1. O youths of noble lineage,
Is there respite for the caravan

2. Whose life when resolved
Upon purpose did not please?

3. Their image moved my heart,
Oh my sorrow, oh my grief,

4. For love of the beloved Ahid,
Delicate and veiled.

5. He visited me with his beauty,
The son of Jacob the prophet.

6. His charm on his cheek
Like a snake or scorpion.

7. His beauty brought me blessing,
A gazelle quick to anger.

8. I clung to him but I have for his love
No escape or refuge.

9. Reproach me for his love,
You did not hit, you did not hit,

10. You blame me wrongly
When I see his love enchants me.

11. When the moon saw him
It hid itself in the clouds.

12. Oh woe to me, what is with him
Tormenting me with his aloofness?

13. No harm if he would grant me
A kiss from those lips.

14. O Lord of a night he visited me
In the heedlessness of the watcher,

15. So I left him as a full moon appeared
On a rod of gold,

16. Or the rising of the Shaykh Al-Imam
Of lineage and merit,

17. The best of all humanity
Arab or non-Arab,

18. The preserver, the scholar, the Imam
Of the Shafi'i doctrine,

19. He is the generous son of the generous
The most noble son of the most noble,

20. Whose beauty rivals Joseph’s
And whose speech rivals Ya’rub’s.

21. His munificence always overflowing
Like the pouring of the clouds,

22. And whose ambition soared
Above pleasure and fortune,

23. And whose words shine
Like a star.

24. The least of his servants
Serves him like a fox.

25. And if the Imam of Yathrib
And Al-Shafi’i the approved, the preferred

26. Gaze on him, they would be pleased.
O my pillar, O my treasure,

27. O my paradise in tribulation,
Congratulations on the month

28. That contains the prescribed fast,
Live long in the bounty

29. Of fleeting epochs.
No brilliant lightning flashed

30. In a pleasant, easy life.
