The specter of imagination afflicted me, surrendering,
لو نسبناك في بني عبد شمس
If we ascribed you among the clan of Abd Shams
تنفس الروض عن نواره الأرج
The garden breathed out its bright lights,
أرابه البان إذ لم يقض آرابا
The gazelle bewildered him, for it did not settle to rest
يقول خدي روضة
My cheek says it's a garden
لئن زاد في ذقنه حمرة
Though his beard grew redder
رحلوا وهم بين الضلوع حلول
They left while they were still nestled between my ribs
دون بيض الخدور سمر العوالي
Without the eggs of partridges, the plateau summits are brown
قاد وقاد السود نحو
He led the black men onwards
من كان في الناس ذا حب وصفت له
For one who has love amongst mankind I described
أرح المطية برهة يا حادي
Give the camel a respite, O driver
عارض الصفح في يديك الصفاحا
The page offered itself in your hands as a tray
سندوها من القدود رماحا
They propped it up with spears from the qudd (striped cloth)
أقام فلا عتبا رعاه ولا عتبى
He stayed, so no blame or displeasure
نمت بسر غرامه الأجفان
The eyelids bloomed with the secret of his passion,
قد عصينا النهى فكيف النهاتا
We disobeyed advice, so how can we avoid perdition?
كافورة في الثلج مدفونة
A camphor buried in the snow
صاحبت في سفري لك الآمالا
I accompanied you on my journey with hopes
ألحق بنفسج فجري وردتي شفقي
My purple flower at dawn and my blushing rose
الناس دونك كلهم أكفاء
The people around you are all equals
الحيا من غيوثك البارقات
The life from your lightnings
بدور الحي مالت للأفول
The stars of the living inclined towards sunset,
قبلته يوما وقابلته
I kissed him one day and met him
شق الصباح غلالة الظلماء
Morning cleaved the shackles of darkness
وبدا الهلان وخلفه الدد
The crescent moon rose with the Pleiades behind,
يا هذه لا تنطقي
O you, do not speak,
سارت مطيهم بهم تمطو
Their camels strode with them striding
والشمس في وقت الأصيل
The sun in the time of blossoms
خذوا لقلبي أمانا من تجنيه
Take care of my heart from its suffering
منع الشتاء من الوصول
Winter was held back from arriving
لقد طال ما أسهب الناس فيك
Long have people been verbose with you
أعن وسن ترنو عيونك أم سكر
Is it the magic of youthful eyes that you glance with, or is it intoxication
عني فلم يبق امرؤ حاضر
My eyes, no man remains in their presence,
يقول أناس لو نعت لنا الهوى
People ask, if only we could define love for us
وعسكري كلما رمته
A soldier, whenever I aim at him
أيجور الزمان يا ثقة المل
The days pass by, O pillar of the state
أودعت نسج الملح
I have entrusted to the weave of salt
لولا ظبى تنسل من لحظاته
Had it not been for the gazelle gliding through moments
لأية حال فيض دمعك هتان
For what state is the flowing of your tears submissive?
خرق بها سجادة
With it he tore a prayer rug -
حيث التفت فكثبان وقضبان
Where the sand dunes turned as the caravans marched on,
عزت ضمائره على كتمانه
His virtues made him discreet,
وتفرد في علم النجوم بقسمة
He became uniquely knowledgeable of the stars' divination
نثرن عليه من صدف الخيام
They scattered pearls from the pavilions upon him,
لو حل عن خديه عقد لثامه
If the knot were untied from his cheek
أسائل عنها الركب والدمع سائل
I ask the travelers about her, while tears keep asking,
وا بأبي من لم يدع
By the one I beseech who left
تأنق في صنعتي راقمي
My creator adorned me with his skill
رحلوا فالسقام عندي مقيم
They left, and sickness stays with me
يا من يرى فضل الشتاء
O you who sees the virtue of winter over summer as you rule
وعجل البر فما يستوي
Hasten to do good, for it now avails;
منعتني جاهك في وقفة
Your pomp has denied me a stance
عاذلي عاذري على حب بدر
Reproach me, reproacher, for loving a full moon
تلين لعزمي بالعراء العوائك
My resolve weakens amid obstacles in the wilderness,
قرنت بواو الصدغ صاد المقبل
You joined the Waw of beauty to the Sad of the kisser,
ألا اقبح بدهلك من بلدة
How ugly is your city, so wretched a place,
يا برق سق حيا السحاب الأبرقا
O lightning, water the clouds' pasture,
مدحك أدنى حق نعمائك
Praising you is the least right of your blessings
هذا زمان عليه
This is an era over which
انظر الى الشمس فوق النيل غاربة
Behold the sun above the Nile sinking
وعد الزيارة ثم أخلف
He promised a visit, then broke his word
يا خبيرا بالمعمى
O expert of the blind
أي فؤاد فيك لم يكلف
What heart has she not burdened,
ولو أنني وقرت شعري وقاره
Even if I had composed my poetry with gravity
رب ضحك جنيته من عنوس
I gained laughter from the intimacy of the beloved
سافر إذا حاولت قدرا
Travel if you seek your destiny
وهيفاء فيها إن تأملت أمرها
And in it is a brilliance, if you were to contemplate its matter
ومسامر تسليك عن سنة الكرى
With conversation that distracts you from life's sorrows
يشمر أنفه إن قال شعرا
He wrinkles his nose if he recites poetry
فهمت على البارق الممطر
I understood on the rainy lightning
زامرنا لو شاء إكرامنا
Had our piper desired to honor us
ما أطول الليل على الساهر
How long the night is for the sleepless one
وأمرد يعقد زناره
A young man tying his belt
ليس الحسام حساما
The sword is no sword,
وإني لأهواها وأهوى لقاءها
Roses are red, violets are blue
هذا مقام أبيك فاسم بمجده
This is the abode of your father, so glorify him with praise
شق الكمال عليه جيب سواده
Perfection split open his robe of darkness,
ماست فقيل هي القضيب الأملد
She walked with grace, they said she is a slender branch.
لو أنها سمحت بطيف عائد
If she had allowed a returning apparition
تعود الطرد بها والطراد
He was accustomed to being driven away and driving others away
فلما استنار سراج السما
When the lamp of the sky grew bright
عرضت لمعترض الصباح الأبلج
The radiant dawn revealed to the objector
حفظ اليتيمة كل من
The orphan was protected by all
ولو لم أشاهد منه جود يمينه
Though I had not seen his generous right hand
سائل لوى خبت فذاك لواؤه
A questioner asked about a beloved whose absence pains him - that is his affliction,
هذا اللوى لا حط منه لواء
This passion cannot be diminished,
سيدنا الحبر كفه أبدا
Our master's ink, his palm is ever overflowing
أيها اللائم لم غي
O you who blame, why do you blame me for what I have done
ولا برحت تولي جميلا وتقتفي
She does not cease to face a beauty and pursue
يا حافظ الدين الذي
O protector of the faith who
انزع لباسك فالآجال حاكمة
Take off your clothes, for death rules the times
ومضاء يزينه وقفة الحل
With a radiance adorned by a standing at Hil
يا أيها الحبر الإمام
O you the eminent Imam
عودي على اسم الله عودي
Return in the name of Allah, return
أصبحت عبدا في يدي مالك
I have become a slave in the hands of an owner
من يكن جاهلا عطاء الله
He who is ignorant of God's gifts
سلني أجبك فإني عندي الخبر
Ask me, I will answer you for I have the knowledge,
دع العذل إني أكره العذل والغدرا
Leave off reproach! I detest reproach and betrayal,
فحن طيبا من بعدهن الديار
The homes exuded fragrance after they left
لم يلف للهون عاشق جاحد
No lover is blamed for falling madly in love
بين اللوى فالجزع فالمتثلم
Between the twisting valleys, the rock cliffs, and the barren land,
لمن رسوم الديار باللبب
For whom are the traces of the abode in the sand hills
لهن ربوع بالعقيق دواثر
They have meadows in al-Aqeeq left behind,
قد أغتدي والصبح خفاق العذب
The dawn has risen while the night still hovers,
بك الإسلام قد لبس الشبابا
Islam donned its youth with you
مثل سائر لجارحتي أحمد
A well-known example of my two ankles is
أحمد الآبي فيه أبنة
Ahmad's father has a daughter
وصحبة قوم لو يقاس أجلهم
And the company of people whose lifetimes
مل من صبوته ما أملا
He tired of his youth as he wished more,
أبا بكر العبدي عاداك ذو الفتك
Abu Bakr Al-Abdi, you have been wronged by one harmful
يا عمر الطلاء إياك أن
O Umar, beware of confronting me, O Umar the tall
شمس المحاسن قد أطلعتها فلكا
The sun of beauty has risen for you as a planet
أندى وجه وسيم
The face of a handsome one
ما تلقيت بالمضيرة إلا
You have not encountered misfortune
بعثت به حنانا أم جنانا
Did you send it as affection or madness?
سيف القريض كامن في غمده
The sword of poetry lies sheathed
أرقصها مطرب الأغاريد
The bard made her dance
أبثك أني في يد الحب موثق
I confess to you that I am bound by the fetters of love
لو أن ذا قلمي قوى كلمي
If only my pen were strong, my words potent,
يقر لغليلم المليك بن غليلم
King Guliaylma acknowledges the sovereignty,
أما الكواكب فاحتموا بمواكب
The stars gathered in their orbits
وسهم فوارة انبعثت
With fiery arrow launched on high
ردوا لها أيامها الأوائلا
Restore her early days once more,
تهز بك الخطوب من الخطاب
The speeches shake you with tribulations,
تاه بخال خده
Lost in the cheek's beauty
أي نجم من أي شمس وبدر
What star from what sun and full moon
أشفار جفنك لم تزل
Your eyelashes have always been
غنى فكل حاضر
He sang and every listener
لم يشف طيفك لما زارني ألما
Your phantom did not cure my pain when it visited,
ضرب الناس في العلا الأمثالا
People have coined proverbs about the eminent
حتى كأن الدهر حيرني به
As if time itself had confused me with it,
بيني وبين الأمير معرفة
Between me and the prince there is an acquaintance
ما رأينا مثال ذا اليوم يوما
Never before have we seen the day
إليك من ملك سام ومن ملك
To you from an exalted angel and from a sublime king,
منع السلو لعاذر ولعاذل
Forbidden solace to sympathetic and culpable ones
لو لم يحرم على الأيام إنجادي
If the days had not forbidden my salvation
طار عن برقة برق فشم
A lightning bolt flashed from the brightness of lightning, inhaling
لست ممن يظن فيه سوى ما
I am not one who is thought to be
أيها الحاكم بالظن
O judge by suspicion,
بحر القريض تلاطمت أمواجه
The sea of poetry, its waves crashing,
كان لك الله يا أبا الحسن
May Allah protect you, O Abu Al-Hasan
أرى الإقامة أضحت في يد الظعن
I see that the stay has fallen into the hands of weakness
أقبل بوجهك إني عنك منصرف
Turn your face to me, for I am leaving you
يا أيها الحافظ الذي بسنا
O you, the protector, whose rising
تدانيت دارا والوصول شسوع
You drew near a house though arriving is out of reach,
عاف سمعي ذكر المحل العافي
My hearing is delighted by mention of the pleasing abode,
عرس بالتوفيق والسعد
Abu al-Wafa ibn Abi Sa'd was wed
عندنا نبت ربيع
We have a springtime bloom
كم من فتاة تولى أمرها ذكر
How many a girl whose affairs a male took charge of
قل للشريف على تقوله
Say to the pretentious noble in his dishonesty,
طرفي في طاهر وكفي
My eyes are pure and so are my palms,
عزمي وحزمي والحسام الماضي
My resolve, my determination, and my unsheathed sword
لقد فزت من نثر الكلام ونظمه
I have excelled in prose and verse
أظن البدر نازعك الكمالا
I think the full moon envied your perfection
كانت يد لك عند عبد
You had a hand when you were a servant alone
متى يملك الحلم الدنو على البعد
When will forebearance subdue the far distances,
وكتاب صغرت أجزاؤه
And a book whose parts have been made small
كوكب لاح بين بدر وشمس
A star shone between the full and crescent moon,
أبدى الفرند نجابة النصل
The sapling showed its blade's sharpness,
هذي المحاسن قد أوتيتها هذي
These beauties you've been endowed with
قولوا لنجم الدين بل بدره
Tell Najm al-Din, his full moon
راح يوافي طراده طرده
He set out to meet his fate, so it met and dismissed him,
يا حافظا علقت بذي
O guardian attached to whose noble side
هل لركب العراق بعد نجوده
Does the caravan of Iraq after its generosity
قس الفصاحة والملاحة صادني
He who judged eloquence and cleverness has saddened me,
أنت أبكيت بالمضرة عيني
You made my eyes weep with sorrow
نزلوا فادعوا نزال نزال
They dismounted and called for a halt, a halt,
حمل الريح بالأصيل سلامه
The wind carried his greetings,
إن كان قد زاد في رقاعته
If he has increased in his foolishness
أنا عبد ودك لا أخل وإن تكن
I am your devoted slave, I do not fail
وأسمر يفتك بي طرفه
A dark-eyed gazelle slays me with his glances
سرت والصبر والغواني وخلف
You left, and patience, and the songs, and behind
لقيت حمامي إذ فقدت حميمي

خلق الإنسان من حمأ
Man is created of haste
أصبحت من صرف الزمان الجاري
I have become intoxicated by the passing days
أتمنحنا أوطانهن الكواكب
Do you grant us countries as planets
عجبا من ذا الزمان الساقط
How strange is this degraded age
ما لمن في الهوى من خلاق
What grace in love for the enamoured!
بأبي من زها بخديه ورد
By the one whose cheek is adorned with a blossoming rose
الله يعلم أنني ما خلته
God knows I did not leave Him
سألت بعض الزناة عن شرف
I asked some adulterers about honor
خبراني بهول يوم الفراق
Tell me of the agony of the day we parted
الحمد لله ليس لي نشب
Praise be to God, I have no grudge
لا تجرد علي مرهف جفني
Do not bare your blade against me
الله أعطاك من أعدائك الظفرا
God gave you victory over your enemies
أعلمت أن من الصدود خدورا
Do you know that from repulsions come affections?
حرس الدهر بعين لم تنم
It watched over fate with an eye that did not sleep
قل للإمام الذي فضائله
Tell the Imam whose virtues
ما لقلبي على فراقك صبر
My heart has no patience for your absence,
يا بن عدلان يا أخس الرجال
O son of Adlan, O most despicable of men
أخي دع البطالة واله عنها
O brother, leave idleness and turn away from it
إليك تشد في العلم الرحال
To you we head seeking knowledge
يا حسن وجه البحر حين بدا
O beauty of the sea's face when it appeared,
يا أولا في كل عد
O first in every count
يا سائلي عن خبر الرغيف
O you who ask about the news of bread
مالك قلبي عن يد
The owner of my heart escaped my hand,
لله در مجن قد جننت به
All praise is for Allah, I'm crazy about a beautiful girl
إن كسر الخليج صادفه اليو
The day I broke the Gulf, poverty broke me
هل في قطار النصر نسر واقع
Is there a falling eagle in the train of victory,
زهرن فاعجب لروض ماله زهر
The meadows bloomed, so marvel at a garden that has no flowers,
غناء حمام في معاطف بان
The cooing of doves in the folds of the branches
هبهم رضوا غير قلبه وطنا
They were pleased with a homeland other than his heart
قامت حروب الهوى على ساق
The wars of passion rose on a leg
إن ابن عدلان حاز بفطنته
The son of Adlan attained his wit
وسريع الجواب نازعته القول
I hastily questioned his strength of mind
ألشيم برق أم شميم عرار
Is it lightning in the clouds or the fragrance of meadows
يا ذا الذي أنطقه ماله
O you whom wealth made eloquent
وقحمل الخضاب على المشيب لكي
He dyed the gray hair with henna so that
أرسلت لي سطرين قد جمعا
You sent me two lines that gathered
وأشعث مثل أهل النار ثاو
With disheveled hair like the people of Hell athirst,
أنا من عينيك نشوان
I am intoxicated by your eyes,
سبت فؤادي وطرفي
My heart and my gaze were captivated,
ولقد رأيت البدر وهو كغرة
I saw the moon, a pearl
ومشرق يشبه بدر الدجى
Bright as the full moon in the gloaming night
قل لنجم الدين يا من نهتدي
Say to the star of faith, O you whom we follow
قد قلت لما انثنى وثاب منهزما
I said, when he turned back defeated and fled
طول قرنيه وعلاهما
He lengthened their horns and raised them,
يا أيها السيف العليم وعندهم
O wise sword, though they have swords,

طلعت ربيعا من ربيع وأربع

قد كان شعرك صالحا

ترددنا الى الدار

أحق بقاع الأرض بالرفض بلدة
The land's most deserving of rejection is a town
يقول وأبصر حالي الحسود
The envious one says and sees my state,
قالوا احتجبت ولا عجب

ترى النجم مكحولا بميل سهاده

قالوا لقد صار في مهذبكم

يمينك الغيث إلا أنه هطل
Your right hand is rain, except it has poured down
أكوكب بشر من جبينك لائح
A star of good omen gleams on your serene brow,
رأيت الفقيه أبا طالب
I saw the jurist Abu Talib
قف بقفراء يباب
Stand at the ruins of Layla,
يا حافظا تشهد أخلاقه
O witness of his morals
يا إماما أحسن به من إمام
O Imam, who is better than any imam,
ومهما رام أن يرقى مداها
No matter how he strives to extend his reach
لو شاء بل بها ذيول الحندس
If only he had adorned it with the skirts of Hindustan
بأبي وغير أبي الفدا
By my father and others, I ransom
يا نجم دين الله حي
O star of the living religion of God
ها قد علمت صحيح ودي
You knew my true affection
وأمير كلما أكرمته
Whenever I honor a prince
أخالد إن الحمد يبقي لأهله
I feel praise endures for those who deserve it
وكم رام مجدك من حاسد
How many a jealous foe has sought your glory
لمن الحمول بجدة تسري
For whose camels does the convoy set forth at dawn?
يا جاعل النيل صبغ جلدته
O maker of the Nile with its dark blue hue
نعم الله كالوحوش فما تأ
God's blessings are like wild beasts - they only befriend
لي في المصيف طريق
I have in summer a path
دون ما بيننا من الود يكفي
Without our friendship being enough
أجزعت بعد إقامتي من رحلتي
I fretted when I left after my journey
لولا أبو الحسن المهذب لم يكن
Had it not been for Abu al-Hasan the refined
ينافر إيقاعه صوته
His rhythm jars his voice
يمينك في النوال وفي الكفاح
Your hand in benevolence and in battle
يا علي الذي دعوه عليا
O Ali, whom Ali has called
منتاب مصركما بالرفد مغمور
The chosen one of your Egypt is flooded with gifts
يا أمير الذكاء يا بن خليف
O Prince of wit, O Ibn Khulayf's son
إذا تذكرت أياما مضت فمضى
When I recall days gone by and passed away,
ثنت عنك يوم الرحيل العنانا
The day of parting, the camel turned away,
يا من تكفل في النقوع تكلفا
O you who undertook with pretense to help me when I stumbled
رب يوم له من النقع سحب
The day of my Lord, the clouds pouring down
نهيت عن نصحي من رام
I forbid my advice to him who wished
يروع الذئب حيث سواك راع
The wolf is frightened wherever but you it harries,
يا سيدا لا زلت دا
O master, you are still generous
ضربوا الخيام على الندى والخيم
They pitched tents upon the dew and small tents
وصاحب قسته بنفسي
A friend whose nature I know by heart
لسري في صدوركم مكان
My secret has a place within your hearts
ولي بالخيف من نعمان ظبي
I have no fear of Na'aman the gazelle hunter
لجأت إلى عتباك فاستبق من لجا
I seek refuge in your rebuke, so hasten to help one who seeks refuge,
تنشر أثوابنا مدائحه
Our clothes spread his praises
الفكر في الرزق كيف يأتي
Thoughts of sustenance and how it comes
متعتب من غير ما سبب
Reproaching me for no reason at all
سلني عن الحب يا من ليس يعرفه
Ask me of love, O you who do not know it
قل لفخر الأئمة العلم العا
Say to the pride of the Imams, the scholar, the knowledgeable one,
وكأنما مدح الأثير أثارها
As though the praise of the noble one aroused it
مدحْتَ نُصَيراً على زَمرِه
You praised a leader among his tribe
هل يا حداة النجب
O youths of noble lineage,
وجحدت الهوي عند العواذل ضنة
I denied my love to the censurers out of jealousy,
تولى ابن حجر بأشعاره
The son of Hujr took to his poems
قسما بسؤددك القديم
I swear by your ancient felicity,
يا سائلي بالضعيف خذ خبرا
O you who ask about the weak one, listen,
مدحت نصيرا على زمره
You praised Nuṣair for his band
إن كنت يوما معيني عند نازلة
If I was once your ally in adversity,
يا فارس المسلمين انظر إلي تجد
O knight of Muslims, look at me, you will find
أروه الجلنار من الخدود
I saw him dragged in shackles
راخ لها في السبب
Let it rest in the reason
نجوم علاك قد طلعت سعودا
The stars of your glory have risen auspiciously,
شعري كمجدك من يرمه مقصر
My poetry, like your glory, whoever scorns it is remiss,
وإحسان شعري فيكمو مخبر
My poetry's goodness is a talebearer
يا أسعد السعداء دع
O happiest of the happy, let
يوم قضى لك بالحبور
A day has passed for you in felicity
احكم على الثقلين الإنس والجان
Judge the two burdens, mankind and jinn
الى الحظ الجليل تتوق نفسي
My soul yearns for sublime fortune,
أبعد شيبي لشبابي إياب
After my youth, I long for my past youthhood
ولا عدمت أيامنا منك سيدا
Our days have never been without you as a master
بأبي سقيم الجفن صحح
By my sickly eyelids I implore
وعلقته متعلقا
I hung it, hanging
يا رب ليل أشتهي لباسه
O Lord of the night whose garment I yearn for
للمرء قبل سماع وعظ الواعظ
Before listening to the preacher's sermon
ضاء ليل الخطوب منك بفجره
The night's sorrows shone with your dawn,
أحبب طرسا رأيت صباحه
I fell in love with Tursa when I saw his morning
يا ملكا وهو بالتقى ملك
O King, who with piety is an angel,
وأبغضت فيك النخل والنخل يانع
I have come to hate the date palms around you, though they bear fruit,
كأن دارين لها دار
It's as if it has a house with another house,
مولاي أمرك قد تقدم
My Master, your command has come
أظنه حاذر سلوانا
I think he is wary of our trysts
وافيت منفردا عن الأنظار
You came alone, unseen by others' eyes,
إنها أعرضت عن الإعراض
She turned away from turning away
وشى بسرك عرف الريح حين سرى
The breeze spread your secret when it blew by
طرحنا فوق غاربها الزمانا
We pitched it above the setting of time
إن قال وفى مسرعا ما قاله
If he who pledged fulfills his word with haste
لست أدري أتحفة تتهادى
I know not if it is a gift being passed around
يا أيها الثقة الذي وثقت به
O you in whom I placed my trust
قدر الأثير على الأثير علي
The fate of the sublime to the sublime belongs
أي حبيب في خده شرطه
Any beloved whose cheek has a mole,
لم يطق هواه فباحا
He could not bear his passion, so he confessed
وليلة أطلعت في جنحها
And one night you brought forth
أطاع ما يأمره الناهي
He obeyed what the prohibitor ordered him,
الشعر للشعراء مغنم معرك
Poetry is the poet's war spoils
لمن الشموس غربن في الأكوار
For whom did the suns set in the horizons,
كم مرضت صبوتي فجاءت
How many times my youth fell ill,
جاءنا يحمل ذقنا
He came to us carrying a beard
ولطيفة الألفاظ لكن قلبها
Though gentle were her words, her heart
أشاقك برق بالدجنة لائح
Your lightning flashed in the darkness, shining bright,

What the scholar says lasts, preserved
قلت لمن يسأل عن أحمد
I said to those who ask about Ahmed
أزهر جنان من جنان تنمقا
Gardens of paradise flourished, blooming,
ذكر الركب الذي نزحا
He recalled the caravan that departed
يا ذرويا كان في حبه
O you who was tender in his love
يا مجيري من صرف دهر أذلا
O my protector from the vicissitudes of an abasing fate
وغادة عادت الدنيا ببهجتها
When morning came with its splendor
ولرب خرق جبته بأضامر
And for many a tattered garment I've risked
هيهات تعطف بالملام جموحا
In vain you chide the obdurate,
لا أشرب الراح إلا
I do not drink wine
وأغن لولا ثغره الوضاح
Had his radiant smile been less bright
ديارهم قد أطمستك الطوامس
Their abodes have been erased by time
أصبحت بين سوالف وعيون
I stand between conversations and eyes,
أبدى شمائل جفوة وبعاد
He showed signs of aloofness and distance,
ولما بدا ركب السحاب تسوقه
When the caravan of clouds appeared, driven
وصل اهتمامك بي فخبرني
Your care for me has arrived, so inform me
بان الحبيب فبان الصبر والجلد
The beloved appeared, so patience and composure vanished,
إني أبثك حالي
I confide in you my state,
أجودك أم جود المطر
Is your generosity or the rain's generosity more bountiful?
تقلب الدهر من حال إلى حال
Fate keeps changing from one state to the next
تغير عن مودته وحالا
هو ملتقى أرج النواسم فانظرا
عقدوا شعورهم عمائم
أسف موثق ودمع طليق
على الطائر الميمون والكوكب السعد
تولى سقي دارهم الولي
وكم طويت بساط البيد منفردا
وأدهم كالغراب سواد لون
مر بيمناه على طاره
بعينيه شكري لا بكأس عقاره
شجته بظهر الصالحية دور
إن جوى لو يذهب الأوجالا
أنا من جوارك في أعز مكان
ما ضر ذاك الريم ألا يريم
والله يكفي أن أردد
انظر لمطرد المياه بصفحتي
وأبيض لون الآبنوس إذا سرى
أنا في الكريهة كالشهاب الساطع
أصابت سهام البأس قلب المطامع
قل في الزمان فإنه
وغني الجمال يشرق خدا
أما إنه لولا الخيال المعاود
جرى في عوده ماء الشباب
إن بلغتك العيس نجدا

لا تثن جيدك إن الروض قد جيدا

أهلا ببيت خميلة

لا مددت اليمين إلا بعضب
سيان من بالصفح مكسبه

يا عاذلي لا تطيلا عذلي
لمن ربوع مقفرات باللوى
تصطف في الجنبين أرماحهم
اجتل اللهو حمرة في بياض
لذي الظلامة عد الظلم والشنب
رب أمر أتاك لا تحمد الفع
أبليت بعدك في الأنام ظنوني
سفرت عنك أوجه الأسفار
عهدي بحيك وهو حي عامر
آيات جدك لم تزل تتلى
قفا فاسألا مني زفيرا وأدمعا
دعته المثاني وادعته المثالث
سعود سنيكما كملت سناء
ضحكت إلى الأحباب
ولو عددت مالك من أياد
ما زال يخدع قلبه حتى هفا
قام عن قوس حاجبيه
ومنزل جاور الجوزاء مرتقيا
علمنا وقد مات الكمال التساويا
لها ناظر في ذرى ناضر
دقق ابن اليسار سي المعاني
أصبحت أعذر عاشقا في حبه
