العمر نوم والمنى أحلام

1. Life is but sleep, and death is a dream
What can continue to remain?

١. الْعًمْرُ نَوْمٌ وَالْمُنَى أَحْلاَمُ
مَاذَا عَسَى أَنْ يَسْتَمِرَّ مُقَامُ

2. When we become sure of something at first
It will end as minds require

٢. وَإِذَا تَحَقَّقْنَا لِشَيءٍ بَدْأَةً
فَلَهُ بِمَا تَقْضِي الْعُقُولُ تَمَامُ

3. And the soul ambitiously rushes
Galloping, though time refuses that

٣. وَالنَّفْسُ تَجْمَحُ فِي مَدَى آمَالِهَا
رَكْضَاً وَتَأْبَى ذَلِكَ الأيَّامُ

4. He whose loss does not pain his own soul
The laws have been carried out for his beloved

٤. مَنْ لَمْ يُصَبْ فِي نَفْسِهِ فَمُصَابُهُ
بِحَبِيبِهِ نَفَذَتْ بِذَا الأَحْكَامُ

5. After youth comes aging, and after it
Decrepitude, and after life a tomb

٥. بَعْدَ الشَّبِيبِةِ كَبْرَةٌ وَوَرَاءَها
هَرَمٌ وَمِنْ بَعْدِ الْحَيَاةِ حِمَامُ

6. By some wisdom, the gleams of darkness shone
And dawn and dusk alternated

٦. وَلِحِكْمَةٍ مَا أَشْرَقَتْ شُهْبُ الدُّجَى
وَتَعَاقَبَ الإِصْبَاحُ وَالإِظْلاَمُ

7. Your world, O you, is a stopping place for travelers
An abode of journey where there is no stay

٧. دُنْيَاكَ يَا هَذَا مَحلَّةُ نُقْلَةٍ
وَمُنَاخُ رَكْبٍ مَا لَدِيْهِ مَقَامُ

8. This is the Prince of the Believers, by whom
Leniency was found and executing abolished

٨. هَذَا أَمِيرُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ وَمَنْ بِهِ
وُجِدَ السَّمَاحُ وَأُعْدِمَ الإِعْدَامُ

9. The secret of trusteeship and caliphate is Yusuf
A rain for kings and their roaring lion

٩. سِرُّ الأَمَانَةِ وَالْخِلاَفَةِ يُوسُفٌ
غَيْثُ الْمُلُوكِ وَلَيْثُهَا الضِّرْغَامُ

10. The vicissitudes of time attacked him, so it transgressed
And glory is high and the Fifth is vanquished

١٠. قَصَدَتْهُ عَادِيَةُ الزَّمَانِ فَأَقْصَدَتْ
وَالْعِزُّ سَامٍ وَالْخَمِيسُ لُهَامُ

11. The world was anguished by him and its drink was bitter
And Iraq lamented its affliction and Syria

١١. فُجِعَتْ بِهِ الدُّنْيَا وَكُدِّرَ شِرْبُهَا
وَشَكَا الْعِرَاقُ مُصَابَهُ وَالشَّامُ

12. Alas! For the beautiful manners, as if
The full moon of darkness was eclipsed completely

١٢. أَسَفاً عَلَى الْخُلُقِ الْجَمِيلِ كَأَنَّمَا
بَدْرُ الدُّجُنَّةِ قَدْ جَلاَهُ تَمَامُ

13. Alas! For the young age, as if it is
The garden flower whose bloom is plucked

١٣. أسفاً عَلَى الْعُمُرِ الْجَدِيدِ كَأَنَّهُ
زَهْرُ الْحَدِيقَةِ زَهْرُهُ بَسَّامُ

14. Alas! For the pleasing disposition, as if it is
The flower of gardens smothered by clouds

١٤. أَسَفاً عَلَى الْخُلُقِ الرَّضِيّ كَأَنَّهُ
زَهْرُ الرِّيَاضِ هَمى عَلَيْهِ غَمَامُ

15. Alas for the face that however it appeared
Minds were bewildered by the light of its beauty

١٥. أَسَفاً عَلَى الْوَجْهِ الَّذِي مَهْما بَدَا
طَاشَتْ لِنُورِ جَمَالِهِ الأَفْهَامُ

16. O defender of the strange border and its people
While the earth trembles and the sky is dark

١٦. يَانَاصِرَ الثَّغْرِ الْغَرِيبِ وَأَهْلِهِ
وَالأَرْضُ تَرْجُفُ وَالسَّمَاءُ قَتَامُ

17. O owner of charity in the darkness of night
While people are sleeping in beds of bliss

١٧. يَاصَاحِبَ الصَّدَقَاتِ فِي جُنْحِ الدُّجَى
وَالنَّاسُ فِي فُرُشِ النَّعِيمِ نِيَامُ

18. O protector of the sanctuary, in whose shade
Widows were veiled and orphans clothed

١٨. يَاحَافِظَ الْحَرَمِ الَّذِي بِظِلاَلِهِ
سُتِرَ الأَرَامِلُ وَاكْتَسَى الأَيْتَامُ

19. My Master, do you have a visit to the palaces
After the house was emptied, or any knowledge?

١٩. مَوْلاَيَ هَلْ لَكَ للْقُصُورِ زِيَارَةٌ
بَعْدَ انْتِزَاحِ الدَّارِ أَوْ إِلْمَامُ

20. My Master, do you have any remembrance of servants?
You are far above forgetting promises

٢٠. مَوْلاَيَ هَلْ لَكَ للْعَبِيدِ تَذَكُّرٌ
حَاشَاكَ أَنْ يُنْسَى لَدَيْكَ ذِمَامُ

21. O Unique of the unique, and the banner
Whose glory the banners shook

٢١. يَا وَاحِدَ الآحَادِ وَالْعَلَمُ الَّذِي
خَفَقَتْ بِعِزَّةِ نَصْرِهِ الأَعْلاَمُ

22. The command of God befell you when
Asceticism, generosity, and courage were perfected in you

٢٢. وَافَاكَ أَمْرُ اللهِ حِينَ تَكَامَلَتْ
فِيكَ النُّهَى وَالْجُودُ وَالإِقْدَامُ

23. And you journeyed from us, the best successor
God and Islam praised you

٢٣. وَرَحَلْتَ عَنَّا الرَّكْبَ خَيْرَ خَلِيفَةٍ
أَثْنَى عَلَيْكَ اللهُ وَالإِسْلاَمُ

24. Good is the path you walked, whose companion was silence
And provision was night vigil and fasting

٢٤. نِعْمَ الطَّرِيقُ سَكْتَ كَانَ رَفِيقُهُ
وَالزَّادُ فِيهِ تَهَجُّدٌ وَصِيَامُ

25. You veiled, O sun of beauty, at dawn
So today is night and light is darkness

٢٥. وَكَسَفْتَ يَا شَمْسَ الْمَحَاسِنِ ضَحْوَةً
فَالْيَوْمُ لَيْلٌ وَالضِّياءُ ظَلاَمُ

26. And Eid al-Fitr quenched you with a cup of martyrdom
In which was perpetual inspiration from fate

٢٦. وَسَقَاكَ عِيدُ الْفِطْرِ كَأَسَ شَهَادَةٍ
فِيهَا مِنَ الأَجَلِ الْوُحِيِّ مُدَامُ

27. And you ended your life with prayers, so excellent
Is the noble deed whose effort is an end

٢٧. وَخَتَمْتَ عُمْرَكَ بِالصَّلاَةِ فَحَبَّذَا
عَمَلٌ كَرِيمٌ سَعْيُهُ وَخِتَامُ

28. My Master, how long will this slumber be
Between the planks and soil you sleep?

٢٨. مَوْلاَيَ كَمْ هَذَا الرُّقَادُ إِلَى مَتَى
بَيْنَ الصَّفَائِحِ وَالُّترَابِ تَنَامُ

29. Offer greetings and count it as devotion
If you can speak in the morning

٢٩. أَعِدِ التَّحِيَّةَ وَاحْتَسِبْهَا قُرْبَةً
إِنْ كَانَ يُمْكِنُكَ الْغَدَاةَ كَلاَمُ

30. Structures you erected weep for you
White like pigeons weeping

٣٠. تَبْكِي عَلَيْكَ مَصَانِعٌ شَيَّدْتَهَا
بِيضٌ كَمَا تَبْكِي الْهَدِيلَ حَمَامُ

31. Mosques you renovated weep for you
So people in them bow and stand

٣١. تَبْكِي عَلَيْكَ مَسَاجِدٌ عَمَّرْتَهَا
فَالنَّاسُ فِيهَا سُجَّدٌ وَقِيَامُ

32. Creatures you secured weep for you
With peace while they are like cattle

٣٢. تَبْكِي عَلَيْكَ خَلاَئِقٌ أَمَّنْتَهَا
بِالسِّلْمِ وَهْيَ كَأَنَّهَا أَنْعَامُ

33. You dealt with the sake of God in what you intended
So your goal was not far from you

٣٣. عَامَلْتَ وَجْهَ اللهِ فِيمَا رُمْتَهُ
مِنْهَا فَلَمْ يَبْعُدْ عَلَيْكَ مَرَامُ

34. Had you been ransomed or rescued from harm
Noble souls would have been sacrificed for you

٣٤. لَوْ كُنْتَ تُفْدَى أَوْ تُجَارُ مِنَ الرَّدَى
بُذِلَتْ نُفُوسٌ مِنْ لَدُنْكَ كِرَامُ

35. Had you been protected with swords and spears
Your army would not have been defeated

٣٥. لَوْ كُنْتَ تُمْنَعُ بِالصَّوارِمِ وَالْقَنَا
مَا كَانَ رَكْبُكَ بِالْغِلاَبِ يُرَامُ

36. But it is the command of God, and we have
Only consent to the decree and submission

٣٦. لَكِنَّهُ أَمْرُ الإِلَهِ وَمَا لَنَا
إِلاَّ رِضاً بِالْحُكْمِ وَاسْتِسْلاَمُ

37. And God has written extinction on creation
And His ordainment, pens have run dry

٣٧. وَاللهُ قَدْ كَتَبَ الْفَنَا عَلَى الْوَرَى
وَقَضَاؤُهُ جَفَّتْ بِهِ الأَقْلاَمُ

38. Sleep content near God for what
You forwarded on the day when feet stumble

٣٨. نَمْ فِي جِوَارِ اللهِ مَسْرُوراً بِمَا
قّدَّمْتَ يَوْمَ تُزَلْزَلُ الأَقْدَامُ

39. And know that the scion of your kingdom has become
In the seat of your height, and he is the Imam

٣٩. وَاعْلَمْ بِأَنَّ سَلِيلَ مُلْكِكَ قَدْ غَدَا
فِي مُسْتَقَرِّ عُلاَكَ وَهْوَ إِمَامُ

40. A protection enveloping those you left behind
A shady shadow, so he does not oppress

٤٠. سِتْرٌ تَكَنَّفَ مِنْهُ مَنْ خَلَّفْتَهُ
ظِلُّ ظَلِيلٌ فَهْوَ لَيْسَ يُضَامُ

41. You were the sword, so you became in the scabbard of soil
And for the victory of your kingdom, swords are drawn from it

٤١. كُنْتَ الْحُسَامَ فَصِرْتَ فِي غِمْدِ الثَّرَى
وَلِنَصْرِ مُلْكِكَ سُلَّ مِنْهُ حُسَامُ

42. You left the nation of Ahmad for Muhammad
So by the nation's prosperity, matters were decided

٤٢. خَلَّفْتَ أُمَّةَ أَحْمَدٍ لِمُحَمَدٍ
فَقَضَتْ بِسَعْدِ الأُمَّةِ الأَحْكَامُ

43. For he is the Caliph of the world in his era
Covenants are kept and kinships connected

٤٣. فَهُوَ الْخَلِيفَةُ لِلْوَرَى فِي عَهْدِهِ
تُرْعَى الْعُهُودُ وَتُوصَلُ الأرْحَامُ

44. All your conventions are preserved
No system of yours was scattered about you

٤٤. أَبْقَى رُسُومَكَ كَلَّهَا مَحْفُوظَةً
لَمْ يَنْتَثِرْ مِنْهَا عَلَيْكَ نِظَامُ

45. Justice, noble traits, piety
The house, titles and servants

٤٥. الْعَدْلُ وَالشِّيَمُ الْكَرِيمَةُ وَالتُّقَى
وَالدَّارُ وَالأَلْقَابُ وَالْخُدَّامُ

46. It suffices me to cover your tomb kissing
And say, with tears flowing,

٤٦. حَسْبِي بِأَنْ أَغْشَى ضَرِيحَكَ لاَثِماً
وَأَقُولُ وَالدَّمْعُ السَّفُوحُ سِجَامُ

47. O burial ground of piety, O abode of guidance
Greetings and peace be upon you from me

٤٧. يَا مَدْفَنَ التَّقْوَى وَيَا مَثْوَى الْهُدَى
مِنِّي عَلَيْكَ تَحِيَّةٌ وَسَلاَمُ

48. I have hidden from my grief for you, and in solitude
A fire, blazing between ribs

٤٨. أَخْفَيْتُ مِنْ حُزْنِي عَلَيْكَ وَفِي الْحَشَا
نَارٌ لَهَا بَيْنَ الضُّلُوعِ ضِرَامُ

49. Had I fulfilled your due, there would have been
No stay for me in existence after you

٤٩. وَلَو أَنَّنِي أَدَيْتُ حَقَّكَ لَمْ يَكُنْ
لِي بَعْدَ فَقْدِكَ فِي الْوُجُودِ مُقَامُ

50. When a young man does what he can
And makes effort, no blame is upon him

٥٠. وَإِذَا الْفَتَى أَدَّى الَّذِي فِي وِسْعِهِ
وَأَتَى بِجُهْدٍ مَا عَلَيْهِ مَلاَمُ
