1. After you all, my heart has no desire
To see a bird fly without wings.

2. And for longing to kindle when
The morning breeze blows with your breaths.

3. The neighbor of life and tales are sorrows,
And the nights pass after glory.

4. Do you see slumber tempting my heart
After you, not even at dawn's first light?

5. If my advice on days were sought,
It would not exist after you were gone.

6. The nights' turns hemmed me in with you
And spun around me in winding shrouds.

7. It made me drink from parting's cup
Continuously in eager sips at dawn.

8. From my resolve and youthful zeal
It ransacked what I never breached before.

9. It shattered my power's ascent and tore down
My prepared will on the day of struggle.

10. It left me with no arms but an
Ignoble old age, weaker than arms.

11. It hastened me with this, and in that time
My passion for love and comfort increased.

12. So it's as if my youth were a specter
Or a flash that faded after lightning.

13. A night of intimacy darkened, and a short night
Drew its chill away at dawn's right hand.

14. Passion is a drink, and ecstasy a draught,
And the two are varieties of joyous intoxication.

15. Oh, do imprisoned souls have any
Escape from their fetters' grip?

16. Can roses bloom again after withering?
Or can a reunion happen after parting?

17. And if bodies cannot reunite,
The communion of spirits takes their place.

18. The pact of love flowed from lofty clouds,
A flash heralding the lightning's gleam.

19. Whenever spring wept green,
Laughter shone above it from meadows' smiles.

20. Memories of that time brought back a feast for me,
One that was a celebration for the eyes.

21. At it blood flowed for tears
And down cheeks it flowed unrestrained.

22. Horses sped off, and the night grew weary
Of darkness spreading over all regions.

23. It was as if the gloom were an army of blacks,
And the stars of night were spearheads.

24. Their backs bore steeds
With ample resolve, purpose, and zeal.

25. They concealed passion, though it burned,
And the cloak would have worked had winds not blown.

26. They left me afterward bent over,
Heavy of step, wings folded.

27. And my cheeks wasted away like a spurned lover's
Once your arrows of separation struck them.

28. They folded to the bending of fierce longing and passion
To the ground's dust their proud necks.

29. Mustafa, the universe's chosen one
From the prophets, the guides of peoples to success.

30. God's proof, God's wisdom, God's light
In each and every matter's beginning and end.

31. The gatherer of creations, the seal of messengers,
Affirmed by God after them, the destroyer.

32. The doer of miracles, the mind cannot
Fathom their clear signs of proof.

33. From inanimate objects that speak and the moon splitting
And water springing from the rock.

34. The prophets' hoped-for, the cosmos' expected one,
His claim as giver of good news to open.

35. The manifestation of revelation, the rise of truth, the meaning
Of creation, the All-Prevailing Opener's opening.

36. What rain of God's mercy lofty?
What lamp by His guidance illuminating?

37. What opened Amr's chest for the Messenger
Whose heart God hastened to expand?

38. The Spirit split him then purified
His heart afterward with cool salve.

39. The verses extolled you, O seal of messengers,
So for me after them, who is there to praise?

40. And for the souls' failure to grasp the truth
And their pause at it in exposure.

41. God exemplified His light in the niche
And the lamp allegories.

42. So remove my shame by veiling
And conceal by it my disgrace's scandal.

43. God's blessings upon you, O essence of the cosmos,
For your magnificent radiant virtues.

44. As many as the drops of rain, grains of sand,
And all the rivers morning takes to pasture.

45. And may God reward you best
Of what He rewards the noble reformers.

46. Alas! How I see myself pursued by sins
And some remain with me, with no escape.

47. Misfortunes besieged me like enemies swarming
And sorrows pierced me like kindled flames.

48. Judgment came fast and took hold—can
A decree inscribed on the tablets be erased?

49. I inclined to the world distracted, not for religion or righteousness,
Severing in delusion my life's thread.

50. My bargain failed and my luck deserted me
When gray hairs fancied the sweetened reins,

51. But my stubborn soul refused
And persisted in passion and aspiration.

52. O healer of sins, your care is what saves me
In my illness, assuring success.

53. O curer of blindness and sufficer from harm,
And healer of the sick and dresser of wounds.

54. The door of acceptance has closed before me, and
O my savior, none but you have the key.

55. God singled you out in perfection, and the necklace of the universe
Was not joined without the clasp of your grasp.

56. Before existence came into being and
The darkness of specters shone with light.

57. And from the light of your birth the earth glowed
And shook with delight at it.

58. So fertility ran in the lean stalks,
And milk flowed in the dry teats.

59. By it, many rights were guarded
That enemies usurped with abandon.

60. With Muhammad ibn Abdallah's glories, lion of foes and rain of tolerance,
The defender of truth, sender of pouring clouds between al-Sana'a and al-Sifah's white plain.

61. Frightener of enemies' steeds in their land
As they strutted pridefully.

62. Playing with shadows like Arab vagabonds
Fed in the meadows the pollen of flowers.

63. O lantern of the assembly and ruin of foes,
Pillar of noble kingdom and widespread wings.

64. May God gather for extolling you
The sweetness of Abbasids in the path of praise.

65. With prudent perspective, determined resolve,
Reliant and fiercely vanquishing.

66. You lowered your wing to the ground until
No wing above it remained aloft.

67. You are its lamp and the light of its gloom
May God defend you from the lamp's breeze.

68. God assayed you, O ruby of the kingdom,
Source of justice and reform.

69. With woes the tales of Solomon surpassed
And unprecedented tribulations came.

70. At the hands of a crazed pilgrim, my brother of audacity and impetuousness
Who gained from it what Musaylimah the liar did when he opposed guidance and was recalcitrant.

71. Then he restored affairs beautifully
To you after separation and withdrawal.

72. So allow goodness to flow in the land and treat
It as treasure of riches and dwelling of good winds.

73. And gain glory through gifts and conclude
Their pact where profits are expected.

74. The sky's blessings vie to reach
The land when seeds of tolerance are entrusted in it.

75. And enjoy through it the halo of a blessed
Reign that came to hopes in line with their proposal.

76. And delight in majesty like that
Of a full moon that appeared from you.

77. The place of counsel, the gathering point, abode
Of every nobleman, sheikh, and old lion.

78. And the abode of peace during days of peace,
As the lion disappears on the day of strife.

79. A meeting of wisdom, a playfulness of inspiration,
And source of joy and celebrations.

80. Where is Chosroes' palace or the hall of his palace?
Grandeur is not measured with pebbles.

81. Where is God's light next to the fire's source
When you consider it, O perceptive one?

82. An edifice whose pride for you
Was a matter of honor like a garden's bloom in periods.

83. When times improved and the season turned fair,
It was inaugurated and hastened to open.

84. And clad in eloquent speech's adornment.
When youth departed and thought returned,

85. And tired steps slowed in old age.
The effort of a heart whose essence

86. I gathered after struggle as a drop from its unlocked essence.
And the meanings of rhetoric are chaste maidens

87. Who do not speak with old men of marriage.
What else remains for an old man but return to God

88. And whispers of the pious and the righteous?
And frequenting the door that mended the broken one

89. And imploring in request and insistence.
And so it is sorceress of cheeks

90. Who captivates with every amorous dimple.
It breathes magic into eyelids and twists

91. The cords of beauty toward smiling faces.
May you remain in honor and esteem

92. Between success and comfort.
Misfortunes' tails did not target a foe

93. Nor trail behind them morning meteors.
You were empowered and the decree fulfilled—can

94. A written judgment in the tablets be erased?
I did not care for the world which I strayed in,

95. Not for religion or righteousness.
Severing in delusion my lifetime

96. My deal failed and luck deserted me.
Old age aspired to the sweetened reins
