1. I have become intoxicated by the passing days
With wine and morning draughts.

2. I wander like the wandering Arab tribes
From the claws of fate to its talons,

3. As though I never delighted in the ink
Of the beneficial Imam Adh-Dhahabi.

4. By Allah, my glory marched nowhere
Except to his doors, my poetry.

5. O you wearing the garb of praise while stripped
Of the raiment of disgrace in the wilderness!

6. I complain to you of three things that enfeebled
My body so I totter on the verge of collapse

7. And I say what the disreputable one said, translating
His condition through the fruits of his thoughts:

8. “I am a poet, I am grateful, I am a publisher,
I am a man, I am hungry, I am naked.”

9. It is the sunnah and I am the guarantor of half of it
So be guarantor of its second half in full.

10. For me, fire is like a question—do you think
You could spare me from entering the fire?
