We have a singer, good company,

لنا مغن حسن العشره

1. We have a singer, good company,
And wine more fragrant than embers.

١. لَنا مُغَنٍّ حَسَنُ العِشرَهُ
وَخَمرَةٌ أَذكى مِنَ الجَمرَه

2. Don't withhold your hand from me, neither
An apple nor raisins.

٢. وَلَستُ تُخلي لي يدي أَنتَ مِن
تُفّاحَةٍ كَلّا وَلا بَسرَه

3. We've kindled a fire devoid
Of glowing embers within it.

٣. وَقَد وَقَدنا فَحَماً ما لَهُ
شَرارَةٌ في طَبعِها شِرَّه

4. If its flames at dawn die down,
My glutton brother's eye waters for it.

٤. إِذا غَدا ساسَمُهُ بَقماً
قَرَّت بِهِ عَينُ أَخي القِرَّه

5. Be content with what your brother has,
Who contents himself with crumbs and broken bread.

٥. فَاِقنَع بِما عِندَ أَخيكَ الَّذي
يَقنَعُ بِالفَضلَةِ وَالكِسرَه

6. A scrap from him would be princely,
Which the experienced would accept as bounty.

٦. فُتُوَّةٌ مِنهُ عَقيلِيَّةٌ
يُجيزُها مَن كانَ ذا خِبرَه

7. Why don't we give the day its due
And gain wisdom from drunkenness?

٧. لِمَ لا نُوَفّي يَومَنا حَقَّه
وَنَشمُتُ الفَطنَةَ بِالغِرَّه

8. By God! No camel's back will bear us
Until we see lessons in our drunkenness.

٨. تاللَهِ لَن يَعبُرَ ظُهرٌ بِنا
حَتّى نُرى مِن سُكرِنا عِبرَه
