ومستطيل من بني الكتاب
A pretentious writer whose ways are corrupt,
يا مظهرا لي هيبة بحجابه
Oh you who instill awe in me with your veil,
ما يقرب المرء من قرن يلذ به
What brings a person close to a companion he takes pleasure in
لا تذخر المال دون الحمد معتقدا
Do not hoard wealth without giving praise,
فتى نظمت عقدا عليه مناقبه
A youth with virtues strung as pearls about his neck,
وفتية كأنهم كواكب
Youth like stars, from a family of virtues,
الزهر ينشر ما طوى
The flowers unfold what they enfolded
حمام بوران يا لصحبي
A gusty dove, my companion
اخلع على العين حلة الطرب
Remove the veil of joy from the eye
أيها المستثير عتبي بعذر
O you who provoke my blame with an excuse
قد لاح في فودك المشيب
The grey has dawned upon your cheeks,
أيا من لساني لا يقوم بشكره
Oh one whom my tongue cannot adequately thank
لنا صديق عنده قينة
We have a friend who has a singing girl
لنا صديق صادق الوعد
We have a friend, true to his word,
وأهيف ان تثنى
And how graceful his every slight bend,
بحرمة حفظي للوداد بخلتي
By my devotion I've preserved our love, and my frugality,
قم نصطبح بأباريق وطاسات
Let us wake early with jugs and cups
يا من أودع منه
O you whom I bid farewell
أحسن بخد تروق رقته
A cheek that shines with softness
يا ناهرين مساكين المحبينا
O you who deny the suffering lovers,
يا بدر تم محياه تحيته
O full moon whose greeting is perfect,
غياث بن جارود في نفسه
Ghiyath ibn Jarud in himself
كن عبد خلك قبل أن
Before His deceptive bonds ensnare you
أعتق من الهم رق قلبي
Free my heart from the shackles of sorrow
نفسي الفداء لمن في طرفه دعج
My soul I'd sacrifice for one whose gaze
يا خائض البحر الذي قد طمت
O you who is sailing the sea, which is filled
صاح عبد الكريم بحر فرده
The servant Abd al-Karim cried out like a boundless sea
إنا لقوم إذا دعا بهم
We are a people, when called upon
وأديب له فم كل يوم
A scholar who each day opens his mouth,
مطايا السحب في آل الصباح
The clouds' steeds at dawn break
وصاحب لي ما تحصى فضائله
A friend whose virtues I can't count,
ومسمع تحلو اجتماعاتنا
With eager ears our meetings are so sweet,
يا سهل سهلت عيشي
O plain, you made my life easy
وخمار دخلت عليه ليلا
I entered upon a wine-seller at night,
وراح تريح الروح من تعب الهم
A breeze that relieves the soul of the burden of worries
وشيخ يحوم على نسل حام
An old man hovering over the progeny of Ham
لا تطرح عاريا تشاهده
Do not denounce one you see in disgrace
من عندنا تؤتى الحكم
From us is brought wisdom
أذاع أناس أن عيسى بن مرقس
Some people spread the news that Isa ibn Murqus
ألا عاطني المدامه
Give me wine in a cup
أعدم فؤادك همه بمدامة
Slay your heart's grief with a goblet
لنا روض يقصر عنه شرحي
We have a garden beyond my power to describe,
رأيت برأس الجسر شخصا لسانه
I saw at the head of the bridge a man whose tongue
وشادن طاف بمشمولة
A full moon rose carrying the sun of daybreak
يا من له سيف لحظ
O you who wields the sword of a glance,
ركائب آلائه تسرح
His bounteous ships do freely sail,
باكر عقارا كدم الذبيح
Early morning's incense is like the blood of sacrifice
قامت قيامة روحها لرواحي
Her soul arose for my soul
يا رب ظمآن الوشاح
O Lord of the thirsty pilgrim's garb
قد حبا طفل الصباح
The child of dawn has scattered
يا من يطوف بكعبة
O you who circumambulates the Kaaba of kindness
إذا شيد الإنسان أبنية التقى
When a man builds fortresses of piety,
قد أفلح العبد الذي ماله
The servant has succeeded who turned away
أيا من نون حاجبه سقام
O you whose frown is illness,
يا نجم أبراج الربى
O star, ornament of the homes
وصفراء ترقص إن قادها
Yellow she dances if mirage
قم نصطبح قهوة روائحها
Let us get up and have coffee, its fragrance
لنا نديم لمثلنا صلحا
We have a companion suitable for our likes,
ومشمش نثرته
And apricots its winds have strewn
أحمد لا تكس ابا أحمد
Ah, how you yearn, Ahmad, mourning days gone by
قد نال خيرون خيرا ليس يكفره
The virtuous have gained virtues that cannot be repaid,
إذا جاز تهديد عيسى بنا
If Jesus dared to threaten us,
يا من هو الأم لنا و الأب
O You who are mother and father to us
جواب عيسى لسائليه
Jesus' response to his questioners
خيرون مثل أبيه
The best are like their father
وقع الحريق بموضع لم أسمه
A fire broke out in a place I shall not name
دع المعاصي عنك في معزل
Forsake transgressions in seclusion
يقولون ما الدنيا فقلت شبيبة
They ask what is life, and I replied:
راقبتني العيون فيك فأشفق
The eyes watched me in you, so I pitied,
يا أبا إسحاق أخلا
O Abu Ishaq, my dear friend
بنفسي أخ لي منيع الحمى
My soul, a brother to me, fortified from fever,
كيف السبيل إلى التي هي جنة
How to reach she who is a paradise
وقهوة عنقت فنالت
Coffee embraced in a jug
وإني في الجياد لمن تراه
And I in the running horses, for one you see,
ولما أصبح الوصل
When unison came, with no disease,
يا أيها العبد الذي كل ما
O you servant who all that you do
أمر النصارى عجيب
The matter of Christians is strange
وقهوة تلمع كالسراب
Coffee glitters like a mirage,
ومعشوق الشمائل ذي دلال
The beloved of graceful features, so alluring,
راح تريح من الأوصاب والكرب
The cup, bringing solace from worries and sorrows,
راح إذا جليت في الليل معتكرا
When the night is unveiled in darkness
قم هاتها وردية ذهبية
Rise, bring me a golden, rosy wine
الروض في فرحة وفي طرب
The meadow is joyful and elated
خليلي هل من مسعد لي على كربي
My friend, is there anyone who can ease my troubles?
قل من يوجد في الأقوام
Few are found in times
يا من قليب إخائه
O you whose heart is pure of any turbidity,
وقائلة أراك لغير كسب
A woman said, I see you without purpose
لا تلحظن من أنت مستهتر
Do not scorn the one you take too lightly
أمهات الثمار بين الروابي
Mothers of fruits amidst the meadows stray
بلوت بني الدنيا فلم أرفيهم
I tested the people of this world, but found in them
قل للأمير كسوتني
Tell the prince you clothed me
جنى فعاتبت فما تابا
I reproached my beloved, but she did not repent
كراسيك ضرب والبساط تراب
Your couches are beaten and the carpet is dust
عرائس القضب تجلى
The dolls reveal themselves
ينادي من الساري إلي ومزعجي
The one who calls me from the yard disturbs me
لقد جار ما تشكوه في الحكم واعتدا
What you complain of has gone too far in rule and tyranny
وشارب مثل نصف الصاد صاد به
With lips like the curve of a sad letter
شكوت إليها يوم ودعها وجدي
I complained to her the day I said farewell and departed
ظبي رقيق حواشي نعمة الجسد
A delicate gazelle, ornament of the body's grace,
لنا أسمار نعقدها علينا
We have steeds that we lead by the bridle
يا عبد يا زين العباد
O beloved servant, O beauty of worshipers
أجياد قضب في قلائد لؤلؤ
Branches of oleander in necklaces of pearls,
قد مكن المطل من الوعد
He has enabled procrastination in promising,
عبر الغداة علي ظبي أغيد
In the early dawn a gazelle passed by me,
إن شئت أن تخبر ما عندي
If you wish to know what I have
أمن بعد سلم الوصل يا من أحبه
After peace has been made, O you whom I love
سلوت عن هاجري وعندي
I asked about my love though it caused me pain
يا أيها البدر الذي
O moon, your orbit adorned
يا رب تاج صاغه خاطري
O Lord, a crown my mind has wrought
برك ممنطقة الخصور
Blessed meadow of slender waists
ألا هاتها راحا لها ريح عنبر
Behold her coming, with a fragrance like ambergris
مر بنا يبسم عن جوهر
He passed by, smiling with the essence of beauty,
سرادق الغيم ممدود يشف لنا
The canopy of clouds is outstretched sheltering us
أخ لي أمسى في عطاياه أخطر
A brother of mine has become most generous with his gifts
يا غرة في جبهة الدهر
O you with radiant forehead in the realm of time
طال ليلي حتى لقد خال طرفي
The night hath been so long that mine eyes at length
وظبي من شرى منه وصالا
He who bought loyalty from him with the price of his submission, secured himself from loss
لقد كنت يا منصور تجهد في نصري
You, Mansur, strove to help me,
لئن غرني مما تسربلت رنق
If your finery has deceived me,
وليلة لم تك في سري
A night that was not in my secret
الجو يلمع برقه
The sky flickers its lightning
أخ لي ما لي من يديه فرار
A brother of mine, I can't escape his hands,
وشاعر من بني النجار
A poet from the lineage of woodworkers
لم يصف عيسى بن مرقس لأخ
Jesus, son of Marqas, described no brother
وقهوة كخلوق
And coffee like a spirit
إذا تثاقل عتب
When blame weighs heavy,
يأيها الأعمى الذي لا يبصر
O blind man who cannot see
قوم إذا التثموا رأيت أهلة
A people, when they gather together, I see a new moon
إنعم بنيروزك يا من إذا
Bless me with your New Year, O you when alive
أبو إسحاق شاعرنا إذا ما
When Abu Ishaq our poet sees a date,
دع ماء وجهك فيه لا ترقه فما
Let not your tears flow, do not cry
وساقية قد زها ريقها
A cup whose moisture glistens
وبربطاني غدا
With an Englishman overwhelming
كتبت إلى بعض الأخلاء رقعة
I wrote a note to some dear friends
كدر الزمان فليس فيه صفا
The times are troubled, lacking clarity,
أيا من لا أمل له ارتشافا
O you who have no hope of sipping
ومسمع فيه سفه
With hearing filled with foolishness
وزامر أبخر سخيف
With foolish pipes and cloying incense rife
لا والذي يزهى به من طرفه
By Him who adorns Himself with glances from His eyes,
إذا الجهول تجرا
When ignorance becomes bold
أرى ابن فطوسة يغتاب شعري
I see the son of Fatousah backbiting my poetry,
لنا من بنات الماء بيض ألذ من
We have eggs from the daughters of water that are more delicious than
وستر لصاحبه نيقة
A veil for its owner of fine make
أبالغ في مناصحة الصديق
I advise my friend sincerely
بنفسي أخ لي خلقه مثل خلقه
My own soul is a brother to me, his nature is like my nature
وحديقة من مقلة
A garden of yearning
لا تقرضن يا فار لي ذمة
O mouse, do not lend me an obligation,
ما لغياث من غياث إذا
What good is salvation when it comes
قد كان جسمي غير منهوك
My body was not worn down
الغيم بين مزرر ومحلل
The clouds amid embroidered and fragmented,
يا طاعني بعتاب كاد ينفذني
O you who reproach me with censure that nearly undid me,
إذا كنت ذا جاه فلا تستطل به
If you have prestige, do not lord it over anyone
هز الحبيب مجرد المطل
The beloved brandished his bare sword
خيرون لا يعرف غير المطال
He only knows blame, never understanding
أتاك نواله قبل السؤال
His gifts came before asking
يا آمري بالذل للمرتمي
O you who order me to bow in humiliation
إن النبيذ نبيل في خصائله
Wine is truly noble in its qualities
وشيخ رأيت له لحية
An old man I saw with a beard
أيا من ما له في الجود ثان
O you who has no equal in generosity,
تبسم عن مثل صافي الجمان
He smiled with the radiance of a crystal cup,
كم نعرة طولتها
How many a cry have I prolonged
عندي سماوات من الصواني
I have heavens made of trays
ولائم مر بمن لامني
One who blamed me passed by one I love,
سكنت بعدك ربع الهم يا سكني
After you left, a quarter of worry settled in me, O my tranquility,
أدل بالدل منه
He has charmed with his charm
حمام من لست له ذاكرا
Dove, you whom I do not remember,
حتام ذا الطغيان
O tyrant, end your tyranny
محسن بن الملح من جهله
The improver, son of salt, in his ignorance
قد كنت عذب الحياة حتى
I used to have a sweet life until
قد نظم الماء لؤلؤ الحبب
The water has strung pearls of love
بكت أسفا وقد زموا المطايا
She wept in sorrow as they saddled the mounts,
نحن بنو المعجزات والحكم
We are the people of miracles and wisdom
أنا في الغدو وفي الرواح
In early morn and evening lull,
تمصبطرمت في عتبي عليه
I pretended to be angry with him
غياث قد زاد تمصبطرمه
His arrogance has grown, and he no longer honors those who honor him.
باكر صبوحك باصطباحك
Brighten your morning with your greeting
نور الصباح مسبل الأطناب
The morning light drapes the meadows
روى لي أخبار الفتى المتشاعر
A friend of noble traits and purest heart
الماء بين مجوشن ومدرع
The water flows between surging and armored
يا لساق مهفهف
O breezy swaying legs
وظبي من الإنس أنفاسه
A gazelle whose breath is from humankind
من أين يستنفع الفتى بفتى
From whence does a young man benefit from a comrade
رأيتك بصاص الثياب مزوقا
I saw you with tattered clothes,
كأنما الجوزاء لما بدت
As though the Pleiades when they appeared
تاهت على القاصرات القيصريات
The purple robes graced the Caesarean girls
إذا ما قصدنا جعفرا كان جعفر
Whenever we visit Ja'far, Ja'far is
الشيب من بعد الصبا
Old age after youth
اطو الضمير على خير لذاك وذا
Fold the conscience toward the good of that one and this one,
إذا ما تأملت حال امرئ
Whenever you look upon the state of a man
يا ذا الذي لم يدع لي
O you who left me no side for reproach,
يا ذا الذي حمله جهله
O you who ignorance has burdened
الأرض أم بناتها الشجر
The earth is the mother of her daughters, the trees,
ونهر من الأنهار ألقت يد الصبا
The morning breeze flung upon a river
أمحسن بن الملح لا تك تائها
O Amr son of salt, do not be arrogant,
ترى جيده بين الغلالة والعقد
You see his cheek amidst the soft down and pearl beads
إذا ما كان في بيتي رغيف
If there is bread in my house
تاه على الولدان والحور
Wandering among the lads and fair maidens
وعاتق هندية سربلت
With an Indian neck gracefully clad
وقوم إن دجا للنقع ليل
A people, if night covers for slumber,
وستر له منظر مونق
A screen with a graceful view
ومله لهونا به عندما
A plaything we have made of him when
نحن الذين غدت رحى أحسابهم
We are the ones whose accounts have become
أيا سحابا وبله هام
O clouds, gather and pour down rain,
قل لبني الملح ما محسنكم
Tell the salty ones, what will improve you?
أغوص على الدر الذي لو طلبته
I plunge for pearls that, should I seek them,
زارني من خلعت فيه عذاري
The one for whom I had shed my modesty visited me
يا من له المنن النواضر
O You who has abundant graces
ألا رب فتيان كأن وجوههم
Behold, many young men whose faces
صد بعد الوصال تيها وعجبا
After union's delight, lost and confused was I,
أيا من غدا يعنى بحال خضابه
O you whose concerned with the dye of his beard
ألا يا شرابي يا منيتي
Oh my drink, oh my ecstasy
الروض في الياقوت والدر
The garden is of ruby and pearl
غدا من الدير إلى الدار
He came from the monastery to the house
من الذكر ما لا فخر في لبس مثله
Among memories, some lack pride in their attire
لنا مغن حسن العشره
We have a singer, good company,
يا هلالا فوق غصن
O crescent moon above a branch
الشهد صاب عند مطعم خلقه
Honey is sharp at the taste of its nature
وذي سواد ليس بالجليب
With a darkness not of plain garb
يا سائلي ما الرأي إسمع وصفه
O questioner, listen as I describe my view,
إذا الخل خلى عن طريق وصاله
When my beloved turned away from the path of union
تزوج الحسنات
Marry the virtues
نحن في روض نضير
We are in a blooming garden
لا أنس أيامي ولا أطرابي
I do not forget my days, nor my pleasures,
يا أيها الرشا الريب الذي
O you uncertainty and doubt
بتناثر المنثور في أغصانه
With its scattered prose in its branches
وظالمة الأرداف مظلومة الخصر
Of ample hips, slender waist
سقاني شبيهة أخلاقه
His morals have made me resemble him,
اشرب على النرجس ما دام قد
Drink from the narcissus as long as dawn
كم بحر حرب نقعه آذيه
How many wars have we waged, their harms afflicting us,
كفى الأصدقاء طلاب الأعادي
Enough of seeking out enemies -
وصاحب داخلته نخوة فغدا
A friend within whom uncouthness crept, to mine eye
قل لمن فيه اطراح
Say to whoever despairs in it
وطلق الوجه وضاح الجبين
With a bright open face and clear brow,
أنا عبد لأزرق هو عندي
I am a servant of the Blue One, he is with me
ولما تبدى الصبح في أثر الفجر
When dawn appeared in the wake of daybreak,
يا من يروح ويغتدي
O you who comes and goes
الراح قد صاغ المزا
The breeze fashioned the glass,
وصاحب صبحني
A friend wished me good morning,
أسير القطر قد أضحى طليقا
The rain's captive has now become free,
يأيها الرشأ الذي
O gentle plant whose tender edges quiver,
يا من يجور علي فيما يحكم
O you who wrong me in what you judge
طلق الغرة التي أنت فيها
Cast off the ignorance in which you live
وأخ ليس شأنه شكر نعمى
A brother who is ungrateful for blessings,
أصبح لا يخشى من الذم
He has become unafraid of blame
لبس الربيع على الجزيرة عشبه
Spring donned its grass garment on the island
أيا من له وجه قد اجتمعت به
Oh you whose face combines
إني لأحفظ ود من صافيته
I remember fondly those whose friendship I hold dear,
باعدت بالبعاد بيني وبينى
She traveled far, far away from me
أيها الأبلج الذي
O noble one whose generosity's
يا من تغيب عنا
O you who have been absent from us
أبا قاسم إن أنت عاودت بعدها
O Abu Qasim, if after this
بكت لبيني بكاء مكتئب
My tender one wept a weeping of melancholy
وشادن من بني الكتاب قلت له
I said to one of the sons of the scribes,
لنا بغير نفاجه
We have, without sudden fright,
يا أيها الغيث الذي
O rain that comes pouring down
إذا كان محتاجا إلى ماء وجهه
If your brother is in need of water for his face
يا من له بحر من البر
O One who has an ocean of kindness
جلا علينا عرائس الشيم
The maidens have come to us, adorned with necklaces of generosity
ومسمع مستبشع المنظر
With ears deafened and face contorted
لا ترد البخل ما حييت فما
Do not deny generosity as long as you live, for
وراح في لطافتها كحسي
The breeze whispers gently like my beloved
ما استطعم القصد مثل بشري
No purpose ever sought the like of my humanity,
يا رسولي خل عنك الظرف
O my messenger, leave aside doubt
أسير لزام من غريم غرامه
Captive of a binding from an estranged beloved
بركات عندي كاسمه بركات
Blessings are with me like his name, blessings,
من باع هما بلذة ربحا
Whoever sells worry for pleasure profits
رثت حواشي يوسف بعدما
The women of Joseph mourned after
يوم الفراق لقد أمت فريقا
The day we parted, it rendered groups asunder,
أيا ذا الحزم والعزم المكين
O you of firm resolve and strong determination,
لا تسمع الأقباط قافية
Do not let the Copts hear rhyme
غناء شحارير وزمر بلابل
The singing of nightingales and the chorus of bulbuls,
نسيم كحلقى في نغمته
A breeze like the melody in its tenderness
جدت والعيش ما حل
You were generous when life was enjoyable,
يا من به عاش ميت ذكرى
O you through whom the dead lived in memory
اخ لي بعيد مرامي الهمم
A brother of mine, of lofty aspirations
هدية من شاعر مطبوع
A gift from an inspired poet
لنا أخ عنده من الحكم
We have a brother who possesses wisdom
وإني لأعطي المستميح بحقه
I give the asker his rightful due
لأحسن من مصافحة الصفاح
More beautiful than the clasping of hands in reconciliation,
أيا من ريقه خمري
O you whose saliva is wine
غزال تبدى فأبدى لنا
A gazelle appeared and showed us
لابن جريج خلق مر
The son of Jurayj is moral rottenness,
أغضى فآمن خائفا
He turned away, placated, though afraid,
وعاتق صبحة جليت علينا
In the dawn's embrace, wonders were revealed to us
لو التقى عيسى بعيسى لما
If Jesus met Jesus, he would not
يا سائلي عن أصل ما قد رأى
O you who ask about the origin of what you see here
ومطرد المودة ليس فيها
The unbroken affection has therein no
الجو قد جلت الثريا نفسها
The atmosphere has adorned itself
يا من له من بعده بعد
O You Who are beyond reach, beyond grasp,
الروض بين الستور والكلل
The garden between the fences and the tamarisk trees,
يا شريف الأغراس والأغراق
O noblest of branches and roots
ألا رب مله له قامة
Behold, many a slender one has a gait
عندنا زهرة لها إشراق
We have a flower with radiant glow
أقبل على اللهو ودع من فندا
Indulge in merriment and abandon whoever reproaches you
عقيق الشقيق ومينا الخضر
The ruby lip and emerald green
كن يا نديمي طيب النفس
My soul's companion, do be calm of heart
سكن يجود على السكن
A calm that bestows itself upon calmness
النبت بين مفضض ومذهب
The blossoms amidst the parted and gilded leaves,
يا ذا الذي وخدت مطية لومه
O you whose mount was blamed for his fault,
أخي راحنا ما بين در حبابها
My brother, we roamed between the pearls of its affection,
يابن الفطوسة عندي
O son of nobility in me
يا أخا لا يمر حلو الإخاء
O brother, let not the sweetness of brotherhood
ناحت فواخت سحب وكرها الفلك
The cheeks of clouds have wept, and the sky abhors their crying,
لنا أخ خير بلا شر
We have a brother, best without evil,
إذا أحسنت تربية لحمد
If you raise a child well, hoping for praise,
لك عندي مينا من الهليون
For you I have a port of dreams
لك عندي دستيجة مختومه
I have for you a sealed chest,
ورقص كشعري في الإفتنان
With dancing like my hair in rapture
أيها الشاعر مهلا
O poet, hold on!
رأيت من لست له ذاكرا
I saw one whose memory escapes me
الغيم يبسط في السماء ويفرش
The clouds spread across the sky and unfurl
وخل له تاج من الذكر لم تزل
A palm tree with a crown of mention that did not cease
لا تسألن عيسى فما
Do not ask Jesus for he will not
وزامر يكذب فيه عائبه
With lyres whose faults its charms disguise,
لا تسترن عن فقير
Do not conceal from the poor
أرى الدهر يبسا ليس ينبت منعما
I see time barren, bearing no fruit,
بسخا عامل طرقناه يوما
With stinginess we reproached a man one day,
جنيت فأعطاني ذمام احتماله
I sought his favor, so he gave me reins to bear it,
أتى زائري من صدغه مثل صده
My visitor came to me, his cheek like his sword's edge,
تيه عيسى لم يدعه
Jesus' wandering never left him
الغيم يخلط نوحه ببكائه
The clouds mix their wailing with their weeping,
أيها اللائم لي في حب من
O you who blame me for loving someone
لحقتك بالإقرار مني أحثه
I confess to you what I urge
أبو إسحاق في تعب
Abu Ishaq in exhaustion
أذاق قلبي أسى بهجرته
He made my heart taste sorrow by his abandonment
جوامع أوهامي تقصر عن قدري
My imaginations fall short of my worth
اشرب على فحم من تحته لهب
Drink from the embers, beneath which a flame lies,
تهاونت مني بالذي فيك نظما
You belittled what was composed in me
قد قلت لما جفاني
When he was harsh to me
أمسيت في سبل الهوى متحيرا
I wander lost in the paths of passion
لا زال أحمد في الورى محمودا
Ahmad is still praised among people
ما أنس لا أنس غياثا وقد
What solace have I, no solace relieves me, though
الغرب بالليل مسك
The West is musk at night,
الزهر مطوي ومنشور
The flowers folded and unfolded
قم فانحر الراح يوم النحر بالماء
Rise, and on the day of sacrifice, slaughter for water,

Blossom beautifully that the rectangle may live by it
يا موردا من جود
O source of generosity
الدهر ما بين مطوي ومبسوط
Time is between folded and unfolded,
إذا ما زارني بركات يوما
When blessings visit me one day
يا طلعة القمر المنير
O rising moon so bright
وبركة قد أفادنا عجبا
A blessing it brought that amazed us
أيا قلب خل عنان الهوى
Oh heart, loosen the reins of passion
إذا كدر المرء ألفاظه
When a man muddies his words
يا شقيق الشقيق صدغا وخدا
O cheek, so soft and fair
رضاب كالرحيق الخسرواني
Gentle as perfume, radiant as the morning star
إذا نموذج شعري
If a poetic model
عندي لون طبخته بيدي
I have a color that I brewed by hand
لي صاحب حر من الأصحاب
I have a friend, noble among companions,
يا أيها الحاوي الذي لم تزل
O container that snakes have always
نوال ما لريضه وثوب
The sand that is trod bears no fruit,
لا تعر داعي الخلاعة لحظا
Do not pay any attention to the caller to decadence,
خذ في الخلاعة والتصابي
Take refuge in solitude, among the gardens and hills,
رأى وجدي به فزها وصدا
My friend gladdened me when I saw him, and turned me away.
أيا حسن الخلق قم نصطبح
O you of perfect manners, arise, let us greet the morn,
دران در ندى ودر أقاحي
Pearls of dew and pearls of meadows,
تمتعت من شعرك الباهر
I delighted in your radiant poetry
قد نتج الجو جموحا أشهبا
The air has become turbulent and dusty
اشرب على زهر البنفسج قهوة
Drink coffee on violet's blossom
جفاني من كلفت به لذنب
The one I was charged with has abandoned me for a sin
الغيم في حافتيه البرق يلتهب
The lightning flashes in the clouds' edges
إنا لأهل تقى وأهل عفاف
We are the people of piety and chastity,
سقى غصني وبل العطاء فأورقا
He watered my branches, and the rain of generosity made them leaf
قم يا صديقي نصطبح مشمولة
Rise my friend let's have a wonderful morning
إذا وصف المرء شيئا ولم
When a man describes something undeservedly
ألا رب محتال عذل غدا
Alas! Many a scheming flatterer
ماذا رميت به من
What have you been accused of
أصبحت أكثر خلق الله كلهم
I have fallen deeply in love with a garden
عذري وعتبك ذا رطب وذا خشن
My apology and your reproach, one is soft and one is harsh
وظبية من ظباء الإنس آنسة
And a gazelle of humankind, companionable
ومستهام بشرب الراح باكرها
Intoxicated with drinking wine at dawn,
يا ابن الأجاج الملك لا
O son of kings, do not contend
قد عنون الروض ويك بالخضر
The garden has been adorned with greenery
يا موقظ العتب الذي هو راقد
O you who rebukes dormant reproach to rekindle what lies extinguished
إذا لم تلحق الكرم المساعي
If exertion cannot reach excellence
وقائلة جب الفلوات حتى
She said, "Roam the breadth of the deserts
طرف الشباب جموح
لنا مغن من بني الجند
أنل ذنب خلك سلم الرضا
صد عن الصد فيا حبذا
البسر يجلو نفسه
قم نبتكر بكرا لها أنوار
اشرب على جوهر منثور
يا ذا الذي يطلب في طرسي
قنوعي بدون الدون لا نقص همة
قم يا نديمي نصطبح قهوة
الدهر مد وجزر
جمالي وزيني إذا ما حضر
إن أبا منصور ما إن له
سوالف سوسن وخدود ورد
وقائل لي قولا
الأرض تجلى بزهر
خمر بدار الفناء
ألا طوبى لمن أمسى وأضحى
أيها التائه الذي
عانقني والدجى كطرته
صار فظا بعد رقته
أرى الغيم يخلع من خزه
وميت المن حتى الإمتنان
وليلة أيقظني معانقي
يا ذا الذي همته اللهو
زفرات ولوعة واكتئاب
إذا كان للإنسان رزق تقاذفت
إذا فت في عضدي صاحب
ما بال طيف خيال كان يطرقنا
ذو غضب قاتلي بعلته
عطايا للندى منها شيات
جسم زجاج وروح راح
أرحب بالضيف والمجتدي
أيهذا الصديق لا عتب إن لم
تشتت شمل الصبر واتصل الضد
لنا سكن لم يسكن الشعر خده
رشئي المقلد
يا ذا الذي لم يجد ما
يا أيها الرشأ الذي قد عذرا
يا ذا الذي قيل له إنني
لنا راح مشعشعة كذكرك
قد فضض الجو بالغيوم وقد
ما لي أرى الدهر لا تحلو مرارته
يا طيب نشوتنا على
تاهت بوجه أزهر
الجو في مصمته وخزه
أحسن بداري إذا لاحت مجالسها
إني لآنف من ثغر أقبله
خزائن الحمد لا تفنى إذا فنيت
أنا عبد لآل عبد مناف
وذي دلال له في خده شعر
يا أخا قط ما اقتضى
دله دله على إذلالي
أيا من تردى بالصبا وتسربلا
يا ذا الذي ما إن له
لئن سقاني أخ له همم
إذا أعوز العز طلابه
يا ذا الذي أنزل بي
يا أيها البر الذي بره
لا صاحب إلا الذي أعضاؤه
أبركت يا بركات راحلة الهوى

وشاعر عجبه من العجب
وشادن ظل يبكي يوم ودعني
تفاحنا بمجلس الهبات
قد قلت قول امرئ يفضله
وشاعر سيئة طويته
يا سيدا سؤدده تحت
قالوا التحي فاسل عنه
لا بارك الله فيمن
ومهفهف كالغصن في حركاته
فاز من لم تكن له سيئات
يا صاح لا تصغ إلى لفظة
أستودع الله ظبيا كان يلبسني
قم فاصطبح قبل يكبو
وصافية لها حبب تراه
غنى فأبكى بصوته الفرنجا
مر بنا في قباء ديباج
ما لأبي إسحاق في ذكرى فرج
يا عاذلي في الصبوح
قد قلت للعاذل في حب من
وعاشق باح لي بما باحا
اشرب على نار الشقائق فالندى
تقطرت عن ظهر الرضا ولطالما
عارضه مثل البرد
أخ زاد معناه في صده
أبا أحمد شتان عندك ناشر
متى يشتفي قلب الدنو من البعد
ألا رب خمار طرقت تعسفا
صف صدغا كصده
يا من نداه سلس القياد
ومتيم ترك الفراق جفونه
والله يا كهفي ويا سندي
السحب ترضع من بنات الأرض ما
لغير طريف من طريفي وتالدي
الأرض تضحك والسماء بضدها
خليلي لا عذر على مذهب الهوى
أنحلني بصده
لما رأت دمعي غداة وداعها
مضحك أحلى من الشهد
يا من أرى نصحه فرضا لعزته
يا أيها الزاهد في الزهد
يا معاذي حقا ويا أستاذي
رو بالوبل من صلاحك دينا
وشاعر جملته أنه
الماء منبسط والزهر منتشر
يا نجم قد لاحت نجوم القطر
يا ساحر الطرف قد بدا السحر
الروض في حليه وجوهره
يا أيها الخل الذي
بدا فحسبناه بدرا منيرا
ودجن مسبل الأطناب جون
أخ لي صافي الود من كدر الغدر
زها بالخمائل من شعره
أيا من هو الماء الزلال الذي يجري
غاد الصبوح مع الصباح المسفر
قد راق هذا الزمان من كدره
زارني في أوائل الشهر بدري
عبرت بلحظي على داره
وليلة هجر بت أرقب صبحها
أنا مملوك لمالكة
أحسن بفعل الحسن بن جعفر
أخلوق يسيل من كافور
أنا الذي أشعاره

الغيم ممدود السرادق
دموع جرى يوم الوداع خلوقها
أبى الدهر تحلو مرارة طعمه
وظبي بدا الشعر في خده
وصاحب كان يلقاني فيحسبني
ذكرت الفراق فأقلقتني
يوم أغر من الزمان أنيق
وشادن حسنه يستوقف الحدقا
ستائر الأوراق منصوبة
وهيفاء لولا ما تملك وجهها
الطل من فوق الشقيق
مر بنا في مورد شرق
أيا تاركي بالصد أضنى وأنهك
تحاجبت عني واستترت ولم يكن
يا أيها الغر الجهول الذي
يا من يظاهرني بالنصح في العذل
كن أبدا للصديق محتملا
أبا الفضل تبدي تمصبطرما
يا من يقدر أنه مثلي
يا غزالا رضابه سلسبيل
كتمت الذي ألقاه منك عن الورى
إذا ما الوعد خاف من المطال
يا من يحب أذى المحب بمطله
لي خليل ليس فيه
إذا ما استدف القوت لي من وجوهه
اليوم يوم الجام والرطل
لا تعتمد عتبا يكدر ما صفا
أيا من قبيلة إقباله
عجاج ضباب قد تجلله وبل
ألا رب ضيف تقنصته
يا أنظف العالم في الغسل
قد قلت للقائل لا تنبسط
يا من غدا برداء الحسن مشتملا
وليلة ليس لها مثل
أخمد من أحزاننا ما اضطرم
وخندريس سردوسية
القطر قز والغيم يبرمه
القطر بين منثر ومنظم
ما القاش إلا فلك
وقالوا التحي من كان نورا فأظلما
يا رب ذات قلائد نازعتها
إنا لنبن على ما أسسته لنا
وسابق من الجياد أدهم
يامن إذا زاره صديق
أرقت لبرق هز عطفيه في الدجى
أنر بصبح الوصل عيشي فقد
أجود فلا أبقي ورائي ذخيرة
