For it held precedence in life's battle

17. I substituted the company of patience for the desolation of ardency
And entrusted God to arrange my affair

18. Whether in poverty, though I attained the abode of wealth
Or in fear, though I became a neighbor of the clan of Victory

19. I alighted at the House of God, so my mounts knelt down
And I was greeted with ease, benevolence and righteousness

20. I attained with them relief from the calamities of fate
As frightened birds attain their nest

21. So it cast the wing of security over my fears
While terror fled from it in extreme fright

22. And I no longer fear time and what lies beyond it
The battalions of a generous folk and ample numbers

23. Remaining such that I view events from where they cannot be viewed
So who will relay my abode to the fair meadows' caretaker

24. With the most magnanimous when steeds recoil
The most forbearing when he shows restraint

25. And the most generous when he hosts
If evil befalls or life is miserly

26. He is rain for one seeking rain and help for one compelled
Beneath you, O House of the Eminent, are my frolics

27. And brocades of poetic praise
O full moon of Sublime lineage, display yourself

28. Be white if you wish, or be yellow
O adornments of the Yemeni plateau, shine

29. The stars of nightfall or the beauties of days of blossoms
O you who pierces the thick-haired doe, seeking

30. The rising of the Pleiades at dawn
Convey my regards to the beloved ones that I

31. Have arrived in an impregnable abode
And that since I directed myself to the court of Yusuf

32. The status of people has diminished in my eyes
To the point that I came to a land with earth is musk

33. And was covered in its finest pearls
Thereby quenching a long burning thirst

34. And bursting into its horizons with fragrant gum
And I greeted the sun of the kingdom at the rise of guidance

35. And kissed the palm of the valiant lion in the heart of the sea
And I placed my hopes in the King of all people

36. So I attained profitable returns after loss
And I called out hopes from the summit of highness

37. "Come to the blossoms of munificence and good tidings!"
The Prince of the tall and complete lances and clipped spears

38. And preserver of the religion of God from the attacking borders
A war fire they did not ignite has died out

39. And the dwellings of a people have been emptied without your raids
And detached groups who opposed you, they

40. Confront a sword in the hand of the Eternal Conqueror
You left their courtyards as dust with rivers of swords flowing

41. So by God how you have strengthened the upright religion
And by God how you have abased the religion of unbelief

42. And by God there is an Eid whose felicity
Greeted you with imminent conquest and victory

43. And by God, from a fast whose rights you fulfilled
Provisioning it with the clear recitation

44. You completed its full night by day
Communing by night of Power to the Spirit

45. Until it is fulfilled from you without boredom
So blessed is the one of pure, rewarded fast

46. And blessed is the consequent breakfast
My Master, if daylight were my parchment

47. And the darkness of night—save it—were my ink
If the edges of my limbs were pens

48. I would fall short in praising you and giving thanks
You restored to us from the precedent of your ancestors

49. Covenants, so excellent is reunion after separation
And you renewed for us a blessing which we have long

50. Become accustomed to, thereby attaining the prime of time
My bosom friend, poetry is sorcery, and I

51. When I wish, turn it into confounding magic
And pearls are none other than what I present as speech

52. So my shore are my strings and my oyster my ideas
I made my praise of you the most dignified jewelry

53. Which I pride myself before all peoples in the assembly of glory
And I prepared my love for you as a means
