1. I tested the people of this world, but found in them
None except the miser with meanness filling his clothes.
١. بَلَوتُ بَني الدُنيا فَلَم أَرَفيهِمُ
سِوى مَن غَدا وَالبُخلُ مِلءُ ثِيابِهِ
2. So I stripped myself of the scabbard of contentment, unsheathing my sword,
And cut off my hopes in them with its edge.
٢. فَجَرَّدتُ مِن غِمدِ القَناعَةِ مُرهَفاً
قَطَعتُ رَجائي مِنهُم بِذُبابِهِ
3. Thus none shall see me standing in their path,
Nor sitting at their door.
٣. فَلا ذا يَراني قائِماً في طَريقِهِ
وَلا ذا يَراني جالِساً عِندَ بابِهِ
