1. They propped it up with spears from the qudd (striped cloth)
And wiped tears from the eyelids with sifaḥ (handkerchiefs)

2. What a state of peace it had
Which turned into tribulation without any effort

3. It's right to weep blood
When they wounded the hearts with wounds

4. Oh my heart, you're now a captive
Did you lose hope or lay down your weapons?

5. How astonishing that the eyelids, sick
Imprison sound minds

6. Tell your tenth shares which they divided
They drank from you with glances that stabbed

7. Alas, in a stance that makes one wish for death before
So as to rest, not live

8. Where one fears the liṯm (mouth) will string pearls
Or the ināq (embrace) will tie a cloak

9. The mounts are wild due to separation
Dawn among them hurries the spirits

10. The wings of resolve embrace gazelles
Whose blood stains no wings

11. He collects sins against the beloved
Gathering them two by two, moving aside

12. If his tear refuses consolation, say he distracted himself
Or came, it's said, at dawn to confess

13. No shame on one who says passion's shameful
May the Creator kill the salty faces!

14. They forbade me the beloved though he was near
Denied me the wine though it was permitted

15. Time has made me submissive
After I used to spread wide my wings

16. The places of hunting moved away from me
Showing me - were it not for ʿAlī - overthrown

17. A beauty came from Abī l-Ḥasan the Nadīm
Who returned ḥisān to me when it was ugly

18. He was serious in his open-handedness and went too far
We feared it was a joke

19. He was first to favor me, though I sought no gift
Without him, I'd have forgotten generosity

20. His status makes up for his wealth, so he's a lute string
We must pluck as his states suggest

21. When you want, he's a cloud
When you want, he's winds

22. The race track of praise galloped
As if its paths to eulogy were smooth

23. Meters are dumb - if the atmosphere became
A healer for them, they would speak again

24. How many cups of praise were passed around him
Swaying their brims toward him, pleasingly

25. A lover of sublime virtues, driving toward them
A serious eye to attain them, ambitious

26. Turbans are enough, a delicate garden
Where he picks chamomile and pigeon pea

27. And his meanings suffice which his gravity refines
Bringing spirit and respite

28. A nature pictured from clear, sweet water
Emerging like cool, limpid water

29. His soul is disposed toward good, so
It doesn't exceed righteousness and reform

30. O crescent moon, a full moon reared him
I'm not one who fears dawn upon him

31. From Abū l-Qāsim you inherited traits
Increasing their lights for us, clarifying

32. As jewelry is strung on a neck
Though it be like the morning radiance

33. My time with you is a garden of glory
Calling me to promenade and relax

34. So I preempt time, taking the lead
Beneath its branches, comforted at dawn

35. Relief, O Banū Abī l-Faraj, emulate me
In happiness and joys

36. Fasting left you commendably
Thanking your chastity and rectitude

37. The Feast came in the morning after farewells
As if describing your brilliant brow

38. Congratulations - for it was right when
We saw the crescent of your face shine
