسم حمرة
They said the redness on your body has appeared
قال لي عندما أتى بجدال
When he came at me with arguments
مولاي إن أذنبت ينكر أن يرى
My Lord, if I sin, it would be unfitting
بان يوم الخميس قرة عيني
My solace appeared on Thursday
أبقاك ظلا للعباد وملجأ
I have kept the translated poem. Here is the translation:
ياليت شعري هل يقضى تألفنا
I wish I knew, will our affection be fulfilled
انظر إليه شبيه معجزة العصا
Look at him, resembling the miracle of Moses's staff
والله ما جان على ماله
By God, no soul that defends its honor
ما ضر لو سلم أو ودعا
What harm if he bid farewell or took leave,
مشرف دار الملك ما باله
The supervisor of the king's residence, what is wrong with him
ياروضة للأدب المجتنى
O garden of refined literature
إذا ما النفس مالت نحو حسن
If the soul inclines towards beauty
الدهر أضيق فسحة في أن يرى
The days are too narrow to be seen
زارت ونجم الدجى يشكو من الأرق
The star of dusk complained of insomnia,
يا بقعة بالجمد معروفة
O spot on the frost well known
ما لليراع خواضع الأعناق
What ails the meadows, their necks bowed in submission,
تخالف جنس الشوق والحكم واحد
The nature of longing differs, yet judgment is one
ولرب زرق عدى لقيت مواجها
And I have faced many blue-eyed foes
أخجلتني يا مخجل الشمس
You embarrassed me, o embarrasser of the sun
غضب الإلاه على بني عيس
The god was angered with the clan of Esa
أطلعن في سدف الفروع شموسا
The suns peered out from the foliage of branches,
خصصت بالحسن وانفردت به
Where the roses of beauty grow
حنت لخضر ربي وزرق مياه
She yearned for the green of her Lord and the blueness of water,
قد كان يسكر شربه
The drinking of it would make me drunk
للعين من عمة البني معتبر
The eye has a lesson from the boon of sight
يا من ترحل والرياح لأجله
Oh you who travels and for whom the winds blow
تذكرت عهدا للشباب الذي ولى
I recall a pact with youth that passed away,
تبلج بالشبيبة صبح شيبي
My youth was illuminated by old age's dawn
إن رأى الحق فيك منك بقية
If truth sees in you a remnant
مهما جرت في أذني لفظة
No matter what words may reach my ears,
زمن الأنس كلما ولى
The time of intimacy, whenever it passes
الأصيل ارتدى بثوب شحوب
The authentic wore a dress of pallor
صبوت وهل عار على الحر إن صبا
I yearned, but is it shameful for the free man if he yearns?
أيا ربة السعد المساعد والأنس
O mistress of happiness, aid, and companionship
ملكت رسول الله رقي فمن يبرح
You possessed the Messenger of Allah as a healing, so who would depart?
الشيب نبه ذا النهى فتنبها
Gray hair warned the heedless one to wake,
وبحري تلاعب في شريط
A sea played on a strip
كل أذى فاجعله ما شئته
Make of all harm what you will
فلاحتنا لها القدح المعلى
Our farming has the polished sickle
سمي خليل الله أحييت مهجتي
You have revived my passions, O friend of God
قال جوادي عندما
My faithful steed said when
كم ليوم الفراق من غصه
How heavy is the day of parting
عمامة البني مشهورة
The turban of the young man is well-known
بغيضة وحش الليل خوف ووحشة
With the rage of the beast of night, fear and loneliness
إن شهرت نصلي بدا يوسف
Our swords flashed like Joseph's smile
إذا جعسوس جاء الى صلاة
When a spy comes to pray
يوم أزمعت عنك طوع البعاد
The day I decided to leave you behind
ناديت مبتهلا وقد جن الدجى
I called out pleading when the darkness fell
حللت حلول الغيث في البلد المحل
You descended like rain in the country, bestowing grace
فلاحة مثلي ممقوتة
My farming, like me, is despised
ساورت أسود من ظلام دجى
I rode through the blackness of darkest night
قل للذي ذكر الهدى وعهوده
Tell the one who recalled guidance and its covenants
بعثت له إذا ابتعنا عصيرا
I sent to him when we bought juice
مولاي يهنيك المطر
My Lord, may the rain delight you,
عد عن كيت وكيت
Forget Kait and Kait
قلت لما أتى الكتاب بعنوان
When the book arrived with its title
دعاها تشم آثار نجد ففي نجد
He invited her to scent the traces of Najd, so
رفعت قصة اشتقاقي ليحيى
My story of longing was raised to Yahya
لمحبرة البني وقف يقوتها
The brown-skinned beloved has an income that sustains her
سرق الدهر شبابي من يدي
Time has stolen my youth from my hands,
يا ابن الخلائف يا سمي محمد
O son of caliphs, O eminent Mohammed
تألق نجديا فأذكرني نجدا
My homeland shone radiantly, so it reminded me of Nejd,
باتت نجوم الأفق دون علاكا
The stars of the horizon slept beneath your height,
يا صانعي لله ما أحكمته
O Maker of mine, how skillfully You have made it!
وقالوا عجبنا لضحك المشيب
They said, we are amazed at the laughter of old age
من لا نصيب لصحبه في خيره
He who gives his friends no share of his wealth
أصبحت سهما من كنانة صائبا
You have become an arrow from Kinanah, hitting
حلف الليل بالثلاث يمينا
The night swore three oaths
أنا طاق تزهو بي الأيام
I am a vessel overflowing with the days
نزلنا حلة الخلط الكرام
We descended in the raiment of noble pilgrim garb
مولاي يا خير ملوك الورى
My Master, O best of kings
أمولاي استزد بالشكر صنعا
Increase your gratitude as a grace
يا من به للملة استبشار
O You upon whom the nation seeks counsel
كأنا بتامسنا نجوس خلالها
As though we were touching its purity as we passed through,
يا قادما وافي بكل نجاح
O you who come with all success
رموا بالسلو حليف الغرام
They threw arrows at the bosom friend of love
وطموح العباب ضافي المقيل
The ambitions of youth, harbinger of dusk,
ساعة أولى من الليل انقضت
The first hour of night has passed,
ومدحي على الأملاك وقف وإنما
My praise of kingdoms is a waqf - an endowment,
مررت بالعشاق قد كبروا
I passed by the lovers, they had grown old
يا سراج الجمال يا ابن سراج
O lamp of beauty, O son of the lamp
قد زرت قبرك يا أبا الشرف
I visited your grave, O noble father,
يادرة للمجد مكنونة
O pearl hiding glory within,
يا من بأكناف فؤادي ربع
Homesick
تعلقته من دوحة الجود والباس
I have made it a wand of generosity and power
قد قامت الحجه
The proof has been established,
وأحول يعدي القلب سقم جفونه
Illness passes from his eyelids to afflict the heart
بشرى تقوم لها الدنيا على قدم
Good tidings rise for which the world stands on its feet
سبق القضاء وأبرم المحتوم
Destiny has prevailed and fate accomplished
لما رأوا أنني به كلف
When they saw that I was enraptured by her
لي حبيب لست أعصي أمره
I have a beloved I cannot disobey
روع بالي وهاج بلبالي
My mind was troubled and my thoughts were disturbed,
لما رضيت بفرقتي وبعادي
When you were pleased with my separation and distance,
بعثت بشيء كالجفاء وإنما
I sent something like aloofness, yet
إن كان يسقي الأرض جود غمامة
If the clouds' generosity waters the land
أعاتب دهرا لا يصيخ إلى عتب
I reproach a fate that lends no ear to blame
يا سيد السادات جئتك قاصدا
O master of masters, I come to you
دعانا الى بنيونش وهي جنة
He called us to Buniounish, which is a noble garden
لعل خيالا منك يطرق مضجعي
Perhaps an apparition of you visits my bed
يا رسول الصبا فديتك بلغ
O messenger of the morning breeze, I ransom you
أأزاهير رياض
Are they gardens’ flowers
وقف الغرام على ثناك لساني
Love stood still on the tip of my tongue
قالوا وقد عظمت مبرة خالد
They said - and Khaled's hospitality has grown -
راش زماني وبرى نبله
My age spread around and bore its arrows,
أيوسف دم للملك تعلي بناءه
O Joseph, you built a palace for the king
وقوراء من قوس الغمام ابتغوا لها
And of the rainbow from the bow of clouds they sought
قدم البنفسج وهو نعم الوارد
The violet came, and what a welcome visitor
وافى لعطفتك البشير فلو غدت
The herald came with your kindness, else had
قد كنت أجهد في التماس صنيعة
I used to make every effort to find a friend
هذي ثمان قد قطعن الدجى
These eight have crossed the dark night
لا يسوء ظنك من أجل سهم
Do not think ill of one because of an arrow
سكن الحب فؤادي وعمر
Love settled in my heart and took up residence
جعلت إليك الله والملأ الأعلى
I have nothing to output except the poem translation.
عابوا وقالوا بساقه شعر
They jested and said that his leg was hairy
إن أكن غيركم نظرت بعيني
If I were other than yours I looked with my eyes
أشكو إلى الله من بثي ومن شجني
I complain to God of my anguish and my sorrow
ودرة نور في غلاف زبرجد
A pearl of light in an emerald case
يا سبتة العزفيين الألى درجوا
O Sebta, home of the most melodious musicians who have passed
فقت الحسان بحلتي وبتاجي
I lost my beauty and my crown,
إذا سرت سار النور حيث تعوج
When you travel, light travels wherever you turn
برابعة الساعات جئت أخبر
At the fourth hour I came to announce
يا والي العمر وألقابه
O guardian of life and its titles
سقت ساريات السحب ساحة فاس
The clouds' water-carriers rained down on the square of Fez
ترفع عن سلطان لحظك حاجبه
His brow spurned the dominion of your glance,
نسبت لي المساوي اعتسافا
You attributed sins to me as a confession,
فؤادي مأمور ولحظك آمر
My heart is commanded and your glance is the commander
تخال عند المزج إبريقنا
Our goblets seem to kiss
بتافلفلت برغوث كثير
A grasshopper chirped and rustled loudly
ظمئت إلى السقيا الأباطح والربى
The pastures and the deserts thirst for the watering places,
بأوت على زمني همة
I wandered in my time with determination
أضرم النار في الحشائش يحيى
Yahya set the grass aflame
وكأنما صور الزجاج وقد رمت
As though the glass portraits had been pelted
قلت إذ وجه لي حبا من الرمان حبي
When my love gave me a slice of pomegranate, I said:
من لي به أسمر حلو اللما
Who will lend me the one whose tan complexion is sweet as dew?
قبلته حلو المراشف أسمرا
I kissed him, sweet upon the pillow, dark
بتنا نكابد هم القحط ليلتنا
We suffered the distress of drought through the night
ماذا أحدث عن بحر سبحت به
What can I say about an ocean I've swum in?
إن الهوى لشكاية معروفة
Love's complaint is well known
مولاي ست من الظلام مضت
My Master, six nights of darkness have passed
قد صح في سنن النبي محمد
My superiority over silk brocade is established
قالوا كلفت به غلاما حالكا
They told me you were captivated by a youth in the bloom of life
ولم لا ولي قلب لبعدك خافق
Why does my heart not throb with longing for your absence?
انظر إليها تجد حب الملوك بها
Look at it, you will find the love of kings in it
هون على النفس النفيسة أمرها
Make life's burden light upon your precious soul
وقائلة صف لي فديتك رحلة
A questioner asked, describe for me, I implore you, a journey
غشيان مثواك مثوى الجود يوم ندى
The paradise is your dwelling place the day of prosperity,
ركب السفينة واستقل بأفقها
He boarded the ship and set sail for the horizon
شوق نفسي الى كلامك يحكي
My longing for your words tells
ما اسم إذا زدته ألفا من العدد
What name, if you add a thousand to its number
الحمد لله كم لله من جود
Praise be to Allah, how much goodness Allah has
مضجعي فيك عن قتادة يروي
My bed in you tells of Qatadah
يا مصطفى الرحمان والنور الذي
O Mustafa, mercy of the Merciful and the light
يا وارث المهدي في الجبل الذي
O heir of the Mahdi in the mountain which
لا جادك الغيث إذا ما سقى
When rain waters you, how splendid you are!
أنا روضة وجه الأمير محمد
I am a garden, and the face of Prince Muhammad
يا بني السادة الكرام نداء
O noble and generous people, a call
إذا نمت للأمن فوق سرير
If you sleep in peace upon your bed,
كفلت عنايتك الجميلة
Your care has guaranteed for me attaining high ambition
بمقام إبراهيم عذ واصرف به
By Abraham's station turn, reflect, be wise,
هنيئا بالقدوم من الزيارة
Welcome back from your visit,
لم أجد فيه لين بث لقلبي
I did not find in it, a gentle solace for my heart,
لشمس الدين زوج ضج منها
The sun of faith has a vexed spouse
أجاد يراع الحسن خط عذاره
He excelled in composing verses of passion
أرى كل فتك للحاظ انتسابه
I see that every ruin owes its collapse to Fate,
أخي فترة السلوان جاء رسولها
My brother, the era of tranquility has come, its messenger has arrived
أبا مالك أنت نجل الملوك
O Abu Malik, you are the son of kings,
قال لي والدموع تنهل سحبا
He said to me while tears flowed down
لا ناقة لي في صبري ولا جمل
I have no patience nor endurance
قلت لما استقل مولاي زرعي
I said when my Master saw that my crop was scanty,
إن الإمارة كالسماء وإنما
The emirate is like the sky
لما رأت راية القيسي زاحفة
When she saw the banner of Qais approaching,
بليل كانون عرفت الجوى
In a December night I felt the passion,
مررت بوادي النمل من فوق خده
I passed by the valley of ants above its cheek
جلس المولى لتسليم الورى
The Master sat to bid farewell to pilgrims
ما ثم إلا ما رأيت
There is naught but what mine eyes have seen
أقول وقد جاء الغلام بثردة
I say, as the boy brought a coat
يا إمام الهدى وأي إمام
O Imam of guidance, what an Imam you are!
سألنا ربيع ألعام للعام رحمة
We asked the spring rain for mercy upon the year,
صاح ما أعطر القبول بنمه
O companion, how fragrant are the settlements with dew!
هنيئا بما خولت من رفعة الشان
Congratulations on the high rank you've been granted
إذا كان فوقي من نداك غمامة
When above me there is a cloud from your calling,
لمجدد الملك الرفيع محمد
For the elevating renewer of the kingdom, Muhammad,
قالت إذا استخبرتها عن زوجها
When I asked her about her husband
سبع مضت من زمان الليل وا أسفي
Seven have passed of the night's time, and woe to me,
تعددت الألفاظ واتحد المعنى
The words have multiplied yet the meaning is one
على قدر ما يلتاح من ذلك الحسن
In proportion to what is attained of that beauty
تعرفت أمرا ساءني ثم سرني
I was made aware of something that saddened me, then gladdened me
سقى دارهم هام من السحب هامع
The clouds rained generously on their homes
حين ساروا عني وقد خنقتني
When they left and choking tears
حدث عن الكدية من شئته
Tell whoever you wish about Kudya
أألقي الى الأيام فضل مقادتي
I cast my days ahead in anxious thought,
ماذا أحدث في صنيع خلافة
What can I say of the making of a caliphate
رفقا بنفسك سيدي رفقا
Be gentle with yourself, my lord, be gentle,
يا إماما أطال ربي علاه
O Imam, may my Lord prolong your glory,
انظر الى ينعي وحسن بسوقي
Look at my softness and the beauty of my market
يا مصطفى من قبل نشأة آدم
O Mustafa, before the creation of Adam
خليلي إن يلف اجتماع بخالد
My darling, if a gathering brings me with Khaled

أمير كأن قمير الدجى
A prince like the full moon of dusk
جعسوسكم موحش المرأى وربتما
Your ungainly figure is unpleasant to the eye, though song and music can lighten your troubles and make them seem small.
قيل لي ماتت فراشه
They said a moth died
تقهقه عند رؤيته الثكالى
He giggles at the sight of widows
كفاه فضلا أن امتاحت معارفه
It suffices him as merit that his knowledge encompasses
خضبتها بعدما لاح المشيب وقد
I dyed it after the gray hair appeared, and I
ترى لهذا السير من منتهى
Does this journey have an end,
حمى الفلك الدوار جفني عن الكرى
The revolving celestial sphere has robbed my eyes of sleep
أبا جعفر إن الثقيل الذي ثوى
O Abu Ja'far, indeed the dear one who stayed
أعيى اللقاء علي إلا لمحة
Meeting you is but a fleeting glimpse
وصلت حثيث السير فيمن فلى الفلا
I reached with hasty steps those who had turned away,
رب ليل ظفرت بالبدر
Many a night I gained the full moon,
نفخ المثاني ثم سوى عوده
The flutist blew then straightened his reed
أقلامنا الواسطيه
Our moderate pens
اسقياني لقد بدا الفجر
Quench my thirst, for dawn has appeared
يا عمادي صح عني أنني
Oh my pillar, it is true I am your slave, student, and companion
إن تورعت أصبحت حوزة
If I were to show restraint, then rulership
ترى حلل الإعراب في رؤية العين
You see the adornments of grammar in the vision of the eye
أحبك يا مغنى الجلال بواجب
I love you, O melody of majesty, as my duty
يا ليلة ساهرت طالع أفقها
O night I stayed up gazing at its horizon
وليلة أنس باح منا بها الهوى
And a night of intimacy, from us desire woke
صدني عن لقاء نجلك عذر
My poor health prevents me from meeting your son
أما وخيال في المنام يزور
Though you visit me in dreams,
إليك مددت الكف في كل لأواء
To You I stretched my palms in every tribulation,
وهت مني القوى بطريق شاط
My strength has failed me on the path of Shati
نعمنا بوصل من حبيب مساعد
We were blessed by the union with a beloved helper,
نعم لولاك ما ذكر العقيق
Yes, without you the agate would not be mentioned
أقول لخل سامني فهم ما حوى
I say to the one who reproached me, do not pretend to understand what I have concealed
بنفسي حالك شبه السويدا
My soul is like one afflicted with black bile,
خطب ألم فأذهب الأخ والأبا
Woes struck with grief, taking brother and father away
حكم الجفون على فؤادي ماضي
The judgment of my eyelids against my heart has passed
حفيد ولي الله ذي الرتبة العليا
O grandson of the Supreme Saint
لنا في الفخر أسنمة مطلة
We boast of glories long unfurled,
سقى طلل الحي الذي أنتم به
The youth who you are enamored with quenched thirst
لي الله من عنوان ملك مجدد
God has granted me the glory of renewed kingship
من استغضبت من هذي الخليقه
You were angered at this creation,
ودير أنخنا في قرارته العيسا
In a monastery we resided, where Jesus
أبا قاسم لازلت للفضل قاسما
O Abu Qasim, you have remained just in dispensing virtue,
قلت اعشقوا عين البذول التي
I said love the eye of the stingy one in whom
قصدت الى المولى أبي عمر الرضى
I went to my Master Abi Umar al-Ridha
أبشر فقد نلت ما ترجو على عجل
Rejoice, for you have obtained what you hope for in haste,
أأبصرتنا كالشهب والشمس فتية
Did you see us like shooting stars and suns, young men,
يرى جسدي فيكم غرام ولوعة
My body sees in you passion and anguish
عيني جنت فعلام تحرق أضلعي
My eyes turned into gardens, so why does my chest burn?
تفر عن الشيب الغواني تعززا
The young women shun old age as though it were leprosy,
أنا إلى الله وإنا له
Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return
أبو عنان خير مستخلف
Abu Inan is the best successor
قسما بالكواكب الزهر
By the stars and the flowers just dimmed
أبيت إلا كرما
You refused anything but generosity
برئت لله من حولي ومن حيلي
I disavow all around me and all my tricks,
يا نفس لا تصغي إلى سلوة
O soul, do not listen to the allurement
زارت وقد صرف العنان الغيهب
She came after the dusk had pulled the reins of disappearance,
أمولاي خذها بنت فكري تغيبت
My hopes, take them, a daughter of my thoughts has vanished
لعنوا بريا من خبائث ظنهم
They cursed an innocent with their evil assumptions,
أنا ملعب الوصل الذي يشرح الصدرا
I am the game of union that gladdens the chest,
من طلب الود من سلاوي
He who seeks affection from the wicked
يا إماما غدا لدين ودنيا
O leader for religion and life tomorrow
إذا ما تجلى النور في جنح ظلمة
When light shines through darkness’ wing
شغلت بيوم العرض عمن وسيلتي
I was preoccupied with the Day of Reckoning from the one whose means I was
تولى ابن صفوان فلا ربع بعده
The son of Safwan has passed away, so no trace remains after him
ما للسهى بادي النحول كأنه
What ails the lean boy, looking around in fear
هنيئا أبا الفضل الرضا أو أبا زيد
Congratulations Abu Al-Fadl Ar-Rida or Abu Zayd
أرضوان لا توحشك فتكة ظالم
Do not let the injustice of an oppressor sadden you
كتبت بدمع عيني صفح خدي
I wrote with the tears of my eyes on the page of my cheek
أقول ووعد الصبح يمطله الدجى
I say, and the promise of dawn is delayed by darkness
ومولع بالكتب يبتاعها
Passionate for books, he buys them
بنفسي وما نفسي علي بهينة
By myself, and my soul is not light to me,
قلت للشيب لا يربك جفائي
I said to gray hair, do not let my coldness alarm you
أخي لا تقل كذبا إن نطقت
My brother, do not say lies when you speak
ولما تناهى ورد خدك نظرة
When your cheek's rose has fully bloomed, alluring,
نزلنا على يعقوب نجل أبي حدو
We descended upon Jacob, son of my father Haddu
إذا كان عين الدمع عينا حقيقة
If tears' eyes are really eyes,
ما غض مني أن أخلفت موعودي
It does not anger me that you broke your promise,
زحفت إلي ركائب البرغوث
The fleas' cavalry crept towards me,
لك الله فيما تنتحيه وما تقضي
God is with you in what you choose and decree
تعرفت قرب الدار ممن أحبه
I knew the proximity of the house of the one I love
أقول والليل أعياني تطاوله
I say, and the night that is too long for me
سقى علم الحنان فالجزع فالبانا
Irrigated are the flags of affection, then the trunks, then the branches
تتعاور القطبان منها رقعة
The two poles take turns over it, a patch
بنيونش أسمى الأماكن رفعة
Banyunash is the most sublime of places
وقالت حلقت الكس مني بنورة
She said, "I shaved my head for you out of despair,
مولاي مذ بعدت دياري لا تسل
My Master, since I left my home I do not ask
أحدثكم وهو عن طرفة
I speak to you while being inexplicit
ماذا لقينا بماغوس من اللغط
What did we endure in Magoos at night
قالوا لخدمته دعاك محمد
They said you were called to serve Muhammad
أيحيى سقى حيث لحت الحيا
O Yahya, you gave drink where life was revived,
وكأن جنح الليل أسود سارق
As though night's dark winged thief
قد مررنا بدار عبو الوالي
We passed by the house of 'Abbū al-Wālī
رجعنا بحول الله بعد استدارة
By God's grace we returned after a revolution
أشكو لمبسمه الحريق وقد حمى
I complain of his scorching smile though he has withheld
أإخواننا لا تنسوا الفضل والعطفا
O brothers, do not forget the favor and kindness
ألحظك أم سيف عمرو أعيدا
Do I see you or Amr's sword raised anew?
لله بنيونش تحكي منازلها
For God, Banu Yunus's houses speak of their dwellings
يا ربة البيت الممنع جاره
O mistress of the guarded house whose neighbor
ألا عد عن ذكر الرحيق المفدم
No more reminiscing about spilt wine,
رأت والليل قد سدل الرواقا
She saw as night had let down its curtains,
أثار سراها والديار نوازح
Its homes and dwellings aroused longing,
سعودك لا ما تدعيه الكواكب
Your good fortune lies not in what the stars claim,
بشرى يقوم لها الزمان خطيبا
Good tidings, for which time stands up to eulogize
كيف آمنتما على الشرب ظبيا
How could you trust a gazelle to serve the wine?
قد حرك الجلجل بازي الصباح
The anklets jingled at the break of dawn
ما عمة البني إلا
The essence of girls is but
أحب لحبها جملي ورحلي
For her love I love my camel and saddle,
فعل الخاطر المصدق فعلا
The truthful intuition acted
أعمادنا السامي العلى وأبانا
Our pillars, lofty and sublime, and our fathers,
شرقت بعبرتي لما تغنت
I shed a tear when the fair maiden sang
رأى عارضي لما رأى سقم بطنه
When the quack saw my sickness of belly
بتاجرة ريح أراحك بردها
With peddlers the wind has rested you with its coldness
بأبي بدر غزاني
By my father Badr invaded me
نبا الجنب مني عن وثير مهده
My companionship kept me from resting in my bed
يا نسيم الصبا على الأوراق
O breeze of the morning blowing on the leaves
لقد زالت اللأواء وارتفع الجهد
The hardships have passed, the efforts bore fruit,
ياساكني مرفأ الشواني
O dweller of the harbors of passion
أمولاي دمت الدهر منصور أعلام
My master, you have remained victorious banners
لم لا تنال العلى أو يعقد التاج
Why do you not attain the heights, or wear the crown?
سقى الله من غرناطة متبوأ
Allah has watered from Granada the exalted
قالوا ولائم مولانا مجالسها
They said the gatherings of our master are
أدرها بين مزمار وعود
Turn it between a flute and a lute,
لبسنا فلم نبل الزمان وأبلانا
We wore but did not don the times, and we wore out,
والله لو كانت حياتي في يدي
By God, if my life were in my hands
أيا سبع الميدان غير مدافع
O lion of the battlefield, unrelenting,
ولما دعاني داعي الهوى
When the caller of passion called me
وخف لتوديعي وتشييع رحلتي
He hurried to bid me farewell and see me off on my journey
وذي حيل يعي التقية أمره
Scheming is his business, deception his resort
تأمل الرمل في المكان منطلقا
Contemplate the sand in its place flowing
مولاي مولاي إن أرضاك بذل دمي
My Master, my Master, if pleasing you means my blood is shed
إن اللحاظ هي السيوف حقيقة
Indeed glances are swords in reality
أما والذي تبلى لديه السرائر
By Him in whose presence secrets are disclosed,
يا هلالا يا قضيبا يا رشا
O crescent moon, O slender bow, O shower of rain
أكرم بها من بناء باني
Honor it with a builder's structure
يا بني عبد الله احتسابا
O son of Abdullah, be patient
إنما كان ريقك العذب شهدا
Your sweet saliva was honey
أبا ثابت كن في الشدائد ثابتا
O Abu Thabit, be steadfast in adversity
بشراك للملك في علياك تمهيد
Good tidings of kingship are for you in your heights
خدع اليراع بها فدبجها
The shepherd was deceived by it, so he embroidered it,
أصابتك يا عين عين الحسد
Envy's eye has stricken you, O mine eye,
كل جار لغاية مرجوه
Every person heading towards a hoped for goal
نديمي عللني بمشمولة واسق
My friend, refresh me with a sip and pour,
جزيت ياابن رسول الله أفضل ما
You have been rewarded, O son of Allah's Messenger, with the best reward
نبيت على علم يقين من الدهر
I grew up with certain knowledge of fate
عن باب والدك الرضى لا أبرح
I will not stop seeking your father's approval
عندي لموعدك افتقار محوج
I yearn intensely for our promised time
لم في الهوى العذري أو لا تلم
Blame me or don't for my innocent love,
مولاي ياذا الجلال الباهر العالي
My Master, O You of awe-inspiring, lofty majesty
نادتني الأيام عند لقائه
The days called me when we met
كأنما قرنه في صفح مرهفه
As though its horn were in the flat of his forehead,
والي الولاة وواحد الزمن الذي
O governor of governors, unique one of the age
وجودك حي الملك والدين والدنيا
Your existence revives the kingdom, religion, and life
بلد قد غزاه صرف الليالي
A land invaded by the passage of nights
أعشاق غير الواحد الأحد الباقي
O lovers of others besides the One, the Eternal
أنعام أرضك تقهر الآسادا
The animals of your land subdue lions
لما رأيت الأرض دونك قدرها
When I saw the earth beneath you as worthless dust,
قلت يا ناق كل مال وجاه
I said: O camel, all property and status,
والله ما أبقوا لعذل غاية
By God, they left no excuse unpursued
أجلك أن يلم بك العتاب
I wish reproach would leave you be,
لا تقربن بما ينعى عليك غدا
Do not draw near what will be blamed upon you tomorrow,
مزايا النخل يوم الفخر مما
The virtues of the palm tree on the day of pride are such
برئت إلى الشوق المبرح من قلبي
My heart has been purified by ardent desire,
إذا نمت نم للأمن فوق مهاد
If you sleep, sleep safely upon your bed
أيا عمر العدل الذي مطل المدى
O Umar, embodiment of justice whose promise
صحت بالربع فلم يستجيبوا
I woke at dawn, but they did not respond
ومدرع ينساب في منبت الخوط
And an armored one flows in the planted lines
قلت للساخر الذي
I said to the mocker who
يا واحد الدهر في علم وفي عمل
O you who are unique in knowledge and deed
ياصاح لا تبك عهدا للوصال مضى
O companion, do not weep for the days of union that have passed
مولاي ها أنا في جوار أبيكا
My Master, here I am in the vicinity of your father
إذا ما غرست الخير في ابن جدار
If you plant goodness in the heart of a neighbor
خليلي إذ ما جئتما دار طارق
My beloved friends, when you come to Tariq's abode,
مولاي خمس تولت
My Master, five have passed
لو أنني فيك بذلت الدنا
If I spent my whole life for you
تعود الأماني بعد انصراف
Wishes return after their departure
تلوى ظلام الليل بالصبح ظالما
The darkness of night twisted with the dawn, unjust
هلم فجفن الدهر قد لاذ بالغمض
Come now as the eyelid of time has grown weary with blinking
هدم السد وهو ما هو فار
He destroyed the dam, though it was not damaged
قحطنا ثم صاب الغيث رحمى
We suffered drought, then the rain of mercy poured down
يا طلعة الشوم التي مهما بدت
O dawn of ill omens that no matter how it seems
من ذا يعد فضائل الفشتالي
Who can recount the virtues of Al-Fushtālī,
رعى الله راعي الشاء ما شاء إنه
The shepherd cared for his sheep as he wished
يا واحد العليا بلا إلباس
O Exalted One without garb,
أجلك عن عتب يغض من الود
I delay reproach that diminishes affection
يا واحد الدهر في خلق وفي خلق
O The One, eternal in creation and character
بك الخطط الرفيعة فلتهنا
With you the lofty plans, so let them be gentle,
دعوتك للود الذي جنباته
I called you to the affection which you avoided
شفاء عياض للنفوس شفاء
The healing of Iyaad is a healing for souls
عجب الأمير لجرأتي يوم الوغى
The prince wondered at my boldness on the day of battle
نهضوا وقد جن االدجى وتخالفت
They rose when night's darkness fell, and the paths
وقالوا حكى الزرزور لونا وخفة
They said the sparrow had color, lightness,
سألتك عبد الله إيضاح مشكل
I asked you, O servant of Allah, to explain a perplexity
لله درك من أخ
For God's sake, how precious you are, O brother
يمينا بنور الفجر يوما إذا بدا
With the light of dawn some day when it appears
هات الحديث عن الركب الذي بانا
Tell us about the caravan which set out
ألما على شط الفرات المقدس
When you are on the sacred Euphrates shore
والله ما البغلة عندي إذا
By God, the mule matters not to me
نفحت فشبت لافح التذكار
The breeze blew gently, igniting the embers of memory,
يا أديبا أزرى بكل أديب
O writer, most generous of all writers,
يمينا بيانع ورد الخدود
With a radiant, rosy cheek
لما دعا داعي الهوى لبيته
When the caller of passion called me, I responded,
أبا الفضل عاتب أباك الرضى
O Abul Fadl, reproach your father for his displeasure,
جزتني غرناطة بعد ما
Granada rewarded me after I
ما لقلبي إذا هفا البرق حنا
What is wrong with my heart when lightning flashes,
جلا الحق قلبي حتى أنارا
The truth illuminated my heart until it shone
يا من دعاني إلى رفد يجود به
O you who called me to aid, with which the wealthy are generous
يا طالبا من جاره إسكرفجا
O seeker from his neighbor a drink
يا من يفيد الطين كل صوره
O You who gives clay every shape of its form
لله درك يا ابن بطان فما
Glory be to you, O son of Batan, though
مولاي لازلت في أمان
My Master, you remain in my safekeeping
أمسعود بن يوسف طير قلبي
Amr ibn Yusuf is the bird of my heart
أبا العلاء تلقاك الزمان بما
O Abul Ala, time has welcomed you with
ودونك فاستغرب على الماء موقفي
Without you, be amazed at my stance on the water
أقمنا برهة ثم ارتحلنا
We stayed awhile, then moved on
يا حبيبا من لعيني أن تراه
O beloved, if only my eyes could see you
إذا لم أشاهد منك قبل منيتي
If I do not behold you before my demise
أرى سيف إبراهيم بيني وبينه
I see the sword of Abraham between me and it
لك الملك ملك الحسن فاقض بكل ما
You have the kingdom of beauty, so decree as you wish,
أأبصرت مني في المصانع قبة
Have you seen a dome built by me in the factories
صدع الظلام بها وحث كؤوسها
وسواس حليك أم هم الرقباء
يا محلا لخلتي وانتخائي
يا جملة الفضل والوفاء
أنور سناء لاح في مشرق الغرب
أشكو إلى الصيد من أبناء يعقوب
جهاد هوى لكن بغيري ثوابي
يا كتابي إذا بلغت محلا
إذا لم تهذبك الأبوة والحج
السعد هذا بابه المفتوح
لك عاذل بثقيله وخفيفه
أهاجتك ذكرى من خليط ومعهد
عند رأس المزاد عادني السهد
مكناسة جمعت بها زمر العدى
هاجتك إذ جئت اللوى فزرودا
دعا عزماتي والمطية والوخدا
أو لست من لاك الكلام وصاغه
لعمرك ما أغار على عدو
أنظر إليه والأصيل مؤرس
سكانها قد أسكنوا جنه
إذا قمت قلت عقيب الكرى
حمدت على فرط المشقة رحلة
مرضت فأيامي لذاك مريضة
إن كنت في العرس ذا قصور
إني وإن كنت ذا اعتلال
شريف ثقيل للوصي انتسابه
أيا ليل أفرطت في جفوتي
لا تعجبن لطالب نال العلا
قلدت من نصر الإلاه حساما
ضرط الفقيه فقلت ذاك غريبة
يا ليل طلت ولم تجد بتبسم
أموطني الذي أزعجت عنه
سلام الله بورك من سلام
ولما أن نأت منكم ديار
إن كانت الآداب أضحت جنة
وقالوا ظفرنا في الزمان بخاتم
خليفة الله في أرضه
سلمت لمصر في الهوى من بلد
فدى لعذار فوق خدك رائق
أنا نسخة الأكوان أدمج خطها
كأنما الغيث ملك
إن كانت الجنة موجودة
أنكرته لما أطل عارضه
رحلت فكنت في التحقيق بدرا
جاءت معذبتي في غيهب الغسق
سيدي أنت عمدتي فاحتملني
هي أسعد ما دونهن حجاب
إذا ذهبت يمينك لا تضيع
إذا فكرت في وطن كريم
لا عدل في الملك إلا وهو قد نصبه
رأيت بمخدومي انتفاخا فرابني
جوانحنا نحو اللقاء جوانح
وأبيض من ذوي الأشجار يبدو
بنفسي غزال في ثناياه بارق
ناديت دمعي إذ جد الرحيل بهم
يا غزالا ترك القلب المبلى
يا شمس فضل سناها ليس يحتجب
خذها مجاجة ماء زهر باسم
أملي من الدنيا تأتي خلوة
من كان في الحكم له نائب
عقبات منكب ناكبة
أتى ابن سليمان وفي الفكر فترة
دعاك بأقصى المغربين غريب
بني الدنيا بني لمع السراب
لما رأوا كلفي به ودروا
غبت فلا عين ولا مخبر
يا نجعة الوزراء والنواب
يا قلب كم هذا الجوى والخفوت
صاب مزن الدموع من جفن صبك
يا كوكب النحس من قرب على الحقب
الختم يحفظ مضنون الكتاب به
ما ريء مثلي في الماضي ولا الآتي
أنا كافر وسواي فيه بعاذل
لم أعد الحسام من أدواتي
قد زرت قبرك عن طوع بأغمات
بعدنا وإن جاورتنا البيوت
ألا أذن تصغي إلي سميعة
خذ من حياتك للممات الآتي
هلم فما بيني وبينك ثالث
رقمت أنامل صانعي ديباجي
باسماعيل ثم أخيه قيس
إذا سافر السلطان نحو منكب
خذها فقد وضح الصباح ولاحا
أمن جانب الغربي نفحة بارح
حييت يا مختط سبت ابن نوح
مر الذباب على فم ابن كماشة
قلت وللناقوس في مرتش
وقاني أذى الناس أخذ الدواء
لك الله من قلب على الحب ما صحا
فيا من يؤمل هذا الجنابا
لمن طلل نائي المزار بعيده
زمانك أفراح لدينا وأعياد
قلبي وسمعي في شغل عن الفند
أدرها فوجه الصبح قد كاد أن يبدو
ومنتقش المتن كالمبرد
عبس الليل فلا صبح يرى
أضاف الى الجفون السود شعرا
أرد ما كان وارض بما قضاه
قم سقني والأفق يقرع بابه
تعجلت وخط الشيب في زمن الصبا
رفلت بابراهيم في حلل السعد
نشدتك هل أبصرت قبلي أو بعدي
يا ذا الذؤابة إلا أنه سعد
كماشيكم من أجله انكمش السعد
لا ترج إلا الله في شدة
يا أبا الفضل إن تغب عن سوا
إرفع قسي المنشآت بسعده
أهلا بطيفك زائرا أو عائدا
جفاك الحيا من رقعة ظلت عندها
أغرى بي الشامت ألحاظه
مبارك ما قدمت سفيان رغبة
هنيئا بما خولت من رفعة القدر
عقب الشعير لقد هوت بك عيري
خليلي إن اشتقتني مرة
رأيت هدايا الأرض دونك قدرها
هنيئا لمن حث الركائب في بدر
محلك بالدنيا وبالدين معمور
خليفة الله ساعد القدر
لقد زار الجزيرة منك بحر
حقر لها ما في يديها بدأة
قعدت لتذكير ولو كنت منصفا
ولما حثثت السير والله حاكم
شاهد بكوكبنا المطل
يحق لي المجد المؤثل والفخر
لو كان لي في الهوى اختيار
فمن راحه اليسرى ومن عنده النصر
جاءتك تعرف بالشميم سراها
سلا هل لديها من مخبرة ذكر
يا حسنها من أربع وديار
يا مالكي بخلال
أيا ليلة بالخصب لم تأل شهرة
يا كوكب الحسن يا معناه يا قمره
بلد يحف به الرياض كأنه
تقول لي الأظعان والشوق في الحشا
أيا سبع الميدان دعوة آمل
أيا راكب البحر الأجاج مخاطرا
يا حسنه من ملزم آثاره
إذا أنت لاحظت السلاح وجدتني
قلت لما سألوني
أقلامك الصفر يا بني إن كتبت
جعسوس زين خطة الحكم التي
جعسوس يا شر طير
والكون أشراك نفوس الورى
أنت للمسلمين خير عماد
تخطت وفود الليل بان به الوخط
ألم تدر أن اللحى في الخدود
سهام المنايا لا تطيش ولا تخطى
عهدي بهاتيك الكريمة مهرق
هممت لأن أقبلها بشيبي
عرصات دارك للضياف مبارك
سرى والدجى قد آن منه رحيل
لقد رام كتم الوجد يوم ارتحاله
لم يبق لي جود الولاية حاجة
يا حفيد الولي ياوارث الفخر
الحب حركهم لكل جدال
يا أيها المحتسب الجزل
أفادت وجهتي بنداك مالا
ألا عم صباحا أيها الربع واسلم
أخذت وأمواج الردى متلاطمة
ألا هكذا تبنى المدارس للعلم
جعسوس ثعلب مكر
