1. What heart has she not burdened,
What eye has she not made weep?

2. Had patience shown me favor, I'd have shunned her,
Yet how can I avoid her, she gave no respite.

3. I think not ribs content with all
The wounds of separation they keep

4. Misfortune has conspired, feigning
To clasp in its arms the weak.

5. The rugged is unsafe on peaks
As the smooth is unsafe in steep

6. While the plucked, featherless sparrow
Is like the heavily laden and slow.

7. If the shaggy goat kept to thickets
The lion would not the lamb reap

8. He who cherished the soul's fruits culled
Delights, nor left fruit unplucked

9. The winds of hopes blow their chaser
Down precipices dark and deep

10. While for the youth, death holds meaning
Of clay and shrouds he takes no heed.

11. The young man perishes in life’s spring
The brow engraved in youth does sleep

12. Time’s turns distinguish not between
The base of men and high nobility’s keep

13. If one’s secured ‘gainst it, still the moon
Wanes, though nothing made it weak

14. From his lifetime’s crown of glory
Falls prince Al Yusuf’s turbaned head

15. A star set in the night that shrouds
As it rose in night’s darkness bleak

16. A vine of courtesy that would have yielded
Wine of bravery plucked while green

17. A garden never opened by morn
Ere the hand of fate did it reap

18. A faith ere the ink dried on its pages
The pen in the scripture made obsolete

19. O kin of Abu Yusuf, after him
Take, like Jacob’s for Joseph, to weep

20. Your sea no brook can make bleed
While the sea makes the brook leak

21. With the death knell preoccupy yourself
Let each tread its path to keep

22. While time betrays you not, its days
Are true to never keep their word

23. So take consolation in God, for He
Who entrusts affairs, does suffice
