شكوى الهدى وتعلق الإسلام
The guidance’s complaint and clinging to Islam
لا تسمعوا في قولا من أخي إحنة
Do not listen to a word from my brother enmity
محوت المداد كمحو المداد
The ink erased as the ink itself erased
مكانك في الحشا مني مكين
Your place in my heart is secure
من قوم المرء بالمكروه تثقيفا
He who accustoms people to harm, though intending good
إذا ابطات عنا من المحسن الحسنى
If benevolence turns away from us
شممت نسيما من وصالك لوهبا
I smelled a breeze of your affection, giving life
من عاش حدث عن أيامه العجبا
He who lived, told of his wondrous days,
من عوض الصبر عما فاته ربحا
He who is rewarded with patience for what he missed
محب يمنى نفسه ويسوف
A lover who wishes for his soul and procrastinates
يزورك العيد والأشواق تحمله
The feast visits you, and yearnings carry it
من عونه ربه في أمره غلبا
Whoever has God's help in his affairs prevails
عاملت ربك وانتدبت خصالا
You have served your Lord and chosen qualities
لا تأخذنك رأفة أو رحمة
Have no mercy or compassion
تعاليت يا من لا نحيط به علما
Come to me, O You whom we cannot encompass in knowledge
لكن ذلك مجهودي أتيت به
Roses are red, violets are blue
برغم سنة خير العجم والعرب
Despite the best year of non-Arabs and Arabs
المال عون على التقوى وربما
Wealth assists in pious deeds, and yet
الفرق بين الكفر والإيمان
The Difference Between Disbelief and Faith
الفسح يطلب منكم الكرماني
Al-Fasih asks of you, O Karmānī
يشاركك المغتاب في حسناته
He who backbites you shares in your good deeds
زيادة القول تحكي النقص في العمل
More talk reveals the lack of action
كلات ودين الله أفضل ما تكلا
Every word that calls to God's religion is best spoken
وقفت على بيتين من أثقل الشعر
I stood upon two verses of the heaviest poetry
قال يحيى لما هجونا اباه
Yahya said, when we satirized his father
فرائد زانها حسن النظام
Exquisite elegance adorns its attributes
أحاجيك في شيء إذا ما سرقته
I ask you about something, if I were to steal it
علي لها أن لا انام ولا أسلو
I must not sleep or rest
في ذمة الله محروسا مدى الأبد
Under God's protection, safe for eternity
خذوا لي من سعدى أمانا من الهجر
Ask Saadi for my safety from parting,
هو الدهر كرت في المعالي كتائبه
Time revolved its battalions in glory,
يا بحر قلدت أخاك البحرا
O sea, you have imitated your brother sea
سهام مقاها فاحذروها صوائب
Her arrows are aimed, so beware their accuracy,
لم أستطع أنهى اللتي انهلت
I could not end the one who drew
قليل لها هجر الجنوب المضاجعا
Little does she care that my heart is broken
ما الفخر في الطعن بالعسالة الذبل
What pride is there in blaming the withered honeybee
ولعت به كبدر التم يبدو
I fell for him like a full moon appears
في كل يوم عارض لك يمطر
Every day an enemy rains misfortune on you
كل يحب ولا تصح مودة
Every love is unsound unless purified by tribulation.
همم أتت بخوارق العادات
Ambitions brought about miracles of norms
تصرف في عبيدك كيف شئتا
Do as you wish with your slaves,
أما الوشاة به فقد ظلموه
The slanderers have wronged him
حاشاكم أن تقطعوا صلة الندى
Far be it from you to sever the ties of kinship
اقرت رؤسا في الطلا هذه الرسل
I read the letters brought by these messengers,
قدمت قدوم اليسر في أثر العسر
You came with ease after hardship
متى ياتي بقربكم البشير
When will the harbinger come near you
بكيت لأخفى بالدموع السوافح
I wept to hide with overflowing tears
قدمت قدوما كان أشهى إلى الناس
You came in a way that was more desirable to people
أتخشى بأن يغشى صوارمه الظما
Do you fear that the swords of oppression will overwhelm the dark?
عليك برأي السيف فهو سديد
The sword's judgment is most sagacious
أتسأل عن دم لك فيه حلا
You ask about blood that pleases you
عيد حظى بك والأعياد تقتتل
The feast was blessed by you, and feasts vie
كانت أحادا عند غيرك لا ثنا
She was unique to others, not two
هموا بحرب ومناهم به الحلم
They aspired for war, and I dreamt of peace for them,
سود العيون أم المواضي البيض
The blackness of the eyes or the whiteness of the meadows
هلالك شبهناه وهو ابن ليلة
Your crescent we likened, though a new moon night's son
لقد حكمت بأمر فيه بعد
You have ruled with wisdom beyond measure
تألق نور العدل وانطفأ الظلم
The light of justice has shone and oppression has been extinguished
آيات سعد توجب الإيمانا
The verses of Saad compel belief
ولما أراد الله أن الهدى يحيى
When God willed that guidance be revived
الحمد للّه رب العالمين على
Praise be to God, Lord of the Worlds
لو كنت تعلم ما بأهل زبيد
If you knew the people of Zabid
ارضيت ربك بالعدل الذي انتشرا
You have pleased your Lord with the justice that spread
هذا التأني وهذا الحلم قد فعلا
This patience and this dream have acted
لله في كل ما يجري به القدر
God has decreed all that comes to pass
رفعت إلى خير الملوك شكيتي
I have raised my complaint to the best of kings,
غبطت جوارحنا عليك الأعينا
Our eyes were envious of you
خطرت بقد أهيف مياس
With a supple, slender figure she sways
أيامنا بك كلها أعياد
Our days with you are all celebrations
رمتني بسهم خلتني منه ناجيا
She shot me with an arrow, leaving me saved from it
هذه دار أمير المؤمنينا
This is the house of the Commander of the Faithful
هنيته عيدا فصل وانحر
I congratulated him on Eid, so slaughter and sacrifice
قالت سليمى ابشر فموعدنا الغد
Sulaima said, rejoice, for tomorrow is our appointment
أتيت مسلما ومن الرجاله
I came as a Muslim and a man of principle
أتاكم من يسترد الغصبا
He who retrieves the plunder has come to you,
قلب على جمر الغضا يتقلب
A heart writhing on the embers of grief,
خذا بي نحو الصوت لا تتبعا الصدى
Take me to the voice, do not follow the echo
هي الدر إلا انها لم تثقبا
It is a pearl, though it has no hole bored through,
ألا قللا ما بي تقر عيونها
Alas! How little sleep comforts her eyes
من يقبل الصب من عاذله
He who endures love from one who reproaches him
بي من فتور المقلة الكحلاء
In me from the languor of kohl-dark eyes
أترى النسيم إذا سرى من نجده
Does the breeze, when it blows from Najd
ردي جفونك عن حشاي قليلا
Turn your eyelids from my passionate love for a little while,
إِذا تطاولت الأعناق للرتب
When necks are stretched for high positions,
بعثت ببرد بما زادكم نوى
I sent with cold what augmented your intent
حكم مضى وقضاء لا نغالبه
A decree has passed, a judgement we cannot overcome
تولت فما من مطمع في لقائها
She passed away, so there is no longer hope of meeting her,
أنحن بهذا الموت أم غيرنا يعنا
Is it we who die, or is it others?
دعوتك هاديا لك لو أطيق
I called you gently, if I could endure
ان يكن الحر الأبى
If he be the free man
قد يمنع المضطر من ميتة
The desperate may be forbidden carrion
منزلتي أحمد عظمها
My school, how great is its stature
لك الحمد كلا يجبر الشعب كسره
Praise be to you who raises every broken people,
قطع الزمان يمينه بيمينه
The days have severed their oath with their oaths,
من زاحم الأسد في غاباتها وقعا
He who contends with lions in their dens, takes a risk
قد جاء نصر الله والفتح
Victory from God has come
هذي خطوطك في كفي مشاهدة
These are your lines in my palm, observed
فسلم الأمر واعط الصبر واجبه
Submit to destiny, accept what is ordained,
يا من لدمع مارقي وصبيبه
O you whose tears flowed and sobbed
مقامي تحت ظل الذل عار
My abode is under the shade of humiliation and shame,
أرخا أثيث الدجى الجاني على الفلق
I unfurled the furniture of darkness upon dawn
فقدت عليا حيث كنت اوده
I lost Ali where I used to love him
خذ النفس بالتسلم لله في الأمر
Submit yourself to Allah's will in this matter
لم أكثر الواشي المقال وزورا
I did not excessively slander and lie,
تقضت ليال ضاعفت لكم الأجرا
You spent nights multiplying rewards
حلفت يقظان مروج العنان
I swore allegiance, vigilant are the meadows of glory
يساري في يمينك لا تزال
Your left hand is still in my right,
عجل فقد نوديت يا عجلان
Hasten, for you have been called, O one who hastens
تلاطم بحر جيشه وماجا
The sea surged and its army roared
ما للعلى عتب على الأيام
What fault lies with the high one towards days gone by?
جرحي لكم مستعذب في الحشا
My wound is sweetened in your desert home
أحسنت في تدبير أمرك يا حسن
You have done well in managing your affairs, O Hasan,
خذوا لي من الألحاظ أمنا على عقلي
Take from the glances a glance that will protect my mind
لك خارقات عوائد لن تعرفا
You have extraordinary qualities that will never be known
انجزت في الأعداء ميعاد المنى
I have fulfilled the promised fate for the enemies,
هز الغرام معاقد التيجان
Love shook the crowns of kings
شهدت لقد أعليت كعب المكارم
You bore witness that I have elevated the glory of nobility
هنا الجود أضحى ثاويا وهنا المجد
If only you knew what this grave contains
أتاني منك بالفرج الجواب
I received your letter giving respite
في الله سبحانه عمن مضى خلف
In God the Glorious, for those who passed before
غايات جودك لا تبطي عن الامل
Your generosity's goals do not conceal hope
إِذا سفك الدماء لديك حلا
If blood is shed, you have a solution
إِذا حسدا مالت عن الصاحب الصحب
When my friends turn envious and abandon me,
نفس ابن آدم لو تسامت للسما
The soul of the son of Adam, if it aspires to the sky
أهلا بطرس من إمام مدته
Welcome, Peter, from his imam whose term
أيملك طرفي دمع عينيه قانيا
Does the one who sheds my tears have any tears in his eyes
بليت بكل أمعة جهول
I have become confused by every ignorance
البحر أنت وهذا العالم السمك
You are the sea, and this world is the fish
ما جود راحتيك والأنواء
Neither your generosity nor the clouds' rain
رمتني فلا شلت يداها بأسهم
She shot me with arrows, so I did not grasp her hands
قصدتك أيها الملك المرجا
I sought you, O praised King,
نصيبي منك يوم البعد بعد
My share of you is remoteness after remoteness
على الطالع الميمون أسست يا قصر
On auspicious stars was your palace founded,
الدين دين ربنا والملك
The religion is the religion of our Lord and the kingdom
أزلت عن الإسلام ما أوجب الشكوى
I have removed from Islam what warranted complaint,
كذا فليعاني الملك من أعطي الملكا
Thus may the king suffer, he who gives away kingdoms
ما فته حظه من أجل الطلبا
He did not attain what he sought from learning,
ولما رأيت الدهر يقتل أهله
When I saw time slaying its people
والله ما صدق الواشي الذي نقلا
By God, the slanderer who conveyed that tale was untrue
إذا جادت الروض الحديث غمائمه
When the blossoms of the garden spread their clouds,
ما لي ارى الغاب عن وجه الهزبر خلا
Why do I see the forest turn away from the face of spring?
منكر رقص عاقد الطيلسان
The critic of the dance of the one wearing a turban,
أاتى الإسلام من حيث أمن
Islam came from where it was safe
من سلم الحق إلى أربابه
Those who surrender the truth to its masters
إني أعيذ علاك يا برقوق
O Barquq, I seek refuge in you
إلى كم تمادى في غرور وغفلة
To how much did you persist in arrogance and heedlessness
يا راكبا في طلاب العيشة الهلكه
O rider seeking perilous livelihood
يا بحر علم يزخر
O sea of endless knowledge
قل لمن الغز السؤال
Ask whose is the secret name
اضرب بسيف العزم أَعناق الكرى
Strike with the sword of determination the necks of troubles
هو البدر في أفلاكه يتنقل
He is the full moon in its orbit moving about
الملك الناصر سلطاننا
Our Sultan al-Nasir is our lofty ruler
رقص جياد الظبا في حلبة اللعب
The stallions of antelopes dance in the arena of play
نهنيك عيدا أنت لا شك عيده
We congratulate you on this day, it is without doubt your feast
ما عن سرب الضبيات العفر
Not about flocks of gazelles grazing
خيول الناس تسبق كل خيل
The horses of people outrun every horse
حمدت اخلاف رجا جلبتها
I praised the successor, hoping it would bring him,
قناة العز في تلك الرماح
The channel of glory is in those spears
على الطالع الميمون قد أسس القصر
Upon the auspicious rising star the palace is built,
قد صرت منا واحدا يا جعفر
You have become one of us, O Ja'far
من قلدت عينه في أمره الاذنا
He whose eyes in his affair deafened his ears
قليل لكم نفسي وإن كثرت عندي
However much I have, my soul is little for you,
هو القضا فخذ المبسوط مختصرا
It is fate, so accept the outstretched decree briefly
لقد أسرفت في بخس حظي وواجبي
I have been excessive in underestimating my share and duty
أتتنا ما جردت صارمك البشرى
The tidings of your unsheathed sword have reached us
خذوا لي من سمر القدود أمانا
Take for me from the night’s darkness some safety,
زبيد إذا ما شئت سكنى ببلدة
Zabeed, if I wanted a residence in a city
أيضيع مثلي عند اسماعيلا
My adversity is like Ismail’s
ما في شجاعة ذى السخا من شك
There is no courage in the stingy despite their doubts,
دمعي على الخد مثل الدر ينتثر
My tears on my cheek are like pearls scattering
عدوك مما عنك يسمع يا يحيى
Your enemies will hear of what comes from you, O Yahya,
كذا فليعانا ما أهم إذا اعتلا
Thus let him suffer, though important he be, when flawed,
جمع الملا يحيى على القرآن
Sheikh Yahya gathered to recite the Quran
اجعل زكاة سديرك المعمور
Make the charity of your prosperous home flourish
أهلا بما أنسى الذنوب المذنب
Welcome what makes one forget sins, O sinner,
ما شئت قله فلحمي دون خالقه
Say what you will of my flesh apart from its Creator,
يا من يصيد إذا غزا أسد الشرى
O you who hunts when the lion of evil attacks
لي شوق إلى الملاح شديد
I have intense longing for the sailor
يا من هو الملجأ والمعقل
O you who are the refuge and shelter
كم ذا أؤنبه وفي تأنبيه
How much I reproach him, yet in reproaching
العلم بالإجماع معدنه ذهب
Knowledge through consensus is a mine of gold
رضيتك مولاتي وارضيتني عبدا
You have pleased me, my Lord, and I am pleased to be Your servant,
ما خيب الله فيه للورى أملا
He did not disappoint the hopes of mankind
يا غنيا بفخر ملك الأنام
O you who take pride in being king of all people
يا أيها الملك الميمون طائره
O auspicious king, bird of good omen,
وفقت زادك رب العرش توفيقا
May the Lord of the Throne grant you success
قضى الله فينا وهو حكم بحكمه
God has decreed among us with His judgement
المشتري الحمد بالإفعال يصلحها
The buyer, praiseworthy through deeds, makes amends for them,
بجود يديك أورقت الغصون
With your generosity, branches have flourished,
هز السرور معاقد التيجان
Joy shook the crowns of laurel
معظم له يدا وكم وكم
Most have a hand and how many
اشارت من العنباء نحوى بحبة
She signaled to me from near the grapevines
شلت يمين حوادث الأيام
The days have paralyzed my right hand,
كانت زبيد وأنتم بازائها
Zabid was there while you stood facing it
على من بالهدى يا ابن الإمامه
O you who are guided by the Imamate, how can you
أزلت بالصمصام شوك القنا
I cleared the thorns from the date palms
قوامك مثل معتدل القناة
Your stature is like a balanced canal
أتاها رسولي فاسمعوا ما جرا له
My messenger came to her, so listen to what happened to him
يا ليل جبلة هل لفجرك مطلع
O night of Jabalah, does your dawn have a rising?
من فتى أعطاه موليه المنى
He who was granted his wish by his Lord
من قلد العلما واقدم أعذرا
Whoever imitates knowledge and proceeds rashly
يوم سرور وشفاء صدر
A day of joy and healing of the chest
معط أخا كرم مرض أخا ندم
Give a generous brother medicine for illness, a brother for regret
عطف الحبيب وشمت بارقة الرضا
The beloved's kindness and the gleam of his pleasure
قل لمن الغز السؤال وأرجى
Say to the one who asks the riddle and I hope
لك في الملوك خوارق العادات
You have extraordinary feats among kings,
حصنت ذا الوجه الأغر
I have protected this radiant face
يا أيها الملك الذي لا يغلب
O king who cannot be defeated
أراني الله رأسك يا صلاح
May Allah show me your head, O Salah
أسرفت في بخسك حظ صاحب
You were excessive in depriving your friend of his share
أعلي ترجف بالوعيد وتوجف
You threaten me and bark furiously,
يزداد هجرا كل ما كلما
My estrangement grows each time we speak
كفاك سرورا بالحسين قدومه
Your joy with Hussein's arrival suffices,
إذا اومض البرق من أرضها
When lightning flashes from her land
سرور عم حتى ما عرفنا
Joy has spread far and wide
خذوا حظكم منها إلى مطلع الفجر
Take your share of it till the break of dawn
ألقى على كرسيه أجسادا
He threw bodies upon his throne
دعوت بأن لا يجمع الله بينكم
I prayed that Allah would not bring you together,
لا تيأسن فالرجا كم فرجا
Do not despair, for hope has often relieved,
بشراك بشراك هبت نسمة الفلق
The breeze of dawn blew upon you, o king
في لحظ عينيه سكر من رحيق فمه
In a glance of his eyes, drunk from the nectar of his mouth
لصومك شهر الصوم يكسى من الفجر
Your fasting in the month of Ramadan is clothed
أعندك علم أم أقول فأطرب
Do you have knowledge or shall I speak and enchant
ما صالحت داعي الهوى مقلتي
My eyes did not heed the summons of passion
وما حجر إسماعيل لولا محمد
Were it not for Muhammad, the stone of Ishmael
أبى الله أن يشقى بنصحك ناصح
God does not will that an advisor suffer for giving counsel
إليك وإلا ضيع الحزم أَهله
To you, lest resolution's people lose it,
دعوني فما مما يكلفني بد
Let me be, for nothing of what burdens me will go,
لمثل رؤيتك الأبصار تدخر
For the sights to see you, they save their gazes
أعد نظرا في قصة ليس تحجب
Reconsider the story that does not veil
يا من يثير بأريحية جوده
O You who gently stirs with Your generosity
انهض فطائر سعدك الميمون
Rise, O auspicious one, in the protection of the Merciful wherever he may be
يا نائب الله في الدنيا ومن فيها
O deputy of God in this world and those in it
كل الملوك وجملة الخلفاء
All the kings and the caliphs combined
أتم سرور يرى الوالد الابنا
The father sees his son's perfection
أتاني وصالي مشيب يروم
My union came to me graying, intending,
شمل بفضل رسول الله ينتظم
ألا يا رسول الله غارة ثائر
عجبت لتلميذ رضى شر سنة
سيعيصني في الحب من ولهي به
سم سمة تحمد آثارها
إليك فقد حملت قلبي من الهوي
رثت لنحولي في هواها وذلتي
لنا بهواه حرمة وذمام
غدرت فيا باني الغزال الغادر
أقمن على قلبي رقيبا من الحب
خرقت عوائدها لك الأقدار
سماط ما أراه أم مناخ
خذ الملك يا يحيى إليك بقوة
قد أوعدتني بالزيارة في الكرى
سطوت بسلطان الجمال على الصب
لو يستطيع تخطي الأيام
إذا لم يكن للصب من هجركم بد
أعن ملل خيالك لا يطيف
وما موت إسماعيل موت مجاور
رتب لهم حطت فما رفعت
ما بين كل وقفة ووقفة
ليتهم كانوا يهودا
خاطر بنفسك في رضى الرحمن
بنفسك ما اعتبرت وكنت أحرى
عانى وما حابى العدو فاعذرا
هو الله من حبلي وريدك أقرب
من كان يكتب ما الأيام تمليه
ظهرت عجائب قدرة الرحمن
لي في الله حسن ظن جميل
تدارك من زمانك ما افدتا
ما خاب من في الله كان رجاه
أحاجيك في شيء يطل ويبكر
أهلا به من بحر علم صدره
إليك ما يقطع للسعله
رجلان لا أحتاج أن أسميهما
من يعط كنز رضاك يغن ويغنم
ملك سما ذو كمال زانه كرم
لنا ما دنا مما نروم وما شطا
ما كنت يا بحر المكارم أحسب
إلى أى باب غير بابك أقرع
من بات مثلي للنجوم نزيلا
تمنيت لو أن طال في وصلكم عمري
يا دهر حسبك لا تغررك عاقبة
في الصلح راسل دهر راح غضبانا
ما زلن في طاعاتك الأقدار
نعم صب دمع الصب يا لائمي لولا
ليوم واحد لك في الصيام
هلموا فقد قامت على ساقها الحرب
إليك فلو أدركت مغنى الهوى مغنا
صدود ولا ذنب وعتب ولا عتبا
التام جرح والاساة غيب
للصبر في مهجتي والهم معترك
الحمد لله حمدا دائما أبدا
يغر بحسن الرأى راج ويخدع
يا من بنعماه لحمي نابت ودمي
أدرى من نام عن الأرق
عيون المها ردى سهامك من نحر
ليوم منك والإقبال يجري
عندي لوالد أحمد ولأحمد
إلى كم عتاب دائم وعتاب
الحمد لله حمدا ليس يحصيه
ما كان حق محبكم أن يهجرا
إن له فرط غرام وأسا
كذا فليكن سعى الملوك إلى المجد
بالسعد دار نجم هذا الدار
يا من رأى مثل ابن تاج الدين
شكرك فرض من فروض العين
شهود الهوى منى علي عذول
عيون مها يجلو ظبا لحظها السحر
أيرجو أن يزور وأن يزارا
هكذا فليكن قرار العيون
على غيرك البهتان والزور ينفق
لقد جاد لي بالمال حتى حسبتني
مقعد صدق لمليك مقتدر
قصدتك يا مولى الملوك لعادة
ما أنت في منزل يخشى به الرجل
الحمد لله أزال الحزنا
بك للأماني موعد لم يخلف
لك كل يوم خارقات تبهر
لا تأخذنك وحشة مما جرى
أطمع في الوصل وما أناله
عيد اعاد الله من بركاته
بقلبي وجد ما عليه مزيد
تولى بعد ما غسل الذنوبا
بنى السيف علياه وشيدها الندى
جرى لك في خرق العوائد والعرف
إذا كان من عاداك يصبح نادما
من سلب الدهر رد أشبابه
هكذا فلتكن إلى الغلمان
وافا على قدر لأمر قد قدر
اسكنوها بسلام آمنينا
كما كان إسماعيل يحيى به يحيا
يا من عطاياه منها النصر والظفر
عذرتك في الحقوقِ فهل لعذري
يا طيب ما يهدى قبيل الفجر
أبشر ببشرى بابها قد فتحا
أعد الذي عاينت من ليلتي فجر
لي منكم يا كهف الملوك والدول
عسى طيف ذات الخال يطرق زائره
قد فضل العقد النظيم دره
عليك فيما قضاه الله بالصبر
طلبوا الذي نالوا فما منعوا
لم قدموا العجم إن كان الحديث كذا
يا رب قد وفقتني للعمل
كم لك يا جار منا من المنن
أكلت اللحم حلا من أيادي
جاءت إلى المملوك من مولى له
سقتك من الغوادي يا زبيد
ما لي وقد شبت في داعي الصبا أرب
أضعت من حقنا يا دهر ما يجب
إلا يا أيها المحبوب لم لا
رضاك عني رضا الباري به قرنا
