1. I entered upon a wine-seller at night,
And the wings of night were jet black,

2. Spreading clouds in the horizons,
In the morning and in the evening.

3. When the winds blow beneath me,
Though they blow from the winds.

4. So he asked: “Who is this young man?” I replied “A guest,
Dressed in virtues and generosity.”

5. He said: “What do you want, may I be ransomed for you?”
I said: “Quench my soul’s thirst.”

6. He stood up towards ripe jugs,
Wrapped in camphor and perfume.

7. He opened the seal of the oldest one, so it shone
Its lights upon the darkness.

8. And he brought out from it in a pitcher some wine,
More delicious than first picked grapes in the valley.

9. And he came with a glass of sweet figure,
Slender waist, swishing dress.

10. You’d see it swaying with manners and grace,
And wonder atop the smooth neck.

11. Whenever a critic saw it, he’d say
“Your lover has nothing to reproach you for.”

12. These are the days that pass away,
And time’s nature is impudent.

13. So enjoy cups after cups,
With joys and play in the mornings.
