1. If the wealthy man took pity on us
I'd be assured of slander and gossip
١. لَو كانَ ذو الرِثَّةِ يَرثى لَنا
أَمِنتُ مِن قالٍ وَمِن قيلِ
2. But he's more forbidding than his visage
Though once was fond of kissing
٢. لَكِنَّهُ أَوحَشُ مِن وَجهِهِ
وَكانَ مَأنوساً بِتَقبيلِ
3. So between us now only the reproachers
Can come and go with their length and breadth
٣. فَصارَت العُذّالُ ما بَينَنا
تَدخُلُ بِالعَرضِ وَبِالطولِ
